ANNUAL REPORT 2023

“Being able to share our music

VISION 2028 Access and Excellence

and art with that many people is really a gift that we were given.”

Dear Interlochen Family and Friends,

– Iris, MUKTI collaborator

Interlochen’s most valuable resource is our community. We draw together students, parents, alumni, faculty, staff, and supporters—anyone who shares our conviction that the arts make the world a better place. Thank you for being part of this community. Since our founding almost 100 years ago, Interlochen has grown, and each subsequent generation has benefited from—and built on—the vision, hard work, and generosity of those who came before. Together, we have a long history of setting audacious goals and achieving them. As we look ahead to our second century, we’re excited to honor Interlochen’s legacy with bold new goals and a deepening commitment to Excellence and Access. While the pursuit of Excellence is a founding principle of Interlochen, we will continue to raise the bar on arts education by connecting our students with world-class artists, educators, and experiences. This past year, we welcomed more than 150 guest artists to our campus, including New York Times best-selling author Ross Gay; Melanie Person, co-director of the Ailey School in New York; and Nathalie Doucet, Head of Music and Director of Detroit Opera House.

“You are helping us create exceptional opportunities for young artists worldwide.” Trey Devey

By ensuring Access, we can provide the scholarship support needed to eliminate barriers that can stand in the way of an Interlochen experience for young artists. That’s why we have set an ambitious goal to meet the full demonstrated financial need of every admitted aspiring artist by our 100th year in 2028. Our yearlong partnership with the New York Philharmonic illustrates where we are headed as an organization. We were able to provide life-changing experiences to our current students while also opening our doors by offering 30 full Camp scholarships to talented artists from the New York City area. In our first 95 years, Interlochen has built a remarkable home for the arts and a vibrant community that spans the globe. Our success is based on many factors, including the generosity and vision of our donors who believe in our mission. Thank you to all of our supporters this year. You are helping us create exceptional opportunities for young artists worldwide. With gratitude,

Hundreds of Interlochen supporters viewed our Visual Arts Exhibition and mingled following the MUKTI performance in David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center.

2023 HIGHLIGHTS Forging Partnerships and Understanding

NYC PARTNERSHIPS

On March 3 at Lincoln Center in New York City, 131 Interlochen students from every arts discipline premiered MUKTI: A Movement of Liberation to a sold-out audience at David Geffen Hall. The interdisciplinary performance was the culmination of months of hard work by students and faculty, in collaboration with the New York Philharmonic. MUKTI featured students’ original songs, poetry, spoken word, dance, and film. Based on the Hindi word for “liberation,” the multifaceted program explored issues of social justice and equity from the many perspectives and talents of Interlochen’s diverse student body. The Arts Academy Orchestra took the stage for the performance’s second half, alongside 16 musicians from the New York Philharmonic, 11 of whom are Interlochen alumni. Together, they performed the works of four prominent Black composers: "Umoja" by Valerie Coleman; "Equality" by Jonathan Bailey Holland (IAC/NMC 89, IAA 88-92); "Soul of Remembrance" by Mary Watkins; and "Unburied, Unmourned, Unmarked: Requiem for Rice" by John Wineglass. All four composers were present in the audience. In the months before the performance, Interlochen faculty and staff built ties with leading youth arts organizations in the New York City area. As part of their New York tour, students attended classes, rehearsals, and performances at these partner organizations. On the evening of March 4, students from those organizations came together for a special concert at the Kaufman Music Center.

On Saturday, March 4, Interlochen students and faculty attended a culminating performance by students from our partner organizations at the Kaufman Music Center’s Merkin Hall.

On Tuesday, Feb. 28, our singer-songwriters performed select works at Rockwood Music Hall, and our jazz students began rehearsing with students from the Afro Latin Jazz Alliance and Harlem School of the Arts for a culminating, collaborative performance on Wednesday, March 1, at Dizzy’s Club at Lincoln Center.

Students in various classes complemented their classroom work with trips to the Archangel Tree Archive, the Michigan Youth in Government Conferences in Lansing, and the Model UN Conference at the University of Michigan. Environmental Science students took to the water aboard a 77-foot schooner as part of their studies with the Inland Seas Education Association in Suttons Bay, Michigan.

Students in the Creative Writing Division worked with many outstanding visiting writers including New York Times best-selling author Ross Gay. The poet, essayist, and author of The Book of Delights worked with creative writing students in one-on-one tutorials, taught a master class, and delighted the entire student body in a Community Meeting.

