xploration of Needs This is an exploration of the needs which I have investigated and the opportunities within them. WHAT?

WHO?

Redesign of hospital food; the packaging and contents to help infiltrate positive thinking and also make them ergonomic for the weakened patients. Hospital patients and staff

Observation of the current hospital food and the reactions of the patients at meal time. "Operation Hospital Food" - A lifestyle program where James Martin is dedicated to improving hospital food standards.

• •

SWOTS

To common knowledge, in order to successfully heal we need to have the right attitude. Due to today's current standards of hospital food and its packaging, patients feel reluctant to eat their food and sometimes are unable to open the packets. The food packaging isn't ergonomic for weak patients and the quality of the food is not to a high standard and needs to be improved.

•I have experience with Illustrator •I have access to technology such as 3D printers

.I will learn more about cooking •I have access to a professional designer .It will give me a chance to design something beneficial for weakened people

Example of Australian hospital food

IMPACT STATEMENT

WHY? Need:

Research

•I have very limited experience with cooking •I am not sure if I have the ability to design a new mechanism .This project has too many components

.My lack of skill may set me back in terms of timing •This project contains a lot of components which I may find difficult •I would need a lot of assistance with every component .I may not be able to get through it all •The required technologies (3D printers) may be inaccessible.

This idea is very large, possibly too broad and probably not suitable for a project with these time constraints. However, I am fond of the idea of learning more about cooking and using design software such as Illustrator to create the packaging. I am not going to choose this idea as it appears my lack in skill, the size of the project and the required technologies potentially being inaccessible are far too many threats and weaknesses. 2

WHAT?

NO WHY? To redesign the juice tetra-pack to be Need: recyclable with a graphic focus on the importance of recycling aimed at primary school children.

WHO? Australian primary school students.

A lot of waste is created by juice cartons; the plastic straw, the cellophane casing and the tetra-pack itself. Children are the biggest consumers of juice boxes in Australia. As the number of waste grows, educating children about recycling becomes increasingly important.

"Because I am a tree hugger at he art, I always buy 1 arge bottles of juice which I know are recyclable for t he house. But are a 11 those little juice boxes recyclable? Good guestion, let's look into wha t can be done to de-

Quote from-"Diabetes and Juice Boxes. Are they recyclable?" on Shesugar.com halles1

"Cartons keep your chicken broth, soy milk and orange juice fresh, but their melding of multiple materials - paper coated with plastic and aluminum - has made this product packaging traditionally difficult to recycle."

Quote from- Earth911.com on recycling milk and juice cartons.

.I have experience with Illustrator 4 have an interest in environmental awareness

.I don't have an in-depth knowledge of sustainable materials and am not that interested in researching about them. .I have never created a model on my own before

•The target market is extremely accessible •The design component would be fun

.Construction would be timeconsuming •Material research would be challenging •There is a possibility that an alternative from the tetra-pack is impossible

IMPACT STATEMENT This idea is quite different from IDEA NO.1. It came from looking at food packaging. I started off by thinking of the water bottles given to patients, then decided fruit juice would have more variety I then began to brainstorm the packaging ideas behind the juices which brought me towards juice cartons and tetra-packs. This sparked the idea that I could change this to an environmental project and design the tetra-pack to be environmentally friendly. Condensing the idea to an environmental project led me to believe this was right up my alley. I am very interested in graphic design and have done previous projects using Illustrator before. I am also really interested in addressing the issue of unnecessary waste. Mere is currently a huge range of juice boxes on the market today yet none appear to be recyclable here in Australia or aimed at teaching children about recycling thus there is a strong need. However, I am feeling more excited about the graphic design element on the packaging than I am about the construction of the recyclable box. For this reason, I have chosen to discontinue with this idea and brainstorm some ideas for a more graphic design based project.

ir WHY? WHAT? Rebranding of Fudge, a hair products brand, N d: including the redesign of the logo, website, creation ee of an advertising campaign and the improvement of the current packaging for their 'Paintbox' colour range. WHO? To be marketed at females of 14-25 years of age who have an interest in fashion, trends and hair styling.

The current branding and design of the products should be changed to meet the new market due to changing trends and a growth of consumer opportunity. The logo, website and packaging are out-dated and target a masculine market, which disregards the more profitable market opportunity.

IMPACT STATEMENT AND JUSTIFICATION OF CHOICE

• •

Through the use of the cognative tool known as a SWOT analysis, I have been able to really thiknk about what could potentially go wrong if I was to choose this project idea. With some thought I decided that this idea really speaks to my interests and capabilities. As evident in my SWOT analysis, I feel that my interest in this project will open up more opportunities to learn new skills, help me stay motivated and will also allow me to delve into an area which I may lead myself into following school. I have experience personally with the brand itself and a thorough knowledge of its market to know that there is a huge opportunity to design something very different, unique and interesting. I have experience with the professional software such as Illustrator, however, I will need to expand my skills and learn new tricks in order to make my design look competitive to what currently exists. If I am to create a website, an add campaign, logo and new packaging I will need to organise my time really well, but as I said, I am very inspired by this project idea and I think my interest in branding and design will help drive this project to completion.

IMPACT STATEMENT: The above survey responses come from two different surveys which were handed out over the internet to people of the target market. Having done market research and an evaluation of existing products has given me insight into what makes good branding and what the target market may be interested in. The current trends research is featured on the next page. This information will be carried through to my Criteria for Success. 10

This trend was very common throughout 2012 and is estimated to continue through to 2013. It features colourful geometric prints of a chaotic nature. It is featured through ' Tumble, the social blogging website which majoritvely is aimed at girls of my target market. Through my observation of New York Fashion Week prints and the newer images I have seen, an adaptation of this print is likely to be popular in 2013; a more simplified array of geometric prints featuring checks, straight lines and diamonds.

Project Proposal and Management

OP OS a

Proposal

Here I will evaluate the need, the brief, specifications and criteria to evaluate success.

Criteria for Success

In today's contemporary world we have a rapidly growing population with thousands of different cultures, trends and styles. Fashion has adapted and changed over time. Today we see thousands of trends spreading over into niche groups. Hair styling has been one aspect of fashion which has changed majorly, with products and brands adapting to the current needs and situations of the market. Currently, women who are interested in hair styling and upkeep are bombarded with such a range of choices when buying their hair products. The issue here, is that with so many different brands and products which all have a similar use, it becomes more about the packaging and branding than anything else. A good example is Coca Cola. Studies have shown that when blind folded, 90% of people preffered Pepsi over Coca Cola, but when given the choice between the two, its Coca Cola's famous packaging and branding that wins the customer. The relevance of this shows that good marketing and branding is crucial when in a competitive environment. Fudge, a hair products range which is currently very popular amongst women of 15-25 years of age appears to be surviving by its range of unnatural hair colour dyes under the name of `PaintBox'. In Australia, they are one of the only brands which sell temporary colour dyes in their range at an affordable price. As stated before, hair styling trends are always changing and a rather large trend at the moment is the unnatural hair colour trend. Whether its pastel or bright, fudge TaintBox' is perfect for young females who want to make a temporary fashion statement. The market opportunity for Fudge should be huge however they are unspoken of and undervalued due to a design in branding far too masculine for their market. The opportunity here is to rebrand Fudge with a more feminine appearance which corresponds with the current trends, this would not only increase their sales in their `PaintBox' range but make them more noticed for their other products. To design, create and evaluate the rebranding of 'Fudge' hair products, including the redesign of their logo and packaging of 'PaintBox' marketed at females of 15 - 25 years of age who have an interest in fashion trends and hair styling.

'P- ,M,IFTERS )

All components of rebranding project must include the same information as the current designs. Must be original Must be ethically designed and appropriate to market Packaging must comply with the Australian standards.

IMPACT STATEMENT:

The information I currently have has helped to give me the criteria to evaluate the success of my project. I will now be able to use this criteria as ,auidelines when completing initial sketches and analysing my progress. If I meet all criteria when I have completed the design solution, it will mean that I have successfully achieved my goal. To ensure I meet these criteria, I will need to progressively evaluate my designs. According to my action plan, I will need to discuss the factors affecting design, which will be influenced by this criteria. 13

Pro ect Develo ment and Realisation ACTION PLAN SECTION TWO

Factors Affecting Design

This action plan is going to help direct me through this section. It shows what I have to do and what steps are needed to be done before others. Likewise to the other section, I have placed the corresponding bubbles with their respective sections, to help display my process. 14

In this section I discuss the appropriate factors which will affect my design.

Affecting Design

Aesthetics, Ergonomics, Appropriateness and Function. Aesthetics is the way in which the design looks, it's appearance. WHY IS THIS A FACTOR FOR MY DESIGN? Due to it being a rebranding project, aesthetics affect the direction in where my design goes. They are essential to fulfilling my criteria for succes and appealling to my target market. If the aesthetic isn't successful with my target market in the experimentation phase, then I will need to reconsider the design. Ergonomics is the way in which people interact with the product physically. WHY IS THIS A FACTOR FOR MY DESIGN? When I consider the packaging materials and form I will need to consider how it will work in its environment along with how the people will use it. This is also essential in order to fulfill my criteria for success as it needs to be made of materials that can get wet without being a hazard and also be able to open and close securely for reuse. Appropriateness is how the product relates to its environment appropriately. This can be in terms of national regulations and social or cultural expectations. WHY IS THIS A FACTOR FOR MY DESIGN? Being a branding project, I must consider the Australian standards in packaging (as evident in my criteria for success), i.e what information must be included on the box. I also need to consider the social and cultural ethics of the design whilst also appealing to the target markettarget market. Function is how the design functions as a product, what it does. WHY IS THIS A FACTOR FOR MY DESIGN? I have to ensure that the information on the packaging clearly communicates the design, as evident in my criteria for success I have to also ensure that the logo is able to be manipulated and repeated in numerous places and is memorable.

IMPACT STATEMENT:

These factors are going to direct my designs further and determine some decision making throughout the process. Each of them incorporate elements of my criteria for success as well which further establishes their importance. Next I will begin sketching initial ideas for logos and packaging then I will move those designs onto illustrator and begin experimenting with that. 15

Ask professional graphic designer Gill Allan and her team at Howe Graphics

Printing methods A large portion of my project is the display of my final product. To enable me to have a perfect representation of my graphics and packaging design, the graphics must be printed on to the model. This means I need to test and experiment printing methods. Seeing as though I haven't yet completed my packaging design nor the graphics, I will be doing this test later.

