The Gamecocks compete in the Eastern Division of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). Steve Spurrier is now the head coach, and the team plays its home games at Williams‐ Brice Stadium, also known as "The Cockpit". It is the 20th largest stadium in college football. The Carolina‐Clemson Football Rivalry is the largest sporting event in the state of South Carolina. Since 1960, this game has switched between both teams' home stadiums. It has been called the "Palmetto Bowl." South Carolina's so‐called "border rivalry" with Georgia dates all the way back to 1894.

The Gamecocks The unique name, “Gamecocks”, came from Thomas Sumter, a South Carolina war hero who was nicknamed "The Carolina Gamecock" during the American Revolution for his fierce tactics in battle, despite his diminutive physical size or the small size of his regiment. In describing how Sumter fought, a British General said that Sumter "fought like a gamecock." Despite only having a few national titles, several league championships and tournament titles have been won over the years. Tim Brando of CBS Sports was quoted saying "You won't find any more loyal fans in the country than those who follow the South Carolina Gamecocks."
