Editorial Hallo zusammen, and welcome to my first editorial! Well, also it might be the last one as my studies here already come to an end soon. For the ones who don´t know me yet, my name is Lena, I am from Germany and I had the pleasure to do an exchange semester here at XAMK. Who also has the feeling that the semester just flew by within one second? On the other hand, the time only flies so fast when you enjoy it a lot, so it is also a very good sign. But yes, I get super sentimental when I think about leaving XAMK, the Insider and Finland soon. April Fool’s day already passed, and I hope you enjoyed playing some pranks to your friends (especially when they were the ones we recommended you) or you got pranked nicely! Anyway, April is here and so does the spring – at least it feels like it! Who also starts their day lately with some more joy than usually because of all the spring vibes? Let´s see what the issue this week will bring along! First of all, Long gives us some more inspirations for summer vacations in south east Asia, this time he will cover places in Vietnam. It is definitely worth to read if you want to gather special insights and saver tips. Who also has the dream to continue their student life forever? Well sadly (or luckily) for most of us this is not reality and sooner or later we will have to work, work, work, work, work. Marija will give us some tips how to be prepared for life after XAMK and give an insight about what might come after the good old student life so don´t miss it. The profile is this week about a French exchange student called Maud. Sadly, this is the last week that our Lizzy was writing the profile because she wants to write more creative, but luckily our dear Anna will cover the profile from next weeks issue on! Let´s all thank Lizzy for her great job with the profiles and all the interesting students she introduced to us, thank you Lizzy! We are looking forward to reading more interesting things from you in the future. Muhammet visited the American Football Team practices in Kouvola and will introduce us to this interesting sport, in fact I didn´t even knew that they played here in Kouvola until I read his article! Where, when and what – read it and you will know more. A sentimental throwback to our childhood will bring the movie review this week. It is about the movie Dumbo which became a live-action remake. Very interesting and you maybe gain more insights about the message behind the story than you did as a child. Not only watching the movie but also to read this article will amaze you.

The second paradise that I recommend you for a summer trip is Hoi An, Vietnam. Unlike Kuala Lumpur with skyscrapers, shopping malls and fast-paced city life, Hoi An is a well-preserved town symbolizing Vietnam in its historical time. It possesses a unique architectural style that you cannot find anywhere else in Vietnam. Hoi An Ancient Town has become a UNESCO World Heritage since 1999. “To be like a local”, you should definitely try a tour by motorbikes or cars from Hoi An to Da Nang and Hue which are popular destinations attracting a huge number of tourists recently. The best time in the year for travelling is from May to August when the weather is calm and warm.

Hoi An Ancient Town is the first destination in your calendar. It is an area with a diversity of activities including culinary, religion such as temples, sight-seeing with architecture and stores that sell local handicrafts and Hoi An souvenir.

Cau Chua Pagoda also known as Japanese Covered Bridge is one of the most iconic attractions in Hoi An for its historical beauty. There are many assembly halls that are worth visiting such as Phuc Kien (Fujian), Trieu Chau (Chaozhou) and Quang Dong (Cantonese). Visitors can learn about the processes how to make a handicraft product from Hoi An Handicraft Workshop. And you can get home some pretty local products. An Bang beach is recommended if you want to lie down on the sand under the sun. It is not located inside Hoi An, but is 3km away to the East from the city centre. For adventurers, Cham Islands can be your next challenge. You can buy a day tour on Klook. com (28.55€) or if you are a backpacker and feel freer when travelling on your own, commercial motorboats are available. However, price negotiation is necessary.
E AT You cannot say that you are in Hoi An without trying Cao Lau (Cao Lầu) which is a traditional local noodle with soup, meat and vegetables but it has its unique flavor. A famous place to eat in is 26 Thai Phien street, Hoi An Province. Com ga Pho Hoi (Cơm gà Phố Hội) should not be missed in Hoi An. It can be found at Com ga Ba Buoi – 26 Phan Chau Trinh Street – from 11 AM to 19 PM.

