Have you ever wondered how many calories you need to intake to be strong and healthy? Do you know how to train wisely and productive? How to succeed in sports not damaging your health? One of the exchange students, Minh-Dat David Vu, studying environmental engineering in XAMK, Mikkeli decided to share his knowledge about nutrition & fitness based on researchers` books, worldwide known coaches, and his own experience. Here are some points from the seminar:
• Going hard immediately is unnecessary. 80% of the result comes from 20% of efforts. So, 3 times per
week with an hour to hour and a half should be enough for a beginner. • The base for healthy life: Nutrition, sleep and training! People often underestimate the power of sleep and how much nutrition has power over training. If you are planning on loosing weight and you don’t make sure you have a calorie deficit the training does not matter if you still eat more than your body can burn. • Human body takes calories from whatever food you put into it however if you want to stay healthy it may be better to focus on intaking calories from right sources. • There are macronutrients such as fiber, protein, fat, and protein that must be considered in everyday diet. There are also other nutrient that one must consider such as vitamins, or supplements like protein powder or creatine if you aim is to get bigger muscles. • And again, the rule 80/20 can be applied to your eating habits: 80% Clean and 20% of any some cheatmeals. • Set Meal plan – it is easier to follow a healthy lifestyle if you have planned beforehand. • Progression: more you push, easier your body adapts. • Exercise selection – it is important to workout what feel good for your body. • Rest periods between the exercises is not as important for your body. Nutrition and fitness is a part of our lives that many underestimate. It helps boost good mood and positive body image. These types of seminars are a great way to share knowledge for those who already are interested in this topic or for those who have just started their journey. Daria Chekalskaia

On 24-25th of November Casemet Oy organized its industrial hackathon. 5 teams of students studying IT, environmental engineering and business management from XAMK, Savonia and Aalto University competed for 24 hours for 1000-euro prize. Casemet Oy is family-owned Finnish company, mainly specialize on metal enclosing solutions. Casemet strives the constant development of manufacturing processes, and hackathon was a right support of this aim. The company came up with 3 cases. The first bid calculation task was about creating a solution for both accurate and cost-competitive calculations. The second tasks focused on forecasting the demand & usability of the forecasts and capacity management. The last case targeted on reducing profit losses by improving factory logistics. Especially for hackathon participants, Casemet organized a company tour at their production facility and showed a variety of modern innovative technologies. During the hackathon the participants tested the devices like mobile robotics with the MiR100 internal transport robot, Microsoft HoloLens and Ruuvi Bluetooth Sensor Beacons. After 24 hours all teams suggested their creative solutions. The jury, consisted of Casemet directors and CEO´s, rewarded two students’ teams. The winning team got 600 euro prize for innovative “pirate map” application. The second place, a team of XAMK students, came up with the idea of RFID tracking chip.
Testing Microsoft HoloLens
Hackathon was supported by Observis – Mikkeli IT company creating geographic information-based app, and Mikkeli development Miksei Ltd. Sponsorship was provided by Hermia Group. Anastasiia Abgarian

BOOK REVIEW
ALEPH BY PAULO COELHO
¨If I believe I will win, then victory will believe in me. No life is complete without a touch of madness.¨ Paulo Coelho, Aleph Aleph is considered an international best-selling novel. The novel was published in 2011 and it was authored by Brazilian writer Paulo Coelho. Also, he is known for his other novel The Alchemist. Aleph is about the authors personal self-journey. Although the book is categorized as fiction it has a real-life reflection to it. The storyline goes by a self-discovery or rediscovery, forgiveness of past and a purpose that flows with adventure. Paulo set his journey by traveling through countries and ends up taking train through Moscow with a several characters that you will get to know them throughout the book. Also, on his journey he meets a young female who is the reincarnate of the woman who he has meet 500 years ago. Personally, I think this novel is a bit complicated but at the same time it has interesting quotes, different dimension about life and storyline that is different compared to the other novels. Also, some part of the story goes into realms and previous existences. If that freaks you out its okay, try to understand the bigger picture of the narrative. As there is a wisdom and a lesson behind it. Plus, while reading the book, it felt to me that I was reading the writer's personal journal. Where he shared openly his inner most, deepest feelings, his fears and the challenges that slow down him in his life. I hope you enjoy reading the Aleph. Let us know what you think of this novel! PROFILE
SARI PARKKINEN For this issue, I interviewed our German language teacher, Sari Parkkinen. If you are studying or planning to study German, don’t miss this profile. How long have you been teaching German? I came to work for this university of applied science since 2009. Mostly I teach on another campus. What is the most interesting thing for you in teaching German? I love German, I am happy now I can teach German, I don’t get the opportunity every term because it is an optional language. I mostly teach English but when I studied in university German is my major so I am happy that I can teach German. And I spent almost two years in Germany in my life. Is there any tip you would give to those who are studying German language? Try to listen and watch some German media in your free time, because there’s so many English around us, go to YouTube and find something in German. Is there any German movie or series you would like to recommend? My favorite German TV-series at the moment is Jäljet päättyvät Berliiniin (Letzte Spur Berlin), available in YLE Areena. As a mother of four children I don’t have much time to watch movies.

