Save your Coffee for friday nightS This fall, they’re long from happily ever after… By JennI WILLIaMs

i

t’s hard to contain the excitement we’re feeling about the fall, a season we semi-pro couch potatoes look forward to most. not only are the weekends perfectly content on network stations with college football to pass the time, but we’re also lucky enough to have the weeknights packed with fresh silver-screen meat and new seasons of our favorite halfhour/hour friends. and amidst the courtroom dramas, the medical rom-coms and the murder mystery sagas, there’s a little taste of something farther beyond the realm of reality, offering an escape into the world of make-believe you probably haven’t experienced since disney’s dark days—oh wait, ok so you might have never experienced it. the show is Grimm (airing Fridays 9/8c this fall on nBc). at most basic, it’s all of the aforementioned television favorites, but with a twist—these protagonists (and antagonists) are fairy tale creatures trying to stop farther infiltration of evil super naturals. how would you explain that all the stories you heard at bedtime were actually real? thus, Grimm attempts to tell the story of a detective dealing with these other worldly explanations for crime in the city. the guys doing the explaining are the same ones who made vampires and treasure

ending, and rarely even kindred spirit to the conclusion you thought you knew. We recently got to sit down with claire coffee, one of the stars of the new nBc show. (You may remember her from the West Wing). recently finishing a crowdpleasing stint as Janie on tnt’sFranklin & Bash, she discovers her inner monster having the time of her life. How do you balance a scary drama with something so straight forward? Well, Franklin & Bash wrapped production in december and we were very happy with it, so i am not actually shooting them at the same time. We won’t start shooting episodes of Grimmuntil august 1. Janie (F&B) is a classic type a personality. i definitely harbor some of those traits, like someone who has a hard time seeing the forest for the trees, so that role comes naturally. Plus, both characters are lawyers. the difference is that Grimm lets me play a monster of sorts—i’m a secret evil witch. i get to really perform and i love it. Why did you want to do Grimm? i have always wanted to do something that is character-based. that added to the fact that i absolutely love monsters and aliens. i grew up loving aliens and dinosaurs and all that stuff. i was a huge star trek fan. space is just so thrilling. We know so little about it. i love getting to play such a vicious character. that’s really fun. Plus, all of the cGi is something i hadn’t done before. it’s very cool. What was your favorite fairy tale growing up? hansel and Gretel What are you hoping fans will say about Grimm? i hope they think it’s scary. Well, other than Grimm, what are you setting your TIVO for this fall? smash is a can’t-miss. it’s going to be huge. and awake—i am really looking forward to that. (both are nBc shows out this fall, day and times are tBd) After playing something so fond to your heart, how does F&B compare?

You know, you see so many scripts, do so many pilot screenings, but i just liked how this one had real humor and characters that were funny individually. it’s different from what you’d normally see on tV these days. the script has the same sense of humor as i do. What can you tell Zack Morris fans about working with the real thing? (Laughs) Mark-Paul is fantastic. his onscreen persona is just larger than life and it was awesome to get to see just how funny he is. he is so talented and so charming. i think this was a good role for him because he hasn’t been able to do comedy in awhile. not since the saved by the Bell days. Will we get to see more Janie and Peter next season? they’ve left everything very open-ended. that’s all i can say. How did you get started in acting? i have been in musical theatre since age five and worked regularly throughout childhood. i loved the theatre way too much to do anything else. Who inspires you as a TV actor now? amy Poehler on Parks & recreation. there is not a lot of half hour comedy that is as good and fun as what she does. she is a great role model for any woman in comedy. other than her, there are way too many people to get specific and honestly, you never know what kind of chemistry you’ll have with someone until you actually get on the set. But i hope to work with people who are smart and have good energy, people i click with. My greatest audition experience was reading opposite aaron sorkin for the West Wing. he was so inspiring. Anything else you want to do besides act? i really just want to keep working. sustainability is the ultimate goal. i want to stay challenged and interested. i am lucky to work with very talented people and feel supported on each job. What was the best thing about filming the Franklin & Bash pilot in Atlanta? eating cheese grits!

GUYS AND DOLLS is an oddball romantic comedy considered by many to be the perfect musical comedy. It soars with the spirit of Broadway while introducing us to a vivid cast of characters. bet and ends up falling in love; Adelaide, the chronically ill nightclub performer whose condition is brought on by the fact she's been engaged to the same man for 14 years; and Nathan Detroit, her devoted fiancé, desperate as always to find a spot for his infamous floating crap game.

THE GREEN BOOK

August 17 - September 11 Balzer Theater at Herren’s Box Office (678)528.1500

www.theatricaloutfit.org Set in 1953 Jefferson City, MO THE GREEN BOOK addresses the racial tension of a period marked by Jim Crow laws and segregation, remembering an element rarely recorded in the history books: Victor H. Green's The Negro Motorist Green Book. This manual helped guide black tourists to restaurants and residences where they could safely dine and stay overnight pre-Civil Rights Movement. When a young African American couple and a Holocaust survivor share accommodations, the juxtaposition of local and international discrimination causes the household to share a dramatic exchange that transforms their lives.

Who Wants to be a Game shoW host? Oddly, the Answer is the Multi-Talented, Always-Hilarious Cedric the Entertainer by demarcO williams

T

V game shows are fickled lil’ buggers. most of us love watching folks squirm over a trivia question or frantically race around a human mousetrap. at the same time though, we hate how the shows drag on forever and ever on the tube. deal or No deal is an hour-long production? really?! But we totally get the game the networks are playing: low production costs, cheap thrills, lots of commercials. even if the contestant losses, most nights the channel wins pretty darn big with Nielsen. NBc’s latest foray into the genre is it’s worth what?, a quirky, The Price is right meets antique roadshow program hosted and co-produced by cedric the entertainer. if there’s anybody who can make a showcase showdown filled with original e.T. posters, vintage harleys and roy rogers’ stuffed horse seem fun, it’s ceddie. in this light-hearted conversation, the 47-yearold comedian/actor jokes about the show’s outrageous sticker prices, larry crowne’s terrible box office numbers and the evolution of black comedy. So, what was the most memorable moment from the show that you’ve done so far? well, so far, i would say the most memorable moment we did, was we brought out a…well, i had a couple of them. on the show, we brought out a live elephant and [compared] the price of keeping a live elephant versus an elephant-sized diamond. and so, i actually fed the elephant an apple. and then i taught the elephant how to dougie. What would you say is the most important thing you learned from the time you spent on the show? Probably one of the most important things on there is that people who go on game shows are very serious and just that, you know, that we followed the compliances. You know, because the thing about it is you, actually as a host, you’re closer to the contestants than anything else. and so, you’re really wanting people to weigh in and you’ve just got to make sure that you don’t trigger or give off any kind of signals that leads or misleads, you know, the people that are playing the game. and so that was the thing that i, you know, probably found that was most important for me was just trying not to lead or mislead people because, you know, you won’t be able to win. How you would do if you were a contestant on the show? oh, you know, i thought i was pretty good but it was definitely times when playing this game that i realized i don’t have no idea what stuff costs. That’s what makes the game really fun and fun to watch because we all assume like we, you know, we have our expertise [on], you know, be it the price of women’s shoes or what, you know, houses costs. You just think that you know this. But it was a game where we had vacation rentals. and nobody knew that the Playboy suite in Vegas was that expensive per night. i had no idea. i was just thinking with all those Playboy bunnies, you know, in there, yes, you probably would have to spend a lot of money so... When you look back at game show hosts of the past, do you think some of them would PG 10 • insiteatlanta.com • August 2011

have been great comedians or do you think they were already comedians and didn’t know it? well, i mean probably yes. i mean, you know, i think Tom Bergeron (dancing with the stars) is funny. like, i mean, he’s, you know, he’s a modern day, you know, game show host. But he’s very witty and quick. You know, i’ve had an opportunity to be around him a few times. gene rayburn (match game) was, you know, interesting. But most of the time, they almost came off pretty seriously. You know, you think of, you know, monty hall (let’s make a deal) and wink martindale (high roller) and Bob Barker (The Price is right). These guys were, you kind of bought them for their sincerity and kind of swag, if you will. and so, very few of them i thought could probably be funny. But, you know, i think nowadays you see a lot more, of course, with the howie mandells (deal or No deal) and the Jeff foxworthys (are You smarter Than a 5th grader?) and all these guys and they’re hosting shows. [The Price is right’s] drew carrey [too]. You know, i think it’s, you know, leaning more towards keeping the shows funny and moving and keeping that energy up.

We know that you’re actually an executive producer of the show. So, how do you balance all of your starring roles and being on the executive side of things? i guess my main thing is that i’m actually, you know, i really would be very involved with my brand. it’s important to, you know, get involved creatively with the shows. and so the creators, both lara spencer and roy Banks, you know, they were passionate about the show early on. and then when they brought me on as a host, one of the things was to take advantage not only of just my kind of sense of humor and being a kind of front man for the show, but [figuring out] what would make this show comfortable for me. what would be fun about it? You know, start coming up with ideas and getting involved in it. so, that’s where i kind of, you know, put my producer hat on, looking at the shows overall and not just as an, you know, an opportunity to walk out and be entertaining. But what’s going to make the whole show entertaining. i do that with pretty much everything i get involved in. and so that’s where i kind of put that producer hat on and have those days where i go to work and do the sleeve rollup and i’m real serious, you know. and then i’m cracking jokes the whole time. Since you’re so versatile and you have so many roles in the entertainment industry, which role do you think you would most like to be recognized for? well, i don’t know. i mean, i think that i love standup and then, you know, i really like this opportunity, you know, to develop television. so, you know, i’m looking for the right thing to hit TV with and have a really, you know, important TV show, be it a sitcom or even, you know, the great success of this game show. i would love to just to be the kind of name that people recognize as good, fun, family entertainment but a good time always. You were talking a little bit about revealing the answers to contestants. Do they give you the answers ahead of time or are they

On The shOw, we brOughT OuT a liVe elephanT and [cOmpared] The price Of keeping a liVe elephanT Versus an elephanT-sized diamOnd. and sO, i acTually fed The elephanT an apple. and Then i TaughT The elephanT hOw TO dOugie. giving them to you in your ear? No, i actually don’t get the answers ahead of time. i can get them at what i’d call in the nick of time. so, you know, if it’s necessary for me to know the answer or to say the answer, i can find out. But because we do a kind of a reveal [with] the answers on the board, i’m usually kind of finding out with the people which is, you know, which is fun because, in my own mind, i’m playing along. i do have some advantages of, you know, seeing the products earlier and can on some occasions, find out what’s worth more and what’s the value of a certain thing, but you know, not all of them. we have over $50 million worth of merchandise in the back there. so, i don’t see everything. so, that’s the fun thing for me, is to be playing along. What’s next for you? for me? well, i’m excited about this show. and then i have a development deal with TV land where i’m developing a show where i’m spinning off of hot in cleveland. Do you have any plans to ever return to standup at any point? oh, definitely. i mean i’m out touring now. You know so, i’m out on the road touring and i love the standup. i love that live audience response. it’s the true place when you’re, you know, a comedian, where you can get that reaction without having writers and executive producers and advertisers and all these things that, you know, that you’ve got to comply to. when you do a live standup show, it’s your commentary, the things you’ve been thinking about, and audiences react to it. so, i love that energy. i usually stay pretty busy touring throughout the year. Talk to me about working with Russell Simmons in comedy. for me, one of the great eras of comedy was, you know, those early 90s, when russell brought out def comedy Jam. and it was, you know, an opportunity for, you know, the urban comic to, you know, find a voice, and a voice that was speaking directly to that core african american audience. But the show was so popular that, you know, it was pop culture. and, i mean, that’s russell’s thing, you know, from you know, early on with the innovations of rap music and bringing it out in such a real way with run dmc and the Beastie Boys

and all that. and then too, when he got into the world of television, to be a part of something like that, that was just such a, you know, cultural phenomenon. and then to be able to make stars in people who were great at what they did [was amazing]. we became stars, you know, all of us on the kings of comedy-- me, Bernie mac and steve harvey. guys like chris Tucker [too]. we all have, you know, gone on to have great careers. def comedy Jam was catalyst to that for sure. Recently, you had the release of Larry Crowne, which the critics were brutal toward. Talk about how you rebound from something when the critics don’t like it. This is when you pass the buck. That’s when you go, “You know, that was Tom hanks’ movie. That ain’t got nothing to do with me now.” No, you know, it’s unfortunate because i actually thought it was a very sweet movie. and, you know, it’s a movie of a different time. when you come out against big 3d, you know, a lot of technology in the movie, that’s what these movies are. and people just, you know, may have felt like the movie’s a little sleepy or a little, you know, kind of, slow for that reason. But i thought it was a great story. i thought it fit, you know, what the times were. an amazing cast. [we had] a lot of great actors in there. and we had a ball on the set. i think Tom hanks is one of the best people in hollywood; his personality, his you know, his work ethic, his humor. he’s just a great dude. of course, i wanted the film to do a lot better. when you come out in the middle of summer against Transformers, what are you going to do? Who are you looking at kind of as the people who are the next ones to watch in comedy? i don’t even know if you can put him in the upcoming stage now he’s so hot, but kevin hart, of course, is that guy right now. he’s a super funny young cat. my two protégé’s are great- malik s and J.J. williamson out of atlanta. [They are] very funny young guys who i think should have next. and then, you know, it’s a lot of cats that have some notoriety but still haven’t had that pop- earthquake, deray davis. all these guys i think are really talented comedians and should get an opportunity to be seen at some point in time.

