EDITORIAL

Welcome / Ẹ kaaabọ o, This is my first editorial for this year 2019, and I am super excited about this. It is already the end of January and I would just like to ask you this question, what have you achieved so far? You might say that it is too early to ask this question and you may even feel like telling me; “Chill for once Lizzy”. It is so crazy to see that one month is already gone in this new year. Do you have any new year resolutions? You might even say resolutions are crap now but let me say it this way “What would you have done better in 2018 that you are willing to implement this new year? Think about it. You would want to graduate this year, increase your GPA, travel and alongside study, exercise more, talk less, do more useful and helpful things, be helpful to your loved ones, encourage and support your friends, pursue a dream career, etc keep naming it.

It is TIME to do IT. Remember, time waits for no one. Do not let Procrastination be your friend this year.

It is surely an amazing year for Insider, as we are growing. Indeed, it is very amazing to see new Writers joining the team. There have been a lot of events happening already at our Campus here in Kouvola. We had the “Hobby Day in our Campus in Kouvola. Discover Paivi who is very keen on Cosplay. Do you know what Cosplay is?

I am very proud of you both that you are done with this big step in your degree program. In this issue, you will get a chance to read about Marija’s article as she exposes the ups and downs of Co-writing her thesis. Try Trang’s oven Roasted Brussels Sprouts recipe this winter and give us a feedback about this.

If you are moving to your second year at Xamk, you have the change to go for an Erasmus exchange program. We know that choosing a country for your exchange program could be difficult. INTERESTING FACTS about world-famous brands

The NIKE sign isn't a tick or check mark. Originally called BRS (Blue Ribbon Sports), the company was renamed after Nike, the winged Greek goddess of victory. The famous "swoosh" symbol that's been its logo ever since represents her wings and speed.

Salvador Dali the Catalonian painter who brought us all those weird melting clocks. He designed the logo for CHUPA CHUPS, and it has remained virtually unchanged since 1969. So every time you buy a Chupa Chups you know you’re getting a unique piece of art for your mouth.

The painter designed the wrapper while having lunch with Enric Bernat, who insisted that the logo appear on the top of the wrapper and not the side.

Roy and Walt Disney filmed their first animated movie in their uncle’s one-car garage. Today, THE WALT DISNEY COMPANY is the highest-grossing media conglomerate in the world that produces movies and owns theme parks and TV channels.

The site was actually named "Googol", which meant the number represented by 1 followed by 100 zeros. A story says that the founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page got a check of this amount from an investor, and they decided to name the company as Googol. But while registering the domain name, the word GOOGLE was written. And that's how it became their company's name. Interesting!

The Italian brand was famous in the past with the name ALFA that is actually an acronym for Anonima Lombarda Fabrica Automobil. Years later when ALFA was bought by Nicola Romeo, it was added his surname in the brand name.

This coffee giant was named after STARBUCK, a character in the novel Moby-Dick. Founders thought the name evoked the romance of the high seas and the seafaring tradition of the early coffee trader.

HOBBY DAY AT XAMK Are you currently looking for a new hobby? Last Wednesday, on the 23. of January there was an event in the entrance hall where several activity groups presented their associations, groups or activities.

The biggest eyecatcher of the event was Paivi, a fashion & costume student at XAMK. She presented the performance art Cosplay, the art of dressing yourself as your favorite movie, comic, videogame or tv show character. Since 2009 she is active in the Cosplay Scene and creating, sewing, designing from two to three costumes per year. On Wednesday she was dressed up as Julia Fernandez, one of her favorite characters. Her reason to be representative of Cosplay on that day was not only to enforce people to participate in the Cosplay Scene but also to get everyone more familiar with this fascinating hobby of her. If you are interested in joining there can almost every month a convention in Finland be found. The Cosplay Community is always happy to see new faces.

Her sister, Satu, presented the group “Street Fashion Finland”. That group is active since 2017 and was founded to share and experience the hobby of creating and expressing individual styles together. There are annual meet ups where you can get in touch with the people that share the interest in clothing and creating unique. On their blog https://streetfashionfinland.blogspot.com/ you can find all the information about meetings as well as practical do-it-yourself tips and they are also active on snapchat, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Youtube.

