General Information CONCERTS • Admission: A concert admission button serves as a pass to all Choral Festival concerts on Thursday, July 16; Friday, July 17; and Saturday, July 18. The three Preview Concerts on Wednesday, July 15, are free of charge and no button is required. Admission buttons are $15 per person at concert venues. Children 12 years and under are admitted free, when accompanied by a buttonwearing adult. Buttons are non-refundable and non-replaceable. • Arrive Early - No Seat Reservation: Advanced reservations for seating cannot be made for any Choral Festival concert or event. Concert venues will be open 30 minutes prior to start times. Audience members are encouraged to arrive early in order to find seating for their party. If there is no seating at a particular venue, keep in mind that it is possible that space may be available at a nearby alternate venue. Doors will open at 6:00 pm for the Festival Finale Concert on July 18 at the University of Montana Washington-Grizzly Stadium. • Concert Schedule Changes: Due to the number of international performers and the uncertainty of travel schedules, the concert schedule is subject to change at any time. Please consult the Festival website to confirm the concert schedule. • Chairs at Outdoor Venues - July 15: Since seating is limited at the popular Out to Lunch concerts at Caras Park on July 15, either arrive early or bring blankets or lawn chairs. Also, since no seating is provided at the Bonner Park concert on July 15, please bring lawn chairs. • Weather: There are no rain venues scheduled for outdoor concerts. Check the website for any last-minute updates. In Missoula, temperatures often drop dramatically in the evenings, so a sweater or jacket is a good idea for outdoor evening concerts. Please remember sunscreen, hats, sunglasses and bottled water at outdoor venues, particularly at the Finale Concert at the UM Stadium, where there is little shade. • Washington-Grizzly Stadium - Finale Concert - July 18: Entry is permitted only through the North and Northwest entrances on Campus Drive, with seating for audience members in the bleachers in the North End. Disability seating is in section 133, near the Northwest entrance. Sunscreen, hats, sunglasses and bottled water are strongly recommended at this concert. No one is permitted on the field other than performers and staff. Children must be attended at all times. No smoking or alcohol is permitted in the Stadium, and open umbrellas are prohibited in the bleacher seating areas. The UM concession stand will have snacks and beverages available.

Special Note Concerning Audience Disruptions: The International Choral Festival is a family event and all ages are welcome to attend. Keep in mind that choirs have rehearsed for many hours to deliver a high-quality performance, and activity from the audience not only distracts the singers, but also other concert-goers. Please avoid entering or leaving a concert that is in progress. Be aware that the lower seat can flip up noisily at the University Theater when the occupant stands to leave. Many Festival concerts are professionally recorded and audience noise and crying children can degrade the quality of the recording. If a child becomes disruptive, please accompany the child to the lobby or outdoors. Children 12 years and under are free of charge, but must be accompanied by an adult at Festival concerts. Smoking: Smoking is not permitted at any performance venue or event. Cough Drops: Cough drops are available from ushers at each venue. Recycling Program Books: Feel free to keep the Festival program book as a souvenir of the Festival, and for reference at concerts during Festival week. If you do not wish to keep it, please leave the program in the marked bin on a table near the door or in the lobby of the concert venue so that it can be recycled at a future concert. Photography and Recording Devices: The use of all audio and video recording devices, including cameras, is not permitted during indoor Festival performances except by authorized Choral Festival staff who will wear identification badges. Unauthorized users of such equipment will be asked to leave. Prizes and Awards: Although 150 choirs are screened and invited based on artistic merit through a rigorous audition process, the choirs do not compete with each other during the Festival, and do not receive prizes. The ICF is a non-competitive showcase Festival based on the idea of bringing people together to share in friendship and harmony. FESTIVAL HEADQUARTERS - MCT From July 13-19, the temporary headquarters for the Choral Festival will be located in the “green room” on the first floor of the Missoula Children's Theatre (200 Adams Street). Please enter through the lobby doors or the Adams Street entrance and follow the signs. During Festival week the Festival Headquarters telephone number (721-7985) will remain the same as the current Festival phone number. Continued on page 8