Adobe skills In order to successfully design and develop my project, I needed to have an adequate understanding of two of the most important resources, Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.

Aesthetics is a major factor affecting my design. It being a rebranding project, its appearance determines the project's success. Thus, using the correct software for a graphics project was an important choice of mine. I chose to use Adobe Illustrator as it enables me to develop sophisticated designs of professional quality and receive advice and tutorials from professionals in the industry. It being popular software also enables me to gain access to an abundance of online help if I need to quickly learn a new tool. I also find the software's interface very easy to navigate and experiment with. Adobe's software tend to have great integration, allowing me to use Adobe Illustrator alongside Adobe Photoshop without too much hassle which gives me a great advantage when creating graphic images, an important part of my project. Having the opportunity to use Adobe Illustrator enhances my design because it not only gives me a taste of the professional world of graphic design but it allows me to meet the requirements within my Criteria for Evaluating Success regarding the aesthetic qualities of the logo and packaging of my design solution to a high standard.

To test this software, I needed to have initial sketches completed. For practicality, I will use Adobe Illustrator to develop my logo concept and then test its appropriateness on the target market using a group testing method. 1,1

16

Working with Adobe Illustrator sometimes requires me to work with Adobe Photoshop as well and the easy integration between the two allows me to do this with confidence. I plan to have a significant amount of photographs and/or images incorporated into the design of my packages, which compels me to use photo-editing software along-side the graphic's software. In a similar sense to using Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop is a professional and industry used software, which gives me opportunities to create quality images and designs.

The appropriateness of Adobe Photoshop needed to be tested in order to guarantee that this was the software to use when I enter the production phase of my project. I experimented and played around with the colour editing tools in Adobe Photoshop. This wasn't a large experiment however it did prove the simplicity of the software and its general capabilities. I decided to use a photograph taken by someone I knew to test the tools with.

I then started with the hue/saturation tool to change the overall image's colouring. This proved to have been successful in achieving the bright green colour that I wanted.

After that I selected the 'levels' tool to further play around with adjusting the colouring of the image. I found that this could be useful for other images but perhaps not for this one.

This test proved to me that the software includes tools that are fairly straight forward to use but that they have an abundance of options to play around with. Something I noticed when using the software was the history-tracking table in the top right corner, which allowed me to make mistakes and go back without having to press undo and lose the changes I had made.

IMPACT STATEMENT: In relation to my project, I think I will be using this software in the production phase but I still need to learn new skills and play around with it some more to grow more confident in using it. I think I will find it very useful in alliance with Adobe Illustrator and hopefully teach me new professional skills that I can use to my advantage later on. The factors affecting my design include appropriateness and aesthetics, which I will need to address when designing. I feel that by using the professional tools such as Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, my design solution will fit more appropriately within the environment (if it were to be put on the shelf alongside other brands) because it would have most likely been designed using the same software. The aesthetics will be addressed simply by the fact that I am using the software to ensure the images are of a high standard_ This will also help meet the needs of the Criteria for Success including the fact that the packaging needs to be colourful and aesthetically pleasing to the target market. I see Adobe Photoshop to be well fitted ..„„malltgazabsaulogjaioject and will encourage a successful design solution. 17

Project Development and Realisation THREE Typography on Packaging Before designing the packaging, I need to research what the current Australian standards are in terms of typography. For example: Fudge Paintbox being a product used on skin, safety instructions and ingredients are important features on the design and must be the appropriate size and colour. To find out this information, I contacted Gillian Allan, a professional graphic designer and founder of How Graphics, asking about the general formatting regulations on Australian packaging. She then passed me on to a member of her team Ellie Martinez who provided me with the desired information. Ellie Martinez gave me the following information:

Regulations and standards on typography Weight statements generally need to be 2.5 mm - specifically the 'in' in Allegern statements must be bold Ingredients need to be a minimum of 1.5 mm point in height Positive and negative type must be at least 8 point. Negative font may have to be bold.

This method of research proved very successful as I gained all the information I desired. I will be able to use this information when I begin designing my graphics on Adobe Illustrator. Here is the estimated prices for the materials and equipment I will use in this section

Around $90 IMPACT STATEMENT: In relation to my project, the Australian Standards research was very important. If I wish for a professional looking outcome in my project, I must comply with current Australian standards in typography and packaging. When designing my final graphics on Adobe Illustrator I will need to check that my fonts are the correct height and that I include all necessary information and images. The finance plan is the outline of the mater* als I will use and the estimted prices, a lot of equipment is provided by my school and so I will not need to pay for them. Next, I will begin sketching initial concepts for the logo design and package desig 18

IMPACT STATEMENT • These initial packaging designs will help me when I begin my packaging graphic designs on Adobe Illustrator because I can see visually what works and what doesn't work. I know that I like the geometric theme with the aztec logo but am questioning it. I know that I like the cube idea because it works well with the name 'Paintbox and is unique, which meets my criteria for success. Next, I will create numerous logos on Adobe Illustrator and perform a group testing to test not only the reliability and appropriateness of the software, but also my logo designs on the target market. 21

P: I like the geometric style. M: -The diamond shape looks a little awkward. -Still looks like a logo for mountain gear!!!

I felt that if I continued using the triangle I wouldn't be able to move away from the sports wear appearance. I Began new research which involved searching current fonts. This is an example of 'Aztec' font from vectorrnonger.com .

I designed this idea after getting some inspiration from the aztec font picture. I then followed it up with a triangle, attempting to incorporate aspects of my criteria for success. P: I like the harsh lines M: Looks similar to a pre existing logo, thus, is not unique enough. I began experimenting with more aztec inspired 'F's. I felt that the 'F' was crucial as it linked the logo to the brand. None of the following designs made it very far due to the fact that I felt they weren't working. I also began questioning a few people in my class for general feedback, results were turning out positive but all agreed that the designs were too simple and weren't very interesting. I knew at this point that something was wrong with my direction and I needed to try new things. I started reconsidering the necessity of the 'F'. In my initial research it became prevelant to me that the logo didn't necessarily have to be based around the brand name, it just needed to be a memorable image. For this reason I drew up this design, a simple triangle. I liked this triangle a lot as it represented the aztec theme well whilst being memorable and modern.

P: Triangle meets criteria of working with current trends It is modern. M: Still too simple and doesn't look professional.

IMPACT STATEMENT • These designs all helped realise my initial concepts for the logo and branding. The triangle appeared to be working sometimes, yet as I made more designs incorporating it, my PMI analysis proved that it seemed to be a bit too simplistic and sometimes looked likesports wear. This would be a problem as it wouldn't be as exciting as I had wanted the logo to be, which according to my criteria for success was a necessity. I knew the logo needed to be interesting and unique and the direction I was heading in wasn't leading me towards where I wanted to go. The aztec idea was the original concept, yet wasn't giving me much inspiration nor was it proving to aesthetically please me or the people that I questioned. When looking over these designs, I knew I had to reconsider my aztec idea, I was afraid to go down a new path but my intuition was strong. This meant more research and experimentation was necessary. 24

So the new road I decided to go down was the "geometric" trend, which is a modern look that can look sophisticated and fits current fashion trends.

I-

This design was my first geometric idea. I liked it instantly as I felt it was simple, modern and versatile, however it isn't very feminine. Femininity is important for my design solution to address my criteria for success. At this point I thought I needed to include curves and rounded edges in order to make it more feminine, which resulted in the the design to the right. I like the rounded square because it reminds me of a piece of fudge and the curved edges are feminine.

Logo Development

1/1 I put a rounded square around the logo idea and represnted how the colours could differ in grey scale.

This design was idea and was ready for market testing! Market testing was going to allow me to see the effectiveness of the rounded edges and give me useful feedback. I liked the idea of the rounded square to symbolies a piece of fudge. I began designing a variety of different logo concepts incoporating the rounded square and cubes and tested different fonts.

MODERN NO. 20 FONT The 'Modern no. 20' font was chosen because it looked professional and reminded me of 'Vogue; however I felt that it was too angular against the rounded square.

FUDGE

Poor Richard

FUDGE

'Poor Richard' was originally selected because it was rounder than 'Modern no. 20' yet still seemed professional and sophisticated. I appropriated this font over a 3D rounded cube which I had made using the 3D Illustrator effect. I wasn't a fan of the way this font looked, but I liked the 3D cube effect.

LETTER GOTHIC STD I chose 'Letter Gothic STD' due to its simplicity. I felt that minimalism was popular with my target market. It is a contemporary font and I feel that it would work well. I immediately preferred this font over the others and began designing more logo concepts with it incorporated.

IMPACT STATEMENT

After some more experimentation, I now have at least one completed logo to test on my target market. Going on from here I will do some more designs using the preferred font 'Letter Gothic STD' and test the 3D rounded cube ideas. I hope to make at least six logo concepts before testing on my target market. I am pleased with where my logos are heading at the moment, but I still feel far from my final idea.

25

Project Development and Realisation I developed a few designs using the 'Letter Gothic STD' font. I applied the title on to diverse cubic shapes.

FUDGE Yellow circles are used for presentation purposes, they are not included in the individual designs. I really liked what I was coming up with. The logos without the circle around it were the ones I preferred the most and so I kept them aside for the group testing. I preferred them because they looked more together and I felt that the other one had odd proportions. To meet my criteria for success, my logo has to look professional, which the logo in the yellow circle does not fulfill. I was having issues with the 3D tool in Illustrator, so I decided to try and make my own 3D box using the pen tool. This was difficult, and the results weren't as pleasing as I had hoped. They looked messy and didn't meet many of my criteria for successes. For example, they aren't feminine and don't look very unique. I did not take these ideas any further. The aztec triangle which I had designed previously still appealed to me. I then decided to develop it further. I liked the developed triange design because it looked very 'aztee, meaning it suited a current trend and would please the target market. It also featured a hint of an 'F', alluding to the brand name in an interesting way. I felt that the title at the bottom makes it look softer but I was unsure as to whether or not it works. I put in the group testing.

I FUDGE

26

FUDGE

The logos to the left were spin-offs of what I had created for experimentation purposes. I was trying out the shapes I liked, especially the idea of the rounded cube. As you can see, I applied the triangle to the cube on the far left. I also liked both of these designs. They both meet aspects of the criteria for success and so I put them in the group testing as well.

The circle was one of the most preferred shapes according to my target market research, and since the triangle wasn't working for me, I thought I should experiment with it. I decided to place the circle around preexisting logo concepts, with minor adjustments.

