YOUTUBE AS A CAREER PART 2

Moi, it’s me again with another YouTube rambling session. Last time we have tackled some of the reasons why lots of people chose to talk to a camera, instead of real humans, as a career. If you aspire to be one of those, please keep reading to gather some of my amateur but, hopefully, helpful tips. The first thing you need to know is you would not get recognized right away, unless you made a super weird/ controversial/trendy type of video, which gets viral overnight; then it’s a different story. But if want to go steady and have a long-term success, try to make videos that you are genuine about, with a proper script (or if improvisation is your thing then go for it!) and not necessarily professional, but decent filming equipment & editing software. To break it down, these are the most important things you need to sort out before you begin to make videos: genre, video style, target viewers and general knowledge about the topics you choose. 1.Genre: find what your passion is. It could be comedy sketches, vlogging, gameplays, beauty,..etc. The first step is to do what you love, not what’s trending. That way, your videos will be more sincere and “you”. Try to learn from YouTubers who have the same videos genre. Of course, if you prefer to do a little bit of everything, no one can stop you. 2.Video style: every genre requires a different style that could make people want to watch more, or click away after the first 5 seconds. It doesn’t have to be a 1080p video with expensive lighting and a bunch of background music. Most creators started out very humbly and they still got hundreds of thousands of views. That being said, a badly filmed video with jump-cuts every 5s is not good either. You can use natural lighting, free editing softwares and your phones to create an awesome video. Remember: it’s all in the content. 3.Target viewers: This is where you decide what your viewer demographics will be. For instance, if English is not your first language, you can either choose to make videos in your own language or in English in order to reach more audiences. Will your channel be PG? Will you discuss current affairs? Will you create a character or be yourself? These are some questions to get you going. 4.Knowledge: I have seen lots of people on YouTube who unintentionally/intentionally ignore this specific step when making videos, although it is common sense. In order to discuss certain matters, you MUST have a fair amount of knowledge about what you give out to your viewers. You don’t see a chef teach kids about the bird and the bee, or a swimming lesson from a mime in real life. Only talk about things that you know about. Of course if it’s for comedic effects, do whatever you want as long as it’s not offensive. But if you are going to educate people, make sure all the information you got is correct. Then you can worry about how to make it eye-catching and stuff later. So there you go, as brief as I could do, a guide-ish for your future career. If after reading my article, you decided to try it out, please let me know how it goes! It’d be awesome. And of course, even if you do not consider starting a career on a website that is filled with cat videos, thank you for making it to the end anyway. Trang Le

PROFILE

KEHAN CHEN Kehan Chen, a Chinese student in game design, it is his first year in Xamk.

Why do you choose Finland to study game design? Finland is pretty much a country of game design. There is a game called Clash of Clans, it is designed by a Finnish game company. This game is really famous around the world. Another one is Angry Birds which is also from Finland. Actually in 2014 I wanted to come to Finland studying but my visa was rejected that time which was a pity for me. Plus the tuition fee here is lower than other countries like Britain and USA. What do you think of the learning environment in your group? Much better than I have imagined. I was thinking students here might not under too much pressure so they could be kind of lazy, but it is

quite the opposite. I mean everyone in my class is really concentrating and the quality of assignments are usually high. Many of them have attended to art schools before so they are great at drawing.

SOUTH PARK:

THE FRACTURED BUT WHOLE

Great news for all South Park fans, the newest South Park game is here! The newest game is sequel for "South Park: The Stick of Truth"(2014). The "South Park: The Fractured but whole" was released on October 17. by Ubisoft. The game begins with designing a new kid for South Park, which you will be controlling in the game. The story begins where the "South Park: The Stick of Truth" ended. The kids of South Park aren't into playing Game of Thrones anymore, as they were in the first game. In this game, playing superhero is now the coolest thing amongst South Park kids to do. You start the gameplay by heading to the Coon's (also commonly known as Eric Cartman) headquarters to choose what type of superhero you are going to be. There you will start your "Coonstagram" account as well, in which you will be adding pictures in order to get likes and become a famous superhero in the social media. Gameplay is quite simple and amusing. You browse around the South Park surroundings meeting the characters familiar from the show. There are loads of references from the TV series, which are always fun to notice and point out. Game involves loads of looting around the South Park's resident's homes to find new items and getting tasks to do for the residents, in order to gain more followers in "Coonstagram" or in other ways help your superhero career. The overall style of the game and sense of humour is very loyal to the original South Park TV show. So, if you are a South Park fan and enjoy watching it on TV you are surely going to enjoy playing this game. Not recommended for the ones that are easily offended. The game was released for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and for Microsoft Windows. Lotta Lehtinen