If you are just looking for a group of women that meet several times per year the group “Into Martat” will be the perfect group for you.

From doing sports, dancing together to creating green smoothies – there are activities for everyone. The annual fee is 40€ and if you are interested in joining them you can attend their first meeting in February where you will decide together with the other team members which actions will happen in 2019! To stay update about meetings you can join their Facebook group “Intomartat ry, Kouvola”.

In case you are looking for a new sport: at the local basketball team Kouvot has a special offer at the moment, for 60€ instead of 100€ you can participate in the team until the end of May as well as visit a basketball game. No matter if your basketball skills are advanced or if you are completely new to it - they are always happy to welcome new members who like to throw some balls. More information can be found on their homepage www.kouvot.fi.

The new Campus Chaplain Aino Laine was also present. She wanted to show the activities she offers for young adults: every Thursday they meet at 8 in the evening behind the main church in Kouvola to have some fun together and talk about daily topics but also sometimes read the bible or discuss some topics related to it. Regardless of your confession you are more than welcome to join the conversations. Aino Laine is also happy to welcome you every Tuesday and Thursday at her office in room 304 at Xamk or around the campus.

PROFILE Tereza Lopatářová

How many countries have you visited?

Location of the Czech Republic is quite good for traveling within Europe. I have been to Germany, Austria, Poland, Slovak, France, Italy, Croatia, Romania, Hungary, Netherlands, Ireland, Estonia, Latvia, Sweden and I have spent four months in Leeds (Great Britain) as an au-pair.

What is your name and where are you from?

My name is Tereza Lopatarova and I come from the Czech Republic.

What did you study in Czech Republic?

I have a Bachelor degree in Education. I have studied at South Bohemian University in Czech Budweis.

What do you study at Xamk?

At XAMK, I am studying International Business.

What are the big differences in living in Finland and Czech Republic?

Finnish winters are colder, winter days shorter and distances longer. One big difference I notice especial during winter time is that people don’t let snow or cold stop them from their activities. For instance, last year for the first time, I was commuting to school by bike whole year. From student point of view, I would say that Finnish students have better living standards, as they get money from the government, so they can afford to live on their own. In Czech Republic students usually live in shared flats.

Why did you choose Finland for studies?

I didn’t choose Finland, Finland choose me. I came here because of my Finnish boyfriend and since I didn’t speak any Finnish, I decided to study it and get local education at the same time to increase my career opportunities here.

What do you like about Finland so far?

I like Finnish food, coffee, sauna and great cross-country skiing opportunities.

What is your favorite Finnish food?

My favorite food is Lohikeitto. It is called Salmo food in English.

What are your future plans after studying here at Xamk?

I hope I will graduate soon and find job here in Finland.

Who inspires you the most?

At the moment, I am most inspired by people who managed to master Finnish language and found interesting and fulfilling job here.

How do you cope with Finnish winter?

Winter dark is sometimes tiring, but I am doing quite lot of sports, which cheers me up. For me, the most important is to keep myself warm and surrounded by candles and lights. Sauna helps a lot.

COWRITING THESIS Hi there again!

It has been a while since I wrote my last article for Insider, actually this is the first time you will be reading something written from me for this new semester. Of course my absence is very well justified and it has to do with this article as well.

You know what time it is? It is the time that every student is very stressed about.

Thesis time!! Yeah you heard it right, me Marija is almost done with her studies and her thesis. My thesis is special though, not only because it is me who is writing it LOL, but also because I have a co writer. I suppose that most of you do not know that you can co write your thesis with someone of your choice. I decided to do that with my friend Swan. As fun as it might be and it might sound easier, believe me it is not. Writing the thesis with someone else is harder.

First of all you have to decide how you are going to write it: if each person will have his or her separate part or if you are going to do it together. For us the best choice was to do everything together, of course the theoretical part could have been done separately, but the rest was done together. This way it looks like only one person wrote it and trust me that is very challenging.

When it comes to the separate parts, you always need to read and learn the part that your co writer wrote. The whole point of the thesis is for you to learn new things and know everything that is written there. There can be cases that one of the writers might have made a mistake so the other writer can fix it.

After you are done with one chapter you should read it out loud to each other. This way you can notice all the grammatical mistakes that might be there.