HOROSCOPE There is only one month left for this year, 2017, but who says we can’t make the best out of it. I know that most of our readers maybe think that horoscope is not real but I like to believe that everything is written in the stars and hopefully after you read this article you will believe in the stars too. Aries (Mar 21- Apr 19) Hey to every Aries out there who deserves this month more than everyone else, it’s your time to have fun guys, it your time to enjoy this month at its best. Even though you have a few days left to have the fun you deserve you need to let your work/studies aside and just chill for a week or so, it will all get better after you go to a local pub with your friends and have a little throw back for the ‘good times’ when you didn’t have to stress yourself so much. Don’t overthink and just live this month to its fullest. Taurus (Apr 20 – May 20) For you, Taurus, its time you take some risks and have a new adventure. For this month love runs deep for you guys. You will either get to meet someone new and find out what real love feels like, or you will get a clearer picture of the love in question, if you’re already in a relationship. You should own the love you are exuding and throw some of that energy into your creative goals. Gemini (May 21 – June 20) It’s time you give some importance and attention to your relationships, especially to your romantic partner and even the stars know it. You have to be more open to future possibilities that will benefit you just the right way, and if you’re single then do not close any doors yet. If you are in a relationship you should open yourself more, let your partner inside you mind and heart. Just let go!
Cancer (June 21 – July 22) You are mentally clear and I would say stronger than ever this month but be careful you can get lost into your mind if you overthink. This is the month when you make some big decisions about your relationships and any other action you have been deciphering. Although people seem to be more attracted to you this month, don’t forget to give yourself a break and focus on your needs. Leo (July 23 – Aug 22) You always seem to be in a rush, wanting to make things happen immediately and by that you overwork yourself so that’s why this month you should try and relax a bit. You need to focus yourself elsewhere, and the best place to do that would be by focusing you attention at the people you love and love you back, because the people in your life right now, are the ones who are going to be there for you in the future as well. Virgo (Aug 23 - Sep 22) You have been through so much haven’t you? You still have wounds that make your heart ache every time you remind yourself of them don’t you? If so then this is the month when you get to heal yourself. You should open your heart more and participate in future events happening around you. Not only will you get a fresh start and healed wounds but you will also get to celebrate different occasions. Stela Demaj [The second part will follow in a future issue...or will it? Ed]

EXCHANGE VIEW
SOMETIMES IT SUCKS... Last year we had an interesting course, Intercultural Issues in Finland. Having spent a little over six months in Malta now, I find myself reflecting to that course a lot. Most of the time Malta is my personal paradise, but not ALL the time. Especially when I am sick or face an obstacle, I tend to get very annoyed and I admit it – then I just hate Malta. However, I understand that it is actually nothing serious and it is a part of this entire process of moving from one country and culture to another. The honeymoon is now over and I start to see things that are workingvery different to what I have used to and sometimes it gets to me. Sometimes it just all starts to annoy me at the same time: the terrible condition of pavements, the lack of proper customer service, the lack of even the most simplest manners, the traffic which is just insane and dangerous, seeing a mother hit her child for running around at the waiting room for the doctor’s, the noisy neighbours that won’t let me sleep, the cops that won't necessarily come to tell the neighbours to shut it, things like that. So far I’ve had three days when I have been in a very dark place with myself – on those days I’ve been thinking that no, I don’t want to live in Malta for long but no, I don’t want to return to Finland either, so what the fudge am I supposed to do, where should I then go? But, then I decide to pull myself together. I’ve found a cure for those days: I grab a cappuccino, walk to the beach and just sit and watch the ocean. It calms me down and it makes me remember why I am here: it is already the end of November and I still don’t have to wear a jacket outside, we can stay out all day if we want. No snow, now freezing cold. Plus I have already made many great friends, I have a great job and a lovely new house. Sometimes it sucks real bad, but in the end, life sometimes sucks, no matter the country or the culture. Suvi Karell

MACARONI SALAD
Whenever I say I am making salads, people always ask “Are you on a diet?”. The idea that salads are just a bunch of vegetables thrown together with some kind of dressings needs to be changed. It is like an outdated salads propaganda. People should have fun making and eating them. The salad recipe I am bringing this week is one dish that you can make beforehand, goes well with every entrée and is absolutely not traditional at all. Let’s go. How to make it: 1. Cook the macaroni in salted water for approximately 8 minutes, drain it but do not run it under any kind of water. After most of the water is drained out, transfer it to a large bowl and tossing it constantly for about 2 minutes. This helps the macaroni cool off and have a starchy consistency, therefore it could “grasp” onto the dressing better. 2. Chop the bell pepper, onion and sausage into half the size of the macaroni. Put them in the same bowl with the macaroni. 3. In a separate bowl, combine mayonnaise, mustard, salt, ground black pepper, vinegar and sugar together. 4. Check to make sure the macaroni is completely cool. If it is still warm, what happens when you mix it with the dressing is everything will become extremely greasy, and we do not want that. 5. Mix the macaroni & vegetables and the dressing together. It might you look like you have made too much dressing at first but as you keep stirring, it will gradually look fine. 6. Refrigerate the salad for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight. As simple as that. Now you can go show the folks who still think salads are a punishment this recipe, or even better, make the recipe and serve it to them. Enjoy! Trang Le

KENNETH BRANAGH, PENÉLOPE CRUZ, WILLEM DAFOE
Director: Kenneth Branagh / Writers: Michael Green, Agatha Christie Mystery, Crime, Drama The movie is based on Agatha Christie’s classic novel. The story is about world famous detective Hercule Poirot, who ends up by accident in a middle of a murder mystery on his travel back to home from Jerusalem. The train is caught in snow in midst of wilderness, whilst a murder occurs without witnesses and behind locked doors. Mr. Poirot attempts to find the murderer who remains onboard, but even with all the effort all the suspects seem equally innocent. What is more, a tragedy from the past starts lifting its head, and it all seems to be somehow connected. The mystery begins to seem too deep to be revealed, even by the great Hercule Poirot. I had high hopes for the movie, and in this case, I feel that all my expectations were met. “Murder on the Orient Express” keeps its viewer in a tight grip which lasts throughout the film. The cast consists of great actors, and all do remarkable work with their execution. I am fond of the style of this movie and there was healthy relation between excitement, humour and drama.