Banh Dap Hen Xao (Bánh Đập Hến Xào) is a common Vietnamese-style snack that can easily be found everywhere in Hoi An. Banh Dap Hoi An restaurant is located at 679 Hai Ba Trung street which is close to Hoi An Ancient Town. Bao Xeo (Bánh Xèo - Vietnamese pancake) originates from the South of Vietnam. Life after XAMK Hi there guys, It has been a very long time since you have read an article written from me, but trust me that has a really good reason and it actually has to do with the topic of the article that you will read from me now. Maybe not all of you know, but I am supposed to graduate this May and as that might sound amazing, it is also very very very complicated. We all dream for the moment that we are done with university, we are done studying and we can finally move on, find a job and make our own money. At least this is what I dreamt about, but now I realise it is not as easy as it sounds. Actually, the easy part is when you are in the university because you know exactly what you have to do, when to do it and how. Meanwhile, after you graduate you are just a new unemployed person with a little experience or no experience at all. Anyway, life after XAMK has to be way better then the life I would have if I finished a university in my country or somewhere else because of the best educational system that they have. Anyway, my plan was to get a job whenever I could find around the world and of course I would have a plan B to apply for jobs in my country in case I would not be able to find anything else. I would say that this is the worst stage because I do not know where the wind will take and where will I end up after I graduate, but my whole life I have never been a plan person so my guess is that something will pop up and everything will be okay.

Maud Aumiphin How many countries have you visited? I have visited 15 countries. Just to mention a few, Australia, Iceland, Finland, Malte, etc. What do you like about Finland so far? I like the sloppiness of people from Finland, i don’t feel any pressure here my wears and lifestyle. I think the Finland people live more in contact with the nature than other the Europeans. What is your passion? My passion is training in fitness center. In addition, I have discovered a new passion: It is snowboarding. I really like it and I have already planned to visit Kouvola’s ski station next year to continue practicing snowboarding because this sport really makes me happy! What is your name and where are you from? My name is Maud Aumiphin and I am from Saint-Raphaël, a little city located in the South-Eastern part of France. What do you study? I study my Masters in Strategy Management at Université Lumière Lyon 2. Why did you come to Xamk for studies? I came to Finland because I would like to improve my English and live far away from my family to become mature. Also, I came here to discover Finland landscapes. In addition, I moved here to know how the finish people live because in my country when it’s snowing its apocalypse but here it’s normal and now, I am used to live in this kind of weather, this is very good because before I hated cold.
Where would you love to visit in the future after Finland? I really want to visit Venezuela, because I have never had the opportunity to discover Latin America. What would you like to become after studies? After my study, I am thinking about opening a startup company or to become a market researcher in France.
What do you miss about France? I miss my mum’s cuisine. I missed her “Tomate Farcies” it is called “stuffed tomatoes” in English. And, I miss the quality of the vegetables from France.

SHORT AFRICAN TALE FROM GHANA
How We Burnt Our Little Brother’s Butt Kuti is the last child of his parents M. and Mrs Asante. He has two big brothers and sisters; Koku, Yaw, Nana and Adwoa. Kuti is closest to Nana despite Adwoa was supposed to be the last child of the family. Adwoa was so happy to be the last child but at four, her mum was pregnant while their father was away working in South Africa. She became so unhappy about this but she had no option than to accept her little brother Kuti. But come to think of it, the bond between both siblings were so special and grew just like the rising on the sun. One day, Esi their mother was busy with domestic chores in the house. Adwoa had an idea to secretly cook in front of their mud house. She planned to cook a typical Ghanaian palm nut soup called “Abe”. She secretly brought out a coal pot outside the house. She has already reached the age of 9, very responsible and caring towards her siblings but while their mum was not watching, she likes to pretend to be the mum in the house. In the Ghanaian culture, the ‘Abe Kwan’ is typically eaten with ‘fufu’ a cassava starch. She went to fetch some coals from the brick kitchen at the back of the house pretending to cook dinner for her family. She poured some kerosene onto the charcoal she had gathered, then she lit a fire ready to place a clean pot to prepare ‘fufu’ (made up of cassava starch). Kuti was standing next to her, close to the fire. She immediately told him to get back into his room, but he refused. He wanted to help his sister with cooking. So, she gave up on him because he was adamant. At first, he was calm and watching his sister cook not until when he moved close to cooking pot. Adwoa: Would you get away from the fire place, Kuti!! Kuti: No, I will not. I want to help you. This is our father’s house not yours. It is ours. Adwoa: Left him alone and continues doing her thing. “Ok” you can stay but Don’t get close to my cooking pot. So, she decided to go into the house to bring other ingredients for cooking. By the time she returned she found Kuti inside the pot of “Abe”. She screamed and said “Fihokor” meaning leave there! What are you doing inside the pot you spoilt brat? Kuti butt was stucked in the pot and he was looking for ways to come out. He cried: please help me! I am stucked. His legs were inside the hot boiled soup she had prepared. He began to sweat so heavily and trying to move his legs out of hot soup. The soup covered him up to his waist. His mother heard his cry from the house, shouting ‘What has gone wrong again? As she came out of the house, she was shocked to see Kuti inside the hot pot. Adwoa began to tremble, her legs began to shake. She knew she was going to have the merciless beating of her life. Esi turned to Adwoa and said, “look at what you have done to your brother”. You want to kill him; you are in a big soup tonight Adwoa. Kuti said I love my sister, don’t beat her. She quickly replied him, shut up your mouth! If I hear you talk. (local Ghanaians speak pidgin English). She looked at his butt, smokes were coming out of it, he was looking helpless and in pains. She quickly carried him with his almost ‘burnt butt to the hospital. Adwoa cried so much and watched her brother as he laid flat on his stomach on the floor.
MORAL OF THE STORY Be obedient, even if you want to do things your own ways, seek advices and obey them so that you will not end in hot soup like Kuti.

