Hanse Yachts need no introduction –they have earned a well-deserved global reputation for their award-winning design and premium build quality. One of the most well-known names in yachting, Hanse has consistently led the way in innovative yacht design since the launch of the first Hanse 291 model in 1993.

As cruising yachts they are renowned for their comfort and ease of handling, making them perfect for short-handed or family sailing. Each Hanse features a self-tacking jib and all lines cleverly run back to the cockpit for effortless control.

The Hanse construction techniques of hand-laid hulls, laminated bulkheads and structural subframes result in a yacht that is strong and stiff, ensuring reliable and safe sailing in all conditions.

With a new partner in Berret-Racoupeau Yacht Design leading to some exciting new models including the 360, 410 and 590, the Hanse range is well worth exploring.

NEW MODEL

HANSE

The all-new Hanse 360 is another new model from the thriving Berret-Racoupeau design partnership and will replace the outgoing Hanse 348 and 388.

The spacious interior is complimented with an abundance of natural light, which in turn makes the 360 feel like a much larger boat. Available with 2 or 3 cabins and a raft of interior options and features, she is as much a comfortable cruiser as her bigger sister the Hanse 410.

The Hanse DNA is evident in how she sails too – the self-tacking jib and all lines running back to the helm make her a breeze to sail short-handed.

The Hanse 360 is not only designed to appeal to those looking to take their first steps into sailboat ownership, but also to more experienced sailors seeking a comfortable cruiser.

The FJORD name is synonymous with the 'day boat' concept, being one of the first brands to identify just how owners were using their boats.

The latest XL (inboard diesel) and XP (outboard) versions now offer a wealth of comfortable accommodation and all of the practical deck space you could need for a day on the water with family and friends.

Available in both an XL (inboard) and XP (outboard) variant with either Volvo Penta or Mercury Verado propulsion, both with joystick control, there is a lot on offer in 39 feet.

The layout itself is pure FJORD – an aft sunpad with dining area and an outdoor galley/ wetbar, all topped off with a huge T-top

Performance. Luxury. Carbon construction.

HH Catamarans are designed to withstand the rigours of sailing around the world in speed, comfort and style.

GONE WITH THE WYNNS

The HH44 OC was chosen by adventuring duo The Wynns. With parallel hybrid electric drives, hydro regeneration and an extensive sail wardrobe, Curiosity2 met their desire for maximum self-sufficiency and sustainability into the future. They have shared this adventure from day one: find out more at www.gonewiththewynns.com or YouTube.

With a range spanning from 44 to 88 feet, utilising carbon fibre and the latest construction techniques, HH Catamarans are the ultimate fast cruising, performance multihulls.

Every model in the HH range is designed for those seeking a catamaran that will eat up the miles when on longer passages, whilst ensuring those on board are accommodated in ultimate luxury.

If you have any doubts as to the strength and sailing ability of an HH, just take a look at them racing in St Barts – flying a hull is not for the faint-hearted, but fortunately these incredible yachts have so much more to offer than just pure speed.

A true bluewater cruising boat with a host of features for comfort when aboard, the award-winning HH range are extraordinary multihulls.

HH44 SC
HH55

SAILING EVOLUTION

The all-new HH52 is an evolution of the awardwinning HH50, which has been redesigned with electrification in mind. Featuring a new cabin top with custom solar array, deck plan, interior layout and increased sail area, this yacht boasts HH's very latest design features and performance improvements.

The semi-custom layout offers a high degree of personalisation; two or three cabins can be combined with a multitude of layout options, including a dedicated workshop, an island or U-shaped galley, and optional BBQ area with dive tank storage to name a few.

Forward or aft helm

With helm stations aft, all sailing and steering is managed with clear visibility of the sails. It can also be swung inboard for protection from the elements. This version features a larger interior saloon which provides a level of comfort and refinement not found in any other performance cruising catamaran this size.

The forward helm station provides a central, protected location to operate all sail controls from. This is a superb configuration for easy, short-handed sailing. Optional aft tiller chairs with push button sail controls bring back the thrill of sailing typically reserved for a performance monohull.

Ocean Cruising model

The OC variation is a fast, comfortable cruiser that skews towards ease of operation for bluewater cruising. It features an aluminium mast, e-glass longeron and mini-keels as standard instead of daggerboards.

Sports Cruising model

The SC option integrates the very latest in race boat technology but remains equally as comfortable as a family cruiser. This is a ‘nocompromise boat’ with carbon daggerboards, carbon rig, 4,232 watts of solar and the HH EcoDrive as standard equipment. Whether you opt for the OC or SC, you will be stepping aboard one of the most exciting multihulls in production.