New York City-based interdisciplinary artist, choreographer, director, and filmmaker Michael Spencer Phillips worked with and performed alongside students. Students also participated in the MUKTI project and met with one of the founders of the Blue Man Group.

Award-winning composer Dr. Bill Banfield visited campus in preparation for a spring 2024 staged premiere of the opera Edmonia. Originally commissioned in 2000 by Pulitzer and Nobel Prize-winning author Toni Morrison, the opera celebrates Edmonia Lewis (1844-1907), the acclaimed Black and Native American 19th-century sculptor.

Fundraising Report THE IMPACT OF YOUR SUPPORT

Dear Interlochen Supporters, Creative projects flourished at Interlochen this year. Among the countless examples is a new gift that enables Academy students to collaborate on a feature-length documentary that explores the science of regenerative agriculture. The first time we sat down with the Greenacres Foundation staff, you could feel the excitement and creative energy as our faculty and the foundation staff explored possibilities of collaboration. As we look ahead to the coming two academic years, those plans will become reality. At Interlochen, our students, faculty, and staff have the passion, resources, and skills to turn a creative spark into a work of art, a performance, or a poem that can change lives—and the world.

And, your gifts to the Interlochen Annual Fund, Interlochen Public Radio, and to a broad range of endowed funds result in permanent investments including new faculty positions, touring opportunities, and the wellness of our students. We share your conviction that the arts can change lives and are honored by your trust and confidence in our community to turn inspiration into reality. As always, we invite you to come see a play, concert, exhibition opening, or any student event—because the most compelling reason to support the arts is to experience this change for yourself. THE FORMATIVE EXPERIENCE Investing in Excellence

A Bright Future for the French Horn Program

“It felt like heaven to me,” said Linda VanSickle Smith (IAC/NMC 57-60), recalling her first impression of Camp in 1956. Linda spent four summers at Interlochen and still vividly recalls the specific moment that sent her in a new direction. The story of Interlochen’s first 95 years is one of steady growth and improvement. From the construction of the Interlochen Bowl amphitheater on Green Lake in 1928 to the present, we have consistently added the people, places, and resources to provide life-changing opportunities for young artists. Endowment gifts secure our hard-earned progress by ensuring the permanence of the programs which foster our creative excellence and open opportunities: faculty positions; visiting artists; scholarships; diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts; touring opportunities; and more.

After Linda performed in Howard Hanson’s Symphony No. 2, with its soaring French horn solo, the composer himself walked to the stage and invited Linda to stand for applause. Shortly thereafter, Hanson offered Linda a full scholarship to attend the Eastman School of Music, where he was the director. Linda graduated from Eastman and enjoyed a successful music career before deciding to pursue a career in social work in the Dallas area. After retiring, Linda dove back into the music world, serving on boards and creating scholarship opportunities for young musicians to attend Interlochen. This year, Linda made a generous gift to establish the Linda VanSickle Smith French Horn Chair which will ensure future generations continue to have access to world-class instruction. This year-round position includes Camp and Academy programming and and raises the visibility of Interlochen’s French Horn program. Linda also provided ongoing support to the Linda VanSickle Smith Annual Scholarship in French Horn, which is awarded to an Orchestral Scholar as well as to additional campers in French horn.

“I’m so excited about this opportunity to work with Interlochen’s amazing French horn students. Linda’s generous gift will allow the next generation of young horn artists to thrive in this unique place.” — Dr. Lauren Hunt, Linda VanSickle Smith French Horn Chair and Director of Brass Studies

THE FORMATIVE EXPERIENCE Investing in Excellence

Kearns Family Counseling Endowment Supports Mental Health Services As a crisis counselor in a public high school, Lisa Kearns understands the mental health challenges facing adolescents today better than most. So when Lisa and her husband Andrew’s daughter Charlotte (IAA 18-22; IAC 15-17, 20; IAC St 21-23) made the momentous decision to study theatre at Interlochen Arts Academy— 2,000 miles away from home—Lisa and Andrew encouraged their daughter to take advantage of counseling services if she ever needed them. “We were really comforted by the fact that Interlochen made mental health support a priority from the beginning,” said Lisa. “They were phenomenal and made a huge difference for Charlotte, especially during the stressful college application process.” In appreciation for the support Charlotte received, and recognizing the universal need for greater investment in mental health services, Andrew and Lisa established the Kearns Family Counseling Endowment to ensure that mental health services are always available when Academy students need them. “We are lucky to be in a position to give back to Interlochen,” said Andrew. “When we talked with Interlochen, we learned that there was a real need for additional staff to support Interlochen students as they deal with some of the unique pressures and stresses that they face as artists. Putting additional resources in place—permanently—was a way that we could live out our values.”

