ARTS & CULTURE LIVE AT YOUR LIBRARY & BEYOND
The Poetry Festival makes its annual appearance, now in even more venues and offering readings, workshops, exhibitions and special events. Join us in all corners of the county from Worksop and Retford to West Bridgford and Beeston – as well as its original home, Southwell Library. Mansfield is home to a headline event this year, so I do hope you’ll join us in this annual celebration of words. If you don’t quite get your fix, why not join us for free at our Annual AGM where the Paper Crane Poets collective will be giving a special performance. Join us in Beeston Library or online to also hear about our progress over the last year. Also making its annual appearance this season is the fabulous Fun Palace events which every year is a delight to host. A free nationwide celebration of culture and community, Worksop as well as Mansfield Central and Newark libraries will all be rolling out the family fun this year. Libraries Week is hot on the heels, this year celebrating the central role that libraries play in supporting life-long learning. Learning and libraries colleagues work together year-round, but this a great opportunity to showcase how libraries inspire learning for all and help unlock potential. With the launch of our first ever adult learning annual course guide (see pages 24 & 25), this is a great year to unlock your potential with Inspire! So do join us in libraries between 3rd and 9th October to see what is happening – and follow us on socials @NottsLibraries throughout the week. Booking Info:

I’m really looking forward to seeing new venues open during this season. The Newark Buttermarket will be opening in the autumn and later in the year the YMCA Activity Village will both add to the inspiring scene in Newark for culture and learning. CONTROVERSIES IN COAL: INTERNMENT, IMPOUNDMENT AND INTRIGUE AT HARWORTH COLLIERY 1913 – 1924 £3 Worksop Library
The East Coast Main Line skirts the north of Nottinghamshire on its way from Edinburgh to London. Author and popular speaker Adrian Gray gives examples of how inadequate safety measures on the line led to disaster, including famous accidents at Doncaster and Grantham. These occasions where things went badly wrong influenced the gradual improvement of safety down the years.
Harworth Colliery had a chequered history during the eighty-two years of its working life. The controversy started right from its initial development by the Anglo-German firm, the Northern Union Mining Company, in 1913. The migrant sinkers were interned following the outbreak of World War One and the development of the colliery was stopped.

Martin Speake is one of the most interesting and rewarding alto saxophonists now playing jazz on any continent. His playing owes more to the West Coast ‘Cool School’ than to the 60s ideas of John Coltrane, but never ignoring his Bebop roots. Subtle and original arrangements of classics as well as self-penned material. Always original and creative but never losing the listener.

Don’t miss this wonderful wall of wool. Nottinghamshire crafters have embellished Worksop Library Gallery walls with rows and rows of colourful and textured Twiddlers, and they are all for charity!
Over the last 5 years, our team of professional artists have been working creatively to help early years’ children learn new skills and have multi-sensory fun, playful, and creative experiences in nursery settings and libraries across Nottinghamshire. Inspire are very excited to reveal the result of the hard work in this retrospective exhibition.
Come and see how many different Twiddlers there are - and celebrate the amazing skills and generosity of Notts crafters with us. inspireculture.org.uk/knit

Inspired by the words and thoughts of real readers, this exhibition reflects and celebrates everything that happens when we open a book, and poses the question: is reading creative?
From what different readers see or hear, to what they enjoy in a story and the impact reading has on their lives, the exhibition is a striking, poignant and often moving visual interpretation of the reading experience.