NAVIGATING THE WAY FOR A SMOOTH TRANSACTION

Brokerage can be a complex area, and expert knowledge can prove vital. We asked Peter Norris, ABYA Fellow and Chairman of the ABYA Regulation Committee, about recent developments and how ABYA are playing a key role in supporting the industry.

For those that do not know much about the YBDSA, YDSA and ABYA, could you give us a brief overview of the organization?

The Yacht Brokers Designers and Surveyors Association (YBDSA) is the supervisory organisation that supports the day-to-day functions of both the Yacht Designers and Surveyors Association (YDSA) and the Association of Brokers and Yacht Agents (ABYA).

The aims of the YDSA and ABYA are centred around ensuring exacting standards within their respective fields and promoting professionalism and expertise.

ABYA recently introduced a Code of Practice for its members – what was the thinking behind formalising this?

ABYA introduced a Code of Practice for its members to formalise standards and ethical guidelines, aiming to enhance professionalism, trust, and consumer confidence within the yacht brokerage industry.

When a broker is a member of ABYA, you can be confident that you are dealing with an individual who has taken the time to ensure they are operating to the highest professional standards across areas such as Anti-Money Laundering, Regulatory Compliance and Consumer Protection.

Whilst for many buyers and sellers, these are complex issues, the broker is there to ensure both parties in any transaction are protected and walk away confident the process has been completed successfully.

There are plenty of people who choose to buy and sell boats privately – what would you say are the main reasons people should consider using a broker?

The world of boat sales has become significantly more complex and with international transactions more common and boat values being much higher, it is more important than ever as either a purchaser or a seller to ensure your transaction is completed in a legally sound and compliant way.

ABYA brokers adhere to a Code of Practice, offering a framework for addressing and resolving any disputes that may arise during the transaction.

Using an ABYA broker, who adheres to a strict Code of Practice, can enhance buyer confidence, and attract more serious enquiries compared to private sales. With access to numerous brokeronly portals, they will also be more likely to negotiate an acceptable deal for both parties, supported by the latest pricing data.

By leveraging the expertise, resources, and professional standards of an ABYA Yacht Broker, both buyers and sellers can enjoy a more secure, efficient, and satisfactory transaction process.

Has Brexit created a more complex environment for boat sales with regards to paperwork, such as RCD, VAT Status, Customs and so on?

Yes, Brexit has indeed created a more complex environment for boat sales in the UK and the EU, particularly concerning paperwork such

as the Recreational Craft Directive (RCD), VAT status, and customs procedures.

Boats sold in the UK must comply with UK Conformity Assessed (UKCA) marking instead of the EU's CE marking, which means boats must meet different sets of regulations depending on where they are sold. For boats to be sold in both the UK and EU markets, they may require dual certification to meet both UKCA and CE marking requirements, increasing costs and administrative burden.

The VAT status of boats has become more complex. Buyers and sellers must provide clear proof of VAT status. Boats imported into the UK from the EU, and vice versa, might be subject to VAT again unless they can prove VAT was previously paid and the person importing the vessel back to the country was the person that originally exported it. The market for secondhand boats has been particularly affected.

A boat that was VAT-paid in the EU but now located in the UK might be liable for VAT again if it is sold back into the EU, and vice versa.

Brexit has introduced new customs procedures for boats moving between the UK and EU. Import and export declarations are now required, which adds an extra layer of complexity and potential delays.

Clear documentation proving ownership, VAT status, and compliance with safety and environmental regulations has become even more critical. Any gaps or errors in paperwork can lead to significant delays and complications.

You personally have done a lot of work recently on the topic of Pooled Client Accounts for Yacht Brokers involving the FCA, HMRC and the Treasury – can you tell us what a Client Account is and why they are so important for the industry?

Certainly! A Client Account, often referred to as a Pooled Client Account (PCA), is a bank account used by brokers (including yacht brokers) to hold funds on behalf of their clients. These funds can include deposits, purchase

money, or sale proceeds. The funds held in a Client Account are kept separate from the broker's own operating funds. This segregation ensures that client money is protected in the event of the broker's insolvency or financial difficulties.

Using an ABYA broker, who adheres to a strict Code of Practice, can enhance buyer confidence, and attract more serious enquiries compared to private sales.

Finally, what would you say are going to be the key areas of focus for ABYA over the next few years?

