Are you ready for some

football? South Florida bars gear up for football season By Starlet Anne Contributing Writer

F

ootball season is here! Stadiums will be packed with fans and so will South Florida bar stools. Local restaurants, bars and nightclubs are gearing up for football! Cheer on your favorite sports team with plenty of beer, wings, drink specials, big screen TVs, and more. Local establishments are pulling out all the stops to entice sports fans to come to their venues. Why spend the big bucks in the nosebleed section when you can get a front row seat in one of many bars in downtown Fort Lauderdale, by the beach, your neighborhood pub or nightclub. If you’re a Green Bay Packers’ fan, Slackers is the place to be. “Slackers is the largest Green Bay Packers bar in Florida. All Packers games are shown with sound and we feature authentic Wisconsin foods, beers and drinks. Also, we play actual game day music just like you hear at Lambeau Field. With 50 HD TVs, we show every single NFL game. Slackers offers $12 6 • ITB • September 2013

Domestic and $15 Premium buckets during all NFL games,” said owner Jon Slack. “At Slackers, we look forward to meeting all the new Packers fans who travel here on vacation that find their way to Slackers to watch a Packers game. Also, beating the Bears is something all Packers fans look forward to each year.” Lucky’s Tavern in downtown Fort Lauderdale will be serving up many drink and shot specials for the big games. They have $10 Domestic Buckets, $4 Fireballs, $5 Jagers and free hot dogs during the games on Sunday and Monday. 55” HDTVs and Direct TV NFL Sunday Ticket for all the games. Lucky’s also now has over 50 craft bottled beers and many more coming before football season begins! “Lucky’s looks forward to football season because that’s when we get to hang out with the many locals who live in the area that walk to downtown for great football and great beer selections, those daytime dwellers who don’t normally come out for the late night’s club scene,” said owner Jon Slack. The Dive Bar is another great locals spot to catch a game and fun. Beyond just NFL Prime Ticket and a bunch of TVs, The Dive Bar has a 100 inch screen for the big games. $12 bucket

specials and a special low price game day menu with pizza, wings, sliders, burgers and all the favorites are also available. “The Dive Bar is the only place you can watch the game during the day and then slide into the best Sunday night Karaoke afterwards,” said owner Gary Marcotteg. Pitchers, wings and ribs are just a few specials on the menu at Cowboys Saloon in Davie during football season. During the games, bring your friends out for $5 pitchers, a $13.95 BBQ baby back ribs dinner, $12.95 boneless wings and pitcher of beer, $12 domestic buckets and $3.50 Heineken and Dos XX pints. Also, every Thursday and Saturday night during college football games, it’s $20 all you can drink premium bar including Jack Daniels, Captain Morgan, Svedka, Bacardi, Jose Cuervo and draft beer from 8 pm to 11 pm. “We just added another 16 50” LED HD TVs. We have over 50 plus TVs in the building and will be showing all the college football games and NFL Thursday night football,” said Mike Walton, Director of Operations at Cowboys Saloon. So this football season is sure to be one not to forget! www.InTheBizMagazine.com

COVER MODEL

Francesca Where do you work? I work at the fabulous Cowboys Saloon in Davie

Nia Cohen

Where are you from originally? I’m originally from New Jersey before I moved to the beautiful Sunshine State!

How long have you been InTheBiz®? In October it will be a full three years I have been working in the hospitality industry. What do you like best about bartending? The best part of bartending is meeting all of the great people that come to my bar. I love all of the interesting people I meet on a regular basis. We certainly get a lot of different personalities at Cowboys.

