EDITORIAL After the holiday. Welcome back to the school. This holiday, we have been struggling with the news on media. We just received an e-mail from the school concerning the coronavirus epidemic. Everyone should read it and follow the instructions and make sure everyone is healthy. Let’s hope there is a vaccine for that soon and we are done with it. Anyways, the week before the holiday, a Maltese man walked on these lands, Luke Vella. He visited our school to see what is going on in this side of the world about education and I had the chance to have an interview with him. Quick tip, the ones that like warm weather, you have a chance to go to Malta and swim in the Mediterranean on January. I have done it myself and it is not even a rare thing in there. Also, you could swim in the midnight every night and people wouldn’t be staring at you. Warning, the sea is a bit salty, be careful.
Joonatan has given us insights about a space game called Starsector. I have never played it and probably not going to but the review is positive, so if you are interested in space things, you should give it a look. The Peanut Butter Falcon, with a weird name, is somehow a good movie obviously, and Prakhar is going to tell us all about it. He loves to go to see the movies in the movie theater. He actually works very hard to write all these good reviews so he doesn’t lose his spot on writing the movie reviews. Press F to pay your Respect. The lessons are getting somehow more and more tough. Anna was in Sweden for a while on this holiday. She is going to let us know about Stockholm, One More Time! Stockholm syndrome is actually a real thing and it is important. When people see something happen, they do not react because they think someone else will call the police or ambulance or give any kind of reaction, so they do nothing. Don’t get Stockholm syndrome.

Meet a Maltese teacher!
Is it your favorite? Lecturing? Yes. It is my favorite job so far. It is something which not like every time I go to work, I just go out meet friends. My students, I consider them to "Fragments"series of be my friends because that’s the best relationship paintings with your students I think. It doesn’t feel like I am going to work at all. What is the motivation for you to become a good teacher? There is nothing more satisfying than seeing my students graduate. And it only takes that 1 student to come up to me to tell me ‘thank you for all you have done with me. You have really helped me’ And that is what keeps me going. It is better than giving me a monetary bonus. It is something which you can not buy. And the fact that I see students looking at me as though I am their role model, it is something which comes with a great responsibility. And even when you have students asking you ‘sir, is this what I should do for a job or friendship. They look at me as though I am their friend not lecturer. That’s the most motivating factor you can have in a job. Could you introduce yourself please. I am Luke Vella. I am from Mqabba, Malta. It is south part of Malta. I am 30 years old. I am lecturer in MCAST University in Malta. I was previously an economist tot he Central Bank of Malta and I use to work in Real Estate. I used to sell properties and rent properties. I was also marketing manager of a very big company called ReMax. It is an international brand. Part of my job at Mcast involves teaching subjects related to economics and financial services. I teach first, second and third years in the course of Financial services management. My full time job is Lecturer. 4
What are you doing here at XAMK right now? I am looking at the different teaching methods. That Xamk teachers adopt. It is a known fact that Finnish education system is the best in Europe. So it only stands to reason that us, Maltese want to learn from the best. However, funnily enough, I realized that most of the practices that we do in Malta are very similar to what you do here in Finland. So it helped me reinforce what I do at my University. But at the same time, it also gave me insights to new techniques that other teachers use. For example, in Sara’s lecture, when you were doing the presentations, it is something I don’t usually give students to do. But I think it is
LUKE VELLA a good learning method and I will definitely will be including it on my classroom. So, that’s the main reason why I am here, not because of the weather definitely. I came here to see what lecturers are doing and try to adapt to techniques. Moving on to personal questions, What is your favorite book? My favorite book would be The Stranger of Harlan Coben. It is also a series on Netflix. What is your favorite movie? I like all the James Bond movies, I find them interesting. But I generally like series more than the series. My favorite series are Game Of Thrones. Did you enjoy any local food here? The food is good here but nothing compared to Maltese food. Which countries have you visited for the project that brought you here? This is the first Erasmus project I am in. Which countries did you visit? Which ones did you like most? I have been in many countries and my favorite country would be Switzerland. It is the most perfect country I have visited. Who is your inspiration? Anyone who is better than me is an inspiration. But I do not have one particular.
Did you have much conversations with students here? What do you think? Yes and no. I mean, I had conversations with students mostly through the activity we were doing in Sara’s class. And the students are very, very knowledgeable about the subject they are learning. Do you see any difference between your students and here? Oh, definitely. Maltese people are in general very loud. We are loud, we like to talk a lot and we like to voice our opinions a lot. And our students are exactly the same. If I start a point of discussion, I need to try to stop them because they will keep on talking. That is different. Very very different. Sometimes over here I saw it difficult for the teacher to engage with students and start talking and having conversation. Apparently, it is worse with Finnish Students. In Malta, it is completely different. One last question, How is this trip going to effect you back in Malta? Honestly, I intend to integrate what we do in MAST with over here. And I intentionally want to start doing lectures in Malta for our students and having a Skype session with your class to share the lesson. I intend to try to do that because it is fantastic. It would be a different kind of event. What do you think about The Insider? I think that this magazine is great and it’s a great initiative for you students to expose your work.