Over the next few years, ABYA is likely to focus on several key areas to ensure the continued professionalism, growth, and stability of the yacht brokerage industry. This will include the development of a strategic alliance with British Marine to extend our aims across the yacht brokering industry with ABYA focusing on the individual brokers and British Marine focusing on the businesses.

THINKING OF SELLING YOUR EX-VAT BOAT?

There are some key issues to be aware of…

One of the benefits of Brexit for non-UK boaters has been the opportunity to utilise the EU’s Temporary Admission Relief to allow the use of a sail or motor yacht in European waters without the vessel needing to hold a VAT Paid Status (VPS).

It's also worth noting the UK operates the same scheme for non-UK residents sailing their boat to the UK, which allows Channel Island and EU residents to visit our waters in a nonUK VAT Paid vessel.

Both the UK and EU schemes have strict qualification criteria and rules that must be adhered to, but they are not overly onerous with the emphasis being on documentation of arrival and departure dates.

Over the last 3 years we have delivered a number of boats down into the Mediterranean that are successfully utilising Temporary Admission, but now some owners are thinking about changing or upgrading and the restrictions that apply for a boat under Temporary Admission means this needs careful planning.

Under the rules of Temporary Admission (TA) you cannot berth and offer the boat for sale within the EU member states (and the same rule applies to Channel Island boats looking to sell within the UK) whilst that boat is under TA –the act of placing a boat on the market for sale requires a formal import of the boat and the payment of VAT at the applicable rate.

That has a number of drawbacks, the very obvious one being a cashflow impact to you as an owner of somewhere between 19-25% depending on the country of choice!

Whilst an EU VAT Paid boat is appealing to EU residents, it is less so for UK Residents who may want to take the boat elsewhere, or even continue using TA under their ownership. Maintaining the non-VAT Paid status for the listing gives maximum flexibility and will attract the broadest range of potential purchasers.

There are opportunities to base yourself in one of the non-EU member states such as Gibraltar or Montenegro, but both come with their own problems of access out of peak season, with Montenegro especially difficult to fly to outside of the summer months.

Our experience so far is that many owners and EU brokers are not aware of these restrictions or choose to ignore them, but this comes at a risk. If the boat is discovered as being offered for sale within Europe and does not hold the relevant VAT Paid status, you could find yourself as the owner on the receiving end of a large fine and interest on unpaid VAT which will need to be settled in advance of any sale progressing.

Whilst an EU VAT Paid boat is appealing to EU residents, it is less so for UK Residents… Maintaining the non-VAT Paid status for the listing gives maximum flexibility and will attract the broadest range of potential purchasers.

With this in mind, Inspiration Marine are in the process of securing an approved HMRC Customs Warehouse facility in the UK that will enable us to import boats to the UK and hold them for sale in a secure location, without the need for the boat to be either UK or EU VAT Paid.

Depending on the purchaser’s situation and requirements, once a sale is completed the boat can either be released as an ex VAT sale, delivered and imported into the EU where VAT can be formally accounted for by the purchaser, or released into the UK with the new owner paying UK VAT on the eventual sale price.

With our experienced team of Customs Agents, Tax Advisors and Yacht Delivery Specialists, we can help arrange the entire process for you and ensure all the required formalities have been completed and documented.

If you currently have a boat in the Mediterranean or Channel Islands and are thinking of selling, please do get in touch to see how we can help.

The above article does not constitute specific tax or customs advice and you should seek the services of a professional accountant or tax advisor if you are unsure as to your rights to utilise Temporary Admission or any other financial scheme or relief.

CASE STUDY: SERVICE AND PREPARATION FOR THE ARC HANSE 460

After a winter of Solent sailing, the recently delivered Hanse 460 'Mageia' set off from Lymington to cruise a bit further afield, visiting northern France before rounding Land's End and heading north as far as the Outer Hebrides.

Mageia returned to Hamble in late June for six weeks of service work before setting out south to join the Atlantic Rally for Cruisers. The ARC starts from Las Palmas in the Canary Islands and then across the Atlantic Ocean, typically taking around 15-20 days before making landfall in St. Lucia.

The owners asked us to help prepare their 460 for ocean sailing which demands more of the crew and the boat. This initially started with all the basics such as a full engine and generator service, which we organised using our expert local contractors.

Before she was hauled out, we carried out an in-water rig inspection to check for any anomalies, and scheduled a rig tune for relaunch. With conditions in the Atlantic being much harsher than most of us would find on an average day in the Solent, special care needs to be taken to ensure the rig and sails are prepped accordingly.

