START-UP PASSION
So, as you all know the Start Up Passion Hackathon this year took place in Tartu, Estonia. It was a trip organized by the wonderful StartUp team for 3 days, that actually felt like a whole week or even more. A lot of students from Xamk’s Kouvolan, Mikkeli and Kotka campuses were participants of the Hackathone. There was a 2 hour trip from Kouvola to Helsinki Airport with students from Kouvola and Kotka campuses that then met up with the wonderful students of Mikkeli. After all of us arrived in Tartu’s airport there was a problem with most of the student’s luggage.Apparently, the luggage were not delivered to Tartu, everyone started freaking out and the only comfort they had was making fun of the emergency kit the airport staff provided for them. I can say I was so damn lucky not to have the same problem because I would have freaked out pretty badly haha. 4
When we got to the hotel the first thing happening was Sabine giving us our room keys and telling us with whom we were roommates. My roommates happen to be my very beautiful best friends, when we got the room keys we were literally jumping upside down from the joy. After all of us settled in we had our first StartUp meeting with everyone, including the students and the staff. We started off by playing some kind of games, being divided in different teams based on the color of each of the student’s shirts or even based on how many siblings each of us had. The first day was a pretty tiring day but on my opinion it was also really fun, and after we went back to the hotel we had the chance to gather with all of our friends and have fun together, although most of us were really tired because of the trip. What became a good kind of routine was waking up in the morning, eating breakfast until 9.45 and going to Spark (the place where the Start Up Passion meeting were held) and being there for at least 7-8 hours or so. I can say with full disclosure that I enjoyed every hour of the days, some day we had to come up with different ideas and then pitch the most important ones, others days we would work on our innovation in groups of 4/5, and on the final day pitch our final idea. One of the things that I enjoyed the most, and I'm sure not only me but everyone, was the teambuilding at the trampoline center and of course the pizza. I felt like I was 5 once again and I had all of my friends around me to play, it felt great. Of course, I was also fascinated by the guests who came to give speeches in front of us and well I learned a lot from them, and I'm sure everyone else did too. If I had to choose what I liked the most about the trip it would be, dealing with a real life experience, meeting talented and experienced people, having fun with my friends and of course making some new ones. Now I’m really excited for Latvia, and can’t wait for the day to come, I’m full of positive energy and ready to make my groups idea come true. Stela Demaj

LEARNING STRATEGIES
Do you spend days and nights in the university while we could be somewhere else? Are you here to learn something new? Why not to learn the best strategies for better learning? I challenge you to take this time more conscious and make a use out of all years spent with teacher’s slides and morning lectures. This time I give you a review on the most efficient ways to memorize information and study more efficient. All data is a digest from «Learning how to learn» course by Coursera and researches available on their website. Practice makes permanent! The Most Effective Learning Strategies • Practice self-testing: either you need to learn words or pieces of information – question yourself! Start discussing the topic with yourself, try to expand your answer using the previous experience. • Distributed practice: implement a schedule for revising the needed information for couple of times per week/month. But don’t just read it! Revise! Strategies with Much Promise • If you don’t have too much time: mix

three subjects over the time. Study first one for an hour, then move to another one, focus on it and go check the last one. Take a breath and go for another round! • Self-explanation: explain how new information is related to known one or explain step by step what was going on. • Teach others: you will feel responsibility to learn better as well as learning will be enhanced by a stressful situation. Less Useful Strategies (That Students Use a Lot) • Rereading, highlighting: it is fine only at the beginning of the process. • Keyword, images and associations: create physical or mental mind map of the topic you studied. Other helpful tips: • Take a nap. Or go to sleep and dream about what you have just learnt. It will be useful not only for learning itself but also for your creativity. • Don’t forget to take a rest from time to time. Relax by running. Turn on your muscles after hard brain work. • If you are lost in the text: ask «Why?». Again, more you question yourself, more answers you will find, and more connections you will build.
Students will retain knowledge for a longer period of time when they distribute their practice than when they mass it. Students who solve new problems that involve transferring what was learned during practice perform better when they use self-explanation techniques. Rereading has inconsistent effects on student learning, and benefits may not be long-lasting. And remember: even the best strategies will only be effective if students are motivated to use them correctly. Do you want to read more? PROFILE
For this issue, I interviewed Zenan Zhu, she is a double-degree student from Jinhua Polytechnics, China. It will be her last few months staying here. What do u think of the double-degree programm ? It’s an effective way to enrich our knowledge, broaden our horizons. For instance, groupwork made it possible for exchanging ideas with students from all over the world. Kouvola is considered to be a quite boring place, how do u manage to spend your free time here? I learned something which made me feel happy. I have learned how to cook. I thought cooking is easy. But actually, it’s quite difficult. However, I never regret loving cooking. Cooking makes my daily life more interesting. You’re leaving in 2 months, is there anything you want to do before your leaving? One of my favorite things, aurora. I always heard that the aurora appears in Finland and it is really beautiful. The second thing I want to do is to enjoy sled dog pulling people. This is the experience I've never had before. What’s your future plan after graduation? Maybe I will be an English teacher in middle school. Although the pay is not very high, I can always stay with my students and I will always stay young no matter how old I am. What's more, there will be lots of holidays so that I can travel in my free time. Lingli Jing

