our ever-energetic person from Nigeria is writing the Editorial this week. Before proceeding, let us take a mini trip down to Africa with “Johnny”. Of course, We are heading to Lagos, Nigeria. Imagine you at the airport boarding to the “Giant of Africa, you are wearing your summer wears, short and sleeveless shirt for boys and light gowns for girls ready to take this amazing trip to a country you have never been before. You take your suitcase, sunglasses and your hat ready to explore.

After a long journey, you end up at Muritala Muhammed Airport, wanting to book a taxi down to a hotel at Lagos Island. And suddenly you feel really hot, its 34°C, you are already thirsty, sweating, and getting sun burns. You heard a taxi man saying “Oga, Madame where are you going to? I will take you there, welcome to Nigeria, my taxi no cost at all. Suddenly other taxi men are around you are saying “Welcome o! We have been waiting for you. “Waiting for me”? I don’ even know you. Why should you be waiting for me? You seem to be confused as you got surrounded by taxi men who are keen to get you to wherever you are going. You ended up choosing a taxi man named “Chinedu”.

He heads towards the main land as you begin to behold the beauty of Lagos in the car. Then the taxi driver said, “We don reach go slow”. You began to wonder what is “go slow”, are we stopping now or something? What is going slow? You simply ask the driver. He replied we “don reach traffic” As the car approached the traffic towards Surulere, you heard someone shout “Pure water re”! Bottle water re”! agbalumo* re! Meaning, “Buy your bottled water, pure water, your African star apple.

Come back to Finland or wherever you are reading this article. Story continues next time. New movie this week titled “Spider man- Into the spider verse”, don’t waste your money going to the cinema without seeing Nikita’s review. Muhammed was stranded at the airport for hours as his flight to “Lyon” in France was over booked. Read about how he survived this traveling challenge.

Lidiia is taking us to “Palau de la Música Catalana” Spain. That sounds very musical. I love Spanish language. Finally, as 1st of April is approaching, get new tips from Lena about pranking your friends.

All aboard!

FIRST STOP: SPAIN, BARCELONA I will tell you about Palau de la Música Catalana´.

B

uilt by architect Lewis Domenech-i-Montaner. It is the only hall in Europe with natural light. In 1997, the Palace of Catalan music was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Now, various performances are held in the palace: musical performances, concerts of symphonic and chamber music, jazz and Catalan songs. The palace was conceived with a double purpose: Catalan Orpheon (Orfeó Català) as a concert hall and as headquarters for the choral society of Catalan music. The building was built mainly with donations of citizens; the first stone was laid on 23th of April in 1905. The construction itself took less than three years and in February 1908 it was opened. The facade decoration organically includes elements of many styles, for example, elements of traditional Spanish and Arabic architecture.

On the main facade above the columns are large busts of Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina, Johann Sebastian Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven, and the bust of Richard Wagner is a little apart. The upper part of the facade is decorated with mosaics created by Lewis Brèu y Salelles. This large allegorical mosaic depicts members of the Orfeó Català choir. The ceiling is a dome consisting of colored glass mosaic. The walls, as well as the ceiling, consist mainly of stained glass from stained glass. In the hall you can see a lot of sculptures made by masters of the beginning of the XX-th century. Among them are sculptures depicting the flight of Valkyries from the opera

by Richard Wagner, a bust of Ludwig van Beethoven and sculptures of winged horses (pegasus). In the center of the stage is the flag of Catalonia. On the stage itself, there are 18 female sculptures depicting Greek muses.

Above the stage is an organ, the pipes of which symbolize male choral voices. The concert hall can accommodate 2200 people. In 1971, the Palace was declared a national monument of Spain. At one time, celebrities from all over the world shone here, including Sviatoslav Richter, Rostislav Rostropovich and Montserrat Caballe. I was delighted having been in such a unique place! I advise you to visit him and learn something new for yourself!

Eva Pacovská Why did you come to Xamk for study?

A couple of years ago, I visited a Concert of a Christian Finnish band in Prague. The band played symphonic metal, it created an interest in ma about the Finnish culture. Later on, I had to choose where I had to go for Erasmus, so Finland happened to be my clear choice.

Also, I choose here because I would like to discover more about myself, improve my English and Graphic Design Skills.