“We aspire to enhance the well-being of young artists. We want to help them build a sense of self-assurance and comfort within their developing bodies and brains. The ultimate gratification lies in knowing that we have played a role in facilitating a smoother life journey.”

Greenacres Foundation Inspires Student Documentary The world needs artists, storytellers, and scientists to help inform and inspire our communities to tackle the pressing issues facing us today. Interlochen students are ideally situated to meet this need. Thanks to a partnership with the Greenacres Foundation, they can do so. The Cincinnati-based nonprofit and research institution has engaged with Interlochen to produce a feature documentary on regenerative agriculture, an approach to farming that is more in harmony with nature and beneficial to our changing climate. The project will involve all students from the Film & New Media Division as well as interested students from other majors. A new elective course on regenerative agriculture will help students understand the science behind this sustainable approach to meeting our most basic needs. With support of a generous grant from Greenacres, three faculty have been hired to deepen the skills of students to create the film. Students will begin planning and filming in the 2023-24 academic year and complete the project in 2024-25. The completed documentary will be shown at Interlochen and the Greenacres Foundation, and will be entered in film festivals.

“It is great to have a partner to bring to life the research we’ve done. Partnering with Interlochen Center for the Arts will allow us to reach a wider audience and bring attention to the importance of regenerative agriculture through impactful storytelling.” – Carter Randolph, Greenacres President and Chairman of the Board

YOUNG ARTIST DESTINATION Increasing Access

Inspiring Growth of Young and Older Students Joanne Grabinski (ICCA 12, 15-20, 22, 23) was already a prolific writer and published author when she first attended a writing retreat at Interlochen. As a professor of gerontology, she regularly published articles and research, and authored a popular book on the topic of career paths in the field. As she prepared to step away from her role at Eastern Michigan University, her search for a creative outlet led her to Interlochen.

Interlochen is a home for the arts that provides the space, opportunities, and resources that enable students to strive and reach their potential. It is the students themselves, however, who bring the creative spark. Each student at Interlochen benefits from the talent and creativity of their peers. Our arts community thrives when we can seek out and find the most talented and motivated artists, regardless of their ability to pay the cost of an Interlochen experience. That’s a primary reason to raise the funds necessary to meet 100% of the demonstrated financial need of every admitted student by 2028.

“It is an interesting challenge to transition from being an academic writer to a creative writer. Interlochen’s Writer’s Retreat gave me encouragement and support and a network of writers, some of whom have become very good friends,” Joanne said. Joanne had always valued growth—in others and herself. Her experiences in the writing program inspired her to share these opportunities with others and establish the Anne-Marie Oomen and Katey Schultz ICCA Creative Writing Scholarship to support adult learners at the Writers Retreat.

Opening Opportunities for Rural Artists Artistic talent can come from anywhere. Aspiring artists from underserved rural areas can often face a unique set of obstacles, including fewer opportunities for advanced study, difficulty finding a peer group that shares their interests, and sometimes, the inability to afford an Interlochen Arts Camp experience. With the generous support of The Hearst Foundations, Interlochen has established a three-year program to seek out and provide targeted financial aid to young artists in rural communities across the United States. In the program’s first year, 18 students from eight different states received scholarship support totaling $50,000. They came from communities such as: Ponderay, Idaho (population 1,137); Winchester, Kansas (population 551); Electra, Texas (population 2,791); Weathersfield, Texas (population 2,842); and Hessel/Clark Township, Michigan (population 2,256).

“I was amazed to see the opportunities that young writers have at the Arts Academy. It is a remarkable experience to have that kind of a support community and writing mentors at such a young age.”

Inspired to do even more at Interlochen, Joanne established a new scholarship for Academy students this year. The C. Joanne Grabinski Endowed Academy Scholarship in Creative Writing is a permanent investment to ensure that young writers have an opportunity to learn their craft. In addition to her endowment, Joanne is augmenting her scholarship with an annual gift to the current use fund associated with the scholarship endowment.