Sometimes it is even better to get a third reader because that person might notice the mistakes better. Another thing coming from us, the moment that you use a source reference it right away. Do not leave it for the end because it is too much and there is a higher chance that you will miss something and mess it up.

Create a Google drive or an online outlook file so you can both edit at the same time and see what the other is doing. Try to make a time table so at least both of you write at least 2 h a day so you do not leave everything for the end. Trust me you do not want that, been there done that and later I was so tired I could not even English.

An extra advice: use do not instead of don’t. Avoid all these shortening and try not to use pronouns din your thesis. As excited that I am that I am almost done with the thesis I know I will miss it and still I wish I did some things differently. Anyway, good luck to all of you there that are writing your thesis and see you soon!

6 REASONS WHY

you should choose France for studies or Erasmus Forget about the “YellowVests crisis'. Every country has its own ups and downs. Here are 6 reasons you should choose France for studies or Erasmus.

YOU HAVE A LOT TO EXPLORE You will not just be studying, you have a lot of things to see. You will get a chance to visit Paris. The Tour Eiffel, Le Louvre, Les Champs Elysée, Notre Dame de Paris, Eglise Saint Etienne de mont, etc. France is a very touristic county, I would advise you to visit the French countryside as well (experience the French Touch).

There are amazing places to visit. Lille "the capital of innovation in France", to see the most beautiful beach in the north, get up to Dunkirk to see "Malo- les- Bains" beach. I can only tell you about places that I have visited but do feel free to explore. Also, visit Normandy, Nice, Strasbourg, Montpellier, Toulouse, Marseille, etc.

LEARN ABOUT THE FRENCH EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM Depending on wherever you are from, the French education is very interesting. You would get the chance to meet amazing teachers and professors, learn on your own and do a lot of independent work. Teachers have special methods for their courses, so I would advise you to "do your project works or assignments by following your professors' advices". There are lots of project works and independent work to be done. This would give you a chance to develop your own ideas and probably integrate them into several of your group works.

TRY THE FRENCH CUISINE In every single country you travel to, there is something people eat that is weird. In Finland, they eat Reindeer, in Nigeria, they eat cow skin and legs, France isn't an exemption, French people eat Frogs Legs. Yes, you just read that. Eat the most popular French bread 'les baguettes' for breakfast, try Boeuf Bourguignon, La Quiche Lorraine, etc. If you have the chance to visit Dunkirk, try the French Waffles 'Gauffres Dunkerquoise'. It is best one that you will ever find.

LEARN AND SPEAK FRENCH Anglophones are always afraid of even travelling to France because of the language barrier not to even talk about coming over for studies. As an English speaker, I found it really hard at first. But come to think

of it, French people will not speak English to you. Why? You are in France and remember we speak French here that is all.

The most interesting thing is that you will adapt very quickly as this will push you to learn vocabularies in French. Moreover, there are millions of words in the French language that often has the same meaning but not the same pronunciation.

FRENCH VISAS WILL BE EASIER TO GET The French government, Emmanuel Macron has promised that there will be more funds and investments into French Universities. Hence a lot of English courses will be introduced next year. These courses will be taught by in English. Students outside the EU mainly get admission through 'Campus France'. https://www.campusfrance.org/fr. Depending on where you are, change the language section to your country official language and follow the guidelines. Erasmus students should follow guidelines from their home universities. Information concerning the Erasmus grants will be provided. The monthly rate for Erasmus studies is 270€ while for Internship is 390€. You may even get more depending on the allocation given to your Home University.

LOVE DO NOT KNOW BOUNDARIES Your future spouse may be French so, go for it. You can have the chance to meet new people and probably meet your future partner. Love do not know boundaries, colour type, background, etc.

To conclude, just keep calm “Explore La FRANCE and go for the adventure”!

FOOD CORNER: Haru Sushi Hey, everyone out there!

I must admit I love food and all the things related to it. Since the beginning of times the question that world is spinning about is a choice between sex or food. Honestly, I myself can’t come up to any final conclusion in this issue, but as far as I know food is one of the basic needs of any human, so let’s talk about it first.

From time to time I get a chance to waste money and stop by a few quite decent places to satisfy both my stomach and soul with a few climaxing tastes. So, I have decided to make a new article category in Insider some kind of “food corner” and write about my gourmet experiences.