Why did you choose to become a bartender? I started serving three years ago and I eventually worked my way up to bartending. because it was something I always wanted to do and I fell in love with it! What is the most ordered drink? Fireball Whiskey has been flying off the shelves!! Everyone seems to be ordering that these days!! Yummy!!! What is your favorite drink to make? I enjoy making a Chocolate Covered Pretzel Shot! You make it by running a lemon wedge around the edge of a shot glass and dipping the rim in salt. Then pour vodka and Frangelico over ice into a shaker, shake until chilled, strain into shot glass and serve. It’s so delicious it really does taste like a Chocolate Covered Pretzel!!! What is the worst pick up line you ever heard? The worst pick up line I ever heard was “I’m new in town, could I have directions to your house?” I simply replied I’m terrible with directions! What can you share with new bartenders to make the most in tips? As a new bartender the most important thing is to just be super friendly and have fun with it! You’re going to hear some ridiculous things from people but if you have a good attitude and smile you’ll enjoy your job 100%. If you enjoy what you are doing, it shows and people will tip you more. People love to tip someone who truly acts like they love what they are doing. What would you do to improve your work environment? There is nothing I would change about my work environment! I love everyone I work with and I love the people who in come! Cowboys Saloon is like a second family to me! What would you like to see InTheBiz® Magazine implement? Nothing! I think this magazine is awesome how it is!

Becca Where do you work? My name is Becca Hood

Hood

Where do you work? I work at Cowboys Saloon in Davie Where are you originally from? I am Originally from London, Ontario Canada. I moved here when I was really young. I am very glad to be in the sun and not the snow. How long have you been InTheBiz®? I have been InTheBiz® for seven years, and bartending for five of them. What do you like most about bartending? My favorite thing about bartending is the energy. You will never have a boring night as a bartender. Why did you decide to be a bartender? A good friend of mine worked at a bar, she called me and asked if I could come in and help out for a night. She handed me a book of drinks and threw me to the wolves. There was a lot of pressure, but I figured out that people don’t mind if you mess up their drink as long as you do it with a smile. What is the most ordered drink? The most ordered drink would probably be a Mojito, Long Island Iced Tea or a specialty drink with 25 ingredients, or Bud Light. What is your favorite drink to make? If I had to choose a favorite drink to make I guess it would be a cocktail that I make up on the spot, I’m always curious of the reaction I will get from giving someone something new. What is the best pick-up line you have heard? Him: Hey are you going to cover my tab tonight in hopes I’ll take you out and make it up to you?” Me: “nice try buddy but I have a boyfriend” Him:”Oh yea I have a goldfish”....... Me: “um ok, so what does that mean” Him:” Oh I’m sorry I thought we were talking about things that don’t matter. I’ll pick you up tomorrow here’s my card” What advice would you give new bartenders? If I had to give new bartenders advice I would tell them not to focus on making tips but on selling product. It makes you a more valuable employee which results in you getting better shifts, which results in you making more money. What would you do to improve your work environment? The only thing I would do to improve my work environment would be to ban smoking in bars. It ruins my hair, clothes, and burns my eyes. What would you like to see implemented in InTheBiz®? I would like to see the arts and entertainment section include local bands and entertainment as well as the mainstream events.

lthough summer is officially over, it always feels like you’re on vacation in South Florida. The month of September is no different! South Florida bars, night clubs, concert venues and restaurants will still be buzzing with special events, drink specials, parties and plenty of reasons to have a night out on the town. So get out of your house and enjoy all that your communities and nightlife have to offer including music, art and entertainment galore. Experience the arts at the Riverwalk Sunday Arts. The event is held every Sunday from 11 am to 2 pm along the New River and at Esplanade Park in Fort Lauderdale. Vendors will demonstrate their crafts and products including performances, dance, drawing, photography, sculpting and others. Come and support your local arts and entertainment and enjoy a beautiful day on the New River. For more information, call 954-468-1541. The National Redbull Flugtag is coming to Miami on Saturday, September 21st at Noon at Bayfront Park, 301 Biscayne Blvd Miami. It’s East Coast versus West Coast rap. Will Downtown Miami best the magic of Hollywood? On September 21, all arguments will be settled on the flight deck! Red Bull Flugtag will land

