Office of Workforce Development

The Office of Workforce Development continues to support the important work CILI is doing by connecting our young people to internships and other opportunities that they would otherwise not have access to. The City of New Orleans is committed to finding and working with partners who will create pathways to careers that not only fill critical gaps in the workforce talent pool, but also expand access for our students that meet them where they are with grants and other funding resources to make them whole. Since 2021, we have been excited about the incremental growth of the organization's cohorts and we are confident they will continue to match our young people and their talent to industries and people who will nurture them and help them advance. Sunae Villavaso Director of the Office of Workforce Development 2nd Annual Fundraiser Magazine | 03

from Perry Sholes Founder and CEO

Wow, it's now been four years since this organization was a 5-page PowerPoint concept deck I shared with my NORLI 2019 classmates. We have come a long way, and yet there is still so much to be done. I have always believed that shaping good citizens takes a village. Now, I realize just how important it is for everyone to come together and work intentionally to build a purpose-driven organization. I am blessed to have had a career path through two significant consumer products companies: Nabisco Foods and Kraft Foods. This period was truly transformative for my career. It gave me a remarkable opportunity to experience the corporate world—a rare chance for someone from my background. It helped me better understand global leadership and organizational development. My assignments spanned both domestic and international divisions. That's where I cultivated a passion for guiding interns across various corporate functions at the undergraduate and graduate levels. My passion for training and developing talent has been a constant throughout my career. So, it was no surprise when the early stages of CILI began to take shape in late 2018. My acceptance into NORLI acted as the catalyst for CILI's inception. I am deeply grateful to have shared my CILI dream with Stephen Reuther, who offered both challenging perspectives and dedicated support —upon both myself and CILI. I'm grateful to my NORLI peers, who played a crucial role in validating the concept. Many of them believed in offering advice and guidance, and several still contribute and serve to this day. Thanks to their initial support, we developed a model that enabled us to launch and begin our work successfully. Our mission is to team up with universities, community organizations, and employers to build a system that develops and keeps diverse talent in Louisiana. We aim to prepare college students for careers that boost the economy and lead to success in the state. Our goal is to reduce unemployment and underemployment among college students from BIPOC backgrounds.

The work has been both challenging and very rewarding. Applications opened in December 2020, and we formed our inaugural Cohort, followed by our first Leadership Immersion in February 2021. Yes, good things happened during the pandemic. After dedicating the initial two years to testing concepts, developing systems, and piloting, we are now confident in moving forward with our work and expanding the organization. We're growing by focusing on clear organizational structures for the Board and staff — forming strong partnerships with students and creating programs based on what we've learned. Our Board has been intentionally populated with professionals who understand the work being done. With the recent appointments, we have set up a structure for succession and opportunities to continue strengthening the team of leaders strategically who will guide the organization for several years to come. The addition of a Chief of Operations with an impressive background and experience has enhanced our staff, covering essential areas for our future success. The CILI support team is building the infrastructure to maintain the intimacy we enjoyed during our pilot and expand our ability to impact more students. Our programs are designed to encourage strong connections with partner organizations. This approach allows us to spend more time in person with students, which in turn helps us establish deeper relationships and trust with our coaches and staff. We've established distinct program brands to make it clear who we're serving, how we're delivering services, and the number of students with Cohort #4 we're ready to make a positive impact. Lastly, and most importantly, we know that coaches and coaching play a vital role in our engagement and overall success when working with students. Previously a volunteer position, we are now making investments across all levels of our coaching infrastructure. One of our founding volunteers is taking on the role of Lead Coach, responsible for guiding, facilitating, and meeting essential program goals. As we gear up for our expansion, the next 12-24 months hold immense excitement for CILI. From the strategic plans of our Board to the daily interactions on campus with students, we're all set for the next chapter. Join us as we build a stronger community across Louisiana – your presence makes a difference!

from Rachel Massey Weiss Board Chair

It has been a pleasure to step into the role of Chair for CILI. I am fortunate to have been part of a group of NORLI Class of 2019 alumni who were intimately involved in working through the strategic needs assessment and development of this organization. The evolution and growth of CILI through its pilot phase has been a phenomenal experience and has provided lessons for our future. We are poised to “scale up” and grow CILI in several ways. One of our first priorities has been to build a talented and purposeful Board of Directors. With recent Board appointments, we are positioned for leadership continuity through succession planning and stewardship with an intense focus on our mission to serve the BIPOC college student population throughout Louisiana. Importantly, we have hired Perry Sholes, CILI’s founder, as our CEO. This has allowed us to place the organization’s visionary in a primary leadership position to continue the work necessary to achieve the “scaled-up” version of the organization. It’s important for the Board of Directors to guide CILI through the next phases of growth. I am excited to leverage my years of experience developing leaders through a state leadership development program and, more recently, supporting a collegiate alumni association to benefit the goals of the organization. Our Vice Chair and other members of the board bring relevant experience and natural skills that will collectively help guide CILI’s immediate and long-term future. We look forward to your continued support. Rachel Massey Weiss

THE CILI STORY WHO WE ARE The Career Immersion & Leadership Institute (CILI) is on a mission to create, find, and strengthen pathways for college students of color to access employment opportunities and competitive wages throughout Louisiana. Our flagship fellowship program connects BIPOC students to paid internship opportunities in Louisiana and provides nearly a year of soft skill development training to support both personal and professional growth and success as students transition from academic to adult life.