Logo Development

Investigation and Research

I experimented with putting the 'F' in a cirlce, I added white lines as well to accentuate the curves and make it more feminine.

P: I like the contrast between the curves and the straight lines of the 'F'. M: Doesn't look versatile.

These are versions of the logo concepts that I adapted to suit the black circle rim. I liked the effect of the black rim and the use of the logo title with the shaded box.

Now that I have a large enough quanitity of logo concepts, I am able to test them on the target market. As I test these on the target market, I am able to test Adobe Illustrator software as well. I will do this with a group testing method.

Tests and experimentation of the success of Adobe Illustrator designs can be done through group testing. Group testing is a method which professional graphic designers such as Gill Allan regularly use to certify that their product meets the requirements of their brief. A group testing is the process of selecting a group of people who fit within the target market to share their opinions on designs, models or prototypes of work. This can be done in numerous ways. I used the method of group testing to test my logo designs on the target market prior to production to ensure I was going on the right track. This would provide me with feedback and advice directly from the target market and allow me to make choices regarding their preferences, which would help my solution meet the requirements of my Criteria for Evaluating Success. Some of these requirements include; creating a feminine design, an aesthetically appealing design for my target market and also that I am keeping up with current trends.

3

Present each idea alone and/or side-by-side and either a) ask them to vote for their favourite (to receive quantitative data) or b) ask for feedback on each individual design and the pro's and cons of each (to receive qualitative data) Analyze data into a table and finalize results 27

When conducting primary research it is important to ensure that you consider the appropriateness of questions and not to offend anyone. It is also important to allow all members to have their say without feeling swayed. When conducting the group testing it is crucial that I don't interrupt anyone and ensure all people are aware of the possibility of being quoted.

Investigation and

Research Group test ideas

I showed one black and white version and one coloured version to 30 people who fit my target market. I asked qualitative and quantitative questions, to name a few, "How would you describe these logos?" "Which shapes resonate with you more?" and "Which logo is more memorable?"

FUDGE

FUDGE

The quantitative results showed that the people preferred the top left and middle left designs. The qualitative feedback I was given included the following: The incorporation of the 3D fudge symbol worked well with the brand name and was considered memorable

The square and cube shape was popular

The black circle was a preferred feature and helped modernize the brand which was also regarded as simplistic yet 'trendy'

Rounded edges appeared more feminine

IMPACT STATEMENT:

The experiment was very helpful as it proved to me that I was able to use the Adobe Illustrator software and create designs and images that appealed to my target market. Although I hadn't expenmentedwith other graphic imaging software, I am feeling pretty set on using this one for production because I feel that if there was a better software to use (in that another one produces higher quality graphics in an easier way) then it would be more common and also used in the professional world. I also feel that if I were to go into the graphic design industry post-schooling then it would be a lot more useful to use the same software that they would use in the professional world andhave those skills prior to entering the field. I feel that I am comfortable with using Adobe Illustrator in the production phase and that I can get help if I am in need of it. In terms of meeting my Criteria for Success, I am in no doubt that I will be able to construct packages and graphics that meet those requirements as they are generally more based around the concept of the design rather than its build. For example, regarding the logo's simplicity etc. I feel that would be determined by my own creativity and experimentation with designs than how well the software can create a circle. In saying this, I still believe that the appropriateness of Adobe Illustrator is justified and will enable me to meet the design solution. 28

After completing the group testing, I was able to begin designing logos based off of feedback and what the target market preferred. This was crucial to the meeting of my criteria for success.

Logo Development Group test ideas

I tried new things with the new logo designs. I made adaptations of old designs and followed the feedback from the last group testing. I kept the two most popular logos for the second group testing and the feedback proved that the black circle was a working feature. I introduced a few new ideas, one being the hexagonal shape. The hexagonal shape came through by the manipulation of a cubed square. On an angle, the cubed square resembles a hexagon.

00 4Ni FUDGE

HOGE

This was the second group of logos I tested. I used the same group testing method as before because it appeared to be a successful way of obtaining feedback from my target market. I tested on a different set of people who fit the target market criteria. Again, I used 30 people and I was ethical in the way I conducted the test. The quantitative responses showed that the top left and bottom middle were the preferred logo ideas. The qualitative responses showed: They didn't think they looked feminine enough, The general concensus was that the typography is boring and uninteresting suggestions were to change the font. They majoritively preferred simplicity over complexities in shapes, i.e the 3D rounded cubes weren't as effective as a 2D shape.

The target market responded well to the hexagonal shape

IMPACT STATEMENT AND WHERE TO GO NEXT? The second group testing was a lot more direct as I tried to ask more specific questions about the shapes and the fonts. I also asked each person for their individual thoughts, allowing me to obtain a broad understanding of their preferences. responses show that I may need to change the font to be more feminine. Next I will search online for more fonts so I can choose from a wider variety. I will also take on the hexagonal shape idea, seeing as though the target market liked it. 29

Project Development and Realisation The group testings gave me a lot of insight into what the target market prefers. I needed to look for a new font in order to make my logo more exciting and feminine. This would meet my criteria for success as it would be appealling to my target market and also help make it look unique and memorable.

r

I searched on external font websites for fonts which fit the following criteria:

Feminine: Unique: Trendy:

Logo Development

Make appropriate decisions based on market testing

Has rounded lines and edges. Not too many harsh edges. Maybe cursive Is not recognisable as another brand. Is different to usual fonts. Current trends, excluding Aztec' and 'Geometric'.

This criteria is derived from the Criteria for Success and also the feedback from the group testing. The reason I haven't chosen fonts which fit the caztec' and 'geometric' trends is due to the fact that they generally involve straight, harsh lines and do not appear very feminine. In order to stay trendy and feminine, it is recquired for me to search for other trends and styles that will suit the target market and criteria. These four fonts I felt fit the criteria the most as they all feature curves lines and they are all unseen fonts. As for being "trendy", some suit other feminine trends, such as 'Retro', Artistic' and `Girly'.

S:0 Engagement by Astigmatic One Eye Typographic Institute

Gessele by David Rakowski

Fudge luckje, fs familiar-huttish by opipik

Marmellata Jam by fontscafe.com

Out of these four, I broke it down to the three which fit a certain current, feminine trend. I was left with 'Engagement', (Gessele' and Marmellata Jam'. To choose between these fonts, I observed which trend would be more successful for the target market. I looked back into my target market research and read their qualitative responses from when I asked "What current trends are you into at the moment?". The most popular responses were (in order) "Aztec", "Vintage/Retro", "Freespirit", and "Hipster". For this reason, I chose `Marmellata Jam' by fontscafe.com as the font for the logo.

IMPACT STATEMENT Looking externally for fonts was a good move for my project, as I got to see a broad range of diverse fonts which suit different themes. This impacted my project to a large extent as now I have found a font that suits current trends (Vintage/Retro), is feminine and unique. Next, I will research more into the vintage and retro trend to further ensure it will work with my target market. 30

Investigation and Research

"VINTAGE. If you live on planet Earth, there is no way that you have not heard about this trend. Clothing, furniture, music-everything seems fit to carry a sense of nostalgia." "Vintage is the second largest community among the fashionistas" -Ana Moraes, blogger who conducted a survey of 6404 cfashionistas' A trend amongst my target market (15-25 year old females who have an interest in fashion and hair styling), is the vintage and retro renewal. As seen on 'Tumble, a commonly used blogging server, there are many blogs that are inspired by this trend and it seems to be here to stay for a while. This trend has been around for a long time, and is unlikely to go out of style. The trend is centred around natural imagery such as the sky, flowers and landscapes. It is very feminine and usually includes pastel colours such as pale pink and pale blue. If I wear to remain designing 'Aztec' and 'Geometric' styled graphics, it is possible that the designs wouldn't be deemed as 'current' once the final product is complete, thus not be successsful. The advantage to designing a retro looking package and logo is that it will remain on trend and in fashion for a lot longer.

IMPACT STATEMENT The research done on this trend has helped me visualise the direction I want to go with the packaging and the logo. It has also helped prove that it will be effective in meeting my Criteria for Success and appealling to the target market because it is feminine and on trend. Next, I will be finalising the logo and begin packaging 31

Being aware that the `Marmellata Jam' font works with the target market, I felt that I could finalise my logo and begin packaging design. The first thing I needed to do was fix up the text to make it look cleaner and smoother.

I made the 'F' a capitol and made the type an 'object' in Adobe Illustrator, allowing me to edit it further. I was able to clean up some errors with the selection tool and also remove the 'F' to copy into adaptations of the logo.

•

fudge

I smoothed out the inner parts of the 'D' and the `G' and some of the curved areas on the other letters. I used the Direct Selection Tool to do this. The font now looks a lot more professional as it has smooth edges. On the left side of this box is the 'before' of the error inside the 'D', on the left is what it looked like afterwards.

FINAL FONT TEXT

Once fixing up the minor detailing of the logo text, I was able to begin creating the image. The font is a strong enough font to work on its own, but as my target market research proved, logos with an iconic symbol are more effective. The hexagon shape was popular (as evident in the second group testing). For this reason I created a cleaner looking hexagon shape on Adobe Illustrator. I personally felt that since the font is quite unique, the symbol needed to be simple to help balance out the logo.

32

I thought that isolating the 'F' could work when wanting to represent the brand in a smaller space. I think this concept is appropriate with meeting the criteria and effective as a marketing choice. Keeping it simple can help make the brand be more memorable and identifiable.

Logo Development

To help me come up with more ideas for the logo, I looked to Tumblr blogs for inspiration. Seeing as though tumblr bloggers often fit within the target market, it is an appropriate source of information and research.

I found a blog called cmanolescene (manolescent.tumblr.com ) which had its own logo design. I liked the simplicity of the design and the use of image. Using this logo as inspiration, I developed a rather similar one.

I felt that the use of images makes it quite eye-catching and I liked the simplicity but I didn't like the overall look. I felt that it could be adapted better. I felt that I could possibly use images in my packaging rather than for the logo. (manolescent.tumblr.com)

The two adaptations on the far right I feel work the best. They fit the Criteria for Success which I had layed out in the beginning. The target market likes the hexagon and the font works with current trends. The logo is adaptable. It is memorable, simple and features an iconic symbol. The logo communicates the brand, as it features the name. It is eye catching due to its fun shapes. Finally, the logo is feminine, thus this logo idea meets all the requirements.

