EDITORIAL

First of all, we apologize for the delaying of the last issue, there’s a new printing system so our team members need time to figure that out.

In this issue, you can find my new profile about Gabby Hoang, many students know her as a student tutor, personally, she is a good friend of mine and it was really interesting to have an interview with my friend.

Also, as usual, there is weekly recipe for you, I know there is a big fan of our recipe part who is collecting every issue for the recipe lol. And of course don’t miss the movie review page to see the fun and unique review from our team member.

After I finish writing this, I will be on the trip to Tartu with the startup passion team, and yes, we mentioned it in our last issues and you can find many information about it. Anyway, have a nice time with this issue’s insider, hope you’ll enjoy reading it like always.

BOOK REVIEW

The cutting season is authored by mystery thriller and page-tuner novelist Attica Locke also, she is known for her other novel Black Water Rise. The genre of the novel is fiction, thriller, mystery, suspense and crime fiction.

The setting takes place in Louisiana at a restored plantation called belle vie, owned by Clancy family for generation. The manager of belle vie is an African American woman named caren gray who lived at the plantation her whole life also, she is a descended of the slaves who use to manage the plantation. The belle vie is a museum, historical site and event venue. Etc. They host events, weddings, school tours and they have actors who perform plays every day about how life was in the 1800s in belle vie.

Belle vie was disturbed one day when a murdered happened in the neighbourhood area between the two properties and one of them was owned by a large cooperate firm.

Caren was speculating the whole situation and she believed that something else was going on, especially when the local police started to frame one of Carens actors with a false accusation or she thought so.

Fast forward, Caren is drawn to the case by Who was killed¬ and who killed her, why and where was she originated from? As the mystery unfolds we get know more about Caren´s history, the plantation history connecting with the past and the present cases and also covering the slavery and an old mystery case that might have a connection with the current murder incident. As well as the current local workers and the injustice situations.

The novel describes the setting well and it covers the history as well some of the current events in 21s which makes it little interest.

EVENT OF THE WEEK

According to theworldcounts.com, 2.12 Billion Tons of waste fills our planet every year on the global scale. 99% of products which we buy will turn into trash within 6 months. That is a huge number I would say. Nature Mother is dying every day because of what we throw into environment. Scientists point out that no longer we will have to move to another planet for survival. It can be possible but maybe 50 years more, for now, it is totally infeasible. We can do small things together and big impacts will happen.

Let’s see. Bio-technology and eco-friendly products are invested with unlimited budgets with the hope of finding solutions for lives on the Earth. One thing we can do now as a normal person, who are not considered as scientists and engineers, is to bring your stuff to Treasure Exchange Week in Kouvola Campus of XAMK. It happened during the week 10 from Monday until Friday in Paja. The core value comprises of 3 words: ‘Bring, Take and Donate.’ When taking part in this event, you can give unused stuff to another person, which decreases the amount of trashes wasted into the environment. In the other hand, you can take anything from here to your house. That helps a lot in saving money, right.

You do not need to bring anthing if you take from it. They are there for you. Especially, the organizers are in the cooperation with the local Vieno’s kammari’s charity work. When there remain items, they will be donated for this organization. Honestly, to me, it is not a shame at all to use a second-hand product.

It depends on my personal needs and my desires to help the planet to stay away from polluting factors.

PROFILE

For this issue, I interviewed Gabby Hoang, she is from IB16 and she is a student tutor.

What made you want to be a student tutor?

When I first came to Finland, everything was new to me. Luckily, my tutors helped me a lot to fit in and to get used to everything in here. Therefore, I would like to help the new students as much as I can since I knew how difficult I would be when you came to a new country to start a new life as well start your study.

Will you suggest current first year students to be a student tutor this autumn?

I think becoming a student is not only a way to help new students but it is also a good way to help develope yourself. As for me, I think I have turned out to be more responsible, more mature as well as more organized after I became a tutor. Also, becoming a tutor might give you a chance to get to know more people like other tutors as well as the new studenets. So therefore, I strongly suggest that first year students should become a tutor.

Is there any advice you want to give to the new students?

My advice to all the new students is that they should be confident and don’t be afraid to make new friends. Also, they shouldn’t be hesitated to ask the teachers or the tutors if they have any question or struggle with their study or their new life. We are here to help them if they need us.

What is your future plan after graduation?

At the moment, I haven’t really got any certain plan for my life after graduation yet. However, I am thinking of taking a gap year after graduating to travel to countries I have never been to as I love travelling. After that, I will try to find a job that is related to my field of study.

PROCRASTINATION

Stop it immediately!

When we need to start a task which we do not enjoy, we usually tend to postpone it till the last minute.

Though sometimes these tasks are really valuable (like your homework for Finnish 4) and will help you to achieve your goal, anyway it does not mean that we are felling happy about doing them. Here we can play trick on our brain and get things done within shorter time framework and without using a lot of willpower. To understand how to do that, let`s dig into theory first.