Once out of the water, we embarked on a full hull maintenance regime – the existing antifoul was power sanded before three fresh coats were reapplied, along with Trilux to the saildrive, a full hull and deck polish and wax, and a complete set of fresh anodes.

Before embarking on a long trip, we would always recommend taking the opportunity to undertake a comprehensive inspection and service – preventative maintenance helps to avoid unforeseen problems cropping up right when you don't want them to!

We also took proactive measures to ensure Mageia's readiness for cruising long-distance with a comprehensive set of spares, including a sail repair kit, steering cables, and autopilot. A remote control for the windlass was also fitted, enhancing the ease of anchor deployment and retraction, especially during short-handed sailing. With all the checks completed and the modifications made, she was ready for relaunch.

Mageia departed Hamble ready for her adventures across the Atlantic; we wish her well on her travels and look forward to the photos from St Lucia!

DRIVEN BY PASSION, LEADING BY DESIGN

Andreas Unger, Product Manager with Hanse Yachts, talked to us about the ethos behind the new design direction, and driving the brands forward.

Please could you tell us a little bit about your background and how you came to be Product Manager with Hanse Yachts ?

I formerly worked for a Hanse dealer in the south of Germany as a young boatbuilding master, which is how I got into the Hanse world. Then I applied for a job at the shipyard, where I managed various production lines. In line 2, the Hanse 575 came onto my production line. I kept telling the development team what needed to be optimised to get my line running again, which was so well received by the board that I was then asked to make it my main job as part of the development team. I was then part of the project management team and was also involved in all the boat tests. I then took over the vacant position as Product Manager, which I have been doing since 2019.

You are responsible for the sailboat portfolio design and development, is that correct? What does a normal day at work look like for you? That's right, I'm part of our design and development team. I represent the commercial area there, i.e. I find out how the market is developing, what the needs of our dealers and customers are and which boats in our portfolio need a refresh. I don't have a real daily routine, but that's not a bad thing, as each phase of development places different demands on me. It starts with meetings with the designers, regular project meetings, benchmarking, pricing, model year changes and regular visits to production to see how the prototypes are being developed and built, but I'm also very interested in the start of series production, as I then incorporate the experience gained into the next products. And although unfortunately not every day, I can proudly say that I get to test our boats the most and for the longest time of the entire shipyard.

The last three or so years have been a big period for development with Hanse, Dehler and Moody all launching new models – that must have been an exciting time for the design and development teams?

Yes, that's true – stagnation means death in this field. With the new Hanse 460, we have launched a new line, and of course, we're now keen to update all our boats to the new design as quickly as possible. Dehler and Moody are also important to us. It's exciting that we can build very different boats with the same team, but it's also challenging because you really have to explain to everyone which design principles should be carried over and which definitely should not. Here, the balance between the common parts strategy and brand differentiation is crucial. But I am very satisfied with all three brands!

Hanse now has a new design partner in BerretRacoupeau which has resulted in the Hanse 460, Hanse 410 and the new Hanse 360 and Hanse 590 – why do you think the new designs have been so popular for Hanse?

We worked very intensively with Olivier and his team on the new Hanse design. It was very important to us to usher in a new era while retaining the well-known and successful Hanse DNA. In hindsight, this sounds logical, but it’s actually a very complex process that even major car manufacturers don’t always manage to pull off. However, it worked very well for us as a team because we all had just one goal: to build the best boat. I was recently on vacation in the Mediterranean and saw a Hanse 460 entering the harbour, and I simply thought to myself how beautiful it was as it glided through the smooth water of the harbour entrance.

The new Hanse 360 and Hanse 590 are both launching this autumn – are you excited for these new models and what are the key features that you think will make them stand out in the market?

The two new Hanse models complement the portfolio both at the top and bottom, which makes it quite exciting to develop these boats simultaneously, as completely different solutions are required in many areas. But, as I mentioned at the beginning, this is the strength of our team – to be able to adapt our mindset very quickly. The Hanse 360 is our space wonder, and it sails really well too. I've had about two weeks to thoroughly test the boat.

The Hanse 590, due to its size, presents a different challenge. Here we can even shake up some of the fundamental concepts, as we did, for example, with the cockpit. We introduced completely new approaches that have never been seen on a boat before, something that can't be implemented on a 36-foot boat. However, one must also be careful not to stray too far from the familiar. For example, in our cockpit concept, it was important to me that, as the helmsman, I still stand at the very back so that I can always keep an eye on my crew. This is a safety-related aspect that was considered from the very beginning of the concept. I could provide many more examples, but that would go beyond the scope here.