IMPACT STATEMENT My logo is complete and as stated above, meets the requirements of my Criteria for Success. Although my logo design is far different to what I had originally intended, I think it has gone in a better direction. Designing the packaging was dependent on having this logo completed and I feel that now I have clear ideas as to what I want the product design to look like. As mentioned before, I will probably use images as I feel they are eye catching and simple. The logo will be adaptable and versatile which I feel is a strong marketing technique. In terms of my progress through my project, this was a significant achievement and now I am able to begin the next step of the process! 33

me next set of pages outline and evaluate the developments, experiments and testing of the packaging and graphic design process.

Graphic Development

The packaging ideas developed were spin-offs from my Sketch and original design idea generation. I knew, from looking at my Idea Generation PMI Criteria for Success, that I needed to design packaging that ANALYSIS was in a tub and able to open and close securely. My new designs feature similar aspects from my first design concepts however are manipulated to suit the new logo design. I was still heading down the road of a plastic or glass jar. I decided to give it a rounded cube shape, instead of being spherical, to make it suit the brand and also allow more liquid to fit inside. It still had a screw top spherical lid. The idea was still to put this jar inside another cubic box. The cubic box would have different information on each face and perhaps an image behind it. ck,

P: -The cubic box idea works as it gives room to put emphasis on different aspects of the packaging. -The jar being a rounded cube works well M: The jar on the inside may be unecessary I drew a concept idea of what it could look like without the outer box and just keeping the rounded cube. This could potentially be a smarter idea as it is more cost effective and will allow me to focus on one graphic, rather than two. I was fairly confident with these design ideas and decided to test them on the market straight away. I conducted a group testing again, with another group of 30 people and also sent my questions to various fashion bloggers online who fit the target market description. I asked professional graphic designer, Gill Allan on her thoughts aswell. I showed them the above sketches and gave them multiple choice questions, in order for me to receive quantitative results. I then gave them the option to share their thoughts if they have any particular opinions to share, allowing me to receive qualitative data. The results showed me that the target market prefer the cube design over the spherical design. They like having the info spread across the sides and having a screw top lid. In short, the design was successful. Gill Allan explained the cost effectiveness of having no outer packaging and wrote that she thinks the cube idea is unique and works well with the name 'Paintbox' and should look more like a box, perhaps with sharper edges.

IMPACT STATEMENT: Knowing that my design concepts were successful immediately, I was feeling confident and ready to begin creating a 3D model. This step was very important in allowing me to brainstorm new ideas and the group testing helped justify why my idea was relevant and appealling, suiting my target market and Criteria for Success. Next I will begin testing the size and shape of the packaging. 35

Packaging Development

I began by creating a simple 3D model of a rounded cube on Google Sketch Up. I did this to test the software for compatability with what I wish to achieve and Begin 3D Modelling also test the 3D printer and the size of the product. I made a 40 mm by 40 nun to test scale rounded cube. Technology I found printing with the 3D printer easy and a good solution to creating models. Google Sketch Up, however, was far too simple and didn't offer enough tools to use to create complex testing forms. For this reason I have decided to use the 3D Printer in the future but try a different 3D software instead. Testing the Lazer Cutter The Laser Cutter is a relatively new technology and one which I haven't used too much in my experience. It is a technology that uses a laser to cut through different materials. Using a computer to draw up how you want the machine to cut, the laser cutter cuts away or embosses different materials seamlessly. It is used in industrial design mostly, but in this case I have used it to test the rounded cube functionality and appropriateness of the technology. To test this, I decided to print a cube net using the laser cutter to achieve perfect straight cuts and with the embossing function attempt to create rounded edges. 1 Draw up in Adobe Illustrator a general cube net to the scale of 40 mm by 40 mm

2 Create emboss lines along where the faces meet to attempt a curved edge 3 Convert the colours into laser cutter communicating colour and size L Print the net on patterned paper with the laser cutter 5 Attempt to construct the cube

6 Observe Results The photo to the right shows a The tests cube without the rounded edge attempt on the left and one with the emboss attempt on the right. The results showed that the paper did not withstand the embossing attempt and cut straight through, however, through this experiment, it became evident to me that embossing lines on each edge of each face of the cube wasn't going to physically make it rounder anyway. Despite this, the look of the image on the cube faces looked appealing and seemed to work well, however, upon the construction of the cube, the image's rotation shifted for each face, which was questionable. I will need to try and make it a continuation if I move ahead with this idea.

The laser cutter was the superior tool to use to quickly and effectively test the netting and appearance of the cube. It allowed me to see the size of the packaging and make further decisions to improve the design. The convenience of the technology fits well with what I will need to be doing to further improve the packaging of my design solution, which is important in regards to meeting the requirements of my Criteria for Success, including its aesthetic factors. Overall this resource was a success and proved to be very efficient. 36

IMPACT STATEMENT: The test of using the Lazer Cutter proved that it was an appropriate technology for cutting accurately. If you compared this technology to a pair of scissors, you'd find that the laser cutter can cut perfect straight lines, edges and corners far greater and can work on a much larger number of materials. I have chosen to use the laser cutter when I need to cut during production because of its precision and embossing functions, which other resources at my disposal (scissors) do not have. As for the cube, it should be changed to a straight edged cube to let the graphics and cutting process be far simpler. It was also far too small to fit the graphic and text over the top and it wouldn't fit enough liquid. Thus, I will need to make my packaging larger than 40 mm by 40 mm. Graphic

Beginning to design the graphics

Development

Since I was making a 40 mm by 40 mm cube at the start, I had begun designing graphic concepts on Illustrator. I decided to design the graphic layout for one dye colour first beause it will be using the same method on the other colour variations. I began by choosing which colour from Fudge Paintbox colour range I would start with. I chose 'Pink Moon' and created four 41 mm by 41 mm squares. I made these four squares to represent the different faces of the cube and coloured them differently. At this point I made the design choice that it would be far easier to make the cube straight rather than rounded as it would allow me to use the entire face for the graphic, rather than just a portion, and as the previous experiment proved it was easier to cut with the Lazer Cutter. This would provide me with enough room to fit all the original text of the products on the design.

As I had planned to use a continued image across the cube, I needed to find an image that would suit the light pink colour. Working with the title, I chose to work with a NASA image of the moon. My plan was to edit it and make it pink. I did this by creating a circle with a pink and light pink radial gradient to give it shape. I put this gradient over the top and made it opaque. I am using Adobe Illustrator to edit the image. I find this software easy to use and found it appropriate during the logo development process.

The images I choose must not be copyrighted and preferably free to use.

The gradient box during the process

Project Development and Realisation Graphic

To further develop the graphic I had to decide on the typography and font of the 'Paintbox' logo. I felt that it needed to be simple to balance out with the font of the 'Fudge' logo. I looked back into my logo development and decided on using 'Letter Gothic STD' as it works well and suits the target market.

Development Typography Development

I played around with putting the text over the moon. I felt that this was complicated as it means the other colour variations need an image in the centre. This wasn't going to be versatile enough.

PAINTBOX

The next design was in the scale of 164 mm by 41 mm. I had made 41 mm by 41 mm faces and aligned them next to one another. I made the faces 41 mm by 41 mm to ensure the graphics would completely cover the packaging. I placed the Paintbox and colour name below the moon in this concept which I thought was a improvement, yet I feel that I still need the 'Paintbox' title to be more versatile and need to design something that can go on all of the graphics. If I do this, it will keep the designs appearing as a collective, an important factor to consider. I put the 'Fudge' logo on another face, which is a questionable design choice. As you can see, I also created a hair swatch to represent what your hair would look like after using the product, a feature on most hair dye packages. To do this, I found a simple swatch of blonde hair and edited the colour using Adobe PhotoShop. I manipulated the image hue, saturation and brightness to achieve the correct colour.

IMPACT STATEMENT • As my first graphic design, I think I made good progress. I chose a font for the text and developed an idea for the layouting. In no way do I think this is close to my final design. I feel that it needs more colour and obviously I need to type up the text which is featured on the current designs, as stated in the parameters of my design proposal, I need to use the exact same text from the current designs. As for the 3D modelling, the oftware I used wasn't useful enough so I will find a better software. Next I need to continue developing the ackaging 3D model and also make adjustments to my graphic idea.

p 38

I decided to start using Vectorworks 2013 as a 3D modelling tool. I decided to focus on the lid aspect of the packaging, as I knew in advance that it would probably take me a while. In order to create a screw top lid I needed N Vectorworks - Object Propert... to create a thread. All threads on lids are different, but I tried to find one in the Bolt and Nut mm software's system. I couldn't find one, . Bolt Size: N136 and so I looked to external resources . Washer type: Regular and searched online on how to create a Bolt Length: 15 . Thread Style: Simplified screw thread. The advice given was to El Top Washer find the bolt and nut tool and get the E2 Top Lock Washer thread from there. I was able to find El Bottom Washer this tool but was unable to seperate the Bottom Lock Washer threadfor my own personal use and the W Nut properties and size were wrong anyway. , View: Front Vectorworks had a much larger range of R1 Use Standard Lengths tools and options to create a 3D model W Adjust Bolt Length E Show Center Line and my human resources, my teachers, ControlPointf)1X X 75 were able to teach me how to use the C.ontrolPointOlY Y: C basic tools. The advice I was given was that this software was going to be OK Cancel , appropriate in creating my screw top lid and product packaging model. -

Packaging Development Create 3D design on computer and print tests

•

My teachers and I collectively search resources such as the 'Help' menu to work out how to develop a screw thread. It came about that I needed to begin by working out the height of the thread and creating a line of this length. The 'Create Helix Spiral' tool would allow this line to ring in a circlular shape upwards, creating a helix. If I then create a circle and 'Extrude along path' I would be able to create a spherical shape which followed the helix. This method worked and will allow me to create a thread which I can add to another shape and create a lid. Before I could test this method I needed to create a base.

1 -I drew a 60 mm by 90 mm rectangle and

extruded it by 90 mm. This was to be the base of the product. At this point I realised that I needed to create a cavity within the base for the liquid. I made a cylinder and subtracted it from the base. I made it a cylinder because that would make it easier for people to obtain the product from the jar with their hands. The product is often applied using hands, so this was an important ergonomic factor to consider. 2 -I then began to create the inner part of the lid, which would be attached to the base. This is where the screw thread would go. I made a circle shape with the diameter of 40 and extruded it to around 25 mm. I then made another circle shape with a smaller diameter, extruded it to 40 mm and subtracted it from the other circle. This created a hole within the circle. The circle rim was then placed and added to the base. I was then ready to begin creating the screw thread.

