CRACK-OPENING DISPLACEMENT (COD) GAUGES
COD gauges are designed for use with the range of fracture mechanics testing accessories developed by Instron® and suitable for use with all Instron systems. They provide for testing a wide range of specimens, including compact tension (CT) and bend specimens. The COD gauges can be used for both crack propagation and fracture toughness types of test.
Principle of Operation
The COD gauge gives a precise indication of the relative displacement of two accurately located knife-edges, which span the starter notch of the specimen. These lightweight gauges are self-supporting during testing, and self-release on specimen failure. The rugged casing provides protection from mechanical damage.
Application Range
• Fracture mechanics testing to a range of International standards
2670 SERIES COD GAUGES
These general-purpose deflection measurement devices are based on LVDT transducers. A range of travel is available to suit a wide range of applications.

Principle of Operation
Each transducer has a fixed body with a moving core. The moving core is spring loaded and features a ball tip or threaded rod. The body of the deflectometer is fixed to a stationary part of the test system, and the moving tip is located against the area of interest. Any movement of the area of interest is transferred to the moving tip and hence to the transducer, resulting in a signal that is proportional to the deflection.
Application Range
• General purpose deflection measurement of components, structures, and devices
