Editorial Take responsibility seriously, We all have responsibilities that we need to accept during life. Sometimes we are also responsible for others. These responsibilities can be mundane such as being responsible for our home environment by washing the dishes or the responsibility for care by looking after a loved one. In the news we see responsibility shown in current affairs such as the Brexit fiasco – ‘if you voted out then get out’ is something that is often directed towards the people of Britain – possibly rightly so. Currently, in Finland, the general elections are taking place and with it our responsibility for influencing the future of Finland. Many people take their responsibilities seriously whilst some do not. Where do you fit in?

For students, responsibilities can be seen on many levels. On the one hand, students are responsible for their daily lives, cooking, cleaning, etc.

For many they are living away from home for the first time with no-one looking after their daily needs – even the responsibility of getting up in the morning and going to studies can seem like a mundane chore. This is where the attitude to responsibility must be taken seriously if you want to

succeed.

As a student, you are wholly responsibly for what happens in your studies. It starts with registration for the courses that you are going to study each semester, turning up for contact sessions, completing tasks, taking exams – and planning for resits if necessary. Finding a training place, coming up with a thesis topic, carrying out the research, presenting your final work – nobody else is going to do any of this on your behalf – remember you choose to take the study place, so also take the responsibility for the chance you have been given.

It still seems like a heavy burden, right? Well remember, although your studies are your responsibility, there are still those that are here to help you, and if not there to share the burden, at least help you cope with your responsibility. Your classmates are usually the closest people to you during your study life, and it is said a “problem shared is a problem halved” – it can at least feel better talking about it in the open. Your lecturers are approachable, talk to them whenever you need guidance or advice in completing study units. Your studies coordinator/counsellor is also available for you to discuss anything with, and to help you plan your studies all the way through your study time. Other members of the well-being team of Xamk can also listen to you if you are facing problems in your responsibilities, so make use of them also.

My main message here is that you have chosen to step up and take responsibility for one stage of your life – that is to study for a degree – just like the potential students that have applied to Xamk this spring, some of whom you can read about this week. Take the responsibility seriously and be responsible for your actions – don’t waste your chances. You are our future leaders, shapers, and movers – in that way you will have the responsibility for the rest of us in the future.

Store of Legends PANSSARIMUSEO The military history museum is located in the town of Parola, 10 km from the town of Hämeenlinna, Finland opened on 18th of June in 1961. Here is collected, a rich collection of tank (and anti-tank) technology more than 90 pieces of equipment, one third - on the go!

A large part of the museum’s exposition is Soviet tanks captured during the war or purchased during the period of the Treaty on Cooperation and Mutual Assistance. In the museum’s collection there are tanks T-26, T-28, T-34, T-50, KV-1. In addition to them there are French, English, American, German and Finnish armoured vehicles.

The existing equipment of the museum participated in various parades, performances, filming, historical reconstructions of the events of the Second World War. The book about the museum provides a number of interesting facts. For example, during the Soviet-Finnish war of 1939-1940 and during the Great Patriotic War from 1941 to 1944. Finns captured about 630 Soviet tanks.

Of these, the Finns subsequently used about 150 tanks and 50 armoured vehicles. According to Finnish calculations during this time they destroyed more than 3,600 Soviet tanks. Most of them - more than 2,200 tanks - in the Winter War. I really like this museum, because it is a part of history for our countries, which we remember, and so that it does not happen again. I can give an advice to visit this museum!

Entrance Examination This week, I took my time to pay some attention to entrance exam for International Business bachelor programme. Last year, I was quite excited about it when I was taking the exam and now, I had a chance to see that other people are even more excited.

I Talked to few of the candidates and they seem legit. They came from different places of Finland, also met 1 person from Kosovo. He has been living in Finland for 3 years now, so he is adapted to the country. He decided it is time to take the next step in here and he is here. One of the Finnish guys were already a student here. He said that he studied here already 3 years ago but he had to quit to get a job, now he has the economy again to invest on his education again. The Finnish girl I talked was a bit shy maybe, or she was nervous because of the exam but she seemed quite ready for the examination. There was another girl that I tried to talk but she wasn’t so willing to talk with me. All I got from her was that she is really hoping to get in to study in here.

On the following 2 days, there was examination for the Game Design studies. Quite many people attended for game design as well which we might meet next year.

Next year is probably going to be a very international group as well as it seems. The people I talked to had prepared for the exam quite well, at least more than I did which means they are probably going to get in but there was 2 days examination this year for some reason, so I did not see the people in the first day. I asked few of them why they want to study here, and answers were actually nice. It seemed like they have a plan for their future.

I am hoping to see many young intellectual students next year.

Lectures about Africa Last week we had a unique opportunity to learn more about culture of Africa from Marta Debska – the lecturer, teaching in Andrzej Frycz Modrzewski Krakow University of Poland. Her lectures were a great combination of historical, economical and cultural view on this exotic continent. We have discussed Importance of Africa on international scene in 21st century, EU-Africa relations and Chinese & Indian activities in this region.

