W
elcome back to a new academic year and the first Insider of the semester.
First of all I want to welcome our old (Suvi and Setareh) and new (Hafsa, Lingli, Long, Lotta, Stela, Trang, and Wonder) editorial staff here in Kouvola Campus. We are now expanding Insider staff to also include Mikkeli Campus with Anastasia and Daria. To keep our international image, Suvi is our overseas reporter, as she is working and studying remotely from the sunny island of Malta. Nice for some! As usual, we are going to bring you our regular columns of the movie review and student cooking tips. We will also continue to report on events and happenings on and around campus both in Kouvola and Mikkeli, as well as other places. Look out for student union and organisation happenings, Patteri Entrepreneurship Society events (one is coming quite soon), the Kouvola Campus International Week, and so on. This week the Kouvola Campus was hosting some guests from Croatia and Delhi. You can read about the experiences of two of the lecturers as they answered some questions put to them by Insider. Two visiting students from Delhi have also written an article based on their cultural experiences so far in Finland. From Mikkeli, Anastasia and Daria bring you the Mikkeli Art & Design Week and the Digital Quest. Suvi introduces her series of articles set in Malta, which we will run all through this semester, telling of her experiences of balancing work, studying and family life. We hope you will enjoy this issue, and as always, if you have any wishes for future articles, complaints or congratulations, tips about happenings, or have your own article to submit, please let us know at insider@xamk.fi.

D
o you think you know Mikkeli well enough? DKS Quest will make you doubt it!
Already fifth time activists have organised the Digital City Adventure Quest which challenged people to bike or walk around the city for 24 hours searching for the special checkpoints located all around Mikkeli. To find the locations you needed to solve the tasks and follow the map in the mobile application. The winner got 1000 euro gift card for traveling and the active participants had a chance to try Bungee Jumping for free.
Which place in Mikkeli would you think about if you see “TITO xx.xx-xx 13.4 -88”? Jimi Roos, the winner of 2016 and 2017, says it was the hardest task with searching for the clue for 6 hours on a rainy night and finally solving the puzzle in the pet`s cemetery in Kalevankangas. To win the game, Jimi needed not only to come up with the solutions really fast but also build a strategy beforehand. Even though prepared, he biked more than 50 kilometers around the city. “I biked at least 50km and my mates around 75km, so I would say I was the brain of the group and they were the muscles.” – Jimi Roos, the winner of the DKS Quest.

The checkpoints were created by Saara Vauhkonen, XAMK Master Degree student. It took around two months to plan all 30 checkpoints and make the game alive. Saara believes the most awesome experience of this process was to see more than 100 people playing and enjoying the game and the most challenging part was the technical side with running the application all the time.

MAD DESIGN MARKET 2017
Aroma candles Minimalistic wooden clocks MAD Design market is an event organized within a framework of Mikkeli Art & Design Week 2017. On 23th of September, 47 designers from all over Finland gathered in Mikaeli Concert Hall to present and sell their goods. The market is running for the third time. Until then, it took place in Tempo Culture House, but due to lack of parking places and difficult access for disabled people the market moved to Mikaeli, said Elisa Hillgen, artist and organizer of the event. On this design market, one can find handmade soap and ceramics, wooden bow ties, candlesticks resembling a melting ice, colourful
hobby-horses, three-dimensional wooden snowflakes, black-andwhite graphics, minimalistic silver rings or jewellery and accessories from excess leather. According to Pauliina Rundgren, designer and the market’s coordinator, the key trends of modern Finnish design are vividly presented here. She says Finnish designers are searching for inspiration in nature. Simple muted colours and natural materials are at the peak of this tendency. The second thing is using the recycled materials, as for example bracelets made from old bicycle tires. Paulina claims that Finnish designers are very popular in Asia, especially in Japan and China. She said, back in the 60s, Japan was in love with large famous Finnish companies like Arabia or Artek, but nowadays local independent designers are gaining popularity. In her opinion, the key feature of Finnish design, which makes it so popular, is simplicity. Simple, natural, and minimalistic- these qualities make it ultimate and endless, summarises Paulina. A
ppro was a social come together event held by Kupla, which is the student organization aiming to organize events and parties for XAMK students. It was organized to award the individual with the most stamps by the end of the night. The chilly rainy evening of September 20th let the game begin. Students gathered at Seiväs club, just a few meters away from school. Here students picked their passes and paid for the party fee. The enthusiastic students marched in groups, mostly comprising of four people. Then, off they went to accomplish their mission. At around nine o’clock was time for the after party where all the fun and letting lose begin. Bar after bar, club after club and sometimes restaurants in which the teams collected their stamps. For every drink or food they buy in a participating bar, club or restaurant, they get a stamp. Well enthusiastic team members worked through the beaming night life. Round and round they went with cheers and nothing better than a good time with friends and a little booze here and there.