Procrastination The feeling towards things we do not want to do has a similar brain pattern to a physical pain, that’s why we want to swap to something more pleasant. This is called Procrastination.

How procrastination works: 1. We get an unhappy feeling and discomfort because of the task we are about to do.

2. We move our attention onto a more pleasant or rewarding task.

3. Temporarily we get a happy feeling due to dopamine reward.

4. Over the long term we become less happy because we avoid the task.

Procrastination works in a way similar to addiction due to the reliance on short-term gain.

Habits and how they affect procrastination: Habits are automatic actions or behaviours which we perform after a certain trigger occurs. It`s our zombie mode which helps to free the mind.

1. The cue or trigger sets off the habit. This can be a number of things from an emotional state, to a location.

2. The routine - this is the zombie-like automatic response.

3. The reward - this is the moment when you feel good for following the habit and it is also what maintains the habit.

4. The belief - most habits only have power over us because we believe in them.

It's perfectly normal to feel negative feelings when you start to study but the important thing is the way you handle them. Studies show that people that don't procrastinate put their emotions aside and focus on the task at hand.

One of the main causes of procrastination is focusing on the product or outcome of the task you are committed to. When focusing on product you are imagining all of the work you need to do to finish that essay, whereas if you focus on process you only have to focus on the time going by. This reduces the feeling of discomfort and helps with procrastination.

How to improve your habits: 1. The cue o Try to avoid damaging cues!

2. The routine o Actively focus on building healthier habits. o Try to build a new ritual. o It helps to have a plan! You need to persist and adjust.

3. The reward o Can you substitute an emotional reward?

o Internal bets are a good idea. o Add a new reward to overcome previous habits. o Mini deadlines may help. Even setting the ÂŤquitting your jobÂť time will!

4. The belief o When things get stressful you may long to fall back into old habits and hanging out with friends who share the same philosophy as you can help you to maintain a course.

The Pomodoro technique: o This is where you focus on process rather than product. o Often done using 25 minutes of hard work and focus, followed by a 5 minute break which is like a reward when you are finished.

Eat the frog in the morning: o Do the most unpleasant and important task right after your morning routine and feel free the rest of the day!

PORTUGUESE-STYLED EGG TART

Hi! It has been a while since my last recipe. I am back with a pastry dish for you lovelies with a sweet tooth. It is the Portuguese-styled egg tart, with a flaky, buttery crust and a silky, creamy filling that can blissfully satisfy your craving. The procedure is a bit tricky, but since the recipe requires all basic ingredients, the outcome will be assuredly scrumptious if being done right.

Note: I used store-bought puff pastry since it is less time-consuming and works better than the puff pastry I have made from scratch in the past.

Ingredients: 1 roll of puff pastry ½ cup white sugar 3 egg yolks 1 cup milk ½ cup water ¼ cup flour

Instructions: 1.

Preheat the oven to 260 degrees.

2.

Combine the sugar and water in a saucepan over high heat. Cook for 1 minute until the sugar dissolved then remove from the heat and let it chill.

3.

In a smaller saucepan, pour in 2/3 of the milk and bring it to a boil till bubbles start to form.

4.

Whisk in the flour and the remaining amount of the milk in a bowl. Slowly add the hot milk while still whisking.

5.

Pour the sugar syrup in a steady stream into the milk and flour mixture. Add it back to the saucepan and continue cooking over low heat for 10 – 12 minutes till the mixture thickened. Let it chill for at least 5 minutes.

6.

Add the egg yolks into the chilled mixture. It is very important to let it cool down before mixing the yolks in because if it is still hot, we will end up with scrambled eggs.

7.

Strain the mixture using a sieve. Cut the puff pastry into circles which are roughly 2x bigger than the molds. Pour the mixture in, filling up to about ¾ of the shells.

8.

Bake the tarts for around 15 minutes or until they are golden brown and flaky looking. The filling should have a smooth golden color.

9.

Once done baking, transfer the tarts onto a rack and let them cool for at least 5 minutes before serving.

The movie I chose to write a review about is “Three billboards outside Ebbing, Missouri”. It was a random choice to be honest, me and my friend actually went to the amazing Studio 123 cinema to watch another movie but ended up watching this one. I’d say that luck was with me this time cause the movie was freaking amazing. I was actually surprised that I liked it that much because when I saw the name it seemed like one of those country movies you don’t really wanna get into, but after 10 minutes of watching it I actually started thinking to myself “god damn this movie has a pretty awesome storyline”. The movie circles around a tragic event that happened to a young girl a year ago, but the case was never cleared. Starting with what happened the movie takes us to each of the characters life and how they deal with the tragic event. It takes some turns that will surprise you but make the movie more interesting at the same time. The ending was quite good I think, not what I expected but it was the right message for the right storyline.  Stela Demaj