-I decided the height of the thread would be 20 mm to fit on the circlular rim with another gap underneath. I used the 'Create Helix Spiral' and chose for it to do 2 turns with a diameter of 42. I made it a bigger diameter in order for it to fit along the outside of the circular rim. I then drew a circle next to it with the diameter of 5 mm and used 'Extrude Along Path' to make the spiral a circular shape. Making it a circular shape would make it easier for it to merge with another circular helix when twisting the lid on.

Packaging Development Create 3D design on computer and print tests

-The next step was to add the thread on the lid. After placing the thread in its spot, I got rid of the overflow on the top by subtracting a rectangle on the overhanging areas. I made sure the centres alligned with each other and added solids. The thread's larger diameter allowed it to run on the outside of the rim, however the circular shape was 5 mm in diameter which meant it went through the rim and on to the other side. I had to create and extrude another circle in order to subtract the inner parts of the thread.

Screw thread attached to circular rim Inner cavity to hold liquid

The base

After constructing the base, I needed to create the second part, the lid. 1 -The first thing I did was create a basic rectangle of 27 mm heigh and 90 mm length. I extruded it to 90 mm. I then subtracted another cylinder from the inside which would fit the base's thread tightly. I decided to make the lid a rectangle rather than a circle to make a perfect cube when it is printed. This was to ensure that I could not only fit the lid on, but I could fit the second thread in between the other gaps of the other thread, securing the lid in place. 2 -I then made a matching screw thread with the same proportions as the first one. I placed it within the cavity of the lid and added solids. -After this I needed to create a lid on top of the cavity. I created a square shape of 90 mm by 90 mm and added it directly on top of the lid. The lid was completed and the next step was to test the models by printing with the 3D printer.

Packaging Development

I used UP! 3D printing software and machinery to print the 3D models into plastic. This is a relatively new technology that is very useful when testing and creating models. When moving the model to the 3D printer, I halved its size so it wouldn't take as long to print and I could analyse the results faster, seeing as though I was mainly testing the screw thread's functionality. The printing process took around 4 hours. To remove the 3D printer from its plate, I used a scraping tool and pliers.

Create 3D design on computer and print tests

When using the 3D Printer, it is important to consider the safety precautions. Safety considerations when using the 3D printer include: - Allowing time for the product and machine to cool down before touching it. - Being careful when removing the print from its plate as it can snap and cause injury. The results showed the following: The screw lid did NOT work! The cavities worked well and the dimensions were fine, but the screw threads didn't twist together. The inner part of the lid also came apart, meaning I need to ensure I have accurately added the objects together before printing. I also realised that the lid was far to deep and should be a lot smaller. The good news was that the model was a perfect cube, meaning all I have to work on is the inner thread. I also have to double check that 90 mm by 90 mm is a good product size.

The lid and the base alligned together When I observed the Vectorworks file, I placed the lid on top of the base to see where I went wrong. I noticed that I did not align the threads accurately. The ergonomics of the lid When I was fixing up the problems with the thread, I decided to make it 80 mm by 80 mm rather than 90 by 90. This is because I measured out a 90 mm by 90 mm square piece of paper and got a few people with small hands to hold it, they thought it was slightly too big for their hands to comfortable grasp. 80 mm by 80 mm will work well. Fixing the problem! Before fixing the thread issue I made a new base and lid structure to make it more ergonomic. I followed the same steps as previous, but changed the proportions to fit into an 80 mm by 80 mm cube. As for the base's upper rim, I made it wider and shorter. It was important for me to ensure that it still created a perfect cube and so I had to change the dimensions of the base. When I began making the new thread, I decided that testing through 3D printing was wasteful and so I alligned my next following tests within the program and visually analysed whether they would fit. I resized the dimensions of the threads and repositioned them to fit numerous times, trying to get them to allign with one another. I did manage to allign threads together visually and proceeded to print a test out with the UP! 3D printer. I didn't resize this model because I wanted to see if the 80 mm by 80 mm size was better for people to hold.

testing The screw lid DID NOT fit together! It was assessed that the lid's thread was too wide. However, the size 80 mm by 80 mm was much better than 90 mm by 90 mm and was easier for people with small hands to hold. I felt that I could carve the lid's thread to be thinner manually and so the next step was to set up and begin using the dremmel.

I was advised to use this tool because it was small enough to reach into the gap of the thread and it was powerful enough to carve away the plastic. It would allow me to be very precise and I had a lot of control because it is a manual tool. When using the dremmel it is important that I stay safe and keep others safe at all times and that I comply with the WHS regulations. I never used this tool without a teacher and I wore protective gear such as goggles and a breathing mask to make sure shards of plastic did not get into my eyes or lungs. I also needed to make sure I didn't touch the tip of the tool when it was on as it would cause injury. I also warned others in the room not to get closer than 2 metres. I needed to clamp the lid into a stable position in order for me to reach into the accurate spots with the tool. This was difficult, as I constantly had to rearrange the lid to reach the different areas. The dremmel tip was slightly too big and so I had to be very careful not to damage the lid in the wrong way. I bit by bit began to carve inbetween the two threads to attempt the make the gap bigger. Since the tool was too big, I couldn't fit it the whole way, and so I needed to use the tip of the tool gently. Using this tool was taking a very long time and I wasn't achieving any results. It was a bit of a waste of time, but using it allowed me to gain experience in the workshop. Despite it being an unsuccessful process, it lead me to the realisation that I needed to go in a new direction. I needed to rethink the way the thread could be designed.

The lid clamped into stable position

IMPACT STATEMENT: The process of creating the screw thread is crucial in ensuring that I meet the requirements of my Criteria for Success. The various tests, usage of machinery and developments of the packaging have been very significant in making sure the packaging is not only ergonomic for the user, but aesthetically appealling and of course, functional. The Criteria for Success clearly states it needs to be able to open and close securely. The software Tectorworks' works well but the use of the dremmel was unsuccessful at completing the job I was aiming to do. The 3D printer is a good technology to use when wanting to test 3D models and helps visualise the progress in reality rather than solely on a screen. Next, I will need to find a new method of creating a screw top lid as it is evident the ways I was doing it it weren't working. 42

Packaging

I looked externally to try and figure out a new method. From analysing the screw threads on water bottles, I noticed that their threads were broken up, allowing you to place the screw on from any direction. I thought I would copy this method myself. The helix spiral needed to be set to '0.2 turns' so it would be short enough. The radius needed to be larger to fit the new lid. I also made the diameter of the helixes smaller in order to fit the lid thread better.

The separated screw threads

a Before I moved on to the lid, I got advice from my teacher about a way in which I could make this work.

The lid DID NOT NEED to feature a matching screw thread, but rather needed 'breaks' at the end points of the thread and two small pieces to guide the other thread through correctly. Instead of designing the base and lid first, I focused on the screw thread. Instead of four screw threads, I made two and overlapped them to give the guides more direction.

To make the guides, I drew an object that perfectly alligned with the gap between the screw thread. This meant it also had to be placed on an angle to allow the thread to slide in correctly. These guides would be placed within the lid. On the screw thread, which would feature on the base, I needed to place a break at both ends to stop the guides from running through.

I then created the base and the lid using the previous method, since it worked. Except, I made the base's upper rim wider and shorter to make it more aesthetically appealing. The base and the lid still needed to fit 80 mm by 80 mm so adjustments to the thread were made. It worked in the end, and created a perfect cube which appeared to align and as if it would screw well.

The Guide The Break The Thread

IMPACT STATEMENT: My external research and analysation of the water bottle and the use of my human resources was very helpful in steering me in the right direction for the screw thread and lid. In comparison to my previous progress, I am confident that this one should work The next step is to print a test with the 3D printer and make final adjustments. 43

Create 3D design on computer and print tests

I printed this model design in plastic using the UP! printer. I printed it half the size because I was just testing the screw mechanism.

ThP R111 The test showed that the screw thread worked! I was able to twist the lid on and off comfortably and securely. The only thing I needed to fix was the fact that the lid did not close on the perfect angle. To make the product more aesthetically appealling I will need to reposition the thread on the base slightly on a different angle. Fixing the problem! I angled the screw thread 30 degrees to the left and then printed a full size version of the model as I felt confident that it would work. The model still needed to be adjusted slightly more, but it was a definite improvement.

The printed attempt to fix the screw. Almost fitting.

I turned the screw thread slightly more to the left and printed another model in plastic with the 3D printer. When it was printed I gave it to a few people with different hand sizes to test its ergonomics and the lid's functionality. This model's lid fit perfectly on the corners and was able to twist open and close securely. It was 80 mm by 80 mm and measured as a perfect cube. No one had difficulty opening and closing the model nor had difficulty holding the cube. From here I decided that this model fit the requirements of the Criteria for Success as it is not only a tub but it opens and closes securely. This model works as a functional model of what the packaging would look like if this was to go into the market. In reality, plastic may not be the appropriate material, but this is a model of the functionality of the lid and solely for presentation and representation purposes. From here I was ready to focus on the design of the graphics. Due to its success, I printed another cube. This is so I am able to apply one of my finished graphics over the top of one of my working models to present how it could Create accurately sized look in reality.

non-working models for representation

IMPACT STATEMENT: This development of the packaging design was successful and means that I have completed a significant portion of my design solution. Evaluating in accordance to my Criteria for Success showed me that I had achieved the objectives and that my packaging would suit the target market. From the completion of the packaging development, I am now able to focus on the graphics and presentation. 44

Graphic

Since the development of the packaging led to a change in dimensions, I needed to apply this to the graphics. I created a new template of 82 mm by 82 mm squares to use for the different colour variations. Again, like before, I put 2 extra mm on each face side to make sure the graphics would fit on the packaging.

Development Begin designing the different package graphics Technique testing

I then started looking for a new external image to use on the design, seeing as though the moon wasn't effective. I chose to focus on the 'Pretty Flamingo' dye design because I felt that it would be easy to find a picture of flamingos. This turned out more difficult than I thought, as most images were either copyrighted or too small and I need an image large enough to cover at least 244 mm length ways and thus I decided to find a picture of something else which would present the same colour as the name suggests. I looked to the trend research and the abundance of floral imagery on vintage clothing. I felt that floral images would appeal the market and so I started searching 'pink flowers' and finally ended up with 'cherry blossoms' as my final idea for an image. I felt that in order to be coherent with the graphics, it was important and crucial and that I changed the name to match the image. It also outlines the need to change the names on my Criteria for Success, as during the initial research I found that some names were unsuitable for the target market and presented a rather negative image.