As the night life came to life, the more the game neared to end, the more fun was about to begin. I always love the sound of after parties like word has a ring to it that just makes me more excited. Tik tak tik tak, it was time to announce the winner, I must stay for this kind of challenge, well you must be super determined to win such a highly contested competition, it was great to see people work so hard together and so much energy they put in this. Amarillo played lots of great hits, and behold, the winner was announced, a proud MR Eino, congratulations were in order sir. The after party with the music was booming, the lights on the dance floor were beaming that was so inviting. The great night filled with drinks, music, cheer and a lot of dancing. The room lighted up once the group students swarmed in, it was like they had just breathed life into the place.
The night was giving way for the day but not before the students were well-treated with great performances from the great Tippa. Tippa-T is a rap musician, he also does some reggae. He has done songs such as Mehu, Iso kirkol and his latest album TRAPPIST-EP was highly recognised this year. He has been number 15 on the official Finnish album list. Thanks to his talents, we have great songs to listen to and enjoy. The party goers danced the night away and finally it was day break and time to go home. For some like us, to curse the day, we choose a good party over studying for an exam, please do not try this anyway.

PANCAKES
SOME GOOD OLD FLUFFY PANCAKES TO START THE DAY
Pancake, or flap-jack – as some may call, is an American’s alltime favourite breakfast. The ingredients can be found right in your very kitchen and the instruction can’t be simpler. Plus, if measuring and mixing aren’t the first things you fancy doing in the morning, the batter can be made in advance! So instead of feeling hungry and looking haggard through the first class period, why not just looking haggard, with a full stomach of deliciousness? Instructions: 1. Whisk the egg, sugar and milk in a bowl. 2. In another bowl, mix the dry ingredients together with a fork for ~30 seconds. This is a substitute for sifting, as one of my favorite chefs said, has been outdated since the 80s. And washing a single fork is much less of a tedious task than a sifter. 3. Mix the dry ingredients in with the egg-milk-sugar mixture till you can no longer see any dry flour. Add the melted butter and vanilla extract and mix again. Be careful not to overmix, as it can result in hard-rock pancakes, and that’s the last thing we want. 4. Add a tiny bit of butter to a non-stick pan, pour the batter in till bubbles form on top, flip over and leave it for ~2 more minutes. When you have got a stack of hot, buttery cakes, put MORE butter and shizzle maple syrup/honey on top. Voilà, pancakes! Trang Le

What you need: • Dry ingredients: • 120g all purpose flour • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder • ½ teaspoon baking soda • a pinch of salt • Wet ingredients: • 240ml milk • 30g sugar (yes, sugar is considered a wet ingredient, look it up) • 1 egg • 1 tablespoon melted butter • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

