EDITORIAL

We are back with another week!! How was your Easter holiday¬? Hope you have enjoyed, it was great mini break to relax before preparing for the semester exam.

In this week’s issues, we have interesting articles.

We have profile article from an exchange student and a participant of start-up-passion. Also, if you are craving for a delicious simple and easy to bake cake recipe then check out the recipe. I can’t wait to try it myself, since it’s my favour cake!

In addition, to this week, we have three reviews, we have a movie review that’s perfect to watch it with friends, a book recommendation and anime review that will thrill you. So, don’t forget to check them out. and lastly but not least, there is an amazing articles from Mikkeli and Fazer factory experience so do check them out and the rest of the articles of this week’s issues.

PORVOO – A DASH OF THE OLD DAYS

Busy getting around with assignments and preparation for the finals? No time for a full vacation? I am suggesting you take a one-day-trip to Porvoo to shake off and wind up just for a while!

The Swedish-speaking population of the place is quite much about 30% as a result of its history used to be colonized by Swedes in 13th and 14th centuries. Porvoo is one of the Finland’s six medieval towns, giving it a touch of historical and charming feeling once setting foot onto its famous Old Town. The little town is filled with very signature medieval street pattern and the distinctive red colored wooden houses along the Porvoo River. How tranquil and serene it is to be emerge in such surroundings. Dear my international friends, it will be a sin if you do not even once visit this lovely city during your stay in Finland! Here are some random pictures of some random places I have visited in Porvoo, just a very few but I hope enough to evoke some interest in you.

Don’t forget to hit some antique shop in Porvoo, may you not buy something, but sure will understand a little bit more about the place’s history as well as culture throughout generations.

It is not difficult to find some pop-up flea market in Porvoo’s old town.

Cobblestone path and a sunny day, any better combination for a day out?

Have you been walking quite a long time?Stop by this chocolate room (PetriS Chocolate Room – Jokikatu 16) and taste its homemade chocolate please, I guarantee that otherwise you will regret.

At the end of the trip let’s buy some souvenirs and postcards!

Finally, I want to suggest you visit one of the most famous destination that you must visit while in Porvoo: Porvoo Doll and Toy museum. In here you can find thousands of dolls and other toys on display. I am pretty sure this will be a highlight for your trip, unfortunately I cannot show you any picture as last time I was here the museum was not in the opening time. But one thing for sure, I will visit Porvoo again some day to visit this last place in my Porvoo checklist. Anyone want to join in?

FAZER EXPERIENCE

Hello everyone, how was your Easter holiday?

I celebrated it with my friends in Helsinki. Huray! This time we decided to make a tour to Fazer factory.

I bet you at least once heard or saw this brand when going to supermarket or walking on a street.

First, let’s me show you how to get there. It is quite easy with the convenience of public transportation in the capital of Finland. Fazer calling that place is Fazer Visitor Centre and it is located in Fazerintie, Vantaa. Therefore, it is quite far away from the center of Helsinki. It did take us approximately 40 minutes to get there by bus. From Rautatieasema (Railway station), we went to Rautatientori next to railway station. Then we took the bus number 717. We left when the bus hit the station called ‘Kirkkokuja’. Now, you will have two selections. You can either walk for a short distance or take the bus 587 to get there.

If you intend to go sight-seeing around Helsinki-Vantaa-Espoo region, I think it is more economical to buy a region day ticket for €14 rather than a 80-100-minutes €5 ticket.

Secondly, it is free to enter this amazing place. There is a store with full of normal and exclusive Fazer products to please their fans. You can even find some souvenirs to grab home such as key tag, T-shirts or notebooks. I did buy a lot – a luggage of chocolate and assorted sweets for my family and friends . On the other side of the centre is Fazer Café. You can enjoy Fazer signature beverages. A recommendation from me is Fazer brew with sugar, milk and a piece of chocolate. If you reach there during lunch time, you will feel satisfied with the delicious, nutritious and diverse menu.

The most exciting part here is Fazer Exhibition. You can enter only with a tour guide. Therefore, you need book ticket in advance through visitfazer.com to secure your place. The price for student is 14.50€ including taxes and ticketmaster’s fee. They also provide a tour for school for free. However, you need to contact them for more information. After 1-hour guided tour, you will understand Fazer’s culture, long history, inspirations for new flavours and have a chance to taste unique products. Sadly, I could not make it to get inside because all the tickets were sold out. You can share with me and Insider’s readers through hashtag: #Insider_XAMK_FazerEx What should you grab home with you? Everything is cheaper than in supermarkets so it is a plus. I would refer Fazer mint with the tin box and Finlandia marmalade as a gift. A box of 147 pieces of Moomin lollipop is so tempting if you are a Moomin fan just like me.