For this reason, I changed the name to "Cherry Blossom".

The image needed to be sized appropriately to fit the faces and be continued across without gaps. To do this, I firstly resized the image and cut it to fit the size of the template I had previously created. I then needed to break up the image into four faces, and to do this I created four versions of the cutted image and used the 'Clipping Mask' tool to cut the image to the size of the individual faces on the template. I fit the resized image over the template I had created and attempted to cut the first face. This resulted in deleting the rest of the floral image. This means that when I continue with this technique I will need to create four versions, to ensure I clip each face without it deleting. 45

Fixing the problem!

Development Begin designing I repeated the same steps as previous but this time I coppied the different package four versions of the tempate graphics and the image in order to avoid deleting the image like the last Technique time. I was able to create a clip testing of the first face perfectly, I then moved on to the next one and was able to clip that as well.

I followed the clipping mask process for all the faces sequentially. I clipped each face and alligned all the faces together to check that the image continued perfectly across them. This was successful and proved that the clipping mask technique was effective at achieving the desired outcome. I will be able to use this method when seperating each face in the future for other images.

Adding the text and logo The next step was to begin designing the graphics on top. I had previously realised that I needed to create a 'Paintbox' title on the graphic that can be easily repeated and continued on each colour variation in the range. What I did was grab the hexagon from the 'Fudge' logo and make it white and on 60% opacity so you can see the image through it. I placed this begind the Paintbox title and left space for the dye colour name to be placed underneath. The benefit of using the hexagon and the reason it is successful is the fact that it links the Fudge logo to the Paintbox logo, developing a continuation and sense of symbol for the brand. I have decided to keep this idea and am ready to move it onto the faces and begin adding the rest of the text.

PAINTBOX CHERRY BLOSSOM

IMPACT STATEMENT: The clipping mask technique test was important in allowing me to fulfill the aesthetic criteria of the graphic designs. The continuation of the image is crucial in making it aesthetically appealling, an important factor Lor the target market as observed in the market research. The development of the Paintbox logo was also very Enportant as it now directly links to the Fudge logo and will be able to be repeated on all colour variations. 46

Graphic Development

I started off by creating two more 82 mm by 82 mm squares for the top of the cube and the bottom. I alligned them with the other faces to replicate a cube net to make printing and cutting easier later.

I placed the Fudge logo Begin designing hexagon over the top face as the different package I think this will help make the graphics more eye graphics catching. It also shows the consumer what colour dye is inside. I also chose to do this as a marketing choice because it makes the brand's logo a main design feature.

PAINTBOX CHEPP B LO S SO M ?*i

I need to type up all the information from the current bottles so I can start displaying the text and designing the layout based on that.

It had come to my attention that displaying text over the faces may be difficult due to my choice in image. This may be a recurring problem. For this reason, I put a white opaque box over the last face so text is more legible. The legibility of the text is crucial, as stated in the Criteria for Success, the packaging design must communicate clearly what is inside.

I intend to leave the above face blank so that at least one face is solely the background image. This is to make it more aesthetically appealling, a criteria given by the target market.

I made another hair swatch but smaller to make room for other text. I placed it on the back face where I intend to put the directions of use.

The white box over the image to allow text to be legible.

IMPACT STATEMENT • The further developments of the graphics have been evaluated to meet the requirements of the Criteria for Success. To make it more aesthetically appealing I left a face blank and to make it meet the functional requirements I created an opaque white box to add legibility. Next, I need to type up the text from the current bottles. This is because it is mentioned in the proposal's parameters I must include all the original text. I also need to test the graphic application method which will be used at the end to attach a finished graphic to a packaging model. 47

Graphic

Since I had some graphic development, I decided to test the graphic application method on plastic. I was recommended to use Inkjet Decal Paper Transfers. I was testing to see the technology itself and whether or not it was appropriate in achieving the desired outcome and the technique used to see if I was doing it correctly.

Development Packaging Deve opment Technology

1 Firstly, I created an Adobe Illustator file with the image I had used and a version of the Fudge Logo. I did this because I couldn't use the entire graphic which I had developed as it was too big but I still wanted to test the image I was using.

2 I then printed it out, selecting in the printer options to not use too much ink. I ade sure I was printing in colour as well. I printed directly onto the white side of the decal paper.

testing

Technique testing

3 I waited for the print to dry before cutting my image out L I ensured I had a piece of plastic ready to test on. I made sure it was the same plastic that I had used for the model printing. I chose a piece which was also printed using a 3D printer.

5 I dipped the decal print in water for 30 seconds until the graphic began to peel off. 6 When it had fully peeled off, I applied it with my fingers onto the plastic and applied pressure.

7 Let it sit and dry for as long as possible 8 Observed Results Dipping the decal in water Applying to plactic and applying pressure At first I believed I had done everything correctly as it was able to stick on, the colour was vibrant and it was relatively easy to apply, however after a few hours it began to peel off. This is due to the fact I did not apply methylated spirits on the plastic before application of the decal, which is recommended. I will need to be aware of this when doing this in the future. Other than this, it seems like an appropriate technology to use for graphic application, especially since I am only creating a model and not the real thing. my technique will need to be improved, but I mostly did it correctly and I know what I need to do to make it work next time.

IMPACT STATEMENT • This test allowed me to check if the decal method for applying graphics on to plastic was appropriate. Although it did not work 100%, I know what I need to do for next time and will be able to make the improvements. For the development of my design solution, this test was crucial as it is directly linked to the success of my model representation of my design, which I need to create in order to show my designs. 48

The text for the graphic

Graphic Development

I had purchased a tube of Fudge Paintbox in order to copy the text onto my designs. Every detail from the directions to the ingredients was coppied onto my computer to then be detailed onto the graphic which I had designed. To comply with the Australian Standards which I have previously researched, I have made all the text the appropriate size font and style, i.e bold or regular. The warning messages must be in bold and the text must be at least 8 point.

Begin designing the different package graphics

I took all the information and began placing it around the graphic. The first thing I did was place the directions information in the spot I had previously decided on. I got rid of the hair swatch because it isn't necessary nor is it featured on the original packaging.

I decided to change the top and bottom face's background to a grey rather than the black, this is to make the bottom text legible and also make it more aesthetically appealling and give less of a harsh accent on the faces.

I also took into concideration the lid_ As a design feature I put the white opaque box along where the lid would be. This is a questionable feature but for now I think it works because it divides the lid and the base visually to add clarity to the mechanism. eP. Project Development and Realisation Graphic

Making the other dye colour graphics is dependent on mainly the background image and the colour of the hexagon in the logo. Another important aspect is the name, but the name will change depending on the image I choose. The images I choose must be copyright free and be large enough for the cube. Once I find an image for each colour dye I will be able to copy the same graphic as the 'Cherry Blossom' design. The second graphic I decided to work on was Fudge Paintbox's 'Yellow Fever: I quickly decided that 'Yellow Fever' was a crude name, as it is the name of a disease and isn't very positive. The image I needed to find was obviously a yellow image, and likewise to 'Cherry Blossom' I was thinking a floral image would fit the vintage trend, as mentioned in the trend research. I found this image of yellow daisies and felt it was appropriate for the target market. I thus named this colour dye 'Yellow Diasy'

As I had previously decided against using the NASA image of the moon, I began looking elsewhere for a different image that would suit the light pink colour. I have to ensure that the colour is different from "Cherry Blossom's colour, as one is darker than the other. I found this image of pink clouds and figured it suited the target market because of its natural vibe. I named it 'Pink Clouds'. I also edited the text on 1- 'le 'Yellow Daisy' design and the 'Pink Clouds' design to ensure it was legible on the packaging.

For this colour it was difficult to think of a suitable object or theme for the target market which would be a bright blue. I decided to search water animals and found this beautiful image of jellyfish, free to use, from an animal blogger's website. I decided that this image fit the name Electrib Blue' and would appeal to the target market as it has natural themes and is visually captivating.

Graphic Development PRODUL ON (at least 6 graphic designs for the Pain tbox range)

Green envy as a name didn't suit the target market as it was negative and didn't give off the right vibe. I searched for images which would make green hair dye seem more appealing, as it is generally not the most popular dye to purchase. I found this picture of a tropical island and decided to name the colour "Green Palms': When making the graphic, I would cut out the green palms and use them, rather than feature the entire picture.

51

Project Development and Realisation Purple Haze I kept the name 'Purple Haze' and found and image that percetly fitted the colour. The current bottle for Purple Haze doesn't feature the correct colour on the packaging and is very deceptive. This information is my own knowledge of how the colour comes out and from online research of the results. For this reason, I made the colour darker. I had to edit the image in Adobe Photoshop to appear more purple.

Graphic Development

(at least 6 graphic designs for the Paintbox range)

PAINTBO X PURPLE HAZE

Although I have reached the number of colour variations I had originally planned, I felt that I had enough time to do at least one more. This colour is a bright orange and I don't feel that the name does the colour justice. I chose this picture of a tropical sunset, because it continues the theme of nature and is also aesthetically pleasing. I decided to rename this colour `Sunldssed Orange' because it sounds more positive and feminine.

52

IMPACT STATEMENT • Finding the images to suit the dye colours allow me to create a display of the variations of the design. I chose images with appeal to the vintage trend which in turn appeals to the target market and thus the criteria for success. I was able to then merge these images into the same design layout as I had for 'Cherry Blossom' although I had to make adjustments on text colour to ensure legibility and clarity. I am now able to print a design out and test on the market.

Graphic Development Check the graphics size fits the packaging design

Test on

To test the graphics, I firstly ensured that I was happy with the current graphic design. I alligned the faces together rather than having them separated and proceeded to send it to the printer. I printed the graphic onto regular A3 paper. I then placed my design in the Lazer cutter, which I had previously decided was an appropriate technology to use. I alligned the Lazer Cutter to print accurately on the lines of the net. To do this, I drew up the cutting lines directly on the graphic in another layer so I was able to check if it alligned perfectly. The print and the lazer cutting was successful. I already was able to assess the design and realised the top face hexagonal logo was too big and the white opaque box where the lid would be looked odd and messy, thus not professional which is one of the criteria. Having it printed meant I could then proceed to sticking it on a cube base.

Target Market

I made a cardboard cube net, fitting precidely 80 mm by 80 mm on each face. I stuck the graphic down with glue. This model is only a rough model, which is why I haven't used better materials. This was done to test on the market and get feedback. I tested this model using the group testing method on 30 members of the target market. The qualitative and quantitative responses showed me the following preferences and feedback: The lid logo needs to be smaller

Clearly communicates the product

The text was legible and a good size.