– Joanne Grabinski (ICCA 12, 15-20, 22, 23)

“I have really enjoyed Camp. The teachers, peers, and community have given me so much more inspiration to pursue the violin as a career. This has been a very long and intense experience, but in the end improvements in me as a person and artist have been made. Camp holds a special place in my heart. I will cherish every single moment and take the lessons learned and use them in my future, from everyday living to being a musician.” – Hadassah, High School, Violin 18

Honoring the Teacher with Sand on his Knees Generations of Interlochen alumni credit their Camp or Academy experience with sparking a lifetime love of the arts. Thanks to Lyman Williams, thousands of former campers also carry a lifelong love for the natural environment of northern Michigan. From 1973 to 2010, Lyman taught environmental science classes to Intermediate campers, taking them on guided explorations of Interlochen’s woods, streams, lakes, and wildlife. Drawing on his experience as a geology professor, Lyman and his students could often be found on the ground, exploring every minute detail of the wooded environment with his students. He became known to many as the “teacher with sand on his knees.” For Joan Williams (IAC/NMC 59, UNIV 61-62), it seemed natural to honor her husband’s memory and his 37 years of work with Intermediate campers by making it possible for future Intermediate campers to have an Interlochen experience.

With generous support from an anonymous donor, Interlochen has launched a three-year strategic initiative to build student and faculty representation from Indigenous communities. The effort includes scholarships, faculty recruitment, and support for regional efforts to educate the larger northern Michigan community about Indigenous history, culture, and perspectives. Combined with other sources of merit-based aid, Interlochen was able to extend scholarships to ten highly qualified young Indigenous artists from four different states in the 2023 Camp season. Interlochen also welcomed visiting scholar Eric Hemenway to campus. An Anishnaabe/Odawa from Cross Village, Eric taught an Indigenous history class at the Academy and has worked with campers at the Walter Hastings Museum to add essential perspectives about the long history of the people and places of northern Michigan. In addition, Hemenway has engaged with the faculty and staff of Interlochen to seek out opportunities to deepen our relationships with local Indigenous communities.

• 1st Place in Collaborative Effort for "Kids in Crisis", by IPR’s Michael Livingston and Elizabeth Brewer of the Traverse City Record-Eagle

Interlochen Public Radio has defied national trends by maintaining and enhancing the quality that IPR listeners expect. At a time when local journalism is in decline around the country, IPR News remains a vital source of local information that has earned national recognition. This year, IPR reporters were recognized with five Edward R. Murrow Awards and four awards from the Public Media Journalists Association. The high-quality reporting at IPR not only connects listeners to the world, it connects them to their own communities, empowering them to be more informed about and involved in the issues that affect their families, friends, and neighbors. IPR Music extends our mission to educate and inspire by connecting our listeners with classical music, curated by knowledgeable and insightful IPR staff. Through programs like Kids Commute and Gameplay, we’re also inspiring and welcoming new generations to enjoy classical music. Last year, more than 4,000 people expressed their appreciation for IPR’s work by making a gift to support their continued efforts. These gifts allow IPR to continue the work of keeping our communities informed and inspired.

A short vacation to Leelanau County, with its farms, rolling hills, and scenic dunes, convinced Max and Linda Proffitt that they wanted to return to northern Michigan someday—and tuning their radio to IPR assured them that they could call northern Michigan home. “For a station in a relatively small market, the quality of the work that they do stacks up to even the largest stations,” said Max. “They really strike the right balance between keeping us informed about national and global news while also providing local coverage that helps us get to know our own community better.” Since relocating to northern Michigan, Linda and Max have committed themselves to learning about and protecting the natural beauty that brought them to the region in the first place. “We care very deeply about science and the environment, and that’s why we have given to the science and environment desk at IPR,” noted Max. In addition to supporting IPR through their gifts, Linda also volunteers during IPR fundraising drives.

$405,000 23% Classical music has always been a part of life for John and Sue Paul, who met in high school while performing in a pit orchestra. When they are driving the roads of northern Michigan together, or when John is carving in his workshop, Classical IPR is a reliable source of music and inspiration.

Supporting the Uniqueness of Interlochen Interlochen supporter Adam Sztykiel never attended Interlochen as a student. He does, however, remember his first time on campus.

