EDITORIAL
Hello everyone and welcome to the first ever editorial brought to you by me. This week is special. Friday is a holiday so you will have an amazing opportunity to read this issue on Thursday, one day earlier than usual! Let’s have a recap of what you are about to read, all right? Are there any anime fans here? Maybe those who like Japan, its culture, and history? Hooray for you guys, because Stela has an article about Studio Ghilbi which created the titles such as Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totoro! Hurry up and read it! As usual, I’ll have a movie review again. After last week’s disastrous Red Sparrow, a failure of a movie, it’s time we watched something good. Can a film called Ready Player One and directed by Steven Spielberg qualify as good or it is another trash? You will find out after you read the review. There are two eternal truths in our life: Lannisters always pay their debts and students are always hungry, so Lingli will teach you how to eat chinchillas and Le Trang will talk about taming and keeping tofu as your home pet. Wait, what?? Other than that, Trung aka Winston dwells on film photography and different cameras. Ever wondered which device to buy as a gift to a photography lover? Go check it out. Finally, Hafsa is back with a new book review. This time, she shares her thoughts on The Passenger, a time-traveling novel. I wonder, how she can read so much?... HOW TO STUDY INDEPENDENTLY
Summer is coming soon (well, you might do not really believe me, but soon or later it will be outside!), so let’s start preparation for summer studies.
feel like you have not finished the previous one. Just from time to time come back to that chapter and revise the material. Because you are moving to the harder material, the easy information will settle down in your memory by itself, and, what is more interesting, you will get broader view on that topic you felt uncomfortable about!
Earther you will choose studying from summersemester.fi or from Coursera, Khan academy, MIT open courses (you see how many variants there are?) or just an library book, today I am going to reveal useful tricks to actually accomplish your commitments for studying.
• In some cases, if you pay for your education, you feel more motivated. So, if the situation allows, pay for exam/course, and hit your procrastination.
• Focus on one main resource of your knowledge. And have a commitment to finish it till the end. So, in case with summer semester just tell yourself that you will accomplish all chapters/assignments that are available there. It will help your brain to have a pleasant feeling of actual process, which you will never get if you study something from one website and something from a book. Of course, you can use other sources of information, but your will power needs to be focused on active absorbing the knowledge from one resource. • Stop being a perfectionist! Move on to the next topic according to your study plan even if you 4
• Find a person who will supervise you. It can be a teacher with whom you agree to have some quick Q&A sessions, so that you cannot just stay unprepared. Another variant to have check and balance sessions with people who have the same goal. • Plan! Better small steps every day than 5 chapters before the end. Also plan what kind of topics you will cover during your study time. Everything is possible to be learnt by yourself. At least trying to do so, you already one step closer towards your goals. SOMETHING ABOUT CHINCHILLAS
I have a chinchilla named Maiz back in China, he is the baby of my whole family. The first time I heard this kind of animal is from one of the Miyazaki Hayao’s most famous movies- My Neighbor Totoro. The cute Totoro inside is chinchilla in real life. Every chinchilla has their own ‘chinchinality’. For example, I heard some of them are so gentle, they are sweet and they can even sleep in your arms. If you train them well, they can do ‘turn-around’. But Maiz is totally opposite. He is smart, curious like all the chinchillas but he gets unhappy if I don’t let him out to have fun or simply because he doesn’t get his snacks from me. Chinchillas love snacks, they are born foodies. And you know what he acts like when he gets angry? When I touch him or call his name, he turns his face aside, playing numb and dumb. That’s Maiz’s ‘chinchinality’. So don’t get pissed off when your chinchillas don’t listen to you and being naughty, although I’ve already got used to it. I also want to share some tips about keeping a chinchilla. 1. Don’t give them too many snacks, tiny amount for once a week would be enough. Excessive snacks are bad for their health, they can cause obesity. Your dotage maybe harmful to chinchillas. 2. Don’t let them out of the cage when they’re small, otherwise these curious little babies will definitely go wild after exploring the outside world and become unwillingly to go back home. Oh, they’re not easy to get caught by the way, they are good at hiding in somewhere you can’t get, for example, under the sofa. That’s how Maiz playing tricks, slipping away when I open the cage door to put his food in. 3. Be patient on your chinchillas, like a said, they are born to be curious, if they do something naughty, don’t get angry, most importantly, don’t hurt them no matter what they do. Chinchillas have feelings. Once you decide to pet animals please love them, because you’re their whole life. Lingli Jing 5
STUDIO GHILBI
Studio Ghibli is one of the most acclaimed animation studios in the world, and the home