WHAT WE DO CILI is bridging the gap between higher education and meaningful employment for students of color and enhancing corporate DEI initiatives in the process. Since 2021, our fellowship program has equipped 109 BIPOC college students with the skills, connections, and experience they need to attain and succeed in corporate careers. Fellows take part in year-round personal and professional development programming that includes: Monthly workshops on topics ranging from business etiquette to professional branding One-on-one soft skill coaching and individualized support on career fit, aptitudes, interview skills, and more Self-directed online learning and assigned readings

WHY WE DO IT CILI was founded in 2019 by entrepreneur and Human Resources executive Perry Sholes in response to the pervasive diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) issues he witnessed in Louisiana after working with some of the country’s leading consumer products companies. In particular, Sholes saw the need for an organization that could connect local BIPOC students to employers, who too often fail to tap into diverse talent pools from the local market during recruitment. In Sholes’s home state of Louisiana, people of color reach increasingly higher levels of educational attainment but have yet to close sizeable disparities in the workforce, with data showing that Black college graduates lag behind their white peers in high-wage job attainment, despite the presence of six HBCUs in Louisiana. Due to historic, systemic inequities, many BIPOC college graduates do not have access to networks of professionals who can open doors to high-earnings career pathways. This unequal access results in stark disparities in generational wealth: according to the Brookings Institute, the median net worth of a white family in 2016 was nearly 10x that of the average Black family. Meanwhile, Louisiana continues to struggle with talent retention. Though several collegeand career-readiness programs exist for Louisiana high school students, there are no other programs of CILI’s magnitude focused explicitly on preparing college students of color for professional success, nor on keeping that talent in Louisiana.

SCALE UP WITH PARTNER PROGRAMS In Spring 2023, CILI teamed up to open doors for a group of Loyola students majoring in accounting and marketing, and the results were fantastic. 5 Loyola students landed paid internships with local employers thanks to this successful collaboration. They also had the chance to attend exciting events, including CILI’s June Leadership Immersion, the Black Chamber of Commerce Policy Luncheon, and a special Fellows reception. Dr. Yancy's students made a powerful impact, strengthening our ties with accounting and finance majors and leaving a lasting impression on Loyola University.

MICHELLE CRAIG

Diversitea, a beacon of empowerment for women, recently introduced over 50 students to CILI, sparking a wave of inspiration. Notably, Isobel Costello and Kaprii Walls, 2 remarkable interns, found their professional paths through CILI. While several students embarked on a transformative summer abroad, the doors of opportunity swung open for many. DiversiTea Divas, in its 11th year, has been a guiding light for over 1,000 young women in NOLA. Through Tea Talk events, mentors share invaluable insights on careers, post-graduate studies, internships, and more. With the support of generous sponsors, Diversitea continues to offer scholarships and internships, unlocking a world of possibilities for students, shaping futures, and bridging generational gaps. The journey has just begun, and Diversitea's mission is to reach even greater heights with every event, creating opportunities and nurturing talent.

In the Fall of 2022, the Louisiana Educate Program (LEP) teamed up with CILI to place interns. Our very first session drew in 88 LEP students. We hosted six career development workshops right on the ULL campus, with an average of 35 students showing up for each session. 29 ambitious LEP students completed the Fellowship application and earned a spot in Cohort #3, set to launch in the spring of 2023.

“I loved that CILI seemed very ‘plug & play’ – they’d find the interns, do some screening, train them, and I went into it planning to hire 1 CILI intern, but loved the 2 Fellows we interviewed so much that I hired both. They came in better prepared and more mature than people I had on staff. Whatever CILI Fellows learn in those workshops, I wish every entry-level employee could learn those things. the interns could slide right into our existing internship program.” –Jessica Dandridge, The Water Collaborative

“Swanson's partnership with CILI has been both fulfilling and seamless. The students arrive with the professional and interpersonal skills that we seek when hiring individuals to join our team. It has been a great opportunity getting to expose these enthusiastic students to an industry where minorities are vastly underrepresented and ultimately give them the tools to find jobs within the industry.“ – Kristin Swanson Scott, Swanson Insurance Agency

"Working with CILI was a delight. We met an incredible intern that was so qualified that we have hired them in a part time capacity while he finishes his undergraduate degree. I look forward to another productive summer internship season with Perry and his team" – Beth Burvant, COOL Cooperative