Stockholm Syndrome
Sweden is the most environmentally friendly and the most innovative country according some people, the coldest and the wildest place according others. So, what is the true about the capital of this Scandinavian nation? From the first moment tourists stepped out from the ferry on the Swedish ground they can immediately feel crystal clear air and bright sunshine reflecting in the river. However, while walking further to the central parts of the city there is a significant contrast of landscapes. Right now, there are many building processes are conducted in the central directs together with renovation of old buildings. That is why, it is better to be prepared for extreme hustle and bustle and noise in the centre. Big city life. Homeless people are sitting right on the ground and begging for a few crones while some people right at the opposite side of the street are “driving� in different directions using the most innovative means of transport which for foreigners can be only known

from sci-fi films. Speaking about transport, in Stockholm there are many buses covering all possible routes, as well as metro and trains which work almost non-stop. However, day-transport ticket costs 105 crones (10â‚Ź), which is quite expensive even after living in Finland. However, for tourists who enjoy walking a lot - the Old Town is a great destination where they can experience a different from city life atmosphere of old and middle-aged designed restaurants, souvenir stores and traditional churches. Undoubtedly, there are many cafes and restaurants according any taste located everywhere. But as it was mentioned above: prices are the same or even higher than in Finland and some other European cities. And what about night life? There are many options of local bars and clubs variating from the 80-90-s music or pop as well as underground and techno places. However, most of them have very strict

RECIPE Casserole Ingredients (for 6 servings): • • • • • • • •
1 kg of cottage cheese 3 large eggs or 4 small 150 g sugar (7 tablespoons with a small top) 6 tbsp decoys + 1 tablespoon for sprinkling molds(form) 4 tbsp raisins 50 g butter + 1 tbsp. to lubricate the mold(form) a small pinch of salt 1 sachet of vanillin or 2 sachets of vanilla sugar

REVIEW The Peanut Butter Falcon The sweetest movie you'll watch What is the first thing that comes in your mind when you get to know that Shia LeBeouf and Dakota Johnson are acting in the same movie? Well, sorry for breaking your heart but its not something dark, sci-fi or seductive. Well at least not in The Peanut Butter Falcon as it follows the story of 22-year-old, Zac portrayed by Zack Gottsagen, suffering from down syndrome and the harshness of the society while being kept at an assisted living facility. The story is a modern retelling of Huckleberry Finn but rather focuses on Zac’s journey from escaping the facility, when he tries to fulfill his dream of becoming a professional wrestler. Even though the direction by Tyler Nilson and Michael Schwartz is good and the film maintains a specific theme throughout, yet this movie is gets more appreciation for the class acting done by many talented actors aforementioned. It feels good to see Shia LeBeouf, who portrays Tyler, helping a 22-year-old down syndrome patient to live his dream and feel ‘normal’ instead of a 22ft tall alien robot (for what he is known for). Dakota Johnson just adds to it with her brilliance and thus they are successful in keeping a smile on the audience’s face throughout its 1hr 37min runtime. As for cons, there might be some scenes that are just there to suit the style of the movie and really add much to it so The movie has all the feels and it’s a sure thing that even if you walk-in without having much expectations, at the end of the movie, there will be nothing but a big smile on your face. So, if you’re tired of watching serious dramas with dark plots and not-so-happy endings, this one might just be the one to make you feel lighter and cheerful.