EXCHANGE VIEW

A WEEK OF A CONTENT WRITER I am obviously telling about the week of a content writer in iGaming industry, which probably is a lot different from other content writers. At least the main topic is, since in my field we write about online casinos: games, casino reviews, news, articles, blog posts and such. The company I was having my internship in – surprise, I am not in that company anymore, though I had a fulltime job there, ooops – had a quite clear structure on how things were done during the week. On Mondays I would write news for various different affiliate sites. News in this context meant that I wrote about different offerings and campaigns that online casinos were having during that particular week or month. I had multiple sites I was responsible for, which meant that the pace for writing needed to be quite fast. After only a couple of weeks I really got the hang of it and started to write daily more than was required: I love writing, so it was easy for me to reach the word count. In fact, I ended up being the most productive writer from all teams: I beat Norway, Spain, UK, Russia and SWEDEN. Finns get it, Finns know why it was so great! Anyhugh (can you see that I play with words for a living), the content that I created needed to be at least two things: user-friendly and include well-implemented SEO – search engine optimization. A tip for all of you that are interested in content marketing: study SEO. You can actually study it on your own and I highly recommend it, it is a very important part of everyday work of a content writer. On Tuedays, Wednesdays and Thursdays I wrote casino reviews, articles and sometimes about sports with betting tips. On Fridays it was however my time to shine: our company had also multiple blog sites that were dealing with very random topics. This was nice, since I got to be creative and also I needed to have research on many different things. I loved it! But, I didn’t love it all enough. To be continued…. Suvi Karell

BIOAIKA

MEET OUR SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

And it is placed inside a truck! Since a mid-June Bioaika project has been on tour in Finland. Insider visited this exhibition in Mikkeli and founded out that bioeconomy has never been so fascinating. Bioaika (or Bio Era in English) is an exhibition on wheels, which shows the present and the future of bioeconomy in the forestry sector. Sounds boring, but don’t let the first impression frighten you off. Firstly, Bioaika is not a conventional expo at least because it is placed inside a huge truck! Secondly, Bioaika uses the concept of educational entertainment, and it means that the truck is full of interactive stands, buttons, levers, and controllers, which you can push or turn to learn about climate change or carbon cycle. Also, there is a corner with VR glasses, showing a work of harvester from his cabin. Moreover, there is a stand of products made from timber.

An exhibition is full of interactive stands. Items are really inspiring (not only for environmental students). The broad application of wood varies from nanocellulose to a regular t-shirt. And that’s not all. The expo is changing throughout the journey. Latest innovations are added on the way. The aim of the project is to attract the attention of young people to global problems. And also, to give them a solution. Piritta Marttila, an inspirer of the project, says she will regard the project as successful if at least one of the young visitors will choose to work in the forestry sector in future. Bioaika is the unique exhibition. Piritta Marttila claims, that there is no similar project in the world. The producers of the event tour are Metsähallitus Science Centre Pilke in cooperation with Science Centre Tietomaa and forest sector actors. The project will last until December. To visit this exclusive event, check the schedule on official website www.bioaika.fi

Thor : Ragnarok is the latest movie produced by Marvel Studios based on Thor, one of the many superheroes that has been taking our attention for years now. The movie starts with a scene of Thor being imprisoned by the fire demon Surtur(two years after the Battle of Sokovia). Surtur explains to him that Odin, his father, is no longer on Asgard and that the realm will soon be destroyed in the prophesied Ragnarok once Surtur takes the crown with the Eternal Flame. Thor defeats Surtur thinking that he prevented Ragnarok. He then returns to Asgard finding his adopted brother Loki posing as Odin. The both of them go to find Odin and are able to find him located in Norway with the help of Stephen Strange. When they meet with Odin he starts to explain about his firsborn daughter, that no one really knew about, and how she will be escaping from a prison he put her a long time ago, when he passed. After Odin is gone Hela, their evel sister, fights them and during the fight she destroys Thor’s hammer and sends them into space. Thor and Loki crash-land on a planet named Sakaar where a bounty haunter Scrapper 142 takes him with her. Thor then is forced to fight as a gladiator with Hulk, his old friend. After the fight Thor escapes the planet to go and save Asgard. Later on 142 and Hulk joins Thor to help him save Asgard. In the last scene we see 142 and Hulk fighting the resurrected warriors, then we have Loki and the gladiators helping the citizens and Thor facing Hela. While fighting Hela, Thor loses an eye and has a vision of Odin helping him to defeat Hela. He then takes Surtur’s crown and places it in the Enternal Flame. Surtur is reborn and kills Hela and destroys Asgard as well. Thor and the others escape from Asgard. Thor, who is crowned king, takes his people to earth. I found the movie really exciting and funny. The side effects were really impressive and so were the new characters. We get to see Thor in a new look, getting rid of the long hair and also another part of him that we’ve never seen before, a Thor without his hammer. I would recommand this movie, especially for Marvel Studios fans.

OATMEAL PANCAKE

How to make it: - First weight flour into a dry measuring cup, make sure you don’t put too much flour. Combine raspberry oatmeal, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon and salt. I personally added a bit more cinnamon than recommended, because I love the taste of it. - Once all the dry ingredients are combined and mixed well, combine buttermilk, melted butter and egg in different bowl. Mix this with the flour mixture, stirring until moist. - Once all the ingredients are mixed, heat a non-stick pan (preferably a griddle, if you have one). Add a little bit of butter to the heated pan. - Spoon about 2,5 tablespoons of batter onto the pan. Turn pancakes over when tops are covered with bubbles, and cook until bottoms are lightly browned. - Once the pancakes were ready, for extra taste I added whipped cream and chocolate chips. Another and perhaps healthier alternative is jam. - Enjoy ! Setareh Nourzad Abkenar

Ingredients: - 0,5 dl flour - 1,5 dl raspberry oatmeal (you can also use normal oatmeal, I personally prefer this one) - 1 tablespoon sugar - 0,5 teaspoon baking powder - 0,5 teaspoon baking soda - A pinch of cinnamon & salt - 1 dl buttermilk - 2 tablespoons of melted butter - 1 large egg