A SUNNY HELLO FROM MALTA T
his article starts a series of reports from the sunny European country, Malta. I will be your special reporter, giving you information about thing like specialisation training and remote studying. My name is Suvi – here we go! Before even starting as an international business student, my plan and goal was to move to Malta after graduating. I also knew that I wanted to speed up my studies, since when I started my studies I was already 31 years old and a mother, so I didn’t want to “waste” my time but graduate as fast as possible. During my first year in XAMK I took both first and second year courses and spent all day and every day from 8:00 to 15:30 at the campus. I took part in the lectures and then the spare time I was writing reports and completing home assignments in the lovely library of Kouvola campus. Since I had already a vast experience of customer service and working life, I didn’t have to do the first training period at all, which was helping me a lot in my pursuit to graduate quickly. For my degree I needed a specialisation training and I wanted to do it in Malta. My original plan was to come here for the summer (4 months in total) and then, after the training period was over, return to Finland and to Kouvola to finish my studies. However, things did not turn out like that! My story is a perfect proof of the fact that even though one has everything sorted and planned, life surprises and messes up the plans. This time life messed up my plans perfectly! In the upcoming issues of Insider I will explain more about applying for the training positions as well as the recruitment process itself. I will also go through what you need to take into consideration when having your specialisation training abroad, and since I am staying in Malta and not returning to Finland, I’ll finish my studies remotely, so that will be discussed too. Also, I’ll tell you about my everyday life, so stay tuned! Suvi Karell

KRISTINA KASTELAN Guest lecturer Kristina Kastelan is from the University of Rijeka Faculty of Economics in Croatia.

ristina has been teaching in the university since 2003 and that’s around 14-years. Kristina’s hobbies are skiing, scooper diving and anything that is connected with the sea. She has also been scooper diving instructor last summer. Do you have any favour Finnish dish or have you tried any Finnish food? Well, I prepared salmon yesterday in the oven and It turned out quite good. Also I tried a reindeer meat 2 days ago. I was quite surprised. I did not know what to expect but it tasted a little bit like a liver but it was okay. It was nice to try but I will keep the salmon. What countries have you visited? Well, mostly I have been in brazil since I was born in there. Also I have visited most of south America, USA, Sweden, Austria, Russia, Turkey, Italy and Finland now. If you would like to visit country where would you like to go? I would love to go to Spain and Portugal.
What are your 3 best life skills? My three best life skills are adaptable, communicative and open minded. I would say that I have never thought about it but I believe this makes people progress if you have these 3 qualities.
What advice would you give to the students that are interested to go to Croatia for the exchange program? I would advise them to enjoy, to have fun and to see as much as they can because there is a lot to see and do in Croatia. Also I would advise them to take their courses seriously in their study period. And if you are thinking to do the exchange program than I would recommend you to come to Croatia. Hafsa Farah

he movie “It” is based on a Stephen King’s horror novel of the same name. The story begins with Children starting to disappear in a little town called Derry. The streets are filled with rumours about a killer clown called Pennywise (acted by Bill Skarsgård). Group of kids (acted by: Jaeden Lieberher, Jeremy Ray Taylor, Sophia Lillis, Finn Wolfhard, Chosen Jacobs, Wyatt Oleff and Jack Dylan Grazer) take on a mission that leads them deep into the sewers of Derry to reveal the mystery behind the missing children. The movie is directed by Andy Muscietti, and has been one of the most highly viewed movies in theatres at the moment. “It” had its premiere in Sep 8, 2017. Movie captures the eighties essence well. It is made with a hint of eighties moviemaking style to it, and the acting is implemented in a very good level. Wanted suspense was well created with music, that was composed by Benjamin Wallfisch. Atmosphere thorought the movie isn’t as scary and distressing, as I had anticipated. The movie allows the viewer brakes from being distressed, by adding humour and glimpses into 13-year old kids’ lives and problems. “It” as a movie falls into the milder side of horror. I hardly think that it is going to leave anyone traumatized, and it fits in with the people who usually don’t feel comfortable to see horror films in theatres. This movie to me is entertaining and worth your while to see.