Dragon*Con reaChes silver status as it Celebrates 25 years!

i

t’s hard to believe that a quarter of a century has passed since the indescribable annual pop culture spectacle known as dragon*Con awakened the minds and imaginations of entertainment fans the world over. an event truly unlike any other, dragon*Con draws fans and fanatics from every aspect of science fiction, fantasy, film, television, music, wrestling, costuming, art, comic books, horror and practically every other genre or medium to atlanta for a labor day weekend that would dazzle even the most jaded spectator. have you ever yearned to spot Wonder Woman sharing a cocktail with Papa smurf while enjoying a drum circle where grass skirted Wookies dance with the spartans of “300” fame? this may be the event for you! From humble beginnings in 1987 as a sci-fi and gaming event which drew less than 1000 people, dragon*Con has mushroomed into a behemoth that defies categorization, with an annual attendance of over 40,000 people and a footprint that covers five major downtown atlanta hotels. literally running around the

clock, the show features 35 fan-based tracks spotlighting various aspects of fandom, as well as celebrity autograph signings and massive exhibit halls featuring vendors from across the country. Costumers both amateur and pro flock to this mecca every labor day weekend to strut their stuff and celebrate at what has become the party to be seen at - one unlike any party you’ve ever attended. imagine a mix of equal parts Mardis Gras and disneyland, and you may begin to get an idea of what dragon*Con is all about. there are many things in life which spark the phrase “you have to see it to believe it”. i would hazard a guess that dragon*Con initially inspired those words. Where else could one be serenaded by a troupe of shakespearean Klingons singing traditional folks songs with flutes, lyres and mandolins, or toss change into the intergalactic guitar case of a helmeted darth brooks (or was it Garth vader?) as he belts out a death star-inspired rewrite of “the thunder rolls”? the answer, for the uninitiated, is No Where else! dragon*Con is an ever-changing beast. -by day it’s chock full of fun the whole fami-

ly can enjoy, with celebrity appearances, educational panels, robot battles, exhibit halls, costumes - the list goes on and on. and by night, it’s more of the costumes - lots more but there are also live concerts, parties of all kind, dJ’s spinning into the early morning and the best people watching you could ever hope for. there is not enough film or digital memory available to properly document the marvels of human imagination unleashed at this show. there is absolutely something for everyone at this event, and it is likely that this is the very reason dragon*Con has flourished for so long. there are no outcasts at dragon*Con. Nothing is “uncool” or “not hip enough”. i can honestly say that i have never been anywhere else in my entire life, for any type of event, that i have felt more at home, more embraced by complete strangers than at dragon*Con. it is quite possibly the single largest extended family reunion known to man... simply stated, dragon*Con is an enigma. over the course of the last 25 years it has hosted such notable and diverse personalities as William shatner, leonard Nimoy, Mickey rooney, alice Cooper, timothy leary, stan lee, terry Gilliam, tippi hedren, scott bakula, dean stockwell, and Jefferson starship. outdoing itself in 2011, the event features appearances by film legends ernest borgnine, Carrie Fisher, Christopher lloyd and Martin landau, as well as cast members from true blood, smallville, supernatural, vampire diaries, start trek, star Wars and buffy the vampire slayer.

if you’ve not taken the opportunity in the past 25 years, you owe it to yourself to make a point of coming out this labor day weekend for an anniversary celebration that’ll make your parents’ silver anniversary dinner look like a trip to the anesthesiologist.

Jumanji did some pretty cool things with lions and elephants stomping through a town, but it missed the mark a bit in full-fledged authenticity. And even though Jurrasic Park was nearly seamless in its blur between the Mesozoic and Super Nintendo eras, the island setting felt too distant. With Rise, everything comes together brilliantly in the present day. Over the cinematic adrenaline rush, you’ll wonder if you’re watching classically trained creatures on stage or merely 22nd century CGI magic. One thing you won’t wonder about, however, is man’s arrogance and the repercussions of it. Both are on full display. In this reboot of the famed ’60-70s movie series, a scientist (James Franco) is in a race against time to find a cure for brain disorders. Results of his work are astounding, especially on an ape named Caesar. He understands sign language, he gestures with his eyes and he hates the wise-ass neighbor just like you might. But man, are there some unpleasant side effects to animals holding forks and humans playing with nature. Over time, in fact, a loving, playful Caesar evolves into a cunning, calculating chimp with a chip. The city of San Francisco gets the short end of this pissed-off primate’s actions. white opinions we have about adults as children become shades of grey as we enter into maturity.” Harry, Ron and Hermione remain honest, open characters we can trust, but the world beyond them is far more complex than when they first entered Hogwarts. The film’s revelatory scene and action set pieces have emotional weight not only due to their content, but because director David Yates has shown himself to be a master of montage. We see a prominent character’s entire backstory in the span of 10 minutes, and the result is a heart-wrenching scene buoyed by an amazing performance from Alan Rickman. I keep talking around plot point specifics to avoid spoilers, but Part 2 is filled with death and I don’t want to ruin the impact for those who haven’t read the books. What I can talk about in a less obtuse manner are the film’s triumphs. The visuals are astounding; editor Mark Day helps pull together exhilarating set pieces; and the actors deserve great credit for defining these characters. Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows Part 2 is the grandest of finales. It works in hope, love, loss, death, destruction, thrills, and triumph, and does so more efficiently and powerfully than any other film in the series. It’s an emotionally powerful, uplifting, beautiful conclusion to a wonderful series. – Matt Goldberg

THE HELP (PG-13)

««««« It’s time to send doubt packing, and not because Viola Davis has a new Oscar-worthy role on her hands, but because those anxious feelings that arise when your favorite book becomes a movie have no place with The Help. Based on the novel by Atlanta’s own Kathryn Stockett, Director Tate Taylor’s adaptation is a deeply insightful, richly moving account of the maid to boss-lady relationship in 1960s Jackson, Mississippi. But not just any generic third-person perspective— the story here is from the “help” themselves, told cautiously and emotionally, in fear but out of desperation for change. The film reveals more than one perspective of white-American domesticity and the hired help, proving that black and white wasn’t the only clash happening in the country, but that it’s character ran much deeper. It also mystifies with its illustration of a society ignorantly isolated from the rest of the modernizing world. Expect a stellar story told through poignant performances from a shoe-in for Oscar season, Viola Davis, a scenestealing riot from Octavia Spencer, a riveting ice-cold Bryce Dallas Howard and another sturdy performance by young Hollywood constant, Emma Stone. Bring your tissues, expect a heavy heart, and torturous moral questions, but rest assured you will never feel such a sense of hope and inspiration for what humanity can be—using a little “help” from historical fiction to remind us of our roots. – Jenni Williams

HORRIBLE BOSSES (R)

««««« The funniest dark comedy since Death at a Funeral (the original, not the American remake, although that wasn’t bad), Horrible Bosses manages to be totally outrageous while keeping one toe far enough in reality to make you root for the protagonists. Each of three friends has a horrible boss and a reason, besides the economy, why he can’t leave his job. Jason Bateman is overworked, mistreated and robbed of a promotion by Kevin Spacey. Jason Sudeikis has a good boss (Donald Sutherland), who dies, leaving the business to be trashed by his cokehead son, Colin Farrell. Charlie Day would seem to be in an enviable position, being sexually harassed by his boss, dentist Jennifer Aniston, except she molests her patients too and Charlie just got engaged. Once the guys decide the only way out is to murder their bosses, they go looking for a hit man and wind up hiring Jamie Foxx as a murder consultant. (He’s black so they figure he must know what he’s talking about.) If things went smoothly this would be a horrible movie, but fear not: they go PG 14 • insiteatlanta.com • August 2011

hilariously awry, thanks to one of the year’s best screenplays. – Steve Warren

POINT BLANK (N/R)

««««« Point Blank could have been a routine action thriller but, like Taken and The Transporter, it overachieves. It gets into gear in the first five seconds and rarely coasts in neutral after that, which is wise because director and co-writer Fred Cavayé can’t give you time to think about the implausibilities and absurdities in the plot. Constant balls-to-the-wall action prevents that. After the initial chase scene that sends one man to the hospital we meet Samuel (Gilles Lellouche) and his very pregnant wife Nadia (Elena Anaya). At work Samuel, a nurse’s aide, saves the chase victim, Sartet (Roschdy Zem), after a murder attempt. At home Samuel is knocked out and Nadia kidnapped. Samuel is told to get Sartet out of the hospital, where police are guarding him because he’s a murder suspect, or Nadia will die. Adapting quickly from an average guy into an action hero, Samuel complies and the chase is on, from Metro station to police station and hospital to cold storage warehouse. Two police squads are at war with each other and unlikely alliances are formed to fight an unexpected enemy. There are enough twists – from the early death of a major character to a crime wave that erupts spontaneously all over Paris – that you’ll never relax until it’s over, and you probably won’t realize you’ve been reading subtitles. – Steve Warren

THE SMURFS (PG)

««««« While fans of the ‘80s TV show will be eager to take their offspring to the big-screen version, the kids will probably enjoy it more than they do. The dialogue throws an occasional bone to grown-ups (e.g., a Brokeback Mountain reference during the credits) and there’s a running theme about how great it is to be a dad, but overall there’s very little to interest anyone whose age is in double digits. As in the Alvin and the Chipmunks movies, the main characters are computer-generated but sometimes interact with live actors. The blue critters are menaced by evil Gargamel (Hank Azaria, overacting, even for a cartoon villain) in Smurf Village. Six of them escape, followed by Gargamel and his cat, through a portal that lands them in New York. There they take up residence with workaholic marketing man Neil Patrick Harris, who hardly has time for his pregnant wife (Jayma Mays of Glee) because a promotion is riding on pleasing a tough client (Sofia Vergara, wasted). Will the Smurfs help him succeed? Will they find their way home? Will there be a sequel? If you can’t guess the answers, you may be young enough to see The Smurfs. No movie in years has left me so thoroughly smurfed. – Steve Warren

30 MINUTES OR LESS (R)

««««« A stoner comedy without drugs, 30 Minutes or Less proves you can’t fix stupid, but you can make it hilarious! At least director Ruben Fleischer can. He’s reunited with his Zombieland star, Jesse Eisenberg, in a comedy about four guys whose collective IQ wouldn’t break triple digits. Nick (Eisenberg), a pizza delivery guy, is dating the twin sister of his best friend Chet (Aziz Ansari). Dwayne (Danny McBride) is a slacker who decides to order a hit on his lottery-rich, retired Marine father (Fred Ward). First he and his pal Travis (Nick Swardson) order a pizza, strap a bomb to Nick’s chest and give him ten hours to steal $100,000 from a bank or they’ll detonate it remotely. Under the circumstances you’d think the stress would make it hard for everyone to think straight, but that’s giving them credit for being able to think at all. If this sounds like the kind of comedy that’s beneath you, give it a chance and you’ll find it a great stress-buster. And wait through the credits for an extra scene! – Steve Warren

New Kids ON The BlOcK

A Q&A with Attack the Block’s John Boyega By Jenni Williams

B

y this time, no matter your age, you’ve seen and read anything and everything there is to read and see about humans fighting off aliens. you’ve seen every special effect in the book to make it real and frightening and you’ve recycled your emotions incessantly to watch the same sidebar story bring out the best in humanity. so what incentive do you have to do it again? especially when it’s not the latest spielberg brainchild? two words – John Boyega. ok, maybe two more – Joe Cornish. This undeniable duo produces a surprisingly witty story of inner city kids who pick one wrong fight and end up having to save the neighborhood from violent alien wolves with nothing bu firecrackers and a bad reputation. yes, it’s a story about kids and aliens (which spielberg actually just did) and yes, it tells a story of greater humanity (which spielberg also just did), but attack the Block (out in select theatres this august) does it in an entirely different way. and insite got to sit down with first-time protagonist, John Boyega for an intimate look at how. So John, your first film is all said and done. What did you think of it? Well, i am very proud of it. i am glad that this was my first film and that it turned out to be so amazing. i am excited to see how well it does. it’s one of those films that will be talked about for a long time. its DVD life will be forever. Do you think viewers will say the same thing? i hope so. i just hope they have fun with it. The film is a great time, so i want audiences to have a great time watching it. i hope they love it. Your character makes a hobby out of terrorizing the neighbors. What is your opinion of the violent message this film sends to teens? Well, to start i think it sends a message to humanity overall, no matter what age you are. i think it shows that everybody has a choice, you know? you have the good and you have the bad, but given the circumstances of a situation, you don’t know people, don’t know their story or where they came from, so you can’t really judge them for their decisions. i think it sends a message to everyone to be careful in their judgment. you never know who the hero is going to be. Your crew seems to interact so fluidly with each to all be first-timers. Was any of it off the cuff? no, it really was all from the script. We had a brilliant writer in Joe Cornish. and it was brilliant casting. They really made sure we were hired to have good chemistry with each other. none of us had ever met before and now we’re the best of friends. i guess eventually, it just shows. So, Spielberg just did a movie about kids and aliens… Why is this movie different from it or any other teen angst movie? This one is based entirely on different characters. you’ve seen normal people fighting aliens, you’ve seen the government fighting aliens, but you have never

seen urban, inner city kids fighting aliens. Plus, it’s a little bit of everything. you’ve got an action-packed, horror, comedy and drama all in this movie. and, you’ve got a group of kids with limited weapons, relying on their creativity and wit. i loved seeing how they used this limited supply. i mean, they were running at aliens with baseball bats and firecrackers. We’re curious to know what were those aliens like in real life? Or was it all special effects? They were actually much more detailed in real life… it was a guy in a costume, so what you see we saw, only with more to it. no green screens or anything. it was very cool and the first time i had worked with anything like that. you think he’s just a guy in a costume, but he was brilliant. And how do you work with something like that day in and day out, and do such a good job of being terrified of it on screen? Well, that’s just good acting, you know? How early did you have to start to be such a good actor from Peckham? Well, i am 19 years old now and i’ve been a professional for about 2. But, i started acting in plays in primary school, participated in youth groups in town and local plays. eventually, i got into drama school where i attend two days a week and work the remainder of the week. Why do you enjoy it so much? i love creating different characters and pretending to be those characters in order to tell a story to an audience. i love making them believe your story and watching them get into it. Who do you want to work with the most? spielberg! And whether or not that happens, what do you want to be doing in 5 years? Well, i want to be acting. it’s not based on experience, to know what you want. your ambition is as the individual. i want to do all kinds of roles and movies. i’ve been lucky to start off this way. How are you preparing for that role now? reading a lot of scripts. it’s been crazy. i want to make sure i have time to make the right decisions about what i’ll do next. i’m lucky to have a very supportive family back home and i have god to point me in the right direction. How are you handling being in Hollywood as a 19 year old? Are you digging all the attention? it’s normal, really. everyone is just a human being. i am not star struck by them. i just want to soak up their wisdom and learn from their ability. i don’t want to waste time being star struck. i don’t really think too much about all of the attention. it’s not about that. But you’ve got to have some favorite movies? The best i’ve seen recently is a Prophet, but i also liked transformers and super 8.