Is there a core formula to designing a great sailing boat or does design have to continually react to changes in customer requirements?

I believe there is no secret formula for success; it depends on many factors that are constantly changing. You can only stay active, put your heart and soul into development, keep your eyes open, and be very sensitive to the market. It's also important to observe other industries to identify where there is potential for trends and innovations. Simply looking within the boating industry is exciting, but you'll never be a first mover that way.

Put your heart and soul into development, keep your eyes open, and be very sensitive to the market. Simply looking within the boating industry is exciting, but you'll never be a first mover that way.

The Moody DS48 is another fantastic boat recently launched this year – you worked alongside Bill Dixon on this. What was that project like to work on?

Working with Bill and his team is always very exciting, as Bill is still Mr. Moody to me. He is the best designer with the most experience in the field of deck saloon sailboats. After the successful DS41, the DS48 was a very exciting further development, where we knew exactly what we wanted and still made many things possible. What always fascinates me about this concept is the sailing potential that lies within these boats. When I go on board with journalists, I often see the astonished looks when the boats start moving even in light winds. This simply speaks to the design and skill of Bill and his team.

Do you manage to get out and sail yourself much or do you like to relax away from boats?! Both, I enjoyed testing the Hanse 360 with my family over the weekend. Especially my wife, who is very critical of my boats and gives me direct feedback, and that's one of the things I love about her. But otherwise, we spend a lot of time on and around the water; it's simply my life.

THE INSPIRATION MARINE COMMISSIONING PROCESS

You’ve signed the contract and are eagerly awaiting the arrival of your new yacht. For any owner, especially one embarking on this journey for the first time, this can be a daunting position to be in. Our aim is to ensure that the next step is as straightforward and enjoyable as possible, all the way up to your handover day.

There are so many aspects to consider when buying a new boat – what kind of sailing do you want to do? Where will you be venturing to?

Whether it’s Solent cruising or ocean crossing adventures, we will do everything we can to ensure the boat is set up for your requirements.

Once the contract is signed, the commissioning team will sit down with the sales team to run through your order in detail to make sure they are up to speed with your specification and what you hope to achieve with the boat. Understanding what is key for you really helps us guide you through the numerous choices you have, so the more you can share with us the better! As the build process progresses, we'll be in touch to tell you a bit more

about a few things you’ll need to think about before the boat arrives, including insurance, registration, safety kit and some of the post-build extras we can offer from our UK specialists. In the background, we will be working hard on arranging the logistics of getting your new boat to your preferred commissioning location which is a complex undertaking involving the Hanse shipyard, transport companies, customs authorities and the marina.

Whilst we are perfectly set up at Hamble Point Marina and handle something in the region of 25 new boats a year arriving from Germany, we also regularly commission and deliver directly to the Mediterranean using our two bases in Slovenia and Barcelona.

How long does a new boat's commissioning take?

We are often asked this questions and the honest answer is it depends…! The standard PDI and commissioning process can be anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks depending on the size and complexity of the boat. During this process we check and test all the systems from water to fuel, electronics to rigging and put the boat through a number of sea trials.

We’ll arrange a commissioning meeting with you, which is a great opportunity to get on board your new boat together and confirm locations for various installations. You'll also usually meet the engineer who will be working on your boat, so it's a nice chance for them to get to know you and chat through any questions you have.

In the run up to handover day, it's time for more final checks and for the install of any additional equipment you decide to order. We have the boats fully valeted just before your handover day and then it’s time for handover – an exciting day for any new owner!

Useful things to think about whilst your new boat is in build:

First and foremost, a name!

We work closely with a local graphics company who will be able to provide to scale proofs, as well as suggest fonts and styles that might work with your chosen name.

Registration

There are a couple of options when it comes to registering your new boat under a UK flag. The most popular option is the simple and inexpensive Part 3 or SSR (Small Ships Register). This is valid for five years and is perfect for UK residents using their boat for personal leisure use.

The more involved Part 1 registration ensures you can prove your boat’s nationality wherever you are in the world. A lot more paperwork is required, as well as a tonnage survey, but we can help you organise this if you chose to undertake the application by yourself. Otherwise, we can recommend Oceanskies Yacht Registrations Specialists who can advise and facilitate the whole process for you.

Insurance

You will need to ensure that your new boat is covered by your insurer from the point of handover. We have found customers to be very happy with the service provided by Dean Shaw at Gallagher, based in Poole, who will be able to come up with a tailor-made policy for you depending on where and how you want to use your new boat.