of some of the most revered and beloved animated works to have ever graced the screen. It is based in Koganei, Tokyo, Japan. Studio Ghilbi is best known by the whole world for its anime films and also television commercials and television films. The birth date of the studio is on the 15th day of June of the year 1985. Their first work was Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. What came next were some of the best anime movies ever created, most of them standing among the 15 highest grossing anime films ever made in Japan. Some of Studio Ghilbi’s best works and also some of my own favorite anime films were: Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, Grave of the Fireflies, Whisper of the heart, Kiki’s delivery service, When Marnie Was Here and The Cat Returns. What’s special about each of the films is the different storyline the studio presents, each presented with an unpredictable ending and a hidden meaning to each of them. Studio Ghilbi has also made possible a museum dedicated to their work. This museum is basically a place where fans can see memorable meals eaten in the anime films, Pazu and Sheeta sharing a fried egg on toast in Castle in the Sky, Chihiro shedding tears of relief eating a rice ball received from Haku in Spirited Away, Howl frying up bacon and eggs for Sophie, Markl and everyone in Howl's Moving Castle and so on. The meals that you see in Studio Gilbi films are not your ordinary meal, but each of the meals have their own meaning, which gives a more special meaning to the films and make fans feel more excited because they get to connect with each of the characters. But how do they create such delicious-looking meals and make the right gestures and expressions for the characters enjoying it? Well obviously that comes from the power of finely detailed drawing. I’m a very dedicated fan of Studio Ghilbi works and it would be my dream to be present in their museum, well hopefully one day maybe I will. Stela Demaj

SUMMER INTERNSHIP TIPS
School is about to end soon, summer vacation is approaching, and so as the internship hunting season. There is no better way to develop yourself professionally, or spend your summer in the most productive way, than to have a great internship. So are you struggling with finding your internship? Take a look at some of my tips here! Just my humble opinions and personal experiences that may help you to get that dream internship!
Self-preparation Generally, I think this step is even much more important than job hunting itself. Pack yourself with relevant skills, knowledge, and experience to expand your possibilities; rather than search for jobs days and nights but filter out most options because you can’t meet the requirements. The process will be much easier if you have the right tools. If this will be your first internship, or you don’t have any real-life working experiences in the field, this step is extremely crucial. You need other ways to show the recruiters your skills, to make up for your lack of experience. For example, take extra courses online to enhance your knowledge on a specific field, do voluntary work, participate in school projects, or seriously anything
that may show what you are capable of. Don’t just talk, have something to show them. Tip 1: Widely accepted and easy-to-get online certificates like Google Analytics Certificate, Microsoft Office Specialist, … are good small accessories for your CV. “An excellent CV takes 350493 fixes to be excellent” – quote by me. Sorry for my awkward humor but seriously, your CV should take plenty of fixes to look “just fine”. Don’t settle down and be happy with your CV, change it as much as you need to improve it. Remember to check for grammatical mistakes too (that’s the worst). Tip 2: Keep 2 changeable versions of your CV. One with your full information, experiences, activities, … to act as a frame. The other is to can change, add, or leave out anything irrelevant, to best suit the requirements of the specific job you are applying to. It is also important to know what position you need for your future career, and what will actually suit you. There is a big difference between what you WANT to do and what you CAN do. So dream high, but at the same time … be practical.
Job hunting I mostly got mine by random luck, so no specific advices here. But you should be prepared, be fast, and be really active in your job search. Because literally there are thousands of students out there looking for the same position. But it doesn’t mean you have to rush, and don’t give up if you haven’t found one. I bet every student was in the no-internship-found depression phase before they got their luck! Tip 3: Some useful platforms to find your internships: LinkedIn (really invest your time in your LinkedIn profile), Erasmusintern.org, Indeed jobs, Student site, … Or just go directly to your favorite company’s website to find if there are any positions available. So yeah, that’s basically what I learnt from my internship hunting process. Just take as many opportunities to try as you can. Failure is not as bad as knowing you missed such a good chance. INSTANT FILM
Film photography is kinda fun, you can do all sorts of tricks and unique styles with it. Yet, waiting for the film rolls to be processed and printed in the dark room can be a bit daunting, not to mention the dough you have to spend on it. I am lazy and not yet have that much dough so I bought an Instax for instant film instead. Though the films are expensive, the fun in shooting instant film is worth the price. I did not know whether I should buy an instant camera any way because although the camera is cheaper, the films cost a fortune. Yet, with the inability to edit, every mistake I make is gonna be so painful to my wallet. Then I thought, yeah, well, fun is in the journey so...food money is worth the trade ei? The thought of fiddling with the film pack after messing up with it is so tempting I buy an Instax badly. I eventually bought one anyway, though up until now, I can still not have enough if it. Light leaks, multiple exposures, bulb shooting… man, so much to explore. I had my eyes set on Instax Mini 90 Neo Classic and a Lomo’Instant not only for the outlooks but also for versatility of them. I’ve been using Fuji cameras for quite a while now and the Neo Classic kinda fits the look with my mirrorless Fujifilm so I bought it instead of the Lomo’Instant. The Neo Classic also has a bunch of modes that is so awesome when it comes to instant film. There’s so many things I wanna experiment and since my wallet is screaming, probably I'll play deaf. Oh yeah, I'm kinda dense with giving present so instead of squishing my brains out for birthday gifts ideas or something similar so I just give them a couple of instant films and it’s all good. People just don’t wanna spend money on films, yet at the same time wanna keep some as a memory gift so yeah, instant films’ great...for me at least. Trung Dao