in Bayfront Park, situated on the blue waters of Biscayne Bay. Come watch fearless pilots launch their team-powered flying machines off a 30-foot ramp into the wavy waters below. Hangars open at noon, and the first flight takes off at 2 pm. Never forget! The City of Fort Lauderdale will also pay tribute to September 11th with a 5K Run and Walk. The Tunnel to Towers 5K Run and Walk will be held on Saturday, September 7th at 7:30 am at Huizenga Park in Fort Lauderdale. The run will honor and celebrate the first responders (fire, police, EMT’s, paramedics) and military service heroes who serve, sacrifice and protect every day. Proceeds benefit the most catastrophically injured service heroes including quadruple and triple amputee heroes who have made extraordinary sacrifices to defend our freedom. You can register at http://www.T2Trun.org/FtLauderdale. Your local bars and nightclubs have even added specialty themed nights and entertainers during the upcoming months. Lulu’s Bait Shack now has Country Western Night, Boot Scoot and Boogie, every Thursday night with some croonin’ country tunes and beers. The Dive Bar in Fort Lauderdale has a long lineup of musicians and karaoke nights. Be sure to check out Blues guitarist Rockin’ Jake on September 6th. Cowboys Saloon in Davie also offers different themed nights and parties with cash and prizes. Check out their website and Facebook page for upcoming events! Plus, almost every local venue is offering an ITB night for their hospitality employees. On any given night, if you work in the industry you could get a great deal on food and cocktails. Continue to rock out this month with a full lineup of concerts! Your musical calendar will be jammed packed with artists to hear. Hard Rock Live starts their concerts with Loretta Lynn on September 15th at 7 pm, followed by Lionel Richie on September 18th at 8 pm, and conclude the month with Brian Wilson & Jeff Beck with Al Jardine & David Marks on September 27th. The BB&T Center has a diverse mix of singers this month with Depeche Mode on September 15th at 7:30 pm and the www.InTheBizMagazine.com

ertainment Stone Temple Pilots with Chester Bennington on September 17th at 7:30 pm. Country lovers will be singing along to their favorite singers at Cruzan Amphitheatre in West Palm Beach. On September 7 at 7 pm, Jason Aldean and Thomas Rhett will be performing. John Mayer and Phillip Phillips will be belting out popular melodies on September 8th at 7:30 pm. Next up is the Honda Civic Tour with Maroon 5, Kelly Clarkson and PJ Morton on September 14 at 7 pm. Country stars Miranda Lambert and Dierks Bentley- Locked and Reloaded Tour will round out the musical talents. “We Are Young”, “Some Nights” and “Carry On” will be playing at Mizner Park Amphitheatre in Boca Raton when Fun with Special guests Tegan and Sara perform on September 18th at 8 pm. Movie buffs are also in for a treat with a mix of action, comedy and romance films. ‘Riddick’ centers on Diesel who reprises his role as the antihero Riddick, a dangerous, escaped convict wanted by every bounty

hunter in the known galaxy. The infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless. Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any

human he’s encountered. The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend to the planet in search of their bounty. Favorite actors such as Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer lead the cast of the film, The Family. In this darkly comedic action film from Luc Besson (Taken, Transporter), Malavita is the story of the Manzonis, a notorious mafia family who gets relocated to Normandy, France under the witness protection program. While they do their best to fit in, old habits die hard and they soon find themselves handling things the “family” way. If you like chills and screams, see Insidious: Chapter 2. The famed horror team of director James Wan and writer Leigh Whannell reunite with the original cast of Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Lin Shaye, Barbara Hershey and Ty Simpkins, a terrifying sequel to the acclaimed horror film, which follows the haunted Lambert family as they seek to uncover the mysterious childhood secret that has left them dangerously connected to the spirit world. Enjoy a month of entertainment and fun!

ith smokin’ hot wings, Chicago sports, unbeatable happy hour prices, and InTheBiz® specials, Hot Leggzz in Lighthouse Point is sure to be the new hot spot. Already having a busy location on Commercial Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale, Hot Leggzz owners Ky Novak and Juliana Sodre wanted to open another location with the same delicious food, friendly service, great drinks with a bigger seating area at 3128 N. Federal Highway, Lighthouse Point. “We want to open Hot Leggzz across the nation. When we saw the Lighthouse Point location it just fit well with our brand. It’s the same atmosphere, same menu, same drinks, same specials, and a lot of the same staff; the only difference here is that it is two times bigger than our Fort Lauderdale location,” said Rachel Trevino, Manager at Hot Leggzz. A Key West style atmosphere and custom-