Safety Equipment

We can put together a list of safety kit that we can source on your behalf so it is all ready and installed on board ahead of your handover.

Additional installs

Whether it’s generators and watermakers for ocean passages, or adding wifi or a TV for more home comforts on board, we can help facilitate most requests whilst the boat is in commissioning.

AN OWNER’S PERSPECTIVE

We asked Tim, owner of Hanse 460 ‘Mahana’ to share his extensive boat-buying experience, and any advice he has for those embarking on this adventure themselves.

Tell us about your sailing background. What got you into sailing, where have you sailed, what do you enjoy about it?

The first time I set foot on a yacht was an invite to a corporate day at Cowes Week. I’d never sailed before and had no interest to do so. I spent the day in the Solent with all the other corporate guests throwing up in a Force 9. At the end of that day all the others got off the yacht saying they will never get on a yacht again – I went home grinning and knew I had to have my own yacht. So, my background, before buying my first yacht was absolutely zero. I am now some 10,000 miles into my log book – with 99% of that being solo – and all of it in the North Sea and the English Channel.

What boats have you owned to date?

I took delivery of my first yacht (a new Hanse 385) in 2013. I then purchased a new Hanse 458 and have just taken delivery of my third new Hanse, my pride and joy, the Hanse 460. So in 10 years I’ve had three new Hanse yachts.

What attracted you to the Hanse range initially?

Before deciding on the Hanse 385 as my first yacht, I can remember doing the rounds and test sails with all the major modern production yacht manufacturers. I instantly fell in love with the modern interior design of the Hanse and what appeared to me to be the simplicity of sailing and solid feel to them. Remember at the time of placing the order for the 385 I had no idea how to sail, so I wanted a yacht that would be easy to sail, solid build, modern lines and a clean apartment style interior. Hanse ticked all boxes – and the other brands didn’t. There was something else which was important to me – being a sailing virgin – and that was the ‘feeling’ I got from the firm I was buying from. What support would I get? You guys at Hanse / Inspiration Marine trumped all the others. Three Hanse yachts later, I know I made the right decision on the 385 some 10 years ago.

You have just taken delivery of a new Hanse 460, your third Hanse – tell us a bit about what attracted you to that model?

Twin head sails, the hard top, solar, lithium, living space and ease of sailing. The permanently rigged twin head sails really caught my eye. I’d wanted this set up for a long time. And with ability to hoist a third downwind sail – you have every angle covered. I expected the hard top would transform the cockpit and it has literally doubled the usable space in all weather, at anchor or in a marina. The hard top is fully loaded with solar as I wanted to be off grid.

Having now spent some time at the helm with her, what are your first impressions?

She is so fast! SOG is constantly above the standard specifications. The ease of sailing her single handed – well I guess that was no surprise to me having had the 385 and the 458 previously. All the things that attracted me to the 460 (the twin head sails are a dream) the cockpit with the hard top transforms the yacht. And as for that solar, you can literally throw the shore power cable away. I’ve not connected her to shore power since taking delivery. Oh and one last thing –she is solid – you feel super safe.

Follow your gut and go with the dealers you sense will be there for you years after handover day.

I’d suggest getting that bit right is as important as the yacht itself.

Do you have any advice or guidance for those looking to buy a new boat?

Do the rounds, do the test sails, do all of that. But remember when you settle on your preferred brand and model, you are not just buying a new yacht. Especially if it’s your first yacht, remember you are buying the support, advice and time of the dealer supplying it. None of that less tangible stuff gets listed in any contract, so follow your gut and go with the dealers you sense will be there for you years after hand over day. I’d suggest getting that bit right is as important as the yacht itself. You guys at Hanse gave me that feeling 10 years ago – and three yachts in I reckon my gut was right about you and your team.

Finally, what are your sailing plans for you and ‘Mahana’?

Kick around the English Channel this season (work keeps getting in the way!). Next year I should be clear from the shackles of work, then head south until the butter melts and see where I end up. That’s the current plan anyway – unless you ruin it by launching another faster, sexier Hanse that I have to come back and buy!

REFLECTING ON 5 YEARS' CRUISING THE MED WITH 'BABY Z'

From a childhood sailing on the Solent, FJORD owner Paul now has the enviable combination of a 34m Sanlorenzo and FJORD 38 XP chase boat. We asked him about his experiences of boat ownership over the years.

Please tell us a little bit about your boating background.