After fascinating lecture about Cotonou Partnership Agreement, I had a chance to ask Marta about her experience in discovering this mysterious land: Why are you so interested in studying African region?

Ever since I can remember, I have been always passionate about Africa. I have been teaching history and culture of this region for many years at my home university. The most blow-minding things for me is how culture and mentality of African people are different from Europeans’. Year by year, my interest in African studies is getting deeper.

Did you have a chance to visit Africa?

Yes, I have travelled to the Northern part of the continent, but only as a tourist. Now my target is also to visit the South part and participate in scientific expedition.

Why do you think people should not be afraid of ruining stereotypes and learning more about this topic?

Today in our interconnected and high-developed world, Africa is not that far away, as we used to imagine, it is more far in our minds. We should get away from our prejudice & expectations and be open to explore new things.

What are your predictions about the future of African region?

African population is very young and, therefore, very potential. In the past few years European countries have realized that they must be more involved in the development of this region, e.g. invest in social improvement programmes and develop educational system. Countries should cooperate, but only on equal rights.

Are you planning to continue your studies about this amazing land?

Undoubtedly. I want to promote my knowledge and experience among younger generations, and I hope that students’ thirst for knowledge will get bigger and bigger.

KASKI AND OTHER BEERS Except for my great passion for food, I couldn’t imagine my life without beer. As Czechs say, “beer is a liquid bread”. And I can’t argue with that. It is hard to find a country where beer hasn’t been a part of history and culture as a whole. Indeed, it is one of the best ways to socialize and meet new people. There is a whole deep world hidden in this magical drink and every good beer has a great story behind it.

In this article, I would like to open a world of Kaski to my readers. Kaski beer is brewed in the Takatalo and Tompuri Brewery which is located in the village of Ravijärvi surrounded with a splendid landscape. The name “Kaski” actually comes from the early beginning of the Kaski beer history and means “swidden or slash and burn”, since the land for Takatalo and Tompuri estate was created by cutting down and burning trees in order to produce nutrient-rich soil for agricultural use. With a first sip of Kaski you dive in atmosphere of moisture breathing land after the rain in the early morning, when the sun is just about to rise above the horizon and fog is spreading carefully around, filling every corner of the forest.

Favourable and mouth-watering taste of Kaski is reached by using barleys, oats and water from Takatalo and Tompuri farm. They currently have nine different types of beer from tradition smooth light-coloured lager “Pills” to “Kylmäsavulager” – cold smoked lager with an alluring smoky-sweet flavour. “Kylmäsavulager” was nominated as Finnish best light lager in 2017. Kaski has recently released a new kind of beer – “Mustakaura” or black oats. It has a broad malt aroma with rye bread aftertaste.

Even though there are several microbreweries in Finland, for me the Story, History and Taste of Kaski beer is very unique and authentic. Some could even say that when the drop of this “National treasure from Vironlahti” touches your tongue, it is a true love from the first sip.

Kaski`s slogan is “Aina on pantu” which is translated as “Always been brewing”. In good sooth, even though Mikko and Juha, Kaski farmers, have started their brewery a few years ago, it feels like they truly have an expertise and experience how good beer should be made!

Enjoy your summer with a bottle of cold Kaski in your hand!

SEE Universal Studio (app. 52€) is one of the best theme parks in the world. There are games and activities that are beyond your imagination. This is a must-see destination.

Garden by the Bay (app. 18€) is the human-created tropical forest-like garden. The green space in the heart of the city will astonish with its beauty and the great achievement of human beings in bio-technology.

S.E.A Aquarium (app. 27€) guides you to the breathtaking underwater realm with over 100,000 kinds of water creatures. Moreover, it is the largest aquarium in Southeast Asia.

Singapore Zoo (app. 27€) is home to more than 2,800 animals and 300 species. You can interact with and observe them in open habitats and through glass observatories.

Yo u s a y g o o d b y e , I say hello We are gathered here today to share a very sad news for a few of us. Since you all know the need of this semester is close and that means that some of us need to say goodbye to Insider forever! Not only to Insider, but also to XAMK in general. Anyway, as much as this creates a deep void in my soul, I need to remind you that we should remember Insider as a nice experience and cherish all the moments that we spent together. We have learned so much here not only about writing articles, making the layout, but also, we have learned about each other’s culture. Making new friends here that I will have contact with even after I leave Finland is one of the best things that happened to me in Insider.