I n d i a n s F o o t b a l l Te a m This week, once more, I was doing something different to tell you about. I visited the American football team practice in Kouvola. Yes, there is an American football team here. Even better, you, or anyone that you might think that would like to, can join there for sure. Let me introduce you an alternative sport and social activity. Indians Football Team. The team has practices twice a week. The practice is kept in Sami Hyypiä arena in Kuusankoski. Right now, practices are on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. But in summertime, they might change the day and the location because it is warmer. And the season is on summer as usual for Finland’s sports activities. Yes, there is a league to compete. But as I talked with the coach, Mika; the competition level is nothing to be concerned for. Because there is none. Everyone who attend to the practices are doing it for hobby. He told me that people need to do their work, school, family stuff and then if they have time, they will join to the practices. When I was watching the practice, they were 10 people attended. In total, there is 18 people in team so 8 was missing. And the coach would like at least 25 people in the team, but it would be better of course if there was 40. I asked the coach about how to become part of the team and the answer was clear. Just come. The detail work will be done easily but anyone can go and check for 1-2 practices and see if they like it or not. He is confident that people will like the training. And he offered me a con-
versation with the newest member of the team, Alexi. Alexi, as he told me that, has never done any sports before. And his friend got into the team and told him about it and invited him to join. He, obviously, saida; well, why not. And he is one of the big guys of the team and he has a task. Defending. And he practices that way with another guy that teaches him how to defend in American football. He says, it feels very good to be part of the team and take part in some sports. Now, let’s talk about how to attend there. The practices are kept in, as I said, Sami Hyypiä Arena. On Tuesdays, there is basic training. And on Wednesday, there is tactical training which I attended last week. They were very welcoming people and as I heard from them, they make many social activities with the team like going to sauna after the training and then go to party. If you want to do sports and have fun, Indians Football Team is for you. They have woman’s team and children’s team as well. The coach, Mika told me that everyone is welcome for the team. Big people, small people, woman, children, black or white. Before I forget, there is an American guy as well. And everyone I talked responded in English, so language is not a problem in the team either. Contact me next week and maybe we go check it out together. It is going to be fun.

It’s been quite a while since we had an animated movie for children (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is not really for the youngest ones so we don’t take it into consideration), with the last one being Ralph Breaks the Internet. This time, however, we have a cartoon about an elephant…. with huge…. ears!! Yes, you got that right. Mrs. Jumbo gave birth to Dumbo. Well, that is not the name a loving mother would give her son, and Mrs. Jumbo was as loving as they come. Elephants. Furious and bullying crowd called the little elephant Dumbo when they saw how immensely, mesmerizingly huge his ears were. Ears probably have something to do with intellect or the screenwriter’s imagination couldn’t come with anything better. Anyways, Dumbo’s name came to be the first night he came out on stage. However, being Dumbo doesn’t prevent the calf from… guess what, flying! This animal is able to use his ears as wings and rush to the skies just because he is not like others. The movie is supposed to be a shout-out about how poorly animals are being managed in circuses, only there are not too many circuses in the world right now. Even in the countries that still have those things with magicians, clowns and animals, the latter are taken good care, with Greenpeace and all. On the other hand, being kind towards animals in general – this idea is worth spreading and being put in kids’ heads. Animals are our friends and they really thrust us. The other idea, “you are obviously a freak so here you go, you can fly now, go show them that being different is cool” is weird, to say the least. Would the authors want their kids to grow up wanting to be outside of these “socially imposed values”? Probably not. Dumbo is a cartoon for the smallest kids. It’s kind, sometimes beautiful. The animation is really good. The ideas that the movie gives…. Not so much. Adults can very well ignore Dumbo; the reason is in the name.