BOOK REVIEW “Bearing that in mind, the question which remains to us is this: what is humanity? What do we have to do to keep humanity as one thing and not another?” - Han Kang, Human Acts
The human act was authored by Han Kang in 2017 and was originally translated from Korean to English. The genre of this novel is historical and literal fiction. The novel is based on partly a real historical event that took place in Gwangju city around the early 80s in Korea which was student uprising due to the government dictatorship expanding martial law in the country, closing universities, political activities and freedom of press that led to brutal violence and death of thousands of people that had lost their life’s. The story narrates the after math of Gwangju uprising and starts by a young boy called dong-ho who is worrying about whether it will rain, because of the thousands of dead bodies that he is currently taking care of and so the rain doesn’t damage the bodies before they are identified by their families and also, he is in search of his friend corpse but eventually he gets killed by the military. The novel goes on narrating from dong-ho, other students in Gwangju city in 1980 to other characters such as a journalist and dong-ho`s mother years after the uprising. They describe the event and later the extensive torture and the interrogation some of the characters in the novel went through and how they live currently. This novel was beautifully written even though the brutal and tragic event that took place and the way the book narrated such as unsettling souls and ghost was heart-rendering and a little bit scary. RECIPE
A truly simple, yet tasty recipe for us college students. If you are craving something creamy, saucy and is packed with protein, this one is for you. It literally takes 20 minutes for both the preparation and cooking. Instructions: 1. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees. 2. Spread the pasta/marinara sauce onto the bottom of a ceramic/ glass ramekin. Make two holes for the eggs. 3. Carefully crack in the eggs. Position them so they don’t overlap each other. 4.
Sprinkle on salt, black pepper and cayenne pepper.
5.
Top with olive oil, heavy cream and grated cheese.
6.
Bake until the yolks are set, about 10 minutes.
7.
Serve with toasts.
This dish is the ultimate comfort food with ingredients you can find right in your pantry. Hope you will enjoy this week recipe as much as I do! Trang Minh Le

Red Sparrow. The worst movie of 2018.
Sparrow… When a man hears this word during a conversation about movies, he usually thinks of Captain Jack. This March brought us another film that will be remembered because of this little bird. Everyone, please welcome something that is probably worse than Fifty Shades of Grey – Red Sparrow! Honestly, it’s difficult to describe how awful this movie is. It is a detective, but if you pay enough attention, you’ll know who the bad guy is by the middle of the movie. Paying attention, however, is the most difficult part here. The first half is so boring and interminable that you want to sleep or leave the cinema. Jennifer Lawrence, one of the most overestimated actresses, plays so freaking badly that it’s unbearable. You can easily count how many times her facial expression changes, or the moments when her voice reminds us that she is a professional actress, not some cripple. The whole plot here is a cliché. Russia and the post-Soviet republics, babushkas and balalaikas and a ballerina as the main character. The interesting thing, as the writers and Francis Lawrence must have thought, should have been the amount of nudity and sex. The cameraman lets you see Jennifer Lawrence from nearly every angle. Well, her private photos from the cloud have been on google for a while so why not, she has nothing to be ashamed of, right? Let me tell you, she looks way better on those photos than she does now. She is by no means sexy and a truly terrible actress. The only decent thing in this movie is its final. If you have more than 2 hours of your free time to waste, feel free to go and see it. If you are a loyal Jennifer Lawrence fan, feel free to go and see it. If neither of these applies to you, then stay at home and watch porn – better sex quality and more twisted plots are guaranteed. Or watch Fifty Shades of Grey as it is the lesser of two craps.