Author KAthryn StocKett FAceS the GhoSt oF MiSSiSSippi’S pASt in Her Novel and New Movie, The Help By marci miller

orn and raised in Mississippi, Kathryn stockett, author of the new York Times best-selling novel, THe HeLp, drew her story from her own childhood and experiences with demitri, her grandmother’s beloved maid. as Kathryn was raised by a single mother, demitri often stepped in to give Kathryn the attention and affirmation she desperately needed. although Kathryn was raised in the seventies, a later era from when THe HeLp takes place, many remnants of the segregated south remained; including an outside bathroom that Kathryn didn’t realize was to only be used by demitri. now living in atlanta, Kathryn stockett is experiencing a whirlwind of success as her novel makes its way to the big screen this august. We recently had a chance to sit down with her to talk about the story behind THe HeLp. Explain your relationship to your “help” growing up in Mississippi. demetri worked for my grandmother for 32 years, so there was a very hierarchal set up there. demetri was an amazing woman, she ran a tight ship. she grew up in shanghai, so she understood class and boundaries. i had a very unique relationship with her because my mom worked, she was single and i would get dumped off at my grandmother’s house after school. My brothers and sisters were older, so it would be me and demetri in the house and she would stand me in front of this big wardrobe mirror, it was in the kitchen, and that was where demetri always was… in that kitchen. and she would say “Look at you, you are so beautiful.” and i was not. i was the dorkiest looking four-eyed kid. i was strangely short and i never brushed my teeth. But she would just say, “Look at yourself, you’re worth something.” and that was the message that kept running in my head when i first started writing in her voice. she had no children of her own, but if you asked her how many children she had, she would say three; myself, my brother and my sister. she was just an amazing, generous person. What do you think is the moral of this story? Look, you’ll never read anything that i write that has a moral to it. if ya’ll know me, i am a dirty, sick-minded…it’s not my role in life to try to teach anybody a lesson. if you’ve all known the routes that i’ve taken in life, the wrong turns i’ve made…and i don’t want to read something where someone is trying to teach me a lesson. i’m just glad that people are talking about this topic of race and relationships and bringing up a part of history that seems to have somehow been forgotten. and i never wanted to try to act like i was representing the entire black race of Mississippi in 1963. it was a very small population; a bubble that was affected by class. i wanted it to be on paper and i wanted people to look back on it and think about it and see how ridiculous some of those rules were. Do you think Hilly ever learned her lesson when it came to integration? no. i think Hilly is going to be fighting that demon her entire life until she dies. she’s that self-centered. she is just sick. and we know people really exist like that in the world. They are not everywhere. They are not as common as they are in literature and movies, but those are the people that always want to create the conflict. They are so immersed in what they believe in.

When you were writing the book, did you ever think that it would be as popular as it has become? i couldn’t get anybody to read it! i had 60 rejections. number 61 was the agent that finally took me. How did you end up in Atlanta? i was in new York for 16 years. i was in magazine publishing and one day in our apartment on the Upper West side, my daughter Lila was in the bathtub, the nanny was reaching over giving her a bath, i’m at the sink and my husband is on the toilet…all four us in that same room. and i was like we have to get a bigger apartment; we have to get a second bathroom. and so we examined our situation and decided that if we needed to have a bit more room, we needed to move outside of new York City. so we moved to atlanta and funny enough, we bought a house where we are all still using the same bathroom. except now he’s using the bathroom down the street (Kathryn disclosed during the interview that she and her husband have recently divorced). So much of “The Help”centers on the black maids not using the same bathroom as their white employers, is that how it really was? in my grandmother’s house, there was a door out on the side of the house. i never wondered what it was. i thought it was a storeroom or something. i still to this day have never been in there. i know i should go in there and face my demons. i guess that’s why i’m sensitive to that phrase “like family” (referring to her maid as being part of the family) because that is absolutely what i thought when i started writing this story. Then i realized that demitri knew everything about us, but we knew so little about her. We knew she went to church, we knew where she bought her groceries, but we really didn’t know … like the line that director Tate Taylor put in the movie, “nobody knows what it feels like to be me.” i wish i wrote that line.

FILM

JESSICA ALBA TAKES ON THE ROLE OF... Mom in Real Life and on Screen J By MarcI MILLer

essica alba is a busy, working mom. she is mother to Honour, an active three year old child, and now has another one on the way. This Hollywood actress has come a long way from when she first achieved worldwide recognition as the lead character in James cameron’s Dark angel who went on to star in such Hollywood hits as Honey, sin city and the Fantastic Four franchise. and now, alba takes on a role she is quite familiar with, a mom. but unlike real life, in her new film, sPy KiDs: all THe TiMe iN THe WORlD, she plays a spy mom who is trying to save the world while having a baby strapped to her because she doesn’t have a sitter. Her character, Marissa cortez Wilson, is married, has a new baby and is raising two stepkids who clearly don’t want her around. she is also battling the maniacal Timekeeper (Jeremy Piven) who is threatening to take over the planet. When director Robert Rodriguez approached alba about wanting to make her into a spy mom, she shared with him what she wanted that character to embody. alba recalls telling him, “i wanted to see a modern mom. someone who is trying to work and deal with family but isn’t a nagging, dowdy woman. someone trying to hang onto her own identity while trying to be the best mom she can be and kind of struggling with both.” it was important to alba to have her character rooted in reality. “i think a lot of women want to relate to characters they see on the big screen. even though Marissa is a cool spy chick, she’s not great at everything but she’s trying to be a good mom,” she says. We recently had the chance to speak to Jessica alba about her new movie role, balancing work and family, and she even breaks down what it means to see the movie in “4D.” Has having children changed the way you choose movie roles and if so, how?

it’s changed the way that i look at roles. i have to be really excited about the time i am spending away from my family, so it has to be worth it. so, i’m meeting with great artists and finding material that inspires me.

What similarities are there between your parenting style and your character in the movie? she fumbles around a lot more and has a lot more on her plate because she has two step kids that don’t really like her that much and are critical of her. so i think that must be hard and can make you nervous if you constantly have to answer to two kids that are not happy that you are with their dad, along with bringing in a new baby to the family. she has to deal with a lot more and she’s hiding that she is a spy. luckily, i don’t have to hide anything from my family and i don’t have two kids that hate me, so it’s easier for me to make mistakes and figure it out as i go. What was your favorite scene to film in the movie? i like the scenes where i am going into labor and hiding that i am a spy…my husband thinks i am an interior decorator. so i go into labor while i am on my last mission and that was fun. i got to do a little bit of action, which i hadn’t done since Dark angel and there was also a little bit of comedy where i have contractions during the sequence so that was just funny and fun to play. How does it feel to have made your first 4D film and what can we expect to experience from it? Well, we didn’t really know it was going to be 4D when we were shooting it. That sort of came after the fact. i think it’s really a great, a really fun element to add to the film for kids. it’s a kid’s movie, and as we all know, our kids are use to interacting with entertainment, especially with their iphones and their ipads. so this is for that next generation kid and they can participate in the film in a way that they never could before. eight times during the film there is a number that pops up and there is a scratch and sniff card. and kids can scratch and smell what we’re smelling and feel like they are even more part of the experience. When you were filming the movie, did you take your daughter on set? Most of the sets were not safe for kids to be on except for the home, so she hung out in my trailer. it’s a pretty nice set up. We’d have lunch together and we had a room where i took the bed out and set up a playroom for her. and my apartment wasn’t far. so she would play there and come back and see me. it’s what i’ve been doing since she was 4 months old. What are some of ways you balance work and motherhood? i don’t work as much as i used to, so that’s helped me to prioritize my time. My husband and i have made an agreement that when we are with my daughter that it’s pure family time, so no blackberries, no texting, really trying to give her as much attention as humanly possible.

PG 18 • insiteatlanta.com • August 2011

I don’t work as Much as I used to, so that’s heLped Me to prIorItIze My tIMe. My husBand and I have Made an agreeMent that when we are wIth My daughter that It’s pure FaMILy tIMe, so no BLackBerrIes, no textIng, reaLLy tryIng to gIve her as Much attentIon as huManLy possIBLe.

Who in your life has inspired you to be a good mom? Well my mother and my grandmother were my examples growing up and they always made us kids feel like we were the priority. No matter if they were working or busy. My mom would have three jobs sometimes but always managed to make my brother and i feel like we were number one in her life and doing everything for us. so, i think whether you have a job where you can stay at home or if you have to be away and travel a lot, just take the time to check in with your kids and constantly remind them that they are a priority. How has your style evolved? i’m pretty conservative. i’ve never been someone that lets it all hang out, and when i was younger, i would dress sort of tomboyish. and after i had my daughter, i am a little bit more daring with fashion. i never wore shorts or a skirt that went above my knee before i was 27, i wasn’t comfortable with it. but now that i had my daughter, i’m like, you know what, i had a kid, its fine. life is short. Did you learn anything from the child actors you worked with on set that could influence you with how you raise your own children? actor kids are so smart and so advance. The conversations we had, i was like, who are you? How do you know all this information? i’m overwhelmed with the idea of my daughter getting any older. Three is

enough for me…i think your prepared for what is happening right then in their lives. When i think about having teenage girls, i have a panic attack. i wouldn’t even know where to begin. i think i am prepared to deal with what’s happening in this moment, right now and that’s kind of it. How did you transition from being a child star to a full fledged movie star? i think that as far as the transition goes, i started when i was 12. and i didn’t have the exposure…people didn’t really know who i was until i was an adult when i was in Dark angel, so i think that really helped. If your children wanted to get into the business, would you encourage or discourage them? after they are done with college, they can do what ever they want. i will support them. i want them to have the luxury of spending time to get an education and grow up differently than i did. and if they want to get into the arts, the more life experience they have the more they will have to bring to their work. How do you get it all done when there is only so much time in the day? i just try to live in the moment as much as possible. i find that when i try not to live for tomorrow and what’s going to come and am enjoying what’s happening right now, i feel like that is my best day.

Road Warriors

This Month’s Hottest Shows By sAchA DzuBA

Aug. 7 – goo goo Dolls w/ Michelle BrAnch

Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre The Goo Goo Dolls dominated 90’s radio with hits such as “Iris”, “Slide” and “Black Balloon”. Heck, I can remember taking a whole day, determined to figure out how to play, and then perform “Slide” as a surprise for someone’s birthday. Supporting their latest release, Something for the Rest of Us, Johnny Rzeznik confronts many current-event issues. He was determind to create music that would voice the emotional uncertainty and disillusionment that defines many of our lives in the world today. Likely to be a sing-a-long blend of well-known songs, hits, and showcased songs from their latest release, the Goos are joined by pop/rock/country artist Michelle Branch, supporting West Coast Time. A great night of well crafted music that should bring back and create some beautiful memories.

Aug. 12 - BelA Fleck & the Flecktones / Bruce hornsBy & the noiseMAkers

Chastain Park Amphitheatre Bela Fleck and Bruce Hornsby are two consummate musicians that freely draw from elements of a diverse range of music. From bluegrass and folk music, to Motown and rock, as well as classical and jazz. Bela Fleck is considered by those who know him as the premier banjo player in the world and through a remarkable performing and recording career has reinvented the sound and image

of the banjo. His music with the Flecktones is reflective of Jazz/Fusion, but don’t be fooled, this sublime performer will take you to places you never thought a banjo could go. Along with a creative, multi-talented and genre hopping performance by Bruce Hornsby, this is sure to be a yummy eclectic gumbo evening of improvisation, virtuosic, and jam-based grooves.

Aug. 14 – inXs w/ nikki costA

Chastain Park Amphitheatre INXS are bringing their Original Sin Tour to Georgia. This Australian rock band, hit the wave of their popularity in the 80’s and 90’s. Their hugely charismatic and charming frontman, Michael Hutchence, adorned many a female fan’s bedroom wall. With the death of Hutchence and due to his prominence as a frontman, the aftershock for the band was staggering. They bounced back to create the reality show, Rock Star: INXS, to search for a new lead vocalist. J.D. Fortune was the winner and toured with INXS as a result. Fortune is now back, touring with the band to support INSX’s latest album, Original Sin, which found the group reworking their hits with a variety of singers, including Fortune, in tribute to Hutchence. Expect to also hear a little new material from their upcoming album The Point of a View. They will, no doubt, also be armed with some new takes on old songs and you’re sure to hear plenty of crowd pleasing 80’s and 90’s hits that you’ll recognize, “Original Sin”, “New Sensation”, and “Never Tear Us Apart”. Joined by swanky, sultry, funk/soulstress Nikki Costa, they need you, tonight.

Aug. 19 – Jill scott AnD FrienDs: suMMer Block PArty

Chastain Park Amphitheatre Philadelphia neo-soul singer, Jill Scott, brings exactly what the tour name implies, a block party of musicians,

to Chastain. Along with her are collaborators, DJ Jazzy Jeff (yes…the one from Fresh Prince days), Doug E. Fresh, and old-soul crooner Anthony Hamilton. Jill Scott says her Summer Block Party tour will be exactly what its name implies. Scott’s latest album, The Light of the Sun, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart last month, so she’s certainly in the mood to celebrate. Expect a large sampling of her latest and greatest, as well as other tunes from her album catalog. There will be some DJ spun sets to enhance the block party vibe to this jazz-tinged, hiphop, R&B, Soul-stravaganza.

