INNOVATE OR DIE
No distractions. Only work. Free food, probably, was not the main reason to come to this event. Applying your innovative ideas, show up and make connections with local companies, get real-life experience (and 1000 euro if you are creative enough) – these were real motivation for 300 students to come to Innovate or Die! Around 15 XAMk students tested themselves in creating an innovative solution for different local companies within 24 hours. Sleepless night, fun working hours and unforgettable experience. Cases from the companies were challenging and required pre-investigation, tough working for 24 hours and perfect pitch. Hot to attract more people to the company? How to change people’s perceiving of the company? Hot to create a new product? You think you can manage? Apply next time! Strong points about innovation process in the team: - You need to know everyone`s strengths and weaknesses. Be ready that another person can have completely different approach and vision. - Think about your team members. Some of you can be night owls and it`s not a problem to stay long hours working. But what if they perform better in the mornings? - Each idea must be written. What is not written – doesn’t exist. - Sharing responsibilities according to the skills and interests. - Chemistry in the team. Kindness and openness to all crazy ideas. Support & sharing food. Right now there is a boom of hackathons, competitions. If you care about your future, participate as much as you can. 2 days experience – your way to contribute to your development. Daria Chekalskaia

Official poster Do you know how to have a safe sex? How to protect yourself from STD’s? What is HIV and what do you need to know about it? Wondering the same questions, a group of XAMK students arranged a seminar on sex education in Mikkeli Campus. Organizers of this event are international environmental engineering students: Anh Nguyen, Nguyen Duy, Phuong Minh, and Lim Zen Yang. The topic was selected because sensitive attitude towards sex disturbs sharing info about health protection. So, the students decided to start a frank dialogue XAMK community. Phuong says, the support for the event for was provided by Finnish red cross, HIV point, student union Kaakko and the Finnish Union of Engineering Students. The event consisted of two parts. On 8th of November, the organizers promoted the main event in the main lobby. They prepared a stand, handed out condoms and invited a band, that performed on the stage in Dexi. PROFILE
AYLA SEYEDIN For this issue, I interviewed Ayla Seyedin, she is a game design student from Romania and also a cosplayer. Why did you choose to study in Finland?
Because the possibilities I have here which I don’t have from where I come from, Romania. The people here are friendly and the environment of education is much better. I noticed that you are a cosplayer, so how do you feel about being a cosplayer?
Well I have been cosplaying for two years now, I cosplay for conventions and my own free time. It’s fun to be a different character rather than your personal self. Do you think your study field is kind of related to cosplay?
In a way. Because they both require imagination and a creative mind, in game design I create my own characters based on the things I like, probably cosplay them and be the character that I am thinking of. Is there any other interest besides cosplaying?
Crafting. Like usually I use the materials I find around which help me make my own cosplays. I also use materials like clay and other small objects to make jewelries and smaller crafts. What question do you want to ask to our next interviewee? Why did you choose to study in Xamk?

EXCHANGE VIEW NEW CHALLENGES
Though content writing was great, I faced some difficulties outside the office: my son caught every possible disease from day care, since we did not have resistance to the bacteria and viruses here. I needed to be at home a lot with him. This reduced my sick leave: in Malta the system is very different compared to Finland! You have a certain amount of days in a year you are entitled to use for sick leave for your children and yourself. I ended up having to use all of them, since as said, son caught everything!
I tried to negotiate with the company that on those days that my son is ill, I could work remotely from home, since my tasks were something I could in fact do remotely. This hughever (see, I did it again) was not possible according to the company policies. They offered me a chance to do use my vacation days in case my son is ill again, which seemed unfair to me, since after all, I wrote 2000-5000 words more in a week that was required of me. It was time to look for another job. I noticed a job announcement of a position of a brand executive for an online casino. They told they were looking for someone who could work both in Finnish and Swedish. I hesitated for a while, since my Swedish is not completely fluent, but on the other hand I like the language and can use it pretty well anyways. I decided to take my chances. It paid off, I got invited to an Skype interview. It went perfect and the next day I already had another interview with the brand manager. After the interview I received a case study. I needed to come up with a plan on how to turn non-profitable customers profitable, plan an entire campaign that included cross-selling and finally, write a blog article. I did it all in just two nights, 6 000 words, since the task was just so interesting. And I got hired! Lesson here: take your chances, believe in yourself, go for it! Suvi Karell 9
BANANA BREAD
For some reasons, I had always been hesitated when talking about making breads from scratch in the past, until I found out about banana bread – the easiest and most fantastic bread of them all in my opinion. This recipe requires no mixer or expensive equipment whatsoever. The hardest step is actually the waiting time while it is in the oven. Let’s jump right in. How to make it: 1. Pre-heat the oven to 180°C. 2. With a whisk, mix butter and sugar in a bowl till fluffy and light. 3. Beat in the egg and whisk well. 4. Peel the bananas and add them into the bowl. Mash thoroughly until there is no visible chunk. 5. Add flour, baking soda and salt. Fold the mixture in with a spatula. 6. Mix in as many almonds and chocolate chips as you like. A little too much chocolate won’t hurt anybody! 7. Once well mixed, pour the batter into a mold and spread it out evenly. Top it off with more almonds for decoration. 8. Put it in the oven for approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes. I know this is a painfully long time but trust me, it is worth every minute. 9. When you stick a toothpick in the middle of the bread and it comes out clean, take it out of the oven and let it rest for a few minutes. 10. Cut the bread into slices and enjoy with a cup of tea or hot chocolate of your choice. And that’s it! A warm banana bread with oozing chocolate pieces and aromatic toasted almonds is waiting for you to make. I have tried this recipe plenty of times and I always had fun making it. It is perfect for sharing with friends on a cosy Sunday night gathering or even by yourself. Good luck! Trang Le

STUDIO 2 Movie that I personally have waited for a long time. I enjoyed the movie “Wonder Woman” (2017), so I was hyped up to see all the Justice League heroes in this one movie. "Justice League" is sequel to the “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” (2016). The movie is more logical if you have already seen the “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice”, but it is still fully understandable without having seen it. "Justice League" continues where the previous movie was left off. Superman has now been deceased for a while, and Batman’s visions of Steppenwolf’s return has become a reality. Steppenwolf is a hellish creature that was defeated in a war 5000 years ago, that unified humans with folks of Atlantis and the warrior women of Themyscira. With all the races unified they were able to win the Steppenwolf and exile him and his army from earth. Now after 5000 years has passed, humans aren’t working together neither recognise the existence of the other supernatural human races. Without the previous union the bad forces see the world to be in a weak state, and therefore become rise to destroy and take over the whole world. To win against the Steppenwolf’s army, Batman begins to aggregate the union back together to fight the common enemy. The movie is highly visual and full of action scenes, where supernatural creatures fight each other and try stop injustice from happening. It is not too serious and there is always humour added to it. This was the first movie where Aquaman had a proper part. They succeeded to make him more credible, because the comic book version of him was not too impressive. The plot in this movie is quite simple, but to me the main point in this one is the fighting scenes and the high visual side it has. Movie tells the main points of the origin stories of the characters. I can see that the makers assumed the viewers already to know something, or they are saving the detailed origin stories to the character’s own films. It can be a good thing, since it keeps the curiosity towards the new movies alive. Overall, I enjoyed the movie, it was simple but amusing and I enjoyed how the film looks visually.