BOOK REVIEW “You do have a choice, you know,” Etta told her after a moment. “There is always a choice.” - Alexandra Bracken, Passenger
An adventure and a time traveling novel by Alexandra Bracken, The passenger. It was published in 2016 and genre of this novel is fiction, fantasy and adventure fiction. The time travelling of this novel is a world where there is a set passages to a different time periods and places and not only are they travelling back in time, they are also traveling into a different locations and only particular people are able to use those passages like the time travellers. So, the novel passenger talks about girl named Etta spencer who is violinist, prodigy’s and she is living with her mother in New York. One of her night concert, she was kidnaped into a world, full of time travellers and she figures out that she has the ability of time travelling. Later she finds out that her mother had the same ability and that she is also a time traveller and that her mother has a bad blood ties with this other family that is full of time travellers. Fast forward, Etta was recruited by the head of time travellers to complete a task that they believe her mother was involved in and in order for her to go back to her normal life she must complete the task. While all of this is going on she meets other time travellers like Nicolas and other characters who are trying to find the same object before Etta and others who want to harm her. I have enjoyed reading the passenger and I liked the way the author narrated the story but the base of the first few chapters was a bit slow for me. Hafsa Farah

RECIPE
Sweet tofu pudding – a popular Vietnamese dessert that you can find at any local market across the country. Although the name might vary from region to region, it is commonly known as a light and sweet treat which is made from soybeans with a fluffy texture similar to flan cake. The traditional recipe calls for various kinds of ingredients and tools which are quite tricky to find in Finland, so the recipe I am bringing you all today is a simplified version with an almost identical taste. Instructions: 1. In a pot, mix in the soymilk and white sugar. Bring it to a boil till the sugar dissolves. Turn off the heat and let it cool for 10 minutes. 2. Stir the gelatin into the water. Let it set for 5 minutes or until small bubbles form on top. Place the gelatin mixture into a bigger bowl with hot water and stir again. It is not recommended to mix the gelatin directly in the hot water as it could result in a gooey, chewy texture. 3. Pour the gelatin mixture into the chilled soymilk and mix well. Get a large bowl and pour the mixture in. Place in the fridge for at least 7 hours (preferably overnight). 4. Mix the brown sugar and water in a pot on medium-low heat. Mix well till the sugar has completely dissolved. Add the crushed ginger and continue boil for a few minutes until aromatic. 5. Using a spoon, gently skim around the bowl with the tofu mixture and place each spoonful in a smaller bowl until filled up half the bowl. Pour the sugar syrup in and enjoy. This recipe is not exactly fool-proof, as it requires several intricate skills. However, I did it, and I am the clumsiest person in the world, so I am certain you guys can definitely do it too. Ready Player One or Spielberg’s in the house, baby!
Steven Spielberg... This guy is like Pelé, Michael Jordan, and Madonna. Even if you are not familiar with soccer, basketball or pop music, you still know these names. Some might call them legends (probably not Madonna but it’s a different topic) and it would be a correct usage of the word. Steven Spielberg is the same story; whether you’re familiar with Hollywood or not, you absolutely know this guy. Schindler’s List, Save Private Ryan, Jurassic Park, Jaws, The Terminal and many, many more masterpieces were directed by this genius! Steven has been delivering high-quality movies in different genres since the third quarter of the last century. Now he brings us Ready Player One, a futuristic sci-fi movie and it’s a good one! In 2045, virtual reality becomes more real than non-virtual for nearly every human on the planet. OASIS is the place for everyone to live and everything is sound and good until the creator of OASIS, James Halliday, dies. In his last will, he says that he hid an Easter Egg somewhere and the one who finds it will claim his fortune. James was genius, billionaire, and while playboy and philanthropist are not exactly about him, he really did have a lot of money. And now, since the entire world knows it, the hunt for the Egg will be huge! It’s been a very long time since we saw a great dystopia movie (sorry, Hunger Games fans) and it was Equilibrium in 2002. Ready Player One might not be perfect but it’s relatively good. As Americans say, bad acting is bad directing, and actors here are very good. This movie is beautiful, as any sci-fi movie should be, and sometimes breathtaking. No matter how hard you try to find something bad about this movie, only one thing comes up – its rating is PG-13. Imagine, how much more violence and amazing scenes would be there if it were R-rated! Well, unless an R-rated movie is Deadpool or Logan, it’s not gonna collect a lot of money at the box office. All in all, Ready Player One is a very, very good movie by a legendary director.