Aug. 26 – kAMelot: PAnDeMoniuM over north AMericA w/ AlestorM

The Masquerade Atlanta is Kamelot’s first stop on their Pandemonium Over North America Tour! Melodic power and epically progressive metal with buzz-saw guitars is what Kamelot is known for. You can hear some Helloween and Iron Maiden influence in the shredding/thrash w/ melodic overtones sound of Hammerfall. Since they’re supporting their latest release, Poetry for the Poisoned, I feel kinda wrong for wanting to hear their cover of “My Sharona” live. If you like your metal with accordions and a little tongue-in-pierced-cheek humor, the you’ll be thrilled to discover Alestorm. They’re sure to fill your flagon with the finest Pirate Metal Ale. Metal horns required!

Aug. 28 – kiD rock AnD sheryl crow

Aaron’s Amphitheatre at Lakewood Self-proclaimed American Badass, Kid Rock, and the ever lovely and talented, Sheryl Crow, are performing, together, on the Born Free Tour. It seems like a Matrix sized leap to me that the Rap-Rock of Kid Rock would blend with the Country Rock of Sheryl Crow; but like the tastes of chocolate and peanut butter… It’s not like they haven’t worked together before, 2007’s hit song “Picture” saw them collaborating, along with 2010’s “Collide”. Kid Rock’s musical genre hopping throughout his career assures that “If there’s something you don’t like, just wait four minutes until the next song and we’ll be in another genre. “ This tour sees both musicians performing numerous crowd pleasing hits for their audiences, cover songs, and duets. This is sure to be a surprisingly tasty, yummy show from two engaging performers. Pass the Reece’s.

Aug. 31 – MAn or Astro-MAn?

The Earl I have a great concert memory of getting to see Man or Astro-Man? at the old Cotton Club for Halloween. This fantastic space/surf rock band with a punk rock vibe always has incredible live performances with lots of hi-tech eye candy. They do a great cover of the Mystery Science Theater 3000 theme song, though most of their songs are instrumental, per surf rock standards. They have been on an extended hiatus since 2001 and though there have been a very select few performances since 2006, it seems that the Astromen are back in full force. Look out for burning televisions and space helmets, Theremins, and Tesla Coils! High-Voltage Excitement!

sePt. 2 – JonAthAn coulton

Variety Playhouse JoCo comes back to Atlanta in time for Dragon Con, bringing a night of humorous and clever geeky sub/popculturesongsfullofwitandquirkiness.Checkoutthevideos online for “Code Monkey” and “Re: Your Brains” to get an idea what you’ve been missing. You can also find much of his music available for free online through his website. This man also brought us the excellent ending song for the video game, “Portal”. Using subjects as diverse as science fiction, technology, bored clowns, and giant squids; you will find yourself laughing and rushing this charming performer at the end of his show to sign your Ikea catalogs. The cake may indeed be a lie, but Coulton is the real deal.

sePt. 3 – erAsure

Center Stage Synth-pop superstars, Erasure, are touring in support of their new album, Tommorw’s World! Their coming back to the states for their first US tour in five years. With current musical trends more steadily to embrace the synth-pop sound of the 80’s, Erasure is more musically relevant than ever. They even began the Abba revival with their EP Abba-esque. Lady Gaga fans are sure to discover “new” hits to enjoy. Ther show will encompass songs from all through their long career, including new songs from their latest release. It will be impossible to stop dancing like you’re at an 80’s night when the parade of hits such as “Ship of Fools”, “Breathe”, “A Little Respect”, and “Chains of Love” start coming in waves. A welcome return by the definitive synthpop superstars.

That may be insignificant to younger athenians or unbelievable to those who frequented the legendary music venue, but this month, the Theatre will be empty no more. starting august 1, more than two years after a fire gutted the 122 year-old building, The Theatre will host two weeks of opening celebrations, featuring artists from southern-rockers The Drive-by truckers to atlanta hip hop artist Big Boi, bluegrass master Bela Fleck to local indie rockers The Glands. iNsite spoke with wilmot Greene, owner of the Theatre since 2004, on the struggles of the past two years, rebuilding the club he had performed and seen shows in for years, and the future of one of Georgia’s most important mid-sized music venues. What have the past two years been like, after the fire? well, we had a lot of challenges. after the fire, the roof trusses were charred and not supporting the walls anymore. you don’t think about the fact that the roof actually holds up the walls, but it does. so there was a month or two where if the wind had blown strong enough it would’ve actually knocked the walls down. we had to temporarily shore up the walls and remove the charred trusses... i’ve been telling people it was like the Jenga from hell. What was it like to redesign a club that you not only owned for five years, but in which you had seen and performed shows? it was an interesting process because we focused so hard and spent so much time and energy on maintaining the same feel of the Georgia Theatre. My architects some days would say, “why are you putting that there? it goes better over here.” and i’d say, “well, because that’s where it used to be.” so there was a whole lot give and take with making it new and safe and modern but also keeping it familiar. i was in a lucky position as an owner that had been here so many times and for so many years that i really had a good sense of what it needed to be like for the audience as well as bands and staff.

Could you give me a quick run down of the new features? in the basement, we greatly improved the bathrooms the are much larger and more accessible now. The auditorium is just a big old, loud, open concrete space like it was before, with curtains and a stage and two bars. a bar was added to the balcony and it’s much better than the original balcony, which was just kind of old and creaky. There is now there is a rooftop cafe and restaurant on top of the building that’s amazing. one of the great things about having a rooftop is open air cafe. so it was a great addition.

How did you go about picking bands that you wanted to play that first week? we talked about having a grand opening, like, one show, but the Georgia Theatre was always known for doing so many different types of music, so what would we have booked? should we book an indie band or a jam band or a country band or a dj/electronica band? so we just decided to do all of the above. if you look at our schedule the first two weeks a great variety of styles are represented... the idea was to do a little something for everyone those first two weeks, and i think we did a good job of pulling that off. Do you think the vibe of the club will be more or less the same? yeah, i was really concerned about that, but i had somebody walk in here the other day, an old friend of mine. he was like, “it’s crazy that it’s so new and so modern, yet it’s so the Georgia Theatre.” it was cool to have someone from the outside looking in tell me that that’s the vibe they got, because that’s exactly what we were trying to do. What do you think the reopening means for Athens, Georgia, and the Southeast? i like to think that we’ll be able to attract some bands down here and anchor some tours. and that means good shows for Greenville, for Chattanooga, for atlanta, tuscaloosa, auburn... we want to work with promoters in these other towns and make sure that when a band is touring that they don’t forget the southeast.

on a smaller scale, we hope that it sparks the whole athens economy... i’m going to employ probably sixty or seventy people, that’s a good start, and hopefully the local hotels will get some action from it, as well as the local bars, restaurants and clothing stores. After a really tough couple of years punctuated by two weeks of opening celebrations, how are you feeling about the future of the Georgia Theatre? i think that the future of the Georgia Theatre, i tell you, once you walk in this room it’s impossible to not be excited. They just don’t build’em like this anymore, and we were in really unique position to be able to have a historic club and a brand new club at the same time. i just think people are gonna love it... i just think it’s gonna work, ‘cause it’s just too awesome to not work. Album Reviews Reviews by John Moore and Jon Latham

PAUL SIMON – PAUL SIMON; THERE GOES RHYMIN’ SIMON; STILL CRAZY AFTER ALL THESE YEARS; IN CONCERT LIVE RHYMIN (Columbia/Legacy) Simon’s early solo work finally gets the deluxe treatment JM: Ever wonder who was the most pissed off guy in the 70’s? My money is on Art Garfunkel. Simon & Garfunkel had just left the 60’s behind with a few Grammys and a number of stellar songs on their resume. After calling it quits, Paul Simon takes a year or two off and comes out with his eponymous debut, crammed with soon-to-be classics like “Mother and Child Reunion,” “Me and Julio Down By the Schoolyard” and “Duncan,” meanwhile Garfunkel settles into his role as punchline to a slew of jokes for the next few decades, while sitting by the phone waiting for the occasional invitation from Simon for a reunion tour. Legacy has decided to re-release Simon’s back catalog, beginning with his first four efforts, each remastered and complete with previously unreleased bonus tracks. This first installment is like manna from Heaven and we haven’t even gotten to Graceland yet. There Goes Rhymin’ Simon includes “Something So Right,” “Love Me Like a Rock,” St. Judy’s Comet,” and “Take Me to the Mardi Gras,” while Still Crazy… features the title track, “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover,” “Have a Good Time” and “My Little Town,” proving it wasn’t in his nature to go on autopilot and churn out a weak record. The live album even includes a couple of previously unreleased tracks like a stellar version of “Something So Right.” So, um, what’s Garfunkel been up to lately? ELIOT BRONSON – BLACKBIRDS (Self-Released) Glad to see a brother like him go solo BL: From the Indigo Girls and Michelle Malone to John Mayer and Shawn Mullins, Atlanta has had an impressive singersongwriter scene for decades. A few years ago, critics pegged the Brilliant Inventions– the duo of Eliot Bronson and Josh Lamkin– as the Next Big Thing for Atlanta’s folk-rock scene. Frequently dubbed “the Indigo Boys” for their tight vocal harmonies, two-guitar songwriting and engaging stage presence, the duo was voted Best New Local Musical Act in Creative Loafing’s 2008 Reader’s Poll, won the Open Mic Shootout at Eddie’s Attic (twice), and earned opening slots on tours with They Might Be Giants and Jump Little Children. But a funny thing happened on the way to the top: At some point after the release of their 2009 album Have You Changed, Lamkin decided the life of a touring artist wasn’t for him, leaving the more career-focused Bronson to start over from scratch. If Blackbirds, his debut solo LP, is any indication, it was the best thing that could’ve happened to him. While the Brilliant Inventions’ songwriting was always strong, the yin-yang between Lamkin’s playful sense of humor and Bronson’s more earnest emotionalism didn’t always mesh. Here, the simple-boy-with-simple-needs ballad “Old Car” flows into the infectious country-rock anthem “If You Need To Be Free” seamlessly, PG 20 • insiteatlanta.com • August 2011

The Dean’s List

with background vocals from Leah Calvert and instrumentalist/producer Will Robertson giving it a richness that seems primed for radio play. From the pastoral loveliness of “This Song” and the heart-on-his-sleeve yearning of “You’re Always Saying Goodbye” to the hauntingly orchestrated “Christmas Song,” Blackbirds proves Bronson a formidable talent in his own right, ready for the big time all by his damn self. YOUNG ANTIQUES – A MAN, NOT A BIOGRAPHY (Two Sheds Music) Reclaiming Atlanta for Rock and Roll JL: Mixing the passionate delivery of the Clash, the beer-soaked glory of the Replacements, and the popsavvy writing of “Surrender”-era Cheap Trick, Atlanta’s own Young Antiques deliver a fresh brand of nononsense bar rock. On stage, it is an onslaught of raucous energy from the local trio, and with their latest release ‘A Man, Not A Biography’, the stakes are raised high in studio, as well. Any band would aim to prove themselves as a worthy voice to emerge from the crowd, but the Antiques take it a step further, confidently waving the flag on behalf of the ATL’s much-needed, often-overlooked rock resurgence as of late. Don’t expect the polish of 2008’s Soundtrack to Tear Us Apart. In its stead is a mix more indicative of the band’s natural live sound. “Come On Let These Girl Blues Go” and “Biography” offer up rock songwriting that stands shoulder to shoulder with output from national acts such as the Hold Steady. “Daydream Fields,” the album’s centerpiece, is an angst-filled dirge of sorts, with vocalist/writer/guitarist Blake Rainey lamenting, “There’s no more work, I can’t go back to school/ But that’s not what I miss so much.” Cars-influenced synth work pulses through Supermodel. Atlanta hideouts like El Myr and the Yacht Club get the Springsteen icon treatment in the lyrics of the feel-good “Fucked Up In Public”. Don’t be so naïve as to believe it doesn’t work like a charm in this setting. For being, in some peoples minds, quite the music industry town, the landscape of great rock bands tends to keep out of reach of any radar regarding the public-at-large. In the case of the Young Antiques, the influences they wear on their sleeve serves as a jumping-off point, not a mask to hide behind. This type of headstrong movement on the part of the band speaks worlds of their potential. Wherever this takes the Antiques next, it is safe to say that they make Atlanta proud. BODEANS – INDIGO DREAMS (Oar Fin) Veteran roots rockers show they’ve still got it JM: Sadly, for a slew of Americans The BoDeans will always be known as the guys who sing over the opening credits of “Party of Five”. For the uninitiated, Indigo Dreams, the band’s 10th record, shows exactly why The BoDeans were/are one of the best modern roots-based rock bands going. While not their best (that distinction goes to either Home or Go Slow Down, I’ll let the diehards fight it out),

this latest effort is still a solid record, crammed with the beautiful harmonies and the earnest lyrics that made the band stand out from all the other roots rockers that crowded the scene in the late 80’s and throughout the 90’s. The band has thankfully never tempered their songs to whatever the flavor of the month happens to be. Newer songs like “Way Down” and “Sad Eyes” sound like they could have come off the band’s debut back in 1986. The band took some time off between the mid90’s and 2006, but has gained the momentum back again. Indigo Dreams comes just a little over a year after the release of Mr. Sad Clown. The BoDeans may always be remembered for that schmaltzy 90’s TV show, but thankfully the band has not given up trying to change people’s minds by turning in one great album after another.

