TO MOTIVATE. THE BIG UNKNOWN I have always considered that one of the most difficult aspects for a teacher to address is intrinsic motivation, that tireless quest to get students interested in developing their own learning. Although today we have more striking and interesting resources to capture their attention, there are always disturbing elements that come to distract students from what is truly important. We must take into account the centers of interest that our students have, in order to be able to work on the contents by bringing them as close as possible. It is essential to work in the zone of proximal development so that learning is significant and motivating since we cannot remain in the mere repetition of content and anchored to textbooks, considering them as a panacea.

Every time we find students with critical thinking more deeply rooted in their way of considering what, why, why and how they learn. They usually ask us the eternal question “what is this for?”, which is so difficult for us to answer with determination, so we must be clear that meaningful learning must be based on carrying out projects, managing textbooks, consultation and selection of the information to which we access on the web, carrying out motivating and productive activities for the development of said learning.

There will always be someone who is against some of the ways that students have to learn, so it is clear that teachers and professors must be companions of the learners. The learning of a student should never depend on the professor or teacher who gives class during a certain period, but the teacher has to be flexible to adapt to the rhythm and Regarding the compatibility of the the particularity of each of his use of technology and the develop- students. ment of passion for other activities such as reading a book, a conversa- In relation to how a student can be tion with friends, listening to music, motivated, we must consider that painting, walking in the countryside, the professor or teacher is one more etc. It is essential to make them wheel of that gear that is learning. understand that the sum of many We will always find some who bring elements will enrich their knowledge the motivation from other reasons, like and their being.

fear of failure, demands of the family environment, own interests, level of maturity, pleasure in learning. A good teacher must and must promote and ensure that this intrinsic motivation is not lost, but today it is still a great challenge to awaken this motivation in students who are not interested in learning. Even so, teachers continue to struggle in each of the learning situations to motivate. And of course, we will never give up no matter how high the mountain we have to climb.

GENERAL NEWS SOLIDARY RUN UNICEF WITH UKRAINE As is already a tradition in our School, during the day on April 7 (the last one before the Easter holidays), the Primary and E.S.O. have been able to participate in the Solidarity Race, which on this occasion, as in previous years, will collaborate with UNICEF, and more specifically, with the work that this organization is carrying out to help the children of Ukraine who are suffering the consequences of the war in his country. Throughout the day, the different courses have been able to participate, accompanied by their teachers giving visibility to this great problem, showing their support for those who are suffering the most, and involving everyone around them in their great spirit of solidarity. In addition to the course itself, the students have been able to collaborate by contributing the symbolic amount of 1 euro, which each tutor has been collecting in the different groups, and which, once pooled, will go to the UNICEF organization, since we are a UNICEF Friend School and Reference Center for Education in Children's Rights and Global Citizenship, and with that money, the organization will be able to help Ukrainian children who need it so much these days. For all this, and after the resounding success of both fundraising and student involvement, we can only show our gratitude to all of you who have helped make this initiative a success: Congratulations to all the students, families and teachers, and thank you all very much for your effort and collaboration!!! DREAMS A TALE BY OLIVIA FIORE

Everyone has dreams, they can be the ones you are passionate about or the ones that make you get up at 00:00 at night... Sofia, she was a nice girl, everyone was her friend, but what Sofia was most passionate about was astrology, in short, she liked the stars. She wanted to travel to space and name a star after her name... -If I went to outer space and found a new star, I would call it by my name, Sofia... it's a nice name, and besides, who would care if I added a little star? Sofia wondered, she always did that same thing question to which he had no answer. On Monday morning, they went on a field trip to a fantastic place: the planetarium. -I didn't know that there were sets of stars called "constellations"-she told the astrologer that she was at the exit -Come tonight, I'll tell you a secret- she told Sofia, and as expected, Sofia showed up there at night. -Come this way, I want you to see something- said the astrologer with a cheeky face. Sofia followed the astrologer and asked: "Is there a long way to go?" Sofia complained. "No," she said between giggles. The astrologer lifted a blanket that covered something, the bad thing is, it was full of dust... -Wow!, a special spaceship- Sofia joked - do you want to ride? - asked the astrologer. "Of course," Sofia answered enthusiastically, so the two of them got on the dusty ship ready to explore the universe. But in the middle of the trip they found a barrier of meteorites, -or not, METEORITES!!- the astrologer shouted in panic -is that bad!? - asked Sofia who had not the slightest idea of what were those gigantic rocks -YES, AND A LOT, WE COULD END UP BEING MASHED!!!- shouted the astrologer, pulling Sofia out of her reverie with the stars that were around her. They were dodging rocks and boulders for a long time, until they got out of there. Sophia realized that they had passed through Saturn, which was in a bad mood today and was shooting ring fragments at her. And right there Sofia saw her, the star of her dreams, -that is, the star I was looking for. "Does he still have a name?" she asked excitedly. "Well, look where you are, no, it doesn't have a name, what name are you going to give it?" the astrologer asked Sofia. And Sofia understood that after her dreams were fulfilled she called her:... dreams