Chef of the Month Omar Pesce

By Starlet Anne Contributing Writer

Shrimp Cocktail

I

t isn’t only the friendly staff and hot bartenders that keep customers coming back to Goldfinger. Many frequent the establishment for their prime rib or Angus beef sliders, which are served daily for lunch or dinner. Head Chef Omar Pesce has quite a following since he began cooking up mouth watering dishes at Goldfinger about a year ago. He has worked in the hospitality industry for over 20 years, managing various nightclubs at Gulf Stream Park, Hard Rock, and working as the General Manager of The Whiskey Blue Bars in New York. But it was his love of food and creating unique meals that is his passion. “I enjoy having the chance to express myself in my cooking. I’m my own boss which gives me the freedom to create,” said Omar, adding, “When I first started, what inspired

me was the excitement of being able to watch people’s faces as they tried my creations; and being able to implement my Argentinian and Italian roots.” At Goldfinger, Chef Omar cooks up a mix of entrees and specialties for lunch and dinner. You can order from one of their many lunch specials offered from noon til 4 pm and

ranging from Angus beef sliders to their cage free chicken breast and much more. Start your meal off with a Jumbo Shrimp cocktail. Dinners are a treat with delicious from a tender, juicy NY Strip or Prime Rib to a wonderful Chicken Caesar wrap. And don’t forget their amazing desserts and seafood “We have a variety of menu items here at Goldfinger, from fresh made pasta and sauces to the best cuts of meat your taste buds could imagine. The ingredients are always fresh,” said Chef Omar- and you can’t beat the Chef’s creative touch! Chef Omar truly enjoys what he does every day. “I love watching people’s faces light up and smile as they try my food. It truly makes me happy to see their reactions,” he said. Stop in and try one of Omar’s creations! Goldfinger is located at 3801 N. University Drive, Sunrise. For more information, call 954748-6378.

he Coral Springs Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee presents the 8th Annual “Golfing for the King” Golf Classic, to be held on Monday, October 28th at The Heron Bay Golf Club, located at 11801 Heron Bay Boulevard. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and Shotgun begins at 8:30 a.m. Registration fee is $100 per golfer and includes breakfast, time on the Range, beverages on the course and an Awards Luncheon. Proceeds from this event directly benefit the Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Fund for Coral Springs high school students who demonstrate a financial need. This scholar38 • ITB • September 2013

ship is offered regardless of ethnicity. In past years, through the Committee’s efforts, more than 160 high school seniors have received scholarships in varying amounts based primarily on financial need. The students will apply the scholarship money towards their tuition costs at a university or other educational institution of their choice. The scholarship is available to high school seniors who live in Coral Springs and attend one of the five local high schools: J.P. Taravella, Stoneman Douglas, Coral Springs Charter, Coral Glades and Coral Springs High School. The purpose of the scholarship program is “to provide funds to needy, local students

who, through their words and actions, embody the spirit of Dr. King’s teachings.” Although preference is given to students with financial need, attention is also given to the quality of community service performed by the applicants. Since the scholarship program is entirely dependent upon the generous contributions of individuals and corporations, your donation to this cause is very important. Gifts for the Silent Auction held at the Golf Tournament are also being accepted at this time. All donations are tax-deductible. ative Floridian artist Kenin “Poe” Bailey Jr. is no stranger to the entertainment industry. Poe made his acting debut in Rick Ross’ premier chart topping music video for “Hustlin’”. He has consistently had opportunities in the entertainment industry - from sitting in on studio sessions, to being on set for multi-million dollar video shoots. Born and raised in Miami, Poe got involved in music when he was just 12 years old. “Making music is my life. It soothes me when I’m making new music.” Poe has grown up under E-Class, entrepreneur and entertainment mogul - founder and CEO of Poe Boy Music Group, Poe has worked extensively with Poe Boy Music Group, and is now ready to kick start his own label, Poe Nation. Poe’s musical influences include Birdman and Jay-Z, who have pursued other entrepreneurial ventures in addition to music. He feels that music is one of the strongest ways to connect with people. Poe’s songs are about his life experiences, as well as his take on issues with our society. 40 • ITB • September 2013