Rest of the Class SONNY AND THE SUNSETS – HIT AFTER HIT (Fat Possum) Thanks to this CA band, summer can officially begin JM: With influences as varied as The Modern Lovers, 60’s garage rock and, I’m guessing, surf guitar legend Dick Dale, San Francisco’s Sonny & the Sunsets have created a perfect lo-fi record for the summer. With artist/playwright/musician Sonny Smith at its center, now finally propped up by a stable lineup, the band’s sophomore effort Hit After Hit continues along the same vein first mined in last year’s debut, a strong 60’s-soaked vibe delivered with Jonathan Richman-esque laid back vocals. Strong pop music without inane subject matters and nary an auto-tuned track in sight, songs like The Kink’s worthy “Teen Age Thugs” and “Heart of Sadness” make you long for a time when radio stations played music that wasn’t force feed by major labels. Tight guitars, lazy vocals and a handful of break up songs, you’d be hard pressed to find a better album for this summer than Hit After Hit. GRADE: B+ HOLLY GOLIGHTLY & THE BROKEOFFS – NO HELP COMING (Transdreamer) British ex-pat tackles rootsy Americana BL: With a sound that moves from garage rock and swampadelic boogie to rockabilly and folksy Americana, British-born singer-songwriter Holly Golightly remains tough to pin down. She’s like every song ever used on a Quentin Tarantino soundtrack, thrown into a blender and set to frappe. Her fourth album with The Brokeoffs (a.k.a. longtime partner-in-crime Lawyer Dave) is another solid outing for the Athens transplant, veering from the train-kept-a-rolling rhythm of

the title track to the White Stripes-influenced blues dirge of “The Rest Of Your Life,” from the country folk lament of “Here Lies My Love” to the fiery barnburner “Get Out Of My House” with aplomb. Covers of Bill Anderson’s “Lord Knows We’re Drinking” and Wavy Gravy’s trippy “L.S.D. (Rock ‘n’ Roll Prison)” prove the band comes by their influences honestly, their music more a product of record-collecting nurture than natural birthright. GRADE: B THE RIFFBROKERS – EVERY PILOT’S BLINDED BY THE SUN (Unsmashable) Seattle rockers not exactly breaking new ground JM: Washington state’s The Riffbrokers have managed to find a way to sound completely timeless. They play “rock” without any unnecessary prefix needed to describe their sound and as a result they could have recorded their latest (Every Pilot’s Blinded By the Sun) in the studio right next to Tom Petty when he was working on Damn the Torpedoes in ’79 or they could have just as easily been playing with Buffalo Tom in the mid 90’s. Their fifth and latest record, Every Pilot’s Blinded By the Light, fits into the same category. Some strong tracks (like the album opener “Better Angels”) and some meh tracks (“Down From the Down”) balance the effort, but keep it from being a must buy… or even a must burn for that matter. The band plays solid rock music, which is not an easy thing to do if you spend more than 10 minutes trying to find a great song on the radio recorded in the past few years, it’s just than most of the bands they are taking their cues from (Petty, R.E.M., Elvis Costello) do it a whole lot better. A solid effort from these Seattle natives, but, in the end, it proves ambition isn’t always enough. GRADE: C TOM P – SELF-TITLED (Self-Released) Hip-hop’s next “great white hope” BL: As a white man who grew up loving hip-hop in a 98% black community in Decatur, I find it easy to empathize with Tom P’s artistic plight. No matter how talented, schooled in history or devoted to the craft they may be, white hip-hop artists are inevitably met with an air of suspicion, often forced to prove themselves as lyrical warriors in the field of rap battle before earning acceptance. Tom P (a.k.a. Thomas Peters) has been kicking around the ATL’s hip-hop underground for a minute, building respect the old-fashioned way, and this self-titled album is evidence that the 25-year-old MC is ready for his chance to shine. Available for free download via his website (atltomp.com), the 14-track album boasts booming production, infectious grooves and raps that flip from slow ‘n’ steady to lightning quick at a moment’s notice. Regardless of the color of his skin, Tom P reps his hometown well. GRADE: B

O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU?

An Oral History of One of Hollywood’s Most Influential Soundtracks In Celebration of Its 10th Anniversary Reissue By T Bone BurneTT, as Told To david Wild

T

HE O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU? tale began for me with a phone call from Ethan Coen in late 1998 during which he asked me if I wanted to do a movie with Joel and him about the history of American music. That sounded like an irresistible proposition. O Brother, Where Art Thou? became much more than a killer gig. It was a fulfillment of a life of chasing down the old music without ever knowing where it was leading me. We were tapping into a beautiful and powerful musical stream. What is often called Bluegrass may have been in the middle of this stream, but it’s all part of a long history that includes everyone from Duke Ellington to Lefty Frizzell, from Billie Holiday to Elvis Presley and, maybe most of all, to Louis Armstrong. This stream we explored is the extraordinary music of the last century—an incredible treasure that comes to us directly from an age when music was made by everyone. It was analogue. It was made before the rise of the machines. I’ve always loved the more rough-hewn stuff like Jimmy Reed and the Stanley Brothers– music that wasn’t polished, music that was honest and in which there was a lot of history. Folk music had been around my whole life. I think a better, more accurate and more inclusive name for it is traditional American music. The great Ralph Stanley calls it “old time mountain music.” Some people who make this timeless sound call it country music. Call it what you want. As Duke Ellington once said, “If it sounds good, it is good.” When the Coen brothers started showing me some of the songs they had already chosen for O Brother, Where Art Thou?, it felt like my whole life was coming into play on this particular trip. The Coen brothers have a deep understanding of music, and know there is this river of music that flows through history. Sometimes it is raging and sometimes it slows down, but it’s been going on for a long time. We recorded the music before the movie. The first song we had to get was “Man Of Constant Sorrow.” The song is, of course, a standard — there are probably fifty versions of it. The version we used for our template was the version the Stanley Brothers had done with two singers answering the last line of every verse — which is, of course, comedic and paradoxical as the tune is about a tore-down, blown-out cat with these other voices attesting to

As many people know, Dan Tyminski from Alison Krauss and Union Station sang “Man Of Constant Sorrow” in an original and soulful way on the soundtrack. He also wrote and played the guitar part that gave the song a new life. But just for the record, George Clooney is a very good singer. If there had been more time to get George up to speed, he could have sung that song himself. The recording process started one afternoon upstairs at Ocean Way Studios in Nashville when we invited the incredible group of musicians to meet the Coens, and play some songs. We had asked Gillian Welch to be the hostess for these sessions. Gillian was a great ambassador, and I don’t think we could have done it without her. One by one, these extraordinary musicians came in. We told them what we were doing and asked them if they would sing some songs for us. By the end of that day, we had a good sense of who and what would be good where, and we drew up a plan. We worked in the old wooden room in Nashville (the Sound Emporium Studio A). Recording at the Sound Emporium is like playing inside a very good guitar. The room you record in is crucial to the way things sound, and what we were trying to do was make it feel as if you were there in the room in 1930— as opposed to making it sound old. The Coens gave us all a wonderful gift, just as every artist on the soundtrack did. Ralph Stanley conjuring “O Death” a cappella. Alison Krauss levitating “Down to the River to Pray.” Gillian and Alison and Emmylou vamping a lullaby. The Coxes bringing to us the other world they live and sing in. The Fairfield Four scoring the flood. Norman Blake was the conscience of the proceedings. John Hartford gave us his last breaths. This was, in one way, his final gift to us all. In one way or another, that was the cycle of O Brother. People got to buy houses who had never owned a house before. Ralph Stanley made millions of dollars. How great is that? It should have happened to him fifty years before. How did this experience change my life? It gave me a lot more freedom that I have worked hard not to relinquish. And the more freedom I’ve been given, the more liberties I’ve taken. But for many of us, O Brother was part of a musical education. It helped extend this important Twentieth Century musical legacy into the Twenty-First Century. We will always be deeply honored and very thankful that, when it came to making the music for O Brother, Where Art Thou?, everybody involved listened very closely—and that all of you did, too.

KEEP ON THE SUNNY SIDE

Dolly Parton On Big Dreams, Big Boobs & Her Big Plans For 2011 By BreT love

a

fter 17 years in the celebrity interview business, there are moments that will be forever embedded in my memory– walking down the hall of a swanky nyC hotel with ron howard and Mel Gibson at the end of my first press junket; getting stoned out of my gourd with Willie nelson on his tour bus while his sister made breakfast at 4aM; halle Berry flirtatiously stroking my goatee; running into Johnny Cash not once, but twice, in the elevator at the Beverly hills four seasons… i can now add to that list hearing Dolly Parton’s uproarious laughter as we talked about her famously bodacious breasts. Which was a bit surreal, considering i grew up watching Dolly on tV, listening to her on top 40 radio, and even hanging out with my grandparents at her theme park, Dollywood. Like nelson and Cash, Dolly has withstood the test of time, racking up a record 41 top 10 Country albums and 25 #1 singles over the past 50 years, including chart-topping hits in four consecutive decades. she’s also conquered tV (with her own variety shows in the ‘70s/‘80s and guest spots on hannah Montana), film (steel Magnolias, The Best Little Whorehouse in texas, the forthcoming Joyful noise) and even Broadway (adapting her hit 1980 film, 9 to 5). she also wrote one of the most popular pop songs of all time, “i Will always Love you.” Other stars may brighten and fade, but the 65-yearold Dolly just seems to shine on, emanating a beauty and light that seems to emanate from her heart and soul. With a new album and tour to promote, i was delighted to get a few minutes to talk to this venerable music legend. How does the life and career you have today com-

pare to the dreams you had for yourself when you first started out as a singer? actually, one never knows if they are going to see their dreams come true. i remember when i was a little girl, i just wanted to be a singer. i wanted people to hear my songs. i wanted to stand on stage and i wanted to be loved by a lot of people. i don’t know what really started this, but i wanted to travel. i wanted to make money. i wanted to have pretty clothes… all the things most young people dream about. i never imagined that it could turn out to be all that it has been, but i was always open to it. i asked God to lead me all the way, and i tried to take all the good things in and to let all the bad things out. i’ve been very blessed in that i’ve had a chance to do so many things in the business, and i’m still allowed to be in it at my age. You’ve seen quite a lot of career ups and downs over the past 52 years, since your first Grand Ole Opry appearance. What are the greatest lessons you’ve learned about maintaining career longevity during that time? When you’re in it, you don’t know how you’re going to end up, what kind of impression you’ll make on people or what kind of legacy you’re going to leave behind. you don’t think about those things when you’re doing it. now that i’m older, i reflect back and i think of how blessed i’ve been. even though they say it’s hard work and not luck, i still believe there is a certain amount of luck to it, even if it is divine luck. i feel so fortunate that i have gotten to do so many things, and to still be here. i really feel that God has had his hand on my life and helped guide me through the years. hopefully, i’ve made the right choices by staying strong in my faith and never letting myself get too far off track with my life.

You’ve always had this incredibly engaging personality that seems to really draw people to you. My late grandmother was a devout fan, I’ve loved you since I was a kid, and now my 10-year-old daughter loves you. Where does that inner light come from? i think it comes from my faith. i ask God every day to let me be a light and to let me shine and direct people. if people ask me what it is about me, i always say, “if there is something good about me, i’d like to think it’s God’s light.” That at least gives me the chance to say something about it. i’m certainly no angel. i’m as big a sinner as everybody else! i struggle, but i do love God. if i don’t get to heaven, i would at least like to have directed some other people there. i always wanted to go to heaven, but i learned early on that it’s going to be hell trying to get there. (Laughs) anyway, i would like to think that people are drawn to me because they feel like they know me. i’ve been around so long… like you said, with your grandmother and now your daughter, i think i’m more like family to people. it’s more like a family reunion than anything else when i meet with people. Your boobs are arguably the most iconic body parts to come along since Elvis’ hips and Bob Hope’s nose. Did you ever imagine that they would become such a defining characteristic? (Laughs) i think you’re right! somebody once said, “is it true that you had your boobs insured for a million dollars?” There was that rumor out there because of a joke i made once. But i said, “no, no, no… i didn’t say that they’re insured for a million dollars. i said they COst a million dollars!” (Laughs) i always had nice boobs when i was a young girl, and of course i’ve had them enhanced a little bit. i just like that sexy look. That’s always been my deal– big boobs, little waist, and nice hips. But the way i look comes from a serious place. Thankfully, it’s not all about the boobs. That certainly draws your attention first, because you can’t hardly miss ‘em, can you? (Laughs) i always say that it’s hard for a man to look me in the face... You released a 4-CD boxed set a few years back. I’m curious, what were your feelings as you looked back

over your first 40 years as a recording artist? first of all, i’m very thankful and grateful that i’ve gotten to stay so long and do so many varieties of music. i’ve gotten to do everything– bluegrass, mountain, gospel, pop, crossover… i really love that people have accepted me and let me be that whole thing. even now, like playing aunt Dolly on the hannah Montana show. i don’t want it to ever end. i ask God to let me be productive as long as i live, and to let me be a joy and some sort of inspiration. i look back at some of the stuff when people say things and i think, “i guess i did all that, but i just don’t remember it!” it’s just a way of life with me. i do whatever needs to be done that day. i appreciate all the awards and rewards that have been meaningful to me. i love that i’ve got money, but it’s not the money i count blessings for. honestly, i’m just so grateful that i’ve been able to last so long and to make a good living at what i love to do. How do you feel about the state of country music today? Well, i’m just thankful that country music is still around. i’ve seen it change colors so many times, i know all the faces of it. i’ve been involved in all of it. i think we’ve got some wonderful artists today. i think we will always have that old traditional country music that i love so much, and hopefully i’ll always be a part of that, just like when i did my bluegrass stuff. if i want to do a traditional album, i know i always can. i just think it’s wonderful. I’ve read that your new album will be a countryflavored dance record. What inspired you to go in that direction? it’s not a dance record at all. it’s very uplifting. i’ve said that i would someday like to release a dance record, but this isn’t it. This CD is called Better Day, and it’s all very positive and uplifting– songs about hope, light, and love. it’s about making people feel better about life and themselves. i wrote all the songs on the CD. But someday i am going to do a dance album. The tour is called the Better Day tour, which kicks off July 17th in Knoxville. We do america, europe and australia, which ought to be a big run with all of our music. i hope everyone will enjoy it!