Let’s go straight to the point! If you have a free weekend and you spontaneously have decided to make a short trip to Helsinki, I have prepared a list of restaurants and cafes to grab some food with your friends in between walking around the the city. One of the main advantages of those places is that all of them are located in a walking distance from Kamppi bus station or train station.

11-12€ on a week days. You can take anything you want and as mush as you want meaning cold and hot drinks, cakes, soups, salads and sushi.

Usually, me and my friends spent hours talking and taking a few rounds to the sushi table and then we kinda roll out from the restaurant since we are so full lol.

Haru gained 4,4 starts according to google ratings and from my point it fully deserves it. I assume Sushi in that place are one of the best, since that place is usually almost full especially during lunch time. It takes only five minutes walking from Kamppi. Here is the address of the place: Fredrikinkatu 30.

Place that I chose for this week is Haru. It is a tiny but enormously cozy place settled on the corner of crossroads. It is designed in a simple way equipped with several tables in the middle and along the wall and windows.

I found the last ones especially nice as you can enjoy your food and observe street life.

It is a Japanese restaurant and they mostly serve sushi there along with soups, salads and small deserts and drinks, of course. I recommend you going for a lunch, it costs around 15€ during the weekend and about

RECIPE: Oven Roasted Brussel Sprouts It has been a while since the last time I did a recipe on here (because I was back home eating out like crazy every week :P). For my come-back, I will bring you an extremely easy and hearty side dish for the winter, which is conveniently suitable, since we have like eight months of winter a year in Finland. Let’s jump right in the recipe!

INGREDIENTS: • • • • •

2 cups brussel sprouts 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard 1 tablespoon honey/maple syrup olive oil salt, pepper, ginger powder to taste

INSTRUCTIONS: Cut the brussel sprouts in half, place them on a baking tray lined with baking paper.

Season with salt, pepper and ginger powder (you can add cayenne pepper or garlic according to your liking, but I kept it simple with these seasonings).

Drizzle the brussel sprouts with olive oil, toss them around till all the brussel sprouts are evenly coated. Place them cut sides down into a 200 degrees Celsius oven for ~15 minutes.

When they are slightly golden, take them out of the oven and quickly drizzle on the mustard and honey while they are still hot.

Serve them with your main dish (preferably salmon or steak) or eat them as they are.

There you have it. A wholesome and flavorful dish which takes maximum 25 minutes to make. Make this the next time you want to add veggies to your meal but boiled broccolis have become too boring. I hope you enjoy this week’s recipe. See you on the next one!

GREEN BOOK

Movies about black people have become a hit or miss nowadays. The problem is that these films either show us how difficult it is to be black or… are just good. Not nominating a couple of “black” movies for Oscar would awaken protests against the Academy, let alone writing a negative review on those (whoopsie!).

And here we have another one, Green Book. The film, which is based on the real story happened in the 60s, tells us about Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali), an African-American jazz musician who is about to have a tour in Midwest and Southern states and needs to return to New York by Christmas. Don hires Frank Vallelonga aka Tony Lip (Viggo Mortensen) to be his driver and bodyguard. Frank has good reputation and now he is also armed with a copy of Green Book, a guide where you can find restaurants and motels where black people are treated well. The couple sets off for some amazing adventures!

Viggo Mortensen, who didn’t have any huge casts after his Arahorn in Lord of the Rings, is amazing. There are questions like, “why him?” but good old (and now really fat) Viggo plays his part as if it was his last chance to shine. You get a real delight watching him as an Italian bouncer. Mahershala Ali delivers as well. He was a really good villain in a Netflix Marvel-based TV-show Luke Cage; he didn’t even disappoint in an overall shitty Hunger Games series. Ali is a very good performer and you actually care for his Don Shirley here. That, and also real Frank Vallelonga as one of the writers, make the movie good plot-wise as well. Besides, you get beautiful views and a lot of witty dialogues throughout the two hours.

A very good drama and a glorious comedy, Green Book is a lot of fun to watch. It’s kind, compelling and beautiful in any possible meaning of this adjective. If black-related movies are hit or miss, this one is certainly a hit. It hasn’t happened for a while in Insider, but we finally get a film that deserves the best rating.
