I have recently had an interesting interview with Lehmusmetsä Timo From Kouvolan Innovation or Kinno. He has been working for ten years as a business advisory for start-ups in Kouvola. What kind of support services do you provide?
We provide advisory services for new businesses and start-ups. We also check business plan and help with calculations. Do I need to be a student of XAMK in order to get those services?
We provide our services for anyone who wants to start business in Kouvola. If you want to start business in any other city, there is our network all around Finland. We are almost the only network in Finland which provides advisory services for entrepreneurs. What are the main challenges for a foreign entrepreneur in Finland?
It is not that hard. There are a couple of challenges in my opinion. First one is getting working visa in Finland. Because they make decision about your business plan and calculations, checking if the business is profitable. It is always easy to make those calculations, but the business plan will be important thing that they believe that you can make those numbers. If you make a good business plan with a great idea and there is something you are really an expert, then I am quite sure that you will get it. Otherwise, another challenge is also a Finnish language. EXTRAORDINARY CAFES OF BUDAPEST
Here again? Happy to see you're still curious about my city! Today we're gonna meet one of the most extraordinary cafes in Budapest. Prepare yourself for weirdness! Welcome to Cat Cafe Budapest! Not that weird since the concept is growing everywhere around the world. However, some people are still amazed by dozens of fluffy companions during the coffee break. You should be ready for the prices to be higher than normal – a cappuccino will cost you 990 forints, which is 3-4 euros (yes, a normal price in Finland can be considered expensive in Hungary!). Not that much into cats but love other animals? Visit the Zoo Cafe! Besides cats, they have parrots, who freely fly around from time to time, spiders, snakes, iguanas, chameleons, turtles, rabbits, hedgehogs and many more! Together with your cup of coffee, you get someone to pet and you enjoy your drink together with the animal as long as you want or as long as the keeper changes your pet to a new one. A very amazing place to get some fluff energy. Our third and probably the last stop for today is the EPIC bar. Just a normal cocktail bar. But what's so special, you ask? It is insanely cheap! All the cocktails have the same price according to a day of the week. Sundays&Mondays – 890 Forints (less than 3 euro), Tuesdays, Wednesdays & Thursdays – 990 Forints, Fridays & Saturdays – 1090! Seems illegal after the prices in Finland and a perfect place to hang out when you're a student. 6

Emma Granqvist - Designer
Where are you from? I grew up in a Swedish speaking environment in the small town of Jakobstad. What do you study at Xamk? I am a second-year student of fashion and costume design. Tell us about your collection. The name of my fall/winter collection is Melisma and it contains both womenswear and menswear designs. My collection is inspired by Tribal house music and has a lot of influences from the African tribes. I wanted to find a balance between modern cuts and ethnicity, just like the music. Bold shapes, handprinted textiles and a richness of colours have a central part in my collection. Why did you choose Milan for your exchange program last year? Milan was an obvious choice, as it is the capital of fashion and a wonderful city in every way. Milan was a familiar place to me, since I have been there before at the MiFur-fair as a representative for my former school. I fell in love with the Italian culture already then and I knew I had to return.
I also felt tempted to study at IED, Instituto Europeo di Design, which is a high-standard university, known for its discipline. I was seeking for challenges and I knew Milan could offer me that. Where have your collections been displayed? My most important achievement so far, happened last year. My design took me to the finals of Frankfurt Style Award, which is an international fashion design competition with participants from all over the world. My unisex-design has after the contest been displayed in several places and occasions, including Paris and New York. My creative journey can be followed on my Instagram: emma_granqvist. What should we be expecting from you this international week? Two of my designs will be presented in the fashion show INTRO, which is taking place on Wednesday 18 pm. My chosen designs are creative, but still wearable and represent my personal style in terms of a wide range of colours, innovative silhouettes and high-quality. There will also be an exhibition in Paja building, where you can see my previous projects.