THINKING MAN’S METAL

How Atlanta’s Mastodon Combined Intelligence and the Elements To Become One of the World’s Best Metal Bands By Bret Love

O

ver the past three decades, the state of Georgia has achieved worldwide recognition as a fertile breeding ground for musicians of nearly all stripes. artists such as tLC, Usher, Outkast and t.I. established the atL as the nation’s new urban music mecca. sugarland, Zac Brown and Jason aldean have made the peach state the hottest hQ for country music this side of Nashville. athens has produced rockers ranging from r.e.M. and the B-52s to Widespread panic and Drive-By truckers, while atlanta’s alternative scene has thrived thanks to acts such as Deerhunter, the Black Lips, Manchester Orchestra and the Coathangers. But, outside of an occasional breakthrough act such as sevendust, Georgia has never had much of a heavy metal scene to speak of (although savannah has recently been doing its part to alter that perception). and so the masterful quartet known as Mastodon– bassist/vocalist troy sanders, guitarist/vocalist Brent hinds, guitarist Bill Kelliher and drummer Brann Dailor– essentially had to create their own scene, touring relentlessly and building up a grass-roots following the old-fashioned way, eventually emerging as one of the most critically acclaimed metal bands in the world. It was quite likely this cart-before-thehorse strategy that helped Mastodon to break free from the mire in which many other hard rock and heavy metal bands in atlanta got stuck. With no local metal scene to speak of (and the Internet still a developing phenomenon), the band became valiant road warriors right from the get-go, knowing that no radio stations, record labels or booking agents were likely to come knocking on their doors. “With our type of music, we knew we had to get out there and do the work ourselves, and we were into that. It’s very rare,” he reflects, “because it’s hard to find three other guys that are willing to be married to you. It’s hard enough to make one marriage work, much less a 4-way marriage. I’ve seen some of the greatest bands in the world not go anywhere because one guy couldn’t tour because he’s in school, has two children and a job. I’ve seen bands not reach their potential because of that and I understand it. But I also realize it’s very special that the four of us had that common desire to travel and get it done ourselves.” the band’s touring schedule in the early days was relentless, built on a philosophy of being willing to play anywhere that was willing to have them, whether in atlanta or across North america. they would often play shows where the bartenders and sound guys were their only audience. signing with respected label relapse records (home to influential bands such as Brutal truth, exhumed and voivod) certainly served to

elevate their profile on the national metal scene, with a corollary increase in followers. By the time their second album was released in 2004, Mastodon had already played in excess of 500 shows. “Literally, we would be happy to play and break even, or lose money,” sanders says of the band’s approach. “It didn’t matter at the time for us. We just felt that we had a unique chemistry among the four of us and we knew we had the potential to write creative music. We always intended on paying our dues and never expected anything at all to land in our lap.” still, sanders, the father of two children, acknowledges that life on the road does present challenges for band members with families. “In the grand scheme of things, that’s not so bad. If that’s the one sacrifice I need to make to follow my dream and take care of my family, then it’s well worth it in the end. the separation is brutal, but at the same time I know there are 1,000 people who would want to be in my shoes, so I’m not going to complain. Mastodon has been touring since the beginning, so this has been my life for the last decade.” as much as touring helped to hone Mastodon’s chops and introduce them to new fans across the United states, it was their 1994 album Leviathan that is largely credited with breaking the band on an international scale. It was one of the most ambitious heavy metal albums ever recorded, with a central thematic concept loosely based on herman Melville’s classic novel Moby Dick, using Captain ahab’s relentless pursuit of the legendary white whale as a metaphor for the band’s relentless pursuit of success in the music industry. Naturally, sanders says that the concept came to them while on tour. “We had a european tour, and our drummer Brann was in hawaii for his honeymoon,” sanders recalls. “he had three layovers– hawaii to san Francisco, san Francisco to atlanta, atlanta to London, and then London to wherever in Germany, where the tour started. he was awake for that entire 24-hour span, and read the Moby Dick novel. he was exhausted from not sleeping and from all the travel. When he got to the part where the whale is referred to as a sea salt mastodon, it clicked. “at the time,” sanders continues, “we had gone through three white vans and we were out there in the world, 50% driven and 50% lunatics. It was like, ‘Look at all the great things we’re leaving behind and sacrificing, and for what?’ It was a direct parallel to the way Captain ahab was. he was out there determined to get this whale, but he was out of his mind at the same time. We even called our van ‘the White Whale’ before this..”

the idea may have seemed insane from the point of conception, but the band’s inspired execution made Leviathan one of the most critically acclaimed heavy metal albums since Metallica’s seminal …aND JUstICe FOr aLL. With a sound that veered from classically inspired arpeggios to bludgeoning thrash riffs, with Dailor’s hammer-of-the-gods drumming driving the turn-on-a-dime tempo changes, the record played out almost like a heavy metal opera of epic Wagnerian drama. the accolades poured in, with Kerrang! Magazine naming it the #1 album of 2004, Metal hammer Magazine naming it #2, and National public radio eventually naming the song “Blood & thunder” one of the most important recordings in what was “a phenomenal decade for metal.” Leviathan had a huge impact on the band’s career trajectory: their Unholy alliance tour took them across North america and europe alongside big-time metal icons such as slayer and slipknot, the song “Blood & thunder” was used in a halfdozen video games (including Guitar hero: Metallica), and Mastodon ultimately wound up getting signed by major label Warner Bros. But perhaps more importantly, the album forever changed the way the band functioned on a creative level, which has only seemed to make them a stronger, more cohesive unit over time. released in 2009, Crack the skye took Mastodon’s artistic aspirations to new heights, centering around the out of body experience of a quadriplegic who learns astr al projection and flies too close to the sun, burning the umbilical cord that connects him to his corporeal body and sending him soaring into oblivion. along the way, the album tackled heady topics ranging from wormholes and physicist stephen hawking’s theories to russian madman rasputin and the spiritual realm, confirming the veracity of Mastodon’s long-time tag as “thinking man’s metal.” sanders laughs when asked about said label, admitting his relief that I wasn’t asking if the band did hallucinogenics together. “I’m fine with that,” he says. “there’s always going to be some kind of tag put on you. even I do it. thinking man’s metal? that’s pretty good.” these days, carving that path is keeping the men of Mastodon busier than ever. In the past year alone, the band has released

an instrumental soundtrack ep for the comic book-film adaptation of Jonah hex at the request of director Jimmy hayward; embarked upon the Blackdiamondskye (a combination of the latest album titles by the three bands involved) tour of North america with alice In Chains and Deftones; and released a CD/DvD, Live at the aragon, featuring a performance of Crack the skye in its entirety. “It’s all still coming together,” sanders admits, “as we are in the lyrical and vocal stages now. It might be about 10 days too early to tell for sure what direction the new songs are heading in. But these serious chapters, especially Crack the skye, told a complete story. those four chapters have kind of become its own book, and that book is closed now. this one is more like an exhalation– more of a celebratory record as opposed to something incredibly deep to us. It’s more like an open book.” With nearly universal critical acclaim, ever-growing commercial success, an endless array of ideas and a seemingly strong “marriage” among four friends who’ve been working together anywhere from 11 to 18 years, the same could be said of Mastodon’s future. as our 40-minute conversation winds down and sanders prepares to join the rest of the band at Doppler for yet another long day of recording, there are songs to be written and bags to be packed, as the band prepares for a tour that will take them across europe (including the sonisphere and roskilde Festivals) before returning to the U.s. on July 30 for a one-off show in seattle with the recently reunited soundgarden, Queens of the stone age and Meat puppets. according to sanders, it’s just the beginning of what may be the band’s biggest road trip to date. “I hope that we can travel and continue to play lands that we’ve yet to reach,” he says when asked of his goals for Mastodon. “We still want to play in hawaii and alaska. We haven’t made it to south africa or China. those are things that we’re hoping to tackle next year. Once you’re playing turkey, Greece, Iceland and Croatia, the world feels so much bigger. hopefully, we’ll have the brotherhood amongst us remain and continue to write music that collectively inspires us. even to this day, we’re still ascending the mountain. We have yet to reach the peak.” PG 23 • insiteatlanta.com • August 2011

Chris Evans On The Life-Changing Ride of Captain America and The Avengers

242 Boulevard S.E. Atlanta . 30312

By Alex S. morriSon

n

ot long ago, it was easy to dismiss Chris evans as just another handsome Hollywood beefcake, better known for his all-american good looks than he was for his thespian achievements in films such as Cellular, Push and the losers. But the minute he was cast as Captain america, suddenly the blogosphere was abuzz with fanboys debating the Boston native’s potential merits (or lack thereof ) as the first avenger, steve Rogers. now, the reviews are in (and mostly positive), the cash is being counted (over $80 million at the domestic box office in Captain america’s first two weeks of release), and expectations are high for 2012’s the avengers, which will find evans co-starring opposite acting heavyweights such as Robert Downey Jr. (iron Man), Mark Ruffalo (the Hulk), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), scarlett Johansson (Black widow) and samuel l. Jackson (nick Fury) in the biggest Marvel Universe film yet. evans recently sat down with reporters to discuss Captain america: the First avenger and the role that will inexorably change his life. Between Captain America and The Avengers, you’ve been playing this character for a while. Now that people are finally seeing it, do you feel relieved that people are really digging your take? it was nice, continuity-wise to be able to go literally from Captain america right into the avengers. to keep yourself in the same frame of mind is nice as an actor, but it’s also nice to get some feedback from the audience. at the end of the day, we’re making these movies for the fans, and especially the hardcore fans, and they’re the ones that i’m most concerned about. Your character undergoes a physical transformation on the outside, but his mind remains the same. Have you had this experience in real life where you’ve changed on the outside but you’re still trying to remain true to yourself? Do i have this experience? well, don’t we all? i guess. i think we all do. i think no matter what goes on around you, we all try to maintain who we are. i don’t think any of us can go through that radical of a physical transformation that he goes through though. So you’re filming The Avengers now and your face is all over these posters and toys. How are you handling being Chris Evans to being known as Captain America? i am pretty good at one on one interviews but press with studio audiences, cameras, red carpets where there’s a lot of people, i just don’t do well. i feel very self-conscious. there’s the lifestyle stuff too. i went to the gym yesterday and it was just different. you’re signing things. it’s going to come in waves. that’s what i keep telling myself. this is just right now. in three months, i’ll be able to go back to Bally’s and no one will bother me. Do you ever talk to guys like Tommy Lee Jones to see how they handle it? sure. i cannot say enough about Robert Downey Jr. i love that guy. He’s so great and so willing to talk about this stuff. this is all new or me. i’ve made movies, but nothing like this. it’s great to be able to talk to someone who’s been in a spot like this for good and bad reasons. He has so much presence and charisma and confidence. He seems so centered and peaceful. He seems happy. isn’t that the goal? i love being able to talk to him about this stuff.

i choSe to do thiS movie BecAuSe it wAS the thing i wAS the moSt ScAred oF. How do you stay grounded when your life is changing like this? i just moved back to Boston, where i’m from, and that’s a big thing. there’s something about l.a.: even when you’re not working, you feel like you’re working. Back in Boston, my buddies hate my movies. they think i’m the worst actor on the planet. i’m very quickly reminded of who i was, and who i am. it’s a much healthier environment for me. so hopefully, in ten years, i’ll be the same guy. This movie should be a vehicle for you to be able to hone in on some passion projects for you. Do you have any in mind? Porno. (laughter) i think i’d be great. i really think i’ve got a future. I’ll bet they’re gonna make you wear the outfits. Where does the shield go? (laughter) i’m glad this is being recorded… i would love to direct. i’ve been saying it for a while. it’s a tricky thing to make the transition because i’ve never directed before, and it’s going to take a really crazy person to trust me with a film. i can’t tell you how often i sit on set and just desperately wish i was in charge. it’s not just about being a control freak. it’s that i love films and i love acting. i think the reason i got into acting is because i like movies. Pick a genre: i like it all. i would be happy to direct anything. you could give me any movie in the world and i’d be happy to direct it. i would just love to create the story, and i think it would suit what i’m looking for as far as a lifestyle is concerned. Could you talk a little bit about how The Avengers is going? Can you tell fans what they should be excited about? it’s going great. i mean, Joss (whedon), i really tip my hat to him. He has such a difficult job. every day we come to set and you read how a scene is going to be shot, but you don’t know what he’s going to do with the camera. Usually when you’re filming, the first shot is some sort of a master shot to get the whole layout of the scene. typically, those shots are a little bland. But even his masters have energy and action. you watch playback and you’re like, “Man, this is going to have some life!” even with a simple scene, Joss manages to give the camera some interesting action. and i can’t say enough about the actors involved, especially Downey and Mark Ruffalo. each day i watch these guys do things and i’m like, “Man, i hope i’m not the weak link in this movie. i gotta work harder!” i have really high hopes for it…

C

oming off of their inaugural season that saw them post a very respectable 6-5 record in a schedule that included alabama, the georgia State Panthers are gearing up for 2011 with the opener against Clark atlanta scheduled for friday night, September 2nd in the georgia Dome. With only five seniors on last year’s squad the experience factor should be in Panther’s favor. insite had the chance to speak with Panther play-by-play man Dave Cohen and returning linebacker mark hogan, who started eight games and registered 54 tackles, including 21 solo. What do you see as the highlights from last season? DC: The highlights from the inaugural season were the first and last games. The opener against Shorter university was one of the greatest events in georgia State athletics history. it was a 41-7 win at the georgia Dome in front of a crowd of over 31,000 fans. after that, even though all the games were exciting, the buildup to the final game against defending national Champion alabama in tuscaloosa was present throughout the season. honestly, despite the final score, it was a magical night to be playing in that atmosphere and it peaked on albert Wilson’s 97 yard return for a touchdown. it was georgia State’s only score of the game but it was a memorable one. What games in the 2011 schedule jump out at you? Cohen: The opener this season against Clark atlanta has the possibility of drawing another huge crowd in the georgia Dome on September 2nd for obvious reasons. it features to atlanta schools right here in the city. The game at Jacksonville State will be a challenge as they are likely to be a pre-season fCS top 25 team. They beat us last year in overtime. our only game against an fBS team will be a road trip to texas to play the university

of houston Cougars. Their quarterback, Case Keenum, returns this season from an injury and is expected to be ready to play.