I have always been keen on the sea, my father used to sail around the Solent on a little sailing yacht with the family. My first boat was really for waterskiing in Langstone harbour. I remember it was built in Wales by a company called Concorde. I knew nothing about either the brand or speedboats for that matter. I must have been a salesman’s dream!

I quickly moved on to a Fletcher Arrowbolt 21 with a petrol inboard and then a Fairline Corniche 31’ but one of the few with BMW marine diesel engines. A disaster from day one and soon traded her in for the same model but with reliable Volvo Pentas! Lesson learnt from all of these was always buy a well-known trusted brand with good aftersales support.

At one point I owned a Sunseeker red Tomahawk with V8 petrols originally built for, I believe, Nigel Mansell when he raced

for Ferrari. At that point I lived in Port Solent and don’t think I was very popular with other apartment owners when I started up two V8 7.2 litre open exhausts but it was a fun boat!

Later I bought a Princess V78, based in Palma which I purchased used from Sanlorenzo. The service from them was so great, we took more interest in them as a brand and some 40 years on since my first boat I now own a Sanlorenzo SD112 with a FJORD 38 XP as a chase boat…the perfect combination.

Tell us a bit about how you decided those two models were the right fit?

I noticed, having been in the Med for 5 years, that very few boats belt around at top speed but average between 10-12 knots. Despite my original SL being capable of 28 knots and apart from its twin 16 cylinder MTUs guzzling fuel, it really is more comfortable going around at 10 knots hence I now have the semi displacement hull of my Sanlorenzo SD112.

I left the belting around to the UK where I had my new FJORD 38 XP initially after handover. When I purchased her in 2019 there were very few open boats with walk around decks, a design that has now become popular with other makes.

With Brexit on the horizon, I had thought about taking the FJORD out to join Zulu 3 so I spec’d the FJORD with towing hooks built in the bow so she could be towed around on longer journeys in the Med.

I chose to have the joystick option which makes berthing incredibly easy along with auto anchor mode which in a tidal area is particularly important. It’s also very useful if you are on your own, allowing you to leave the helm to hang fenders etc. without the boat moving.

I chose to have the joystick option which makes berthing incredibly easy along with auto anchor mode which in a tidal area is particularly important, clever and useful if on your own to hang fenders etc without the boat moving.

It was the best decision I made for Med boating as she tows perfectly and I have towed her several thousand miles without any problems.

I spec’d her with the help of Inspiration Marine to a very high standard which included six fridges and a great Fusion sound system. In addition we had her sprayed a metallic grey by Desty Marine, which looks as good today as it did when I took delivery.

Is the towing of Baby Z a specialist skill for the captain and crew to manage?

A competent captain and crew have no issues in towing – it’s a simple process, they just have to ensure the safety protocol is always followed.

Insurance requires the FJORD to have AIS fitted and rear facing cameras on board Zulu 3 with a log made every 60 minutes, something which again is pretty standard. If towing overnight, we are able to turn the lights on remotely so there is no need to stop.

Moving from smaller motorboats that you skippered yourself to a bigger boat with crew must have been a big change in mentality –do you miss not being at the helm?

Quite simply having a good crew at this size can make or break your boating experience.

I am quite hands on and drive Zulu 3 myself sometimes just to ensure I still can. The crew are part of the family. Some owners never go down to the engine bay or have any idea how anything works, I am the opposite and like to be involved, maybe too much sometimes but mostly to be helpful.

What was it that drew you to the FJORD and what role were you hoping she would fill?

Having the FJORD particularly in the Ionian makes perfect sense as once we are in a bay stern to the rocks with the FJORD berthed next to us, we can easily go to a different island for lunch or to a beach bar. The FJORD is great for this and because of the space, whether it’s just my wife and I, or 10 of us, she has plenty of room on board and with powerful twin 350s achieving, 35 knots is great fun to spend an afternoon on.

Do you have a pre-determined cruising route for each season or is it more a case of going with the flow?

We love the Ionian but have also been down as far as Mykonos and towed 'Baby Z' through the Corinth canal four times, which is an experience I would recommend to all boaters. Having been in the Med for a few years now, we have done the Balearics, South of France, Italian Riviera, Sardinia, Corsica, Sicily, Croatia and Montenegro which are all great and all have their attributes.

Are there any particular favourites in terms of destinations that are regular haunts?

I think our favourite destination (as we have returned there for the last four years) is the Ionian, the Greeks are such a friendly, welcoming bunch of people.