ESO AND BACCALAUREATE NEWS I MATHEMATICAL MEETING: MATHEMATICS IN THE ENVIRONMENT OF THE INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE On April 1, we had the opportunity to share with students and teachers from the San Patricio and Kensington schools, educational centers of the Inspired group, the I Mathematical Meeting. Among the students Susana Ye, Mateo González, Samuel Caraballo and Hugo Labella of the second year group A of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program, we prepared a presentation about our monographs in Mathematics, what led us to do them and our development process. During the presentation we answered doubts from both the San Patricio students and the Mathematics teacher from Kensington College about our experience with the monographs in this area of knowledge. We believe that it was a very enriching meeting where the students were very involved with our presentation. In addition, we were able to share our interest in mathematics while meeting very nice students from Colegio San Patricio and showing them our educational center. Susana Ye, Mateo González, Samuel Caraballo and Hugo Labella, second-year students of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program

ESO AND BACCALAUREATE NEWS WINNERS OF THE FINAL TOURNAMENT OF THE VI PRE-UNIVERSITY DEBATE LEAGUE CICAE – UCJC IN SPANISH 350 students from 33 schools debated whether “Should NATO have brought Ukraine into membership in January 2022, when the conflict with Russia was starting to escalate?” in the grand finale of the VI CICAE – UCJC Pre-University Debate League, organized by the Association of Private and Independent Schools (CICAE) and the Camilo José Cela University (UCJC), held on March 25 and 26. The students, who are in 3rd year of ESO to 2nd year of Baccalaureate, have prepared their lines of argument for almost two months, both for and against, because until seconds before each tournament they do not know from which point of view they will have to position themselves, in order to stimulate their critical thinking and respect for the opponent's ideas. The previous documentation work has allowed them to analyze possible consequences at a human, political and economic level, as well as to become even more sensitive to the Ukrainian crisis. At the opening of the competition, held at the Camilo José Cela University, Rubén Amón, ambassador of the tournament, intervened and wanted to support the students on their way to being great debaters. The journalist offered those present his vision of the situation in Ukraine and the complex position of NATO, in order to serve them for one last reflection before facing the debates. The six teams from Mirabal, three from Spanish and three from English, participated in this final by qualifying in the previous tournaments. One of the Mirabal teams got the victory in Spanish. Congratulations!

SPORTS SCHOOL CROSS CHAMPIONSHIP Yesterday, April 5, the Community of Madrid School Cross Championship took place, which was held at the facilities of the Dehesa de Navalcarbón, in Las Rozas, as well as in the surrounding forest area. We were able to attend this competition with a small representation of our School, since the number of people who can attend is limited to 6 participants per category, and it was attended by more than 80 schools from the entire Community of Madrid. Despite the weather forecast, the different races could be carried out according to the planned schedule, and although it was cold, which made it particularly difficult for the athletes to achieve great times, a spectacular level of Athletics of the Community of Madrid could be seen, and more specifically of our athletes. In fact, one of them, Luca Fuentes, from 6th grade, won the Bronze medal in the Male Junior Category (among 360 runners in his category, selected by each school), in which they ran a distance of 1,000 m. cross-country, but fighting to the finish line to win. As always, the success of those who were, also gives value to the work of all his teammates to prepare for this type of competition, and that raises the level of the group. Congratulations to all the athletes who participated, both for their work and for the attitude they showed during the day, and we are sure that they will continue to be successful.

SPORTS CHEERLEADER

Last Saturday, April 2, our Lion's Cheers attended the cheerleading competition that took place at the American School in Madrid, where they won a well-deserved third prize in their category. It was a fabulous experience for the students to share their hobby with other schools and clubs that practice the same sport, and to see the progression that can be achieved in the world of cheers. Congratulations to our Mirabal students for their great work, which was appreciated in their choreography, jumps, gymnastics and their lifts, which we know have required a lot of training to come up with a perfect choreography routine for their competition. Keep working like this...Lion´s cheers!!!

NOTICIAS INSPIRED MUSIC The transverse flute was one of the leading instruments in our recent educational concert for 2nd grade students. Here is a brief story written by a student who learned to play this wonderful instrument at our school. The transverse flute is a wind musical instrument, therefore family of aerophones. Although it is made of metal, it is considered within the family of woodwind instruments, since it was formerly made of that material. It has always been one of the most admired instruments. It is played by covering the holes or the keys with the fingers to achieve the different notes. While the hands carry out the technical and precise work, the most important thing is to know how to use the diaphragm well so that the air that is introduced when blowing makes the components of the flute vibrate correctly. The flutist must learn to manage the diaphragm to be able to make nuances, play forte or piano and make crescendos and diminuendos. Vibrato is also done knowing how to use the diaphragm, making it oscillate with great skill. It is said that this muscle is what makes the flute "sing", and so that it can "speak" the tongue is used. The language must also be very well trained since with it the sounds are articulated, that is, they are separated from each other.

www.colegiomirabal.com

Therefore, to achieve masterful playing, fingers, tongue, and diaphragm must be used simultaneously, with incredible precision and speed. The viola is one of the members of the family of bowed strings that can be studied in our center. The French composer Héctor Berlioz dedicated to the great violinist Niccolò Paganini one of the best known works that have been composed for viola: "Harold in Italy" a work written in four movements where the viola is the protagonist representing a gentleman who contemplates the world with melancholy and sadness.