How has the student body and alumni responded to Panther Football? Cohen: i think the student body has responded positively and with excitement and as the university continues to add more on-campus student housing, more students will enjoy a more traditional college experience and that includes college football games in the georgia Dome. football has also been a big boost with regards to reconnecting georgia State with many of its alumni. What do you view as the pluses and minuses in playing at the Georgia Dome? Cohen: Playing in the georgia Dome is a huge plus for the georgia State football program. how many other schools can claim an nfl facility as their home stadium? at this time it makes perfect sense for us to play there. Building a new on-campus facility is not economically feasible at this time. it’s a great recruiting tool for the coaches. Who are the players to watch out for this coming season? Cohen: Players to watch: on the offensive side of the ball the Panthers will need to be more productive running the football and that effort will be led by travis evans. The Williston, fl native carried the ball 79 times last year for 382 yards and 3 touchdowns. receiver Danny Williams had 54 receptions for 649 yards and 5 touchdowns. Defensively the Panthers need to improve their run defense. returning starters include Brandon Jones (65 tackles), louie muasau (61 tackles), and

Christo Bilukidi (51 tackles, 5 sacks) and mark hogan (54 tackles) How is the team approaching year two and following up what was an exciting and successful inaugural season? hogan: i would say that we are ready to get out there and show people the improvements that we’ve made and to become a more competitive team than we were last year. i think you’ll see that on the field, that we are a more veteran team. We’ve been through some battles and i think this fall you’ll see some of those results. How do you think things will be different this year now that you have one complete season under your belt and without the hoopla of it being the first season? hogan: our first away game last year was our first ever road trip and the first time for some of our players to ever be on a plane. Some of those things can be a little bit of a distraction so now i think you’ll see us focus in more on the task at hand and what we need to do to win close games. One of the challenges again this season will be for the defensive unit to do a better job stopping the run. With a few changes on defense how do you think that will go? hogan: We worked on that all spring. That was top priority, stopping the run, and we saw some improvements in that and just another year of the defense working together, knowing the personnel that we have, knowing the defensive schemes even better and what we are trying to accomplish when we call a certain play. all that has gotten better during the spring and now we’re looking forward to the fall.

none of the touring bands play Ipswich because of the problems mentioned earlier. how did the band first come together?

What is the music scene like in Ipswich? Due to lack of venues and promoters, Ipswich doesn’t really have a unified music scene. there are a few bands playing the local circuit who are doing their thing. But, to be honest, travelling to shows is the only option for us.

What can you tell me about the new record? Our new record is called I wish I could stay here and is something we have been working on for about 7 months. since signing to Run For cover we decided to do a full-length album, and that was the start of us writing and demo-ing songs until we finally had 10 that we were really happy with. we wanted to try new things in our songwriting. I love when bands release albums and each one is different from the last. the Run For cover roster is full of amazingly talented musicians and we knew there was a high standard to meet, so we tried our best to make something slightly different but that was still recognizable as us. we took a lot of inspiration from Jets to Brazil, samiam, sunny Day Real estate and other 90’s bands and I think that comes across in the album’s sound.

K’s Basement may call IpswIch home, but they’ve always had a soft spot for america. On wish I could stay here, their full length debut for Run For cover, the band shows subtle nods to everyone from samiam to sunny Day Real estate. and don’t even get them started on U.s. cuisine. Between playing shows and meeting fans on their first U.s. tour, the band has been dreaming about visits to waffle houses and chick-fil-a. Guitarist alex henery explains in more detail below.

we were all interested in starting a band and we all hung out together, so it just made sense that we should start trying to write some songs. It started with us just sending songs to each other over the Internet and then jamming them at either of our houses whenever we had free time. eventually we played a few shows and then recorded a demo, and it just went from there.

How did you first come to the attention of Run for Cover Records? I spoke to andrea first and she showed interest in the band around when the 7” was being put out. after the response we got from that release we started talking more

OUR FAVORITE THINGS By B. Love

I

’ve always loved natural woods, so I’m inexorably drawn to Italian brand WeWOOD’s (we-wood.us) use of unique woods ranging from Red wing Celtis to Guaiaco in their distinctive watches. I’m even more impressed by their focus on environmental sustainability: wewood has partnered with american Forests to plant one tree for every watch they sell. But even if you don’t give a damn about reforestation, wewood’s watches just plain look cool. available in two styles and myriad shades, these watches are as fashionable as they are eco-friendly, making you look sleek and sophisticated while simultaneously promoting environmental sustainability. among my friends, my love of “girlie drinks” (a.k.a. those that actually taste good) is legendary, and the Mudslide has always been among my favorites. so I couldn’t have been more thrilled when a friend’s blog turned me onto the BAILEY’S MUDSLIDE (baileys. com), which blends Baileys Irish Cream, vodka, coffee, cream and chocolate liqueurs. simply pour 16 oz. of the pre-mixed perfection with two cups of ice into a blender, and within minutes you have a divine frozen cocktail that truly tastes like heaven in a glass! The company is making this delicious dessert-like concoction available

for a limited time (a.k.a. summer), so make mine a double! I use microphones a lot, recording songs at home, recording interviews, recording voiceovers for videos for my Green Global Travel website, and amplifying live vocal performances. But until I got my hands on AUDIOTECHNICA’S ATR-2100 (audiotechnica.com)– a handheld mic with UsB, XlR and headphone outputs– I never had a high quality microphone that was effective for all of these endeavors. The aTR2100 is a cardioid dynamic mic offering great frequency response and a 44.1-48 kHz sampling rate, which makes it equally suitable for home studio recording, field recording, or live performance. It’s everything I need in a multipurpose mic. I love autumn– the cool breeze, the changing leaves, the gradual buildup to the holidays. I also love the sexy boots the lovely ladies of the aTl always seem to break out of their closets at that time of year. My lady and I were lucky enough to get a sneak peak at the Fall line from designer STEVE MADDEN (stevemadden.com), and immediately found ourselves drawn to new designs such as the Carnby-l, Neley, alanyy and Prepie (pictured). It may be a little too early in the year for santa to start Christmas shopping, but it’s never too early to start making your wish list!

and more, and last year I was out in america with man Overboard and we ended up crashing at Jeff ’s. we talked more about working together and a few weeks after that we decided on doing a full length. since then they have been awesome, we are in contact all the time and getting to hang out with Jeff on the tigers Jaw tour was really cool. Run For cover has such a family vibe to its roster, all the bands we have met and toured with on the label have been great people and musicians, it’s not like that with all labels so we are very privileged to be on Run For cover. Do you have plans to tour the U.S. yet? we have always wanted to come to the states since day one, and this year looks like it will finally become a reality. we plan to come over in august and do some dates with such Gold and some with Daylight. I cannot express how excited we are about coming over. we have so many friends in the states we want to see and so many places we want to eat at: chick-fil-a, waffle house, angelo’s pizza etc. so yeah, look out for dates being released online. It’s going to be the best tour ever. What’s next for the band? we are mainly just focusing on releasing the record and touring america, I can’t think past any of that. I don’t know really, after doing these two big things on our to-do list I can’t imagine anything that could top them. I guess we will see. Those are all the questions I have. Anything else you want to add? Go to shows, put on shows, make a zine, draw on walls, skate, film, start a band, do something cool this summer.

by b. loVe & John b. moore er: The compleTe 15Th season TV producers have a problem saying goodbye, as evidenced by how often they keep shows on life support long after all storylines have been exhausted. ER was an exception: By centering on a revolving cast of characters, creators managed to keep the show going strong for 15 seasons. In this last season, writers did a decent job of tying up loose ends without completely closing the loop on all relationships. Most notable was the feat of bringing back some of the most memorable cast members in a creative way, with Eric La Salle, Noah Wyle, Julianna Margulies and George Clooney, all popping up towards the end of the show’s run. enToUrage: The compleTe 7Th season After a bumpy few years, this HBO series finally got back into its groove. The story finds actor Vincent Chase (Adrian Grenier) between movies, hooking up with porn star Sasha Grey and getting addicted to booze and cocaine. His hangers-on have found their own lives, with Eric (Kevin Connolly) managing actors; Turtle (Jerry Ferrara) pitching tequila; and big brother Johnny Drama (Kevin Dillon) being wooed to play a cartoon monkey. As this satire of Hollywood wraps things up, it’s nice to see it ending on the right note. roboT chicken: sTar wars iii The only ones in Hollywood who care as much about Star Wars as Family Guy creator Seth McFarlane are the guys behind Adult Swim’s stop motion animation show. It seems like more than mere coincidence that Seth Green works on both shows.

Unlike McFarlane’s somewhat loyal recreation of each Star Wars film, Robot Chicken sticks to its skits and sight gags formula, which plays well given the abundance of material here. The DVD set, surprisingly, also includes an interview with George Lucas.

shark week: resTless FUry We’re of two minds about Discovery Channel’s popular Shark Week. On one hand, the show offers awe-inspiring footage, dispelling myths and unveiling mysteries behind one of nature’s most powerful predators. On the other, it encourages fear via sensationalism, when the truth is that sharks are one of the world’s most critically engendered animals. Still, we support any effort to engender awareness of these misunderstood creatures, and there’s no denying the visceral thrill of watching a fearsome beast ripping its prey to shreds. warehoUse 13: season 2 Described as “part X-Files, part Raiders of the Lost Ark and part Moonlighting,” the SyFy network’s highest-rated show follows a team of agents assigned to track down supernatural artifacts for a secret government warehouse. Despite the fact that “rulebender” Pete Lattimer (Eddie McClintock) and bythe-book partner Myka Bering have Scully/Mulderesque chemistry, the show is no mere knock-off. Season 2 upped the ante, with more action, more comedy and intricate storylines that encouraged viewers to tune in week after week. ZonaD If you’ve never seen director John Carney’s previous film, the romantic musical Once, see it now! We’ll wait… For the rest of you, Zonad applies the same brand of low-key Irish charm to an offbeat comedy about a thief (Simon Delaney) who escapes from rehab and convinces a local family that he’s a visitor from outer space. The pretend alien crushes on their teen daughter, but his plans to steal her from a rich boyfriend go awry when a fellow escapee tries to hone in on “Zonad’s” action. It’s all delightfully wacky, almost retro fun.

PULLLING NO PUNCHES Title Fight Trades College For Careers In The Music Biz By John B. Moore

t

he guys in Kingston, PA’s melodic hardcore band title Fight saw no reason why they had to choose between their band and a college education. They could tour during the summer and on holiday breaks, write and record during their free time and attend classes during the week. it was a perfect plan and they group didn’t have to choose between one or the other… until they did. Just months into their first semester at school, the band, three-fourths of which had been playing together since they were 13, were offered a chance to tour with new Found glory. They thought about it a bit, and then chose to take the tour. ever since then, things have been falling into place for title Fight. They recently signed to the highly influential indie label sideoneDummy; they just released their year-in-the-making debut full length sheD and are about to head out on their first headlining tour of the u.s. followed by a summer of european festival dates. And best of all, no finals. Bassist and co-founder ned Russin spoke recently about the new record. This is your first full length, right? yeah, we did two 7 inches and a split with our friends’ band… and the guy who runs (the record label) Run For Cover thought it would be a good idea if we put all of our ePs onto one record to get all of our music out there, because most of it was out of print. We did that and a lot of people took that as our first full length, but that was really more of a collection. So are the songs on SHED relatively new, written just for this record?

Well, we recorded our last eP, The Last Thing you Forget, in December of 2008 and right after that we were still in high school at the time and just starting to get serious about touring, so that’s what we put our attention to and didn’t start writing until about the next winter. All the songs that we wrote were for this LP. We wrote them all at once because we wanted them to be one cohesive thought rather than be a scatterbrained collection of songs from all over the place.

You guys have been together for a long time – since 2003, I’m assuming you’re influences have changed over time. Has your sound changed at all? Or is it still the same sound and influences you guys have had since day one? i’d like to think it’s pretty different. When we started out we were 13 and just wanted to be like Blink 182 and we were a three-piece at the time and all our songs were pretty simple and basic. it was cool at the time, but i feel we have drawn in a whole lot more of influences. At the time we were into bands like The Descendents, but as we grew up we’ve gotten into a lot of other different bands. As far as our songs go, they are definitely better, or at the very least more mature. We’re the same people with the same goals that we had when we were 13 – being in a band and playing shows – but at the same time we have a better understanding now and are a lot more experienced. You guys dropped out of college to concrete on this band full time. Did you catch any flak from your parents? oh, yeah. Where were you guys going? i was going to st. Joseph’s down in Philly, shane

(Moran, guitar) and my brother (Ben, drums) were going to temple and Jamie (Rhoden, vocals and guitar) never went to college. Did you have that feeling like maybe this isn’t a good idea or did you always have the thought that you could go back if things weren’t working out with the band? it was a weird situation. it was always “you have to go to college,” and i heard that from my school and i heard that from my parents and everybody around me. That’s cool, that’s what people do, you go to college and then get a job and that’s great for a lot of people, but we had such a cool opportunity… i had it in my head that we could do both, go to school and in the summer and on Christmas breaks we’d tour and write records, and then we got an opportunity to do a tour with new Found glory… We could go on tour with new Found glory and do what we said we’ve wanted to do since we were 13 or we could go back to

school. We thought about it and it just seemed like the right decision. The tour with New Found Glory, where did you go with them? They were going on a big tour with Dashboard Confessional and they were playing really big venues, and they wanted to do a small intimate tour before that Dashboard tour, so we got on that one. it was threeweeks and it went all the way to st. Louis and we did a lot of east coast stuff. it was a scattered tour… Were you able to play in markets you hadn’t been before? yeah, up until that tour, we did a full u.s. tour with our friends in Foundation and Mother of Mercy and that was our first time really going out past the east Coast, but that was also a really quick tour, so we really didn’t get to see a lot of places. The new Found glory tour was almost all new places for us.