They liked the fact that the ingredients and warning messages are on the bottom face

The white opague box where the lid would be is not a preferable feature.

They liked the continued image across the box

28/30 people preferred this model design over the current design

Seven colours will be an awkward number and nine is preferred.

IMPACT STATEMENT: Although this was step was supposed to feature after the final design choice according to the action plan, I have done it ahead of time in order to check the process with a target market group testing. The graphic model and test on the market proved that my designs appeal to the target market yet need to have slight improvements. I now know that I can leave the basic design concept as is and just make adjustments to fit th target market's preferences, such as removing the white opaque box. Next, I will make these adjustments and see if I have time to make two more colour variations. 53

Pro ect Develo ment and Realisation Graphic Development

Using the results from the group testing, I made the appropriate adjustments to the design to appeal to the target market. Another thing I needed to do was prepare for the cube tabs, with the net lazer layer on view, I bled the graphics over where the tabs are. This is to ensure the image doesn't have gaps in case the tabs show.

Now that I have some time, I will make two more colour variations seeing as though 9 presentation boxes will be more aesthetically appealling than 7. I will be able to lay them out in a more eye-catching way. I chose to work with th colour `Turqouise'. I feel that this name works with the vintage trend, and I found an image that correlates with the name.

Hrr The last colour variation I make will be a red, currently named 'Cherry Bomb'. This name is too similar to "Cherry Blossom; yet suits the vintage trend well. I have found a floral image of a red rose and renamed the colour 'Scarlet Red' to allude to the vintage red lips which will appeal to the target market.

Now that I finished the colour variation graphics I can get them all ready to print so I can begin PRODUCTION for the presentation models. Something I feel will need to change is the front face of the graphic. The Fudge logo does not appear on the front face of the packaging. To make the brand stand out more and be more memorable, I will need to include a larger aspect of the logo on the front than just the hexgon.

Fixing the problem! I added the Fudge 'F' to the centre of hexagon and changed it to the colour of the dye. I also made it opaque so you could see through to the image background.

IMPACT STATEMENT The process of fixing up the graphics and the creation of two new colours helped make my design solution meet the preferences of the target market. I have designed graphics that suit the target market by correlating them to the vintage and retro trend.. As noted in the Criteria for Success, I needed to make the packaging feature colours and images which please the target market, achieved by staying within the vintage trend. The packaging needed to be colourful and feature current trends, both I have successfully achieved. The product names have changed and the product inside is dear to the target market, as noted in the target market testing. thus, the graphics are finished because they meet all the requirements of the Criteria. Now that the graphics are completely finalised, I am able to move on to the production phase of printing and creating tion models of the packaging to show visually what they will look like. '

Model Development Production

Part of the Packaging and Graphic development is the creation of the models to present the final design solution. The next few pages explain and assess the process undergone in the creation of the models.

Stick graphics on to models

To create the model representations of the graphics and packaging, I needed to print out the graphics on heavier duty paper. I decided to use 160 GSM White, Hot Pressed bond paper. It was important to ensure that the graphics printed alligned the same way. This meant that prior to printing I needed to place the graphic netting at the same point for every graphic. I did the same with the Lazer Cutter cutting file. On the Lazer Cutter file, I created emboss lines on the edges where I would fold the net to make it easier and sharper. When it was ready, I cut individually cut each graphic with the Lazer Cutter. Having them cut out will allow me to fold them over 80 mm by 80 mm blocks.

Cutting 'Sunkissed Orange' with the Lazer Cutter The cut out graphics

IMPACT STATEMENT: With the cut out graphics I am now able to move on to placing them on accurately sized models. This will allow me to present the graphic designs in a more engaging way, and thus, appeal to the target market and also represent my design solution clearly. Next I will proceed to making 80 mm by 80 mm models. 56

Using plastic for the inside of each model prototype would be a waste and unecessary. I measured and cut out blocks of foam. The blocks of foam were the wrong width, so I needed to cut multiple blocks in order to stick them together. To cut the foam accurately, I first measured with a ruler the correct dimensions and drew up lines using a lead pencil. I then proceeded to use the Band Saw to cut straight lines quickly and easily.

Production

Stick graphics on to models

This resource is appropriate to use because it is quick and allows me to cut straight lines easily. This is because foam usually crumbles easily and can be difficult to cut with only a knife. The Band Saw is a very dangerous piece of equipment. It is very important that before using it I consider the WHS regulations. When using this equipment, it is crucial to wear safety apparel such as eye goggles and a face mask. This is because shards of the material can tend to smark out whilst being cut. Foam isn't a dangerous material, but it crumbles easily and when it is cut with this tool it, shards of fine pieces of foam can easily get in your eyes and mouth. When using it, I ensured I didn't stand too close to the saw, kept everyone else in the room away and kept my hands at a 5 cm distance from the blade whilst cutting slowly and never keeping my eye off of what I was doing.

The Band Saw and the pieces of foam ready to slice.

Sliced pieces of foam, ready to be stuck together

IMPACT STATEMENT: Following the safety regulations, no one was hurt whilst I was using this machinery. Using the Band Saw was easier than cutting the foam with a knife. The foam pieces were cut somewhat evenly and accurately, yet some have been accidentally cut on an angle, which I will be able to fix using a Sanding Disk, which will then enable me to stick the foam together using double sided tape, which will allow me to then glue my graphic designs over the top. 57

Project Develo ment and Realisation Production

To shape the foam blocks to be the accurate size, I used the Sanding Disk. This resource is appropriate to use because it will help me straighten out the edges of the foam blocks slowly and with accuracy and control.

Stick graphics on to models

The Sanding Disk

The Sanding Disk can be dangerous to use. To ensure the safety of myself and others, I let everyone know I was using it, wore protective goggles, a face mask and gloves. I wore goggles and a face mask to ensure shards of broken foam do not go into my eyes or my mouth and I wore the gloves because I was putting my hands very close to the equipment and needed to protect my fingers. The sanding disk proved very useful in straightening out the foam blocks. I was able to achieve the desired outcome. The next step will be to stick double sided tape on the blocks to stick them together to be the required size.

Sticking the double sided tape on the blocks

c1 tap I chose to use double-sided tape instead of glue because glue doesn't stick to foam very well and double sided tape is strong enough to hold each piece together. Since I am only sticking them together to create a basic mold of the shape of the packaging, I do not need to use high quality materials. Using basic materials will not impact the final design negatively, as they will be on the inside of the prototype just to form the structure of the real design solution.

Sticking the double sided tape on the blocks was relatively easy. I used two strips for each and managed to place the blocks together, edge to edge. This means I am now able to glue to blocks to the graphics and create my packaging prototypes.

58

To present the graphics, I glued the printed cube nets on to the foam blocks . I did this by using a regular glue stick and using the tabs and embossed folds on the print to shape a cube. I did this for all nine graphics.

Production

The graphic models turned out well, some have tabs on display still, and this is due to the foam not being 100% accurate and the graphics having 2 mm overlay, which turned out to be slightly unecessary. Overall, they work as a representation of how the graphics would turn out if printed on to the packaging which I had designed. Of course, the models do not include a gap for the lid, but with the cube design of the packaging, this doesn't matter.

Stick graphics on to models Group Test Final Design Solution

The next step was to create a display for the packaging models. I was given a simple box with a magnetic lid. I designed an image to go on the lid ofthe box. I ensured it was to the accurate measurements of the lid. I put the 'Cherry Blossom' image as the background, and placed the 'Fudge Paintbox' hexagonal logo in the centre with the brand's slogan written on top. "Think outside the box". This is where it became apparent to me that now their slogan makes more sense than it did before, as now the colour dyes come in 'boxes' in a cubed design. I glued the image I designed to the inside of the box. I then placed my cubes on the inside of the box, rearranging them to show different faces of the design. This was the display I showed to a large group testing in order to obtain feedback on whether or not I met all the criteria and successfully completed my design solution.

The box with 6 of the graphic models inside

IMPACT STATEMENT • The creation of the display was based on current product displays on the market today. Generally a box is used and includes the logo and an image. I coppied this idea because a box was fitting with the 'Paintbox' name and also their slogan "think outside the box". The box allows the products to be viewed at a professional level, meeting one of the criteria outlined in the Criteria for Success. The way the graphics have been designed allow a potential customer to view their preferred colour by looking at the logo colour, this is a good marketing technique as it makes the logo more of a featured image and required the customer to notice it. The display I made was used to test the design solution on the target market. I also included the 3D printed model of the packaging. The group testing information and results are written in the Evaluation section of this folio. 59

Project Development and Realisation Nr,l71,1,7#7,71171.7.WRI.

Working Prototype Development In order to show the packaging design and the graphic design at the same time, I needed to create a working prototype. To do this, I was to use the same Decal method as I had previously tested and stick a graphic net on to one of the 3D printed packaging designs. I printed one of my graphic cube nets on to the Decal Paper. I ensured I had all the appropriate materials ready before hand, including methylated spirits, which I had not used the first time, but was recommended to ensure the decal sticks to the plastic. When I had printed the graphic on to the decal paper, I let it dry. Once it was dry, I placed it on a cutting mat and used a ruler to mark the edges, to ensure I was cutting in a straight line. I used a stanley knife to cut along the edges because regular scissors weren't going to suffice. The reason I didn't use the Lazer Cutter was because the paper densitiy was different, and due to the qualities of the decal, I was unsure as to whether the decal glue would melt under the lazer.

Production

Stick graphics on to models

Cutting the graphic with the stanley knife Before sticking the graphic on, I realised that I wouldn't be able to place it on to the packaging design accurately if I didn't cut them into smaller pieces before hand. I cut off the bottom piece and part of the side piece using the stanley knife.

Using the same method used in the testing, I placed the bottom face on the working packaging design first, however I included stroking methylated spirits on top of the plastic with a paint brush. Sticking the face on was easier with the methylated spirits. To appy pressure, I used a rag instead of my hands to avoid the bleeding of the graphic. I repeated this for all the parts of the graphic.

Applying pressure to decal on packaging.

60

I applied the decal graphic to the working model well, although the extra 2 mm on the graphic (which I placed to ensure the graphic fit over the edges of the models) ended up unecessary and left excess graphic over the edges. Instead of cutting them off I just stuck them over the edge because I figured it didn't matter too much, however you can't read the bottom face text anymore. This would be a problem if I was to put the product on the market, but as a model/prototype, it doesn't matter.

