Barcelona Pull Out Of 2022 Olympic Bid Barcelona was attempting to be the first city to hold both summer and Winter Olympics, but a local newspaper has reported that the city plans to drop its bid. The on-snow events would have been held in ski resorts in the Spanish Pyrenees, and the rest in the city. The claim is as yet unconfirmed.

Escape To The Backcountry BEN CLATWORTHY

hanks to the popularity of their 6-week, off-piste, career break course, Nonstop (nonstopsnow.com) has launched an additional backcountry focused coaching programme, which enables keen skiers and snowboarders to enjoy a week’s introduction to ski touring or split boarding. Based in Fernie, British Columbia, the course is designed

T

to help people escape the usual hustle and bustle of a week in a busy resort – giving participants the opportunity to leave the chairlifts behind, and venture into the wilderness of the backcountry. The camp is one of the best ways to explore the mountains, and ski deep, untracked powder for a whole week. Rupert Taylor, the company Founder said: "With the advent of wider skis, skiing deep powder has become open to all, and the next step is taking those

skills onto the quiet, untracked slopes of the backcountry. This new camp provides the perfect introduction to seeing the mountains in a brilliant new way." Clients will be provided with new Dynastar touring skis or a Rome split board, as well as the necessary skills required to explore the backcountry. There will be 4 days of expert tuition, 3 of which take place in the backcountry. In addition, Nonstop also provide guests with the opportunity to spend a day cat-

The package includes guiding and instruction, touring equipment hire, lift pass for Fernie Alpine Resort, and an optional day of cat skiing. Off the mountain, Nonstop provides 7 nights’ accommodation, with breakfast, three evening meals, and transfers. Prices start at £1295, and the camp runs from 22 February–1 March 2014.