For this issue, I interviewed an exchange student from France, Alexandre Bruneau. He was one of the members of startup passion from kouvola campus.

What is your home university?

I am currently studying in XAMK University of Applied Sciences as an exchange student from France in the first year of Master degree of International Business. I have graduated last year from the ISTC (Institute of Strategies and Technics of Communication) based in Lille, France.

BOOK REVIEW “Anyone who question me-I made them feel crazy for doing it.” ― Alexandra Bracken, The Darkest Minds

The Dark Minds is a sequel of the three novels

by Alexander Bracken. The novel was published at the end of 2012.The genre is fiction, thriller, dystopia and science fiction.

A deadly disease has infected quite large number of children's and these kids that do survive from the disease end up developing some special powers, and later they are put into a brutal governmental concentration camp, where the government put them to work, in a disastrous condition and they live in fear. The kids are labelled based on age or how threatening they are and with that they are divided into groups.

The story is based on supernatural powerful kids but mainly a young girl named ruby. Ruby was one the survives from the deadly disease and she is send to the concentration camp, Thurmond by her parents because of them not knowing how to keep her safe or cure her.

However, when ruby was around 16 she escaped from Thurmond camp. Throughout her escaping she meets a group of kids and together they try to get hand of their powers. Also, the people that are after them due to their supernatural power.

One thing I liked about the dark minds novel is the writing style and its simple to read.

RECIPE

My timing is not the best, since this recipe should have been published just in time for Easter so that you guys can try it out yourselves. Nevertheless, this is a treat that I had been meaning to do for quite some times but never actually got around to do it since carrot is my least favorite vegetable, thus the chance of me having a bunch of them on hands is extremely rare. However, despite the fact that it tastes weird alone, combining it with numerous other things results in a surprisingly delicious cake. Let’s start.

Instructions: 1.

Preheat the oven to 175 degrees.

2.

Whisk flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon and ground ginger together in a bowl for ~15 seconds till well combined.

3.

In another bowl, whisk in the sugar and eggs. Slowly pour the melted butter in while still whisking. Switch to a spatula and stir in the grated carrots and almonds.

4.

Combine the wet ingredients with the dry ingredients. Carefully transfer the batter into a lightly lubricated baking dish. Bake for ~35 minutes. Let the cake cool completely while we move on to the frosting.

5.

Using an electric mixer, combine all the ingredients together except the powdered sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the sugar a little bit at a time to avoid making a mess. Check for desired sweetness. Spread the frosting onto the cooled cake and leave it in the fridge for at least 3 hours.

6.

Serve with your favorite drinks and enjoy.

The cake should be quite dense, but still moist. This is a perfect treat for whenever you crave something sweet and simple to make. Although the waiting time is figuratively painful, it is certainly worth it!

Since I am kind of obsessed with anime this issue I would like to write an article about one of my favorite anime, I actually saw this particular anime when I was about 13 and I loved it instantly, since I was feeling nostalgic I decided to re-watch it and why not then write an article about it.

So Another is basically a Japanese horror/mystery novel first published in 2009 by Yukito Ayatsuji, but then later on between 2010 and 2012 it was turned into a 5 volume manga. That same year, 2012, the television series aired, releasing 12 episodes for Another. I don’t want to get into a lot of details about the plot of this amazing article, but I will tell you my honest opinion about it and also some key points of the series.

The series takes place in a middle school, it’s the year 1998 but it also shifts back to 26 years ago, the year 1972, in the same middle school. A really loved female student of the middle school 26 years ago suddenly dies, but her classmates continue to behave like she’s still alive, until graduation

when in a picture of the whole class her faded face shows up. In 1998 the same kind of situations seem to be happening to the students of the same class, where they’re all soon caught up in a strange phenomenon, in which students and their relatives begin to die in often gruesome ways. As the series comes to an end two of the students of this class start to realize that the phenomenon of 26 years ago is connected to what’s happening in the class of 1998.

As I mentioned before, I personally really love this particular anime, I think it has a pretty clever plot that ends with a brilliant resolution and at the same time the colors are great and the soundtracks as well. I would say though that it’s not particularly the definition of horror to me, but depending on different people’s point of view it could be seen differently. Either way I would strongly recommend this anime to everyone, even to the people that don’t particularly like watching anime.