Production

Stick graphics on to models

The prototype with the decal over the top needed to then be cut along where the lid is to allow people to open and close the model. However, what I hadn't realised is that the decal is so delicate that if I was to cut it, it could easily rip. To avoid ripping, I decided against cutting it, meaning this is no longer a fully functional model, but rather a model to show how the graphic looks on an accurately sized and printed packaging.

The model/ prototype over the 3D printed packaging

IMPACT STATEMENT • Creating the working prototype did not work, however I was able to get the decal to stick well and I am now able to show a higher quality model of the design solution. I know that if I was to make the working prototype again, I would change the size of the graphic net to fit more accurately on the plastic and I would cut the graphic where the lid is before applying it to the model. Now, I have finished the product completely, having a working packaging model and nine model representations of the graphics. This has been evaluated in the Evaluation section of this folio. 61

EVALUATIVE STATEMENT. The materials used throughout the design and production process added up to a total of $130. A lot of the materials were provided by the school, this includes things like regular A4, A3 Paper, materials such as cardboard and foam, the large machinery and equipment (3D Printer and plastic, Band Saw and Sanding Disk), the tools (The Dremmel) and software (Adobe Illustrator, PhotoShop and Vectorworks). The final price is $40 more than what I had originally expected, this is due to the addition of materials and the increase of material prices. All materials added were necessary in order to achieve the successful results of the design solution 63

Project Evaluation

Life vcle Analysis This page shows the Life Cycle of the most significant material used throuhout the design and production process.

The most significant material of the design solution was paper. Without it, the sketches wouldn't have been completed, I wouldn't have been able to print my designs and I wouldn't have been able to construct models of the graphics. It is important to consider the life cycle of the materials one uses and where they came from, how they will be recycled or reused and where they finally end up. The life cycle of paper is the following:

Transported

Packaged

Making Paper

Usage

Extraction of Materials from the Earth Natural forests or plantations

Processing of Materials recycled paper is de-inked and re-pulped

Recycle or Throw out

Seeing as though I wanted to create minimal waste, all paper I discarded was thrown in the recycling bin rather than the regular bin. Having an understanding of the materials helps create less waste and reduce the environmental impact. 64

End of Use

Paper goes to landfill

e unction an est elm page analyses and critically evaluates the functional and aesthetic aspects of the design solution.

Ibis

..A111L.

More often than not, the function and aesthetic of a design relate to one another. My design solution is an example of this.

Function An obvious function of the design solution is the twist cap lid. Designed using 3D software, the twist cap lid twists perfectly into a cube shape and is secure. The lid needed to be secure due to the nature of the product inside (if it was to leak it would stain furniture). The cap was designed to be ergonomic and fit comfortable in any sized hands, to make it more marketable to everyone and increase sales. The twist cap is a unique design, using a break system and one single thread, this is an original concept and shows a level of innovation in the design. The twist cap was designed to be functional but also AESTHETIC, as it allows the cube shape to remain aesthetically pleasing when closed and opened. This is due to the short but wide design of the inner lid shape. This makes the product more appealing and marketable. Another function of the design solution is its ability to increase sales of Fudge Products. Outlined in the project proposal, marketing is everything, and the new design with its new AESTHETIC makes the product a lot more marketable to the public who are more likely to use this product. This was the initial point of the design and has been achieved through the aesthetic choice to incorporate current fashion trends on the design and add a femininity to it as well. A key function of the design solution is its ability to communicate the product to the public. The current design of Fudge Paintbox is too identical to a regular tube of paint, and can often be misinterpreted. The new product packaging has been designed to come in a tub, this was a preference of the target market and also adds the AESTHETIC of a hair dye. The more popular coloured hair dyes come in tubs, because they are easier to use and make less mess. Designing the product to include this feature allows it to be recognised as coloured dye more than the previous design.

Aesthetic The aesthetic of the design solution has been designed to market the current consumers of the product. The current design of the product is out-dated and since new trends have come about over the past few years, the old design has become obsolete. The aesthetic choices I have made have been directly connected to the research and observation of the target market and the current and ongoing trend 'Vintage The aesthetic plays a large role in the product's marketability as it is what makes the product unique from other coloured hair dye brands. The FUNCTION of the prodcut is related to its aesthetic as assessed above. Part of the aesthetic is the logo design. The brand logo has been changed to reinforce the change of their overall marketing. The logo has been designed to serve a particular FUNCTION, and that is to appeal to a more feminine target market and provoke a sense of originality. The logo is simple and versatile, which is an important marketing technique in getting your brand recognised. The inclusion of a simple shape allows it to be repeated in an aesthetically appealing way without seeming overbearing. Although it is simple, it also correlates with the current fashion trend "Vintage", making it appeal to the target market and also communicate a different attitude to potential buyers.

valuation

uccess of Design Solution This page directly responds to the Criteria for Success and feedback from target market and assesses the success of the design.

To assess whether or not the design solution was successful at meeting all criteria, I performed a group testing with the target market. The Results I asked a number of qualitative and quantitative questions in order to receive feedback from the target market on their thoughts of the aesthetic and functional aspects of the design solution. The target market was asked to answer to following questions by ranking how strongly (5) they agree or disagree (1).

Key .1

The new logo is feminine

The new logo is memorable

You prefer a tub over a tube

New packaging communicates what the product is

• 2 • 3 4 • 5

66

The design fits with current fashion trends

You would choose the new product over the old product

The qualitative data was given by a feedback box which featured on the bottom of the survey. Examples of the results are:

Would definitely stop and look at!

Love it! Looks like a sellable product!

Would keep packaging after use! So pretty!

This is really original

Would buy!!

I want to dye my hair now!!!

Looks much more professional

Haven't seen anything like this before, really lovely to look at and would purchase in store.

EVALUATIVE STATEMENT: These questions directly relate to the criteria to make the logo more feminine, memorable, fit with current fashion trends, communicate what the product is and the packaging design of a tub over a tube. The majority stated they strongly agree that the new logo is indeed feminine and memorable and a large portion of people agree that a tub is better than a tube. This means that I have achieved these parts of the critera and have successfully made the design solution appeal to the target market in these areas. Other parts of the Criteria for Success have been evaluated and assessed along the development of the design process and production and thus didn't need to be questioned again. The final question "You would choose the new product over the old product" was a unanimous `5; meaning in terms of rebranding the logo and the packaging, I have been successful in making it better and appeal to the target market. 67

Pro 'ect Evaluation

Impact on Individual This page is an exploration on how the design solution could impact the individual

All designs and products which are sold to the public have positive and negative effects on the individual, society and the environment. The Appropriateness of the design and ethics The appropriateness of the design is crucial in ensuring that the product is ethical and doesn't offend individuals. Throughout the process of designing my design solution I have ensured that I haven't added any new text to the product, this is because the current product has already taken into consideration the ethics of their text. Not changing the text is also important because it ensures that I keep all warning and ingredient information which is important in meeting the Australian Standards of Packaging. In terms of the imagery, I have not used any offensive images or used any copyrighted pictures, which means I have not devalued anyones property nor haven't offended anyone which thus means the appropriateness of the design impacts positively on the individual.

The Ergonomics and Human Interaction The individual is impacted through the ergonomics and human interaction with the product. The incorporation of the twist cap makes it easy to use. I have also designed the lid to fit most people's hands so more people are able to use it. The group testings proved that the design of the packaging is clear and the user is able to understand what is inside the packaging, this means that the human interaction is easy and clear. The aesthetic nature of the design solution is pleasing to the target market, as noted in the group testings done throughout the design process. This means that the user reacts and interacts with the product positively. This is also evident in the testimonial (qualitative data) obtained from the primary source of feedback in the last group testing.

The Consumer It is evident in the recent group testing that people are a lot more likely to purchase the new product over the old product. The design solution thus impacts the individual by causing a willingness to purchase. The positive impacts of this include the growth in happiness for the customer from making a new purchase of something they like, and the growth in prosperity for the company due to the increase in sales. This impacts the company's individuals positively with the added income. The consumer may also wish to keep the packaging for its aesthetic appearance. The tub design allows it to be rinsed and then reused for other goods, giving it the opportunity to impact the consumer positively for a long period of time. However, the negative impact includes the potential feeling of buying off impulse and not having cash. The use of the product is a big statement, as it will change your hair into an un-natural colour temporarily. This can impact the individuals negatively if they are at school or in the workforce where such elaborate apparel is not permitted or if they dislike the results. It can impact individuals positively however if they feel content and happy with the results of their new hair. 68

This page is an exploration on how the A-b-S- ign solution could impact society

Fashion Trends and Context The design solution impacts society positively through the incorporation of current fashion trends. In our current contemporary context, the new design of the packaging and logo provides fashionistas and people interested in hair styling a relatable product. The design solution could inspire members of society to follow current trends or inspire those who do to explore their interest further. In comparison to the old design, the new design related to our current context much more as it is more rlevant to current trends and styles.

Marketing The design solution opens up a lot of doors to new marketing opportunities for the brand, which in turn can impact society negatively or positively. The new design can cause a distinct seperation in society between who uses the product and who doesn't, who prefers one brand over another. This can cause psycho-social negative impacts and make people feel left out if they are unable to dye their hair a crazy colour. The marketing can cause new trends to start or reinvent the 'crazy colour hair' trend, causing people to follow or not follow the trend and thus, causing a divide. However, the marketing of the product may cause people who already have crazy colour hair to feel better about it. The marketing can also make other brands and products seem less appealling and thus will cause negative impacts on their businesses but positive impacts for Fudge.

mpact on is page is an exp oration on ow t e sesign solution could impact the environment

Creation of Obsolete Products The design solution is the rebranding of current products, thus, if the design solution was to be sold to the public, it would make all current and original designs obsolete and useless. This creates a negative impact on the environment as it introduces an enormous amount of waste and is harmful.

Production waste Throughout the production of the product, waste and gas emissions would be released in to the environment, which is a negative impact and causes much damage to surrounding natural habitats and the Earth's climate.

Design Process Throughout the design process I used a lot of technologies and created a lot of waste. I attempted to minimise waste by not 3D printing every test and trying to use scrap pieces of paper for my sketches, however I also managed to waste paper by having printer malfunctions and 3D printing tests failing. I also used a lot of electricity through the use of the 3D printer, as it approximately ran for 8 hours when printing the final packaging design and uses a lot of heat to generate and melt the plastic into the correct formation. 69