What do you miss about Czech Republic?

I miss my family, friends and a little bit I miss Czech food – Czech Dumplings, beer and lastly mountains.

What is your name and where are you from?

My name is Eva Pacovská and I am from Czech Republic. I live in west part of Czech near Karlovy Vary. My city Kraslice is located on a border with Germany. Karlovy Vary is known especially for Russians because there are nice spas there. If you will come to Karlovy Vary you can walk around spa colonnade and see the highest spring Vřídlo which is 12 meters high and temperature 73 °C. My University is Faculty Art and Design Jana Evangelisty Purkyně in Ústí nad Labem.

What do you study?

I am an exchange student for the whole year here. My field is Graphic Design. I choose graphic design because when I was a little girl, I was interested in creating new things.

What do you like about Finnish people?

They are quite shy, but they are always ready to help. I can confirm it. As an introvert, their character is quite close to mine. I found here really good Finnish friend. His name is Timo Rantamaki. Meeting with him changed my life. We had a few discussions about hockey, who is better Czech Republic or Finland.

What do you like now about Finland since you’ve been here for three months?

I visited Repovesi national park, it revealed to me how beautiful Finnish nature can be. Next thing is school – I got enrolled in courses which I have never tried before. For example, Board game design, Package design, Illustration. I have met a lot of friends in my Erasmus circle and between a lot of wonderful Finnish people as well. And the last is, travelling to Helsinki, St. Petersburg and Tallinn.

I

t´s the morning of the first April. As every year this day comes a little unexpected and you didn´t planned anything fancy to fool around with your friends, roommates or your partner. So the standard jokes like “I am pregnant” or the “I put some Salt in the Sugar dispenser” will come along as every year. But not this year! With this little guide you will surprise your roommates and have a lot of fun too.

The first joke I want to introduce you to is the confetti bomb. First of all, you have to invite your friend to your house, or you have to know at what time your partner/ roommate is coming home. Then you have to prepare yourself with some confetti in your hands, therefore you don´t necessarily need to buy some confetti, you can also use a hole puncher and some old paper and make it by yourself.

Then, prepared with the confetti in your hand, when your roommate/partner etc. opens the door you can throw the confetti in the air and shout “confetti bomb”. Seriously, who is not loving some confetti. Even if you have a really bad day it will cheer you up instantly.

The second joke will bring a lot of joy to your roommate/ partner. Why not turn the bad joke into something nice afterwards? And for sure your joke will be forgiven directly. All you have to do is get up a little earlier and prepare a breakfast. Then, you have to wakeup your victim of the joke and tell him that he overslept a lot and its noon already. Then he will jump out of bed and find the perfect breakfast. He might be angry first, but after some pancakes he will be super happy and forgive you. I hope you will spend some funny times with your loved ones!

The International Week

L

ast week, we were at Lyon for The International Week event. I must say it was an extraordinary experience. My friend Tino, who wants to go for an exchange there, made sure as hell that it is worth to go there. But let’s go to study aspects in the end of the article.

As you might have known before, this trip was free of charge except the flight costs. Special case for us, we earned money for going to this trip because our flight was overbooked, and airlines company had to pay us more then what we paid to them. So, the trip started with amazing news even before we got there which made us more hectic about it. Jealous yet?

The city of Lyon is 3rd biggest city of France with the population of 1.7 million people located in south-east of France. Enough boring information. It is, probably like whole France, full of arts and museums and architecture. We visited few museums of course with the international week group but there was more to visit for sure. We also had something like our amazing race, but it was not a race for bars but for historical locations in the city. Me and Tino won the race. As expected. I do not want to go to details of the experience but If you ever have a chance to visit Lyon, take it.

Let’s go to details of The International Week.

It is a project for graduation. I was held in IUT (Instituts Universitaires de Technologie). In their system, they must either work for 1 year to end their studies and write a thesis about it or they perform an event that takes 1 year to prepare for. The group that choose to do The International Week this year was very nice people.

Basically, group of students came together to make it possible and they made a good job.

Very tight schedule for us and for them as well.

There were students from 4 different countries.

