MA SONRY RES TORATIO N “Masonry” can mean a lot of things. Understand your materials, and then identify any threats. Attention to detail, both in matching materials and integrating them, is valuable. Sound craftsmanship is critical in achieving aesthetic harmony , keeping moisture out and ensuring continued longevity.

ROO FING REPAIRS A ND R E PL AC E M E NT Remember, oftentimes first glimpse does not reveal the true issue. Historic structures were built to last. Clay roofs are durable, but the membranes below are not as much so. Once the problem has been dealt with - maintain, maintain, maintain!
3
WOOD, WINDOWS A ND D O O R S Wood and glass are more brittle than many historic elements. If restoring is not an option, historic photos and plans can be useful in understanding the original window profile, which should be recreated.

I N SUL AT ION Historic homes should be cherished. So too should sustainable practices. Effective insulation will not only make life more comfortable, but will also cut down on energy costs. Keep in mind proper installation requires an understanding of thermal transfer in order to avoid moisture issues.

PA I NT AND PL AS T E R Look for signs of lead paint. If any is detected, remove it immediately. Consider working with specialists to gently reveal past layers of paint in order to find the original. Many plaster molds from past eras exist today. They are worth searching for in order to recreate architecural flourishes. Patience is a virture, but can be very rewarding in achieving authenticity. IAA is a design studio committed to excellence through exploration, experimentation and innovation. We are inspired by responsible design, and incorporate the most current elements and philosophies into all we do. We have partnered with the Kansas City Museum since 1996. Over the 20 years since, we have restored Corinthian Hall and other estate buildings. Currently, we are designing an interior renovation and addition intended to transform the local landmark into a vibrant, forwardthinking regional institution.