Anna Montforth – Exchange student
Where are you from? I am from Cologne, Germany What do you study at Xamk? I study International Business B.Sc. Why did you choose Xamk for studies? It is part of my study Programme to go abroad for one semester in my 3rd year. I decided to go to Finland because I wanted to get to know the highly appreciated Finnish school system and the Finnish culture. Furthermore, I love nature and rural areas, so Finland was the best choice for me. What do you miss about Germany? I definitely miss the German bread, German CafĂŠs, the mountain areas and of course my family. Although Finland is a beautiful place to be, Germany has much more to offer regarding entertainment and social activities. What do you like about Finnish People? Finnish people are quite helpful and open-minded. The Finnish people I have met so far are actually not that shy. What do you like now about Finland since you have been staying here for two month? I like the tranquility, pure nature and definitely the Finnish educational system. Studying here in Finland is more relaxing and fun compared to the German system. What should we be expecting from you this International Week? I am going to prepare some German food : Bretzel, German meatballs, herb butter and Obatzda with my friends. RECIPE
Pisang Goreng – the ultimate banana snack from the Southeast Asia region. We do have our own version in Vietnam but since this recipe is more wellknown and the two are quite similar anyways, let’s focus on Pisang Goreng for now. It is basically deep fried bananas, which means you can both enjoy the crispy batter on the outside and the sweet and soft taste of ripe bananas on the inside – a win-win! As unhealthy as it is, I recommend you do not eat this addictive snack every day, but every two days is completely okay, go ahead. Here are the ingredients and instructions:
Ingredients: •
bananas (I used 6 small ones) •
Instructions: 1. Slice the bananas into 4 slices, lengthwise and widthwise. Set aside. 2. In a large bowl, combine egg, milk, sugar and oil together. Once mixed well, gradually add flour and mix again. 3. Add vanilla extract and sesame seeds to the mixture. You can also add toasted coconuts and finely chopped peanuts according to your liking. 4. Once you got a smooth mixture, dip the banana slices into the mixture until fully coated. In the meantime, heat up a deep fryer or a heavy skillet on the stove with enough oil to cover half of the bananas. 5. Fry the banana slices until golden brown and crispy. Remove them from the oil and let them cool on a paper towel lined plate for a few minutes. 6. Serve them while they are still warm. Drizzle some coconut cream on top if you feel a bit fancy. Voila! An interesting twist on a versatile fruit that we all eat. But instead of putting it on a pizza like our beloved neighbor *coughs* Sweden *coughs*, us Asians turned it into a yummy snack. After 8 years of planning and 2 years of actual production, filled with different obstacles, such as replacing the director and the lead actor, Bogemian Rhapsody has finally reached the big screen all over the world. The movie revolves around Queen, undoubtedly one of the best rock bands to ever exist. Or at least, that’s what the writers and Bryan Singer, the director (who would step down later) wanted us to think. In fact, we got a Freddie Mercury-film, with the rest of the band, as well as the producers being the supporting cast. The love line in the movie could be better too. Freddie’s relationship with The Love of his Life, Mary, doesn’t really touch us in a way it should. Despite all this, on the other hand, we got a nice biopic. Rami Malek did his best to embrace his role as Freddie Mercury. He got prosthetic teeth, learned Freddie’s signature way of moving on the stage and speaking. The music in this movie… Well, it’s as amazing as Queen hits can be. All the best songs are in there. The culmination, a 20-minute long Live Aid performance in 1985, which some people consider to be the best rock performance in history of mankind, is charming. Bohemian Rhapsody will not become a huge film or a masterpiece. If you are a diehard Queen fan, it will not reveal anything shocking. However, it’s a strong, watchable and good movie. Epic moments will not disappoint you. Feel free to bring your friends and go see a movie about Freddie Mercury.

STUDENTS IN PRISON
Students specialising in Public Administration and Law spent a day in November to visit the Crime Museum and Helsinki Prison. The visit was arranged for the Criminal Law course. The Crime Museum has a collection of objects used as tools or evidence in famous crimes in Finland. The oldest object is an execution axe used in the 18th century. The Museum has photos of crime scenes and the visitors were warned at the beginning of the tour that some could faint but nobody did. The most repulsive photos have been taken away from the early days of the Museum. However, the writer visited the Museum in the 1990s when those photos were there and can still remember them as they were quite shocking to a young lawyer. The Museum is not open to the public but takes only visitor groups belonging to the police interest groups such as criminal law students. Visits must be agreed in advance. However, the Museum is nowadays open to the public one day a year but the lines are quite long then since the Museum draws public interest. Taking photos is prohibited in the Museum. Helsinki Prison is one of the oldest prisons in Finland (built in 1881). There are about 260 prisoners of whom 17 are doing a life sentence. At present, there are 27 non-Finnish prisoners. The number of prisoners with a non-Finnish background is higher though as some prisoners have acquired Finnish citizenship before having committed crimes that have put them in prison. Most non-Finnish prisoners originate from Estonia. In the history of the prison there have been prisoners originating from all the continents of the world except Antarctica. All prisoners are male as women are put to a prison in Hämeenlinna. Prisoners have the obligation and possibility to study, work and take part in addiction rehabilitation. Taking part in such an activity entitles a prisoner to receive a small activity pay of about 3 €/day. Did you know that all Finnish car registration plates are made by prisoners in Helsinki Prison? Prisoners can meet visitors on Sundays for one hour. By application, a prisoner can meet his family (spouse and children) in a special unsupervised family room for three hours every three weeks. Prisoners have made a KONNAKOKIN KOKKAUSKIRJA (= Crooked Chef’s Cookbook) which includes recipes created by prisoners of food materials that can be bought from the prison canteen which the prisoners can visit once a week.
