DANCE HIP-HOP IN MIKKELI!
Daria shows how old-style hip-hop looks like.
What you lack in Mikkeli? What is missing in your daily routine? For Daria Chekalskaya, 2nd year student in XAMK, it was hip-hop classes. Not content with the absence of hip-hop studio in Mikkeli, she decided to open her own classes. According to Daria, open the hiphop classes was surprisingly easy. She needed only to contact the responsible person and schedule the time. Daria says, that her mission as a hip-hop teacher is to show, what is real dancing. In her personal belief, dance is something more than just physical exercises to the music. That’s why her classes are so varied and won’t get bored. A typical training includes numerous parts: warming-up, learning basic hip-hop movements, pair and group assignments, freestyle, selflearning exercises, work out and stretching.
Learning hip-hop doesn’t stop on know how to do "SpongeBob" or "running man". Hip-hop is primarily a dance, and dance requires understanding the music. Thus, Daria devotes some time for developing students’ musical comprehension. When everyone in a room is sweaty, with reddish cheeks, and guzzle water, she gathers a circle and tells about the roots of hip-hop culture, or explains how to feel the rhythm and show it with a body.
You might see this promo in Kasarmina.
Classes have a free entry and do not require previous dancing experience. The list of prerequisites is quite short. Dancing mood and a pair of nice sneakers is far more
than enough. To feel the vibes of hip-hop, welcome to Daria’s dance classes in room U232A in Wed 16.30-18.00 and Fri 16.00-17.30.
Cover photo: Good stretching is just as important as well warming-up

Finally, Mikkeli's underground hip-hop community heaved in sight! On the first Saturday of October local rappers and DJs united to give away pleasant vibes to those who wanted to spend three hours listening to the high-quality noise. That was a big step to the development of a hip-hop culture in Mikkeli city. Usually, nobody shows the skills on the public, but it should be done since it is the only way to build a strong community and attract more people to it. This kind of events let the performers express themselves and the public fills the culture, and overall unite people to enjoy music and atmosphere. The organizations behind Lokafest'17 are companies Ohjelmatoimisto Trubaduurit and TaaviMedia. Performers were DJ Teal, rappers Otto A. and Jakaali, DJ BrandanAdams and rapper from Helsinki area, Flyer, with DJ Teal (Flyer x Teal). The event was held first and not the last time. «We will definitely bring new noise on upcoming summer but also few indoor events this year» - promised Roope Nykänen, one of the persons behind the idea of creating Lokafest’17. If you produce, dance or just listen to hip-hop – keep your eyes open, you need to be in the next events! Daria Chekalskaia

BOOK REVIEW
THINKING, FAST AND SLOW Thinking, Fast and Slow is a best-selling book by Daniel Kahneman, which was published in 2011. It was the 2012 winner of National Academies Communication Award for best creative work that helps the audience to understand the topics in behavioural science, engineering and medicine. The book is about the researches that David Kahneman had conducted over decades with Amos Tversky, another psychologist. This book is all about understanding how brain works, and understanding the two different ways the brain forms thoughts; System 1 and System 2. System 1 is fast, automatic, common and emotional and System 2 is the opposite, it is slow, effortful, uncommon and logical. The book has many experiments which highlights the difference between these two systems, and how they work in different situations. Reading Thinking, Fast and Slow was very interesting, because it gave different point of view to common issues, I have to be honest, it wasn’t the fastest book to read, because the book explains every single part of brain and System 1 and System 2 in detail, and basically the reader has to be totally concentrated while reading the book, because once you missed

a detail, you wouldn’t understand the next chapter at all. The book is very well written, and it puts the readers in different situations through the exercises which makes the readers realize that the authors of this book know what they are talking about.
This book definitely made me change the way I thought I used to think. Does that make any sense? I highly recommend this book! Setareh Nourzad Abkenar
PROFILE STELA DEMAJ Stela Demaj, our Albanian student from IB17. She talked something about her country Albania. Why did you choose Finland for higher education? Because one of my friends who comes from Albania introduced me to this school, she told me about the good program they have so I decided to try it. What do you think is the biggest difference between the education system of Finland and Albania? Well, in Albania they try to push students to learn a lot of stuff, they don’t concentrate in one subject. In Finland as far as I have seen, it is like the opposite, they only concentrate in one field. The
lecturers in Albania don’t pay too much attention on each student, but they push them to work really hard, give a lot of homework, students in Albania usually get really tired of school. How would you describe your country or people in three words? Loyal, helpful, and nice. If I had to choose one bad quality of Albanians that would be that they can be judgmental sometimes, but only about small things. They would never judge someone based on their race, religion and so on.
WhichAlbanian tourist attractions would you recommend the most? I would say the northern Albania is one of the most beautiful tourist attractions, there are places called Theth and Valbona which have a lot beautiful mountains, And on the southern side of Albania there is a city called Dhermi that has the most beautiful sea that I have ever seen, the sea is not with sand but rocks so that makes it cleaner and blue like a crystal. People our age can always have fun there. And some tips about traveling in Albania? You have to take a map with you because not everyone knows English. Maybe they won’t be able to help even though they want to. Are there any restaurants with traditional Albanian food you’d recommend for people visiting Albania? There are many good restaurants in Tirana which serve traditional Albanian dishes, usually they are located in suburban area of Tirana instead of the city center. Lingli Jing