Miami Dolphins Finish Preseason Strong, Gear Up for Anticipated Season

By Allen Levin Sports Editor

T

he Miami Dolphins finished off their five-game preseason slate with a nice win over the New Orleans Saints, giving them a 2-3 record. While the Dolphins clearly have some holes they need to shore up, they showed a lot of promise in the preseason.

First of all, sophomore quarterback Ryan Tannehill had an encouraging few games. The signal caller threw for 377 yards, three touchdowns and zero interceptions. The defense looked dominant, limiting opponents to just 14 points per game in the preseason. On top of that, the receiving unit looked strong; the running game showed signs and the special teams unit was spot on. When it comes to the Dolphins, it boils down to one question: How far can Ryan Tannehill take this offense? Can Tannehill prove to be a franchise quarterback? How will this offense gel and improve? The defense will be the Dolphins bread and butter this year. They arguably have one of the best run defenses in the NFL and their secondary is strong. It’s the offense that has some holes. TE Dustin Keller was supposed to be a huge

weapon for the Dolphins this season, but went down with a season-ending ACL injury. Miami also has some questions on offensive line and whether Lamar Miller or Daniel Thomas can take the ground game to the next level. Still, the talent is clearly there for the Dolphins. They have all the pieces to give the New England Patriots a run for their money this season. At the very minimum, Miami has the talent to produce a winning season. Most people would consider the season a disappointment if they didn’t go at least 9-7. However, the excitement from the fans and the city of Miami is much higher than that. This is arguably the most anticipated season in Dolphins history, and many fans are expecting the playoffs this year. With the weapons and personnel that the Dolphins have, there is no reason they can’t exceed expectations this year.

Miami Heat Signing of Greg Oden Offers Promise

A

fter winning their second consecutive championship, the Miami Heat chose to stand pat this offseason. Well that was until long-flirted with free agent Greg Oden finally decided to make his NBA comeback official. For months, the Heat had been flirting with the idea to sign Oden, who hasn’t played in a game in over 3 years due to multiple knee surgeries, to help with their size woes. Oden worked out multiple times with Miami and a few other teams over the last year, but it wasn’t clear if he was going to be healthy enough to actually make a comeback. Finally, Oden worked out for the Heat late in the season and was convincing enough to receive interest from the New Orleans Pelicans, Atlanta Hawks, Dallas Mavericks, Sacramento Kings, San Antonio Spurs and Heat. After much mulling and a long-awaited decision, Oden opted to sign with the Heat on a onewww.InTheBizMagazine.com www.InTheBizMagazine.com

year deal for the veteran’s minimum. Oden brings a wealth of potential to Miami. The 7-footer is a former No. 1 overall pick who was supposed to be the next great center before his career was derailed by multiple knee injuries. In the short amount of time Oden has played, a total of 82 games, the Ohio Stateproduct averaged 9.4 points, 7.3 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game. While that may be too much to ask of Oden in Miami, he won’t be expected to do that. Despite the Heat’s back-to-back titles, the Heat have been hurt by their lack of size, as was evident in their playoff series against the Pacers and Spurs, where they got beat up in the paint. Oden will be relied on to guard some of those big centers in the East, such as Roy Hibbert and Joakim Noah. In addition, if he can grab some rebounds, play good defense and just be a big body, he will be successful with the Heat.

There’s no telling if Oden’s body will hold up, but if it does, he brings a lot of intrigue and muchneed size to a Miami Heat team that is going for a three-peat.