Except the sad news, we want to let you know that we want you to become part of Insider! Since a lot of us are leaving or finishing our studies we need more editors to become part of Insiders. Do not get me wrong Insider will keep thriving even after we leave, but for that we need your help! Antti Leppilampi It was one of the first sunny and warm spring days in Kouvola, when Antti and I grabbed cups of coffee in Paja and had our conversation. A few minutes after we took a seat, Antti has noticed electro piano standing in the corner: About 4 years ago, when I was a student in Mikkeli we had Hard rock band and even though we were playing cover songs all the time, we were feeling ourselves like a real Rock stars. *laughs* Once it was a student party and we were playing there, we didn’t sleep at all and went to the lessons next day… Funny days.

I can imagine, it should have been a real challenge for you. As I know, you are working in XAMK right now. Are you planning to stay here?

Now I think to study master’s degree. The only problem is how to mix up working time and studies.

Besides, I have not decided yet about my specialization. I have always loved international environment and participation in such projects as StartUp Passion. That is why I think I will study International Business. One of my dreams is to work abroad and IB can hep me with that.

You have mentioned StartUp Passion Project, can you share some background story about StartUp Passion?

This project has been started in 2015 and I have joined them in 2018. In the beginning my job was to be ‘Social Media Guy’ to get the atmosphere of the competition through the social media. Moreover, I was also invited to help with teams. Soon we have realized that using social media is very perspective.

That is how an idea about making the film about the project came out, we wanted to make it educational and funny for students at the same time.

Honestly, I really loved the film, because I felt the real spirit of ‘start-up world’.

Thank you so much. It was a very creative, but challenging process. I think if the project goes exactly how it plans it can be a failure then. Tomorrow can change everything.

What was your favourite moment while working on this project?

One of the biggest learnings for me was to know all these great and determined students. Unfortunately, sometimes people do not realize their full potential. One of the biggest motivations for me is to help students find out what they can be.

Now you are working on the new project: StartUp Connect. Can you say a few words about it?

The idea of this project is to make students solve real business problems in a team. Besides, if we see that one team works very well together, and students have innovative and creative ideas, we can help them to form a new start-up.

Will it be multinational project, involving students from different countries?

Yes, we are cooperating with ITMO University. I did not know that before, but in Russia, especially Saint Petersburg, people actively participate in start-ups, and hype around it is getting bigger. That is why, we want to start make more and more projects together.

Do you have any hobbies for stress relief after a busy work day?

I play guitar and piano. Besides, I like to go to gym, play badminton & squash. When I play or exercise, I feel more energized. My other passion, almost a hobby, is chocolate.

So, you are like a chocoholic? *laughs* yes, kind of…

As you said, sport helps you to feel more powerful and energetic. What are other advantages of sport trainings for you?

It saves me from procrastination. For example, when I am sitting on my couch, watching Netflix (I love Netflix), and feeling tired or even depressed. The best thing is to get up and go to the gym. After even 15 mins training this mood always goes away. It was one of the greatest learnings for me.

Who inspires you the most?

From my close circle, I would say my sister. She always brings light into the room, and she is one of the most energized person I know.

What is your life moto?

“Optimist never gets disappointed”, because optimist always sees the bright side.

Game of Thrones: Winterfell

The final season of arguably the best TV-show ever is here! The season took two years, unlike all previous ones, to film and authors as well as actors promise the audience something unforgettable. Winterfell starts the countdown that consists of six episodes, and it is the shortest one – only lasts for 54 minutes! Some episodes will be 80 minutes long so be sure you have enough snacks and patience to go through all of them! So, what happened in the most expected TV-episode of 2019?

Well, basically nothing important. Jon and Daenerys, as well as all their armies, squires, and the two remaining dragons arrived in Winterfell, which was a nice touch to the first episode ever, where Robert Baratheon did the same thing and the locals were in awe. After that, a discussion about the upcoming fight against the walking dead happened, and we could see that Sansa does not really like the Mother of Dragons. All the family reunions – the Starks, the Greyjoys – have happened, which is a nice thing as we won’t have to follow ten story threads every episode. As for now, we only have three locations: Winterfell with all the remaining Starks, Daenerys, Tyrion, Varys, Jaime and all their friends and comrades; King’s Landing, where Theon somehow freed Yara who was kept on the flagman ship of a great fleet, and Euron thrusted Cersei hard; and beyond the Wall where Beric Dondarrion with his flaming sword tries to help Tormund and other wildlings outrun the Night King’s army.

For reasons unknown, Bran and Sam decided that there is not going to be a better time than before the imminent battle where everybody needs Dothraki and dragons and told Jon that he is Aegon Targaryen, and he basically had incest with Daenerys (which is not uncommon amongst that house and.. well, in Westeros). What is Jon going to do with the information? Unknown. The Night King sent his regards in the form of a dead boy who was not so much dead after all, so Beric had to burn him… alive? In the big picture, that was all. Nothing else major happened in the episode, besides that awkward moment when Jaime and Bran saw each other for the first time since, you know…

Winterfell was the first episode after two years so we weren’t really expecting anything huge to happen. Yet, it managed to grab all those things that were so good and deliver a strong opening. Now all that’s left is wait and see how it all plays out!