VIETNAMESE SUMMER ROLLS
Now I know summer has left us a few months ago, and dark days of snow and icy roads await. But I believe food should be enjoyed whenever you feel like it, no matter the weather. These scrumptious rolls will satisfy your cravings for a fresh, healthy treat after that meaty scotch eggs recipe last week. Plus, I will also show you how to make not one, but two kinds of dipping sauce. Here we go. Instructions: - Soak rice vermicelli in hot water for 5 minutes. Drain with a colander and rinse under cold water for 30 seconds. Leave it to drain again. - Fill up a pot with water, bring it to a boil. Add pork and cook for ~25 minutes on low-medium heat. When no pink-coloured juice can be seen when pressing on the meat and a chopstick can poke through easily, it’s ready. Slice it as thinly as possible. - Rinse the vegetables. Cut cucumber into slender slices and grate the peeled carrot to the same length. - Quickly dip 1 rice paper into a bowl of water to soften, place it on a smooth surface. Put lettuce, cucumber, carrot and about 2 mint leaves on top and roll once. Add boiled pork then fold left & right edges of the paper and roll it up. Repeat the process. - Mince garlic and chili then combine all the ingredients to make the sauce. With the peanut sauce, microwave peanut butter and soy sauce first, add the rest of the ingredients then slowly pour in water till you got the wanted consistency. - Serve the rolls with the sauces and dig in. That’s it. You are an averagely tricky rolling process away from one tasty dish. I will take a break next week and Seti is going to be in charge. See y’all soon with more recipes! Trang Le

Applying a specialisation training place was not an easy thing to do, vol 2. Finally, after months and months of trying, I finally got an email from a company here in Malta. I had applied for a content writer position as an intern, and the company was interested. It felt just very unreal! They asked me to write a 500-word sample text for them. I wrote it, sent it to them and couple of weeks went by without hearing from them. It was torture! I couldn’t wait for much longer, since I had so many things I should start arranging if they accepted me. I contacted them and asked if they had gotten my test and they said yes, and apologised for not responding earlier. Had been a busy couple of weeks. After this we set a date for a Skype interview. I remember preparing myself for it, feeling a bit nervous and mostly, excited. I sat in the second floor of the main building in our Kouvola campus and waited for the Skype call to come. The call lasted for about 30 minutes and I think I did well. Then there was two other Skype interviews later that week. After that the company called my references
and finally the company called me and told me the good news. I got accepted! I started to jump and scream for joy over the phone and I just remember feeling so happy - was this really happening? And oh my god, I had only a month before the internship would start. I needed to still finish all my courses and write my thesis, and at the same time try to find an apartment from Malta. This was absolutely the worst time to start looking, since the high season was starting. Prices were high as fudge and apartments were rented in minutes. Not days, but literally - minutes. Luckily my friend Taina helped me and finally, two weeks before coming here I had gotten a nice, brand new apartment from a quiet area, 20 minutes walking distance from my work. My child got accepted to a day care near our apartment, so after all the stress everything fell to its place. Suvi Karell

EQUALITY AND JUDGEMENTS We’re in the 21st century, year 2017, and we still hear people, mostly teenagers, talking about the inequality that represents our society. We hear about people being called names they don’t deserve to be called just because of their race, sex, sexual orientation, or religion beliefs. I myself am a white 18-year-old girl from Albania so let me tell you a little bit about the country I was born and raised. Albania is a small closed-minded country, everything I mentioned before happens in my country, the people are not bad people but they seem to judge people based on what they see on the outside. Albania is just one example of these kind of countries. Other countries that would be in the same set as Albania are Iran, Nigeria, China, Russia etc. Inequality exists even in the education system, schools. It begins with sexism, teachers giving more attention to male students then to female students and it continues with racism, students with different skin color/or even race being punished worst then students of the same color as the teachers for the exact same act. Then there’s the sexual orientation issues. Being a teenager is a confusing thing so you can’t have everything figured out at your 18s, now can you? But that doesn’t mean that everything ‘we’ as teenagers/late teenagers feel toward other people is ‘just a phase’ or a ‘I’m trying to be cool joke’. Being gay, lesbian, queer, bisexual, trans, pansexual, asexual etc. can be even called a
10
sin in some religions, these people get judged and called names just because they’re out of the ordinary, because they have feeling for the same gender or for every kind of gender. When will people understand that what we feel cannot be chosen by our parents or by the society? These judgments begin with the adults and then continue within teens. In my opinion, life is too short to waste it on judging people based on things that don’t define them as human beings. It would be for the best if we as human beings thought before saying hurtful things to the people who don’t deserve and start realizing that everyone is different in their own ways and we cannot try to change that because that’s what makes every individual differ from the others. I think we as students should raise our voice and try to treat everyone equally as they deserve to be treated. I believe we as students can change the world little by little, we can make these little things that would result in lower number of suicide and higher number of smiles on people’s face. Good opportunities should be evenly distributed between everyone, no matter someone’s race, gender, religion, sexual orientation or anything else. We were all born equal so we should all be treated equally. Stela Demaj

Sequel of Blade runner (1982), a story of a young second generation replicant blade runner. In former history humans engineered human like biorobots called replicants to do all their slave work and outside of earth missions. All went well until the replicants turned against humans. Replicants had to be hunted down by blade runners and executed or “retired” as they would call it. In Blade Runner 2049 the ecosystem in earth is fully collapsed, and there isn’t much information of the time before the great explosion (which in timeline takes place in between the first and the second movie). Nation is living in a new era without long term history. Humans have now created a new model of replicants, designed not to turn against their makers and unable to lie. The new model replicants are now used to destroy the older models from the planet and serve human kind. In Blade Runner 2049 one of the second generation replicant is on duty and discovers something, that leads everybody to question if everything they ever believed in is false. The movie is visually very impressive and showy. Storyline is capturing, and the movie includes famous actors that deliver their characters credibly. I was also pleasantly surprised to see a Finnish actress in a Hollywood film. Best movie that has come out in theatres for a while now, I strongly suggest.
