The Angiograph Projector is an example of the use of this technique to help diagnose eye conditions and the surgeon to operate on sensitive areas of the eye. High precision liquid level sensors intended for software controlled fuel storage systems are produced and have been awarded BASEEFA certification for use in hazardous areas. Special devices for telephone revenue apportionment have been developed and can be adapted for a variety of applications by internal software carried on PROM. Senior appointment at BEITA Geoffrey Miller has been promoted to Technical Director of the Business Equipment & Information Technology Association (BEITA). Geoff has been involved with standards and technical work for over 40 years. Before joining BEITA as Technical Secretary in 1977, he spent 8 years with the British Standards Institution and prior to that, 22 years with Smiths Industries Ltd, the last 10 of which he held the post of Chief Draughtsman of one of the company’s divisions. During his service with BEITA, Geoff has been involved in major contributions to nearly 100 standards, which have been of direct benefit to the industry. Two, in particular, need specific mention. The first, on the subject of “Safety of information technology equipment, including electrical business equipment” is now published internationally. It runs to over 120 pages and took 5 years to complete. The second is the series of standards, relating to all aspects of office furniture which has been a continuing exercise for over 20 years. Without doubt, standards and technical work is one of the most important services provided to members by the Association. This is clearly illustrated by the fact that over 20 BEITA committees, most of which are guided by Geoff, are currently considering standards which are likely to affect the industry. When appropriate, the committees also engage in other activities for example producing publications such as the highly successful “Introducing VDUs to the Office” and “Wiring in Desks” , an interim code of practice which became a British Standard. At the start of his career, he worked on an early design of the GPO telephone coinbox mechanism used not only in this country but, after adaption by Geoff, in many overseas territories, including most of the Commonwealth. In some countries they are still in use to this day. In his spare time, Geoff is a keen modern sequence dancer and photographer. Changes in Future Exhibitions After four years, the agreement between B .E .D . Exhibitions and BEITA which resulted in jointly organised events such as LBES has come to an end. On 27th February BEITA announced that AGB Exhibitions Ltd. had been appointed to manage all its future exhibitions, and this arrangement becomes effective on 1st July. Office ‘87, scheduled for 2-5 June at Olympia 2, is not affected by these new plans and will be the last show jointly organised by B.E.D. and BEITA. International Business Show for London The International Business Show (IBS) previously held biennially at the National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham from 1977 to 1985 is being re-introduced in London and will be held at Earls Court in October 1988. The IBS rapidly grew to become Britain’s premier office equipment exhibition, and the move to London is a response to the wishes of many of the show’s long-term supporters. To be organised by AGB Exhibitions, and sponsored by BEITA, the Business Equipment and Information Technology Association, the London based IBS will better serve the interests of the majority of business in the UK whose headquarters are situated in London and the South East, and will benefit from the excellent national and international communications to the capital. Welcoming the move to Earls Court, Mr. Richard Palmer, Director General and Chief Executive of BEITA said, “IBS became the largest and most comprehensive exhibition of business equipment in the country and was respected internationally as Britain's shop-window for the industry. Whilst accepting the value of the smaller and more specialised events, many companies, including market leaders, remain convinced that a major comprehensive and authoritative exhibition is required both by suppliers and end-users alike. BEITA, representing the manufacturing and supplier capability in the UK, strongly supports the move of IBS to Earls Court.” Plans are now being formulated to introduce a number of innovations at the International Business Show, which will be held from Monday 24 to Friday 28 October 1988 (with late night opening on Wednesday 26 October).