At Interlochen, we celebrate and savor those moments when our students share their work with the world— those moments of accomplishment and applause. We also embrace the real work between performances. The Annual Fund supports both. It allows us to welcome talented students from all economic backgrounds and maintain the practice rooms, studios, and classrooms where students refine their craft. The Annual Fund also enables us to attract and retain the dedicated and skilled teachers who help each student reach their potential, and bring in guest artists to teach and inspire our artists to continue their growth.

In the summer after his freshman year at the University of Southern California, Adam decided to make the drive from Detroit to see a friend who was performing in Our Town at Arts Camp. “At the performance, I remember it hitting me and thinking, ‘This is so far beyond any other high school performance I have ever seen.’ It was so extraordinary and moving. So even at age 19, I just looked around and knew that Interlochen was a really special place.”

Many years later, when Adam and his wife Ellie Knaus were deciding where to live, they chose Traverse City because it combined their shared love of northern Michigan and the performing arts. Their oldest daughter attended Arts Camp in 2022 and enthusiastically returned in 2023.

Act for Art 2023 In three exciting days, 112 volunteers joined our third annual crowdfunding effort to generate support for Interlochen’s artists through social media, online testimonials, and peer-to-peer fundraising. Together, we raised $207,597.80 from 488 donors to support scholarships.

“I don’t take Interlochen for granted. Interlochen can only exist because it has such a profound system of support from alumni, and donors like me who understand how unique and important this place is. Now that I know what happens at Interlochen, I want to make sure that it continues so that when my kids grow up, they’re going to be able to send their kids here and have their own amazing experiences, too.” – Adam Sztykiel, Arts Camp Parent

THE HERITAGE SOCIETY

The Heritage Society recognizes donors who have honored Interlochen with commitments to support Interlochen in their estates. Through wills, charitable gift annuities, charitable annuity trusts, charitable remainder unitrusts, lead trusts, gifts of insurance, retirement plans, or other arrangements, Heritage Society members make provisions today that will benefit Interlochen by providing opportunities for the creative changemakers of tomorrow. For more information about becoming a Heritage Society member, please contact Kathleen Kasdorf, Director of Planned Giving, at 231.276.7637 or kathleen.kasdorf@interlochen.org.

“Understanding that the arts really are a universal language that transcends cultures and generations, the leadership and faculty at Interlochen work to inspire all students, regardless of their future professions with the magic and creativity of the arts. I am grateful to be part of the experience, which is why I designated Interlochen as a beneficiary of my estate. Making this gift will keep the magic of Interlochen alive for future generations.”

– Ron Stowe, Trustee Emeritus, Arts Camp/Arts Academy Parent (IAC/NMC 55-62, IAA 62-63, IAA St 64, 66)

Helen Grinnell had fond memories of listening to the sound of orchestra music come through the trees— from a distance. She was enrolled in Camp Interlochen for Girls, an entirely different camp that coexisted with Interlochen before being bought by Interlochen President Joe Maddy in the 1940s. Grinnell had many connections to “the camp across the street.” Her grandfather owned Grinnell Brothers Piano in Detroit, and her father was a close friend and supporter of Dr. Maddy—he once helped Maddy ship an organ from Detroit over unpaved country roads to campus. Helen went on to find success in business and sports, winning the Women’s Club Championship at the Detroit Golf Club 12 times. She also was an avid nature photographer. Throughout her life, Helen was a supporter of Camp and later, the Academy. Her planned gift created two new endowed scholarships that will allow future generations of students to experience the arts: the Helen Grinnell Camp Scholarship and the Helen Grinnell Academy Scholarship. 44

VOLUNTEERS GIVE THE GIFT OF TIME

Among our hundreds of dedicated volunteers each year are the members of the Student Philanthropy Team, pictured here. From bottom, left to right: Darrian, Luna, Benjamin, Alejandro, Noah, Michelle, Grace, Lindsey, Kaya, and Jasmine. Not pictured: Sadie, MK, Philip, Ana, Owen, and Eliza.

From the thousands of flowers planted across campus to the warm greeting you get when you arrive to see a performance, the volunteer community at Interlochen is an integral part of the Interlochen experience. On campus, you can find Green Vest volunteers ushering at performances, and other dedicated volunteers sewing costumes, answering phones at IPR fundraising drives, and helping in myriad ways on campus. Our Campus Philanthropy Ambassadors, composed of faculty and staff, along with our Student Philanthropy Team, are also active partners in fundraising and stewardship efforts.