Netherlands, Ireland, England and of course XAMK represented by me, Tino and Dori. They made classes for us in the mornings. Mostly about European Union and few classes like our intercultural competence class with Sara and Slaveya. Personally me, loved the classes but

I cannot say the same for every student. Afternoon was for touristic events that they planned for us. First day was for Treasure Hunt in the city, then we visited the museum of miniatures, museum stadium of Lyon and in the last day, museum of ‘Confluences’. After each day we had fun events like bowling or pub night. They left Friday for us to do whatever we want and leave. I must say that me and Tino planned to go watch a football game in the stadium of Olympique Lyonnais on Saturday but thanks to yellow vest people, the game was cancelled.

So, we had Friday and Saturday to see the city there which we were so sad the whole time because we could not watch the game. Next year, if you have a chance to take part in this event, take it! It was worth it. But this might feel worth to us because we got paid for it but still.

It was very nice experience.

I want to talk about a little bit about French people. The stereotype for me was that they did not like to speak in English. Big lie. In the Treasure hunt event in the city, we had questions to answer and a map to find where we are going. Me and Tino rejected to use the map and asked people for the location and also, we asked them the questions like who made this and why. People were very excited to answer our questions. That was the reason they choose us as winners. And meanwhile, every time we told people we are tourists and have questions they showed us flawless hospitality.

The other stereotypes were mostly right. They love the wine. They love the cheese. My hosts, very nice people, offered me wine and cheese in the first evening and few times more. And they were also happy to speak English with me.

Small warning, city is a bit expensive but if you can fund it, a touristic experience to remember for sure. I will not try to go there for the event next year but that is because I do not want to take the opportunity from someone else. Maybe I will visit again in future if I can make it possible. There was a lot more to see.

The 80’s are Back!

Here I go again on my own, goin’ down the only road I’ve ever known.

“In my childhood it used to be better” – that is how our parents

usually begin telling stories about their past. Sometimes descriptions of the past sound so extra but wonderful, that it really makes us think maybe 80s were one of the best times to ever be alive. Since, it is not possible to sit in a time machine and go back to relive those days, so Kupla, the school organisation responsible for the cool parties, are giving everyone a unique opportunity to go back in time just for one night to the decade of board games, the best screen version of Stephen King’s “Shining” and Diet Coke, on 27th of March. It’ll be a night when all students can feel the real spirit of the 80s.

Even though everyone is super excited about the upcoming party, but they do not have a single clue about what to wear. Here are some outfit ideas for the best party ever! If you are into sport choose world famous ‘Lacoste’ polos, spandex leggings and ‘Reebok’ classics. All Michael Jackson fans should give preference to leather jackets, preferably red, and studded gloves. Girls might try to make huge perms, neon mini-skirts and animal print. Do not forget about acid-washed jeans and huge accessories.

Grab your boombox and it is time for party hardy!

Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse

S

pider-Man is arguably the most famous superhero of all time.

Without a doubt, he is a part of the “big trinity”, along with Superman and Batman. See? The only Marvel Comics representative in the top; no wonder he has been a cash cow for the past fifty years or so. Sony has been taking full advantage of the movies with the trilogy that we know as “original” one with Toby McGuire as the lead actor. Then came The Amazing Spider Man with Andrew Garfield and man, was that a letdown for all the fans… After that, Sony got a deal with Marvel and rented the character to them for a few movies, and we got to enjoy Tom Holland, who thrusted himself into the costume for another six movies (that’s the agreement between Sony, who possesses the rights to the character and Marvel Studios).

Meanwhile, Sony continues to milk the cow and expand its universe. Venom is already released, Morbius with Jared Leto is on its way. “Why only movies”, thought Sony and created an animated film.

Well, this film is incredible.

It has already won the Oscar for the animation, and it is really truly amazing. Watching this cartoon is like reading a comic book on a big screen. The characters are drawn so good and the comic-style words and thoughts appear so naturally, it’s beyond imagination. It is not at all disturbing, not annoying, it’s just new and beautiful.

If you go to the movie theater to see Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, be sure that you’ll see plenty of amazing characters (Insider’s favorite is Noir Spider-Man, voiced by Nicolas Cage), very funny jokes, unexpected plot twists and such a great animation, it will blow your mind. Hands down, the best Marvel-related animated movie so far.