There are light winds and flat calm waters for the majority, albeit there are the occasional strong winds but it’s easy to find a bay hidden from them.

Are there any cruising areas still on the “to do” list?

There are always areas on our wish list. We haven’t as yet been to Turkey by boat but who knows what next year will bring.

What tips would you give anyone thinking about moving up to a larger, crewed boat?

It is a big change and, as I have said earlier, the crew will make or break your boating experience. Choose carefully and mixing crew from different countries doesn’t always work as some don’t appreciate or understand English humour!

I don’t think the TV show Below Decks has done the industry any good at all as newcomers to boating think it’s easy money and little work – our crew work incredibly hard but for those that love being on the water, it’s a great industry to be in.

Finally, what are your boating plans for the next few years?

That’s a tricky question, but hopefully more of the same as you only live once and not forever!

MARINE FINANCE

If you are considering a new or used boat purchase, the method of funding the purchase will certainly be a consideration. Marine finance is available on new and used vessels and can be surprisingly flexible.

Marine mortgages and loans overview: How do they work?

Similar to a house mortgage, you will own the boat and the lender will place a charge on the boat via the MCA Ships Registry. The boat will need to be Part 1 Registered, which is generally undertaken by the lender directly with the MCA – in a nutshell, it is the Land Registry equivalent for boats.

What terms are available and are the terms flexible?

Loan terms are normally available between 4 – 15 years depending on the price and age of the boat you are considering, and can be issued in GBP or Euros.

Most finance providers offer flexible loans and allow you to inject lump sum payments at any time or settle in full without penalty at any stage.

Loan to value is typically 70% of the purchase price of the boat, but you can always choose to have lower LTVs should you prefer.

When are the funds released from the lender?

For a new boat, the funds will be requested at the point the boat is completed so any deposits required in advance of this will still need to be funded. If you are buying a used boat through our yacht brokerage, the drawdown date will be as close to the completion of the sale process as possible.

What happens when we want to sell or change boats?

As the finance is secured on the vessel, it is vital that it is settled as part of any sale process and if you are using our yacht brokerage to handle the sale, then we will undertake this on your behalf. The broker will, with your permission, contact the lender to obtain a settlement figure and ensure the finance is cleared as part of the sale, giving the new owner peace of mind, and you confidence, that the finance has all been cleared correctly prior to completion.

INSURANCE

With over twenty years' experience insuring all sorts of boats all over the world, Dean Shaw from Gallagher Marine Insurance gave us his thoughts on some key areas to consider when insuring your boat.

Valuation Basis

You should insure your total purchase price. ‘Agreed-value’ policies (the best ones) pay the ‘agreed-value’ in the event of total loss; this figure needs to be based on your financial involvement in the boat. Happily, insurers are wise to the recent rise in boat prices and have come up with a number of options to bridge the gap between purchase price and replacement cost by the time she’s delivered.

Lithium Batteries

Insurers are comfortable with Lithium battery systems fitted by the manufacturer during build or retro-fitted by professional marine electricians – if retro-fitting, your insurer may ask for a copy of the final invoice. Lithium outboards are also no problem provided the manufacturers’ instructions are followed, but some Lithium powered water-toys will attract special terms and conditions.

Rigging Inspections

As rigging technology has improved, insurers are reluctant to apply hard-and-fast rules where rigging is concerned. New yachts are exempt from rig inspections but insurers are taking a more risk-specific approach; carbon rigs will need inspecting much more regularly than their aluminium counterparts – a transAtlantic and/or serious racing campaign may also be a trigger.

Racing and Events

Many insurers will cover Round the Island Race entry without additional premium. However, reflecting a poor general claims experience, premium rates for competitive racing and off-shore events have risen significantly.

Underwater Damage

For motorboat owners the most likely big claim is underwater damage. There’s all sorts of flotsam out there; even the most experienced owner can’t beat some barely visible detritus at 30 knots. However, on this crucial issue not all insurance policies are made equal. Some apply increased excesses for underwater gear claims, others reduce settlement amounts in line with the boat’s age – some insurers do both. Be sure to check this with your broker.

Top Tips:

• Sailors tend to benefit from lower premium rates – they tend to have slower accidents!

• Motorboat owners should pay attention to how underwater gear claims are handled/settled and compare the policies on offer.

• ‘All-risks’ and ‘agreed-value’ is the best cover and will cost a bit more. Whilst gathering quotes be aware of any that look a lot cheaper than the rest as there is normally a reason.

• Keep all your purchase and service receipts to be able to prove maintenance history.