History of the Festival Although the first International Choral Festival was presented in 1987, Professor Donald Carey had the vision of a non-competitive choral festival in Missoula years before. Carey was conductor of The University of Montana Chamber Chorale in 1983 when the group performed at the Festival International de Chant Choral in Nancy, France. Two years later the Missoula Mendelssohn Club, a community men's chorus directed by Carey, toured Europe performing concerts in various countries. Inspired by the oldworld hospitality that the University Chorale and Mendelssohn Club enjoyed in France, Carey and the choristers envisioned Missoula hosting an international choral festival of its own. They set about inviting world-class choral groups to Missoula. After returning from Europe, organizers set a Festival date in July 1987, still not certain if the invited choirs would attend or if local audiences would support such an event. That summer everyone was elated when performing groups arrived from Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Latvia and Poland, as well as groups from Minnesota, Montana and South Dakota. The fledgling International Choral Festival attracted more than enough host families, contributors, volunteers and audience members. In fact, the organizers were surprised when concert halls overflowed with people, making it necessary to move the location of the Finale concert from a high school gymnasium to the largest venue at the University. It was obvious to all that the International Choral Festival was to continue. Three years later in 1989 the Festival became a non-profit organization overseen by a volunteer board of directors. That same year, in light of a changing geo-political world, it became clear that the International Choral Festival was much more than a high level musical event. The second Festival in July of 1990 helped bridge political boundaries when audiences were delighted by choirs from Denmark, Estonia, Italy, Japan, Lithuania, Scotland, Uruguay, Oregon and Montana. Celebrated entertainer Jester Harrison, known for his arrangements of Negro spirituals, was the special guest conductor at the Festival Finale Concert. In July of 1993 hundreds of volunteers were involved in fundraising, housing guests, selling merchandise, serving meals and managing concert venues. The countries represented that year included Austria, Botswana, Canada, the Czech Republic, Germany, the Netherlands, Puerto Rico, South Korea and Spain. Arizona, Montana, Oregon, and Wyoming represented the United States. A much-loved and anticipated Missoula tradition by 1996, the Festival attracted choirs from Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Hong Kong, South Korea, New Zealand, Poland, Singapore,Taiwan and Thailand. They were joined by choirs from Washington State

14

and Montana. Enthusiastic audiences once again packed the concert venues. “Music for the Millennium,” the 2000 Festival, was especially memorable. Due in large part to the diligence of the Festival co-chairs, the prestigious Cuban choir Coro Exaudi received visas to perform in the United States for the first time. The Kennedy Center and national choral organizations tried to secure visas for Exaudi, but were unsuccessful. The Cuban choir was joined by choirs from Austria, Botswana, China, Denmark and Spain in addition to the states of Georgia, Montana, Oregon and Washington. As part of the millennium celebration, the American Composers Forum awarded the 2000 Festival a grant for an original composition by composer and conductor William McGlaughlin of NPR's St. Paul Sunday. To conclude the Festival Finale Concert, McGlaughlin conducted the world premier of his “Walt Whitman's Dream,” featuring all of the Festival singers in the University's Adams Center. The momentum of the International Choral Festival continued to build in 2003, as choirs from Angola, Austria, Bulgaria, Canada, Colombia, Finland, Latvia, Malaysia, Peru, Slovakia, South Korea, Spain,Taiwan and the states of North Carolina, Oregon, Washington State and Montana thrilled audiences despite record-setting high temperatures. With the largest number of children's choirs to date, the Festival invited guest conductor Christine Jordanoff to lead the International Massed Youth and Children's Choir in a special youth concert. The seventh International Choral Festival in 2006 attracted a total estimated audience of some 30,000 people from all over the United States. Outstanding choirs from Australia, Czech Republic, Estonia, India, Slovenia, South Korea,Taiwan and Wales participated, with U.S. choirs from California, Kansas, Montana, North Dakota and Washington State. Diane Loomer, one of Canada's leading conductors and clinicians, was the guest conductor for the Finale Concert. Overflow concert venues and standing ovations were the norm at the 2006 Festival, which some say was the best ever. Much in the world has changed since the start of the Choral Festival over twenty years ago; however, its mission of promoting international friendship, understanding and goodwill through music remains as meaningful and appropriate as ever. The Choral Festival has gained a reputation world-wide for excellence and hospitality. Having evolved from its grassroots beginnings into a prestigious international event, Missoula's International Choral Festival continues to “bring the world a little closer” through song.

“Only a few things can touch a person’s heart more than a singing child. And only a few things make such a long-term impression on a child as singing in a choir. It opens the way to music and the arts for them, and cultivates their perception of life.” – Petr Eben, Composer, Czech Republic

GEORGIA

The Chanters Group of the Church of St. Panteleimon the Healer

The Chanters Group of the Church of St. Panteleimon the Healer of Tbilisi, Georgia, was founded in 1988. The founders, under the direction of Badri Jimsheleishvili, are a group of professional conductors who came together to research and perform the ancient chants and folk songs of the Georgian Orthodox Church. Since 1994 the membership has remained the same. The group of four “has a treasure trove of short and long tunes, at times approximating the power of an army chorus, and at other times sounding as sweet as a father's lullaby to his baby,” a reporter commented about their performance at a Canadian choral competition. According to a Norwich Cathedral of England publication,“The Chanters Group performed ancient chants…complete with their beautiful resonant harmonies and sonorous bass tones, that don't exist the same way in western church music.” In addition to performing extensively throughout Georgia, the group has also released four albums. The Chanters Group sang concerts in Israel and Taiwan in 2008 and performed at the World Choral Competition of Laval, Canada in 2007. They participated at the International Festival of Hajnowka, Poland (2005), and performed in Germany (2004), the Netherlands and Great Britain (2000, 2003). At a Festival in Belarus in 2009, they were named “Laureates of the Festival.”