FLYING A NEW FLAG

Punk-Rock Anarchists White Wives, Much More Than A Mere Side Porject By John B. Moore

C

ALL ‘eM AnARChists CALL ‘eM DiRty PunKs, just don’t call ‘em a side project. White Wives, comprised of Chris #2 and Chris head from Anti-Flag, Roger harvey from Dandelion snow and tyler Kweder from American Armada, may all have fulltime day jobs, but that didn’t mean this band was just another time-filler between albums and tours. White Wives began as a thoughtful, longtime collaboration between friends that took inspiration from the mid-60’s Dutch anarchist Provo movement. The latest result is happeners, their debut full length for Adeline Records, a brilliant mix of anarchist intellect and indie rock that borrows from just as much from pop music as punk rock. Chris #2 and harvey spoke recently about the band, the movement that inspired them as well as setting straight about the side project label.

We’re gratefUl to have So MUCh dIverSIty WIthIn oUr proJeCt. and I hope It ShoWS. lIke any progreSSIve endeavor of the artS We eMBraCe oUr dIverSIty. PG 28 • insiteatlanta.com • August 2011

How did the idea for this band first come about? Chris #2: For me there were several catalysts for this project. First was when Roger and i spoke about working on his record (The grand scheme of Things) and he sent me about 30 songs, and every single one of them had something that i believed to be special. i wanted to see what would happen if we wrote together, what he could add to music that i write. When i first started playing music i played guitar, i enjoy playing bass, but the first instrument i picked up and dedicated myself to playing was guitar. i wanted to tap back into that dedication. Wives is a facilitation of this. harvey: Chris had the idea of starting something together and called me one day out of the blue when i was living in Brooklyn. i had never really thought of doing a project like this. But the idea seemed so simple and obvious to me. We are both very focused and very busy elsewhere in our lives. so to me it kinda came out of left field. But i was very excited to rearrange my life to have the opportunity to make music with someone i’m so closed to and that respect so much. Chris is like a brother to me. i left Brooklyn a few days later.

The music obviously doesn’t sound like what you’d expect from AntiFlag or your other bands. Was that a conscious decision? harvey: We definitely have worked hard to create something that is separate from the projects we are currently a part of (and previously). it has been really rewarding to hear people reacting to this band as just that: something new. it means the world that people can let themselves be free enough to listen with open ears. We have liberated ourselves with this project.

How long have you guys known each other? Chris #2: (Chris) head and i obviously have been playing music together for 10 years. Roger we met when he went out on Anti-Flag’s Mobilize for Peace tour selling merch for The Code (he had a note from his mom in case any authority figures asked why a 15-year-old kid was in a shitty van). tyler (Kweder) i met a couple years ago, we actually played hockey together, after becoming fast friends i brought him into our rock and roll fold as well.

What is the significance behind the band’s name? Chris #2: The Provos had a set agenda they called the White Plans. one of these said plans is the White Wives Plan, where they passed out literature on safe sex, distributed birth control, and in a time where sexual independence was most definitely taboo, they push for people to take their sexuality in their own hands.

Tell me about the Provo music and how it’s connected to the band? Chris #2: The Provo movement was a Dutch group of young, fashionable, thoughtful anarchists. There was a sense of confidence in their agenda that i think has been lacking. not necessarily arrogance, but the belief that what they were doing was important. The major aspect about the Provo’s that we wanted to adopt is their ability to blend their politics with life, love, humor. We stole that idea; we’ve incorporated it into our songs. We do not have a single “political” song, there are ideas discussed, but we take turns in the song, stray from only walking on one path.

How did you find your sound? Did it just sort of evolve after playing together or did you go into the project with specific ideas of influences? harvey: We all listen to such a wide range of music. i didn’t really know what to expect. i think we all came into this with a really flexible mind set. in turn our sound evolved very organically in our rehearsal room. We’re grateful to have so much diversity within our project. And i hope it shows. Like any progressive endeavor of the arts we embrace our diversity.

What’s next for the band? Chris #2: our record happeners comes out June 28. The plan is to be on the road as much as possible. We’re hopeful to see this released internationally, and find ourselves overseas playing these songs. This is a band that we all believe in so much. We plan on doing everything in our power to share our songs and ideas with every pair of ears who will listen. harvey: We will continue to play and continue to make music we love together every chance we get. our goals are reasonable and we have our eyes set on the sun. Above all, we hope that people enjoy listening to our songs as much as we have enjoyed making them together. it means the world to us.

Some CatChing Up to Do With the NFL lockout over, INsite talks to Atlanta

Falcons star receiver Roddy White By DeMaRcO WilliaMS

N

ow that NFL owNers and players have kissed and made up over their labor issues, we can finally get back to the most important question surrounding the game: who is the number one receiver in the league? Fans in houston will say andre Johnson, fans in Detroit and arizona will argue that their guys Calvin Johnson and Larry Fitzgerald are the clear favorites. But in atlanta, there isn’t a doubt about who the top wideout. atlanta Falcons receiver roddy white is the hands down leader. the south Carolina native is 6-0, 212 pounds and blessed with the speed of a gazelle and hands that are dependable as hell. In 2010, he had 10 touchdowns to go along with NFC highs in receptions (115) and yards (1,389). roddy also made his third Pro Bowl. with the evolution of quarterback Matt ryan and the addition of all-everything receiver Julio Jones, those numbers should only improve this coming year. as this candid interview proves though, stats don’t mean nearly as much to white as super Bowls do. But smart fantasy owners know that in order to win titles, roddy white’s gotta score tDs, so, ultimately, everyone wins.

What do you think first-round pick Julio Jones brings, besides great speed and great hands? What kind of intangibles does he have? he’s a big guy. we’re an easy target for the quarterback, which is good because it’s not really much about speed. there are a lot of great athletes in this league, especially at the cornerback position. [It’s] just about being able to control your body and what you can do. he has great body control and getting his body in front of people, catching passes in tough situations, and that’s primarily the big thing. Would you consider yourself a success story? It depends on what you define as success for yourself? what do you want out of your career as a football player? For me, I set some goals earlier in my career, and I’ve pretty much passed them all. Not saying that it came so quick because I did struggle in the beginning. You know, for the first two years, and I kind of caught fire and I kind of got to a lot of my goals that I said that I wanted to do in my career. and now, it’s time to reset them, and go after bigger heights and bigger things. goal in this league, no matter how long I play, is to win the super Bowl. and no matter what the stats say at the end of the day, I just want to be a super Bowl champion. How do you stay healthy in this league? I’m getting a little bit better as to where I don’t eat as much food as I used to. as far as my diet, I don’t even have one. I tell myself I will start my diet when I’m in my 30s, so I’ve got another year before that happens. I’m just going to kind of relax. You know, it’s great to eat. I started taking vitamins. that’s one of the things I’ve started doing, and I can kind of feel my body transforming to those vitamins. Fans love your personality out there on the field. Off the field, what makes Roddy White smile? What do you like doing when you are not at the Georgia Dome? oh, everything. I’m a big family guy. Me and my family, we take about two or three vacations during the year—especially in the summertime. Being around the people that love you and care for you, and you know they will always be there for you. and that’s a big thing for me. Going from South Carolina, to the University of Alabama-Birmingham, to the Falcons, I know you’ve had some coaches who have taught you important lessons. If you could, share a couple of them. one thing my coach preached in meetings is just being a student of the game. Understanding what it is that people expect from you and what it is that they demand of you, and be professional. Go out there and be a professional and just stay on top of your game. Be ahead of the playbook, instead of just at the playbook. Go in there and study what you need to know, learn it, and then reach ahead, so there are always no surprises for you. In this game they throw so many things at you and you have to learn so much stuff that it takes time. the mental part of the game in the NFL is what makes the difference between you and the other guy. It’s not the physical part, because everybody is talented. so, you have to bring in your mental part of the game, week in and week out, to dominate the game.

The 2010 season was great, but it ended on a low note with Green Bay coming through like they did. How do you handle seasons like that, where there are a lot of highs and lows? You just gotta go game by game. You just prepare yourself always for the following week until the last game of the season no matter what the situation. You hope that you reach the super Bowl but unfortunately we didn’t last year. there is always room for improvement. every year you strive for your team to make changes and to get your team better. the window of opportunity to win the super Bowl, it comes and goes, you know. I think it is like a three- or four-year period and then the window shuts down, and then you kind of rebuild and things like that. so, you just want to go in there, keep focused, keep the cool guys around you that you need to win a championship and you keep going from there.

“The great thing is I don’t feel a thing. It feels solid, it feels stable, no pain. That’s one of the reasons why I took as long as I did to come back is that I want to get to this point where I can go ahead and start playing golf again like this. It’s been a very long time, and it feels good to go out there today and hit balls like this, go practice and feel nothing and walk around and pretty much do anything I want on the golf course.” –Tiger Woods, on playing his first rounds of competitive golf since a leg injury in May Thought the fight between the players and owners was the only battle going in the NFL? Nope. In fact, here are five on-the-field QB clashes that may go down to the last blow: 1) John Beck vs. Rex Grossman (Washington); 2) Tarvaris Jackson vs. Charlie Whitehurst (Seattle); 3) Matt Moore vs. Chad Henne (Miami); 4) Tim Tebow vs. Kyle Orton (Denver); 5) Cam Newton vs. Jimmy Clausen (Carolina). “When a quarterback was drafted high, veteran quarterbacks would say, ‘Wait a minute, he hasn’t played a down. I’ve made three pro bowls and I make less than him?’ It was nonsensical in some ways but you couldn’t blame the top picks or their agents for getting what they could… Appropriately, we’re now in a system where if you play well in your rookie contract, you will benefit from it.” –NFL AgeNT dAvid duNN, on the new collective bargaining agreement

Before the 2011 MLB season began, the Boston Red Sox, Chicago White Sox, Atlanta Braves and Philadelphia Phillies were chosen by Fanatic to meet in the LCS, with the Red Sox and Braves facing off in the World Series. After four months of intense play, we’ll only slightly amend that prediction with the New York Yankees getting the White Sox’s spot. But contrary to popular thought, we’ll stick with the Red Sox and surprise Braves in the Danica Fall Classic…that is, of course, if Dan patrick Uggla can stay hot, Chipper Jones and Brian McCann can stay off the injured list and Michael Bourn can stay on the bases. “I would like for her to run fulltime, and I’m sure she is considering that, and I think she would enjoy it. I feel confident that she’s content where she is and happy with what we’re doing. I think things are looking positive for us to put something together.” Dale Earnhardt Jr., driver and co-owner of JP Motorsports, on the rumor of dANicA PATrick joining NASCAR fulltime And finally… Mark Teixeira has hit at least 30 HRs in each of his first three seasons with the Yankees. He joins Babe Ruth, Roger Maris and current teammate Alex Rodriguez as the only guys who can say that… Matt Howard, one of the catalysts behind Butler’s Cinderella tournament runs, will play his pro ball in Greece… As late as August 3, the Braves’ Dan Uggla had MLB’s longest hitting streak (24 games) and the National League’s lowest batting average (.212)… Former tennis No. 1 Thomas Muster, 43, is trying to become the oldest male to win an ATP match... A Joey Votto-for-Jose Bautista blockbuster trade was reportedly discussed before the July 31 deadline.

H

ow did you get into being a fight promoter? Why Atlanta? I was fortunate enough to attend a black tie professional boxing event back in 2001 here in Atlanta and I have been hooked ever since. There is no better live sport event, (in my option), than professional boxing. Since about that time Atlanta has been void of a quality live professional boxing events. We are very fortunate to have had three straight sold-out events this year and we believe that boxing fans are starting to realize that we have some pretty good boxers and boxing venues in this town.

What is the Georgia Boxing Championship? What does it entail? The Georgia Boxing Championship is a professional boxing series produced by Sports Fan Properties and Shea Bailey Promotions. The GBC is in essence our regular season that is put on five times a year and then culminates in The Big Rock Out on December 2, 2012 the night before the SEC Football Championship at the GA World Congress Center. The Big Rock Out is our version of the Super Bowl and include a live band performance, in addition to the best boxers in the Southeast putting it all on the line. www. thebigrockout.com Tell us about the boxers who have participated. Those who will be participating August 26. Most of the main event and co-main even boxers that you will see in the Georgia Boxing Championship, you will also see on ESPN, Showtime and HBO. There are no “minor Leagues” in boxing, so boxers such as Paul Delgado, Tyrese Hendrix, Antonio Davis and Zahir Raheem, all world-class boxers many of whom have competed for major world titles have all competed in our events. The Aug 26th show will be no different and we are working on a card that will once again showcase the best professional boxers in GA and around the Southeast.

Photo by greg Barkhoff (sports fan Properties) For a complete list of boxers and more information, visit www.georgiaboxingchampionship.com What can people expect from your event? People that attend our event can expect a Vegas-style professional boxing experience with a lot of action. These events are very social and about 35% of our audience are women. Children 17 and under are allowed as long as they are accompanied by an adult. The atmosphere and mix of people is very similar to what you might find at Falcons or Braves game. Our goal is to be know as the hometown professional boxing franchise and with promotional partners such as 680 The Fan, Xfinity, Olympus Media and Insite Magazine, word of mouth is quickly spreading. Tell us about your new home; The Buckhead Theatre. Our new venue, The Buckhead Theatre (formerly know as the Coca-Cola Roxy) has recently undergone a $6 million upgrade, which include the expansion of the main floor. The place feels brand new and our fans reacted very positively at our July 15th show. We had a huge walk-up and the after party experience is perfect, with about 20 bars all within walking distance. Where can people go to purchase tickets? Tickets to the event start at only $25. So for tickets and all your GBC information, visit: www.georgiaboxingchampionship.com You can also become a Fan of the “Georgia Boxing Championship” on Facebook and you will receive regular updates and special offers.
