Autumn, Welcome! I have realized that I am probably one of the rare ones who enjoys the early signs of autumn. The drop of temperature and falling leaves, the beautiful colours of autumn, the smell of warm coffee and comfortable fluffy socks… And of course, the best part of autumn is when we turn back the clock. Yay for that! For Finns autumn is a time for silence, time for

hiking in colourful surroundings. It’s a time to step back and calm down and wait for the winter to arrive. Also the amazing Finnish nature is at its best during this time with all different kind of mushrooms. So if you feel like gathering your own food, go to the forest and experience it. In this issue we will help you overcome the “fear” of autumn with the rec-

ipe for delicious vegetable puree soup made by Suvi, and if you don’t feel like cooking, you can visit Ravintola Paja, which Lan will introduce to you. So grab yourself a cup of coffee, and enjoy this week’s Insider issue.

REPOVESI NATIONAL PARK

Photos by Julia Felizitas Weyrauch & AnnaPaola Vacanti Text by Julia Felizitas Weyrauch It was a cool and cloudy Saturday morning in Kouvola in the middle of September when thirty exchange students and a handful of tutors packed their backpacks for the Repovesi National Park. Equipped with jackknifes, meat and warm clothes we were ready to face the merciless Finnish wilderness. Ulf, our fearless scoutmaster, handed over some maps of the Ketunlenkki (fox trail) and told us about the joys and dangers, which were waiting for us. Arriving at the national park, we were left with two options: Walking into the Northern direction and crossing the hanging bridge first or walking into the Southern direction to cross the lake with the Fox’s Ferry. The group split up and we decided to take the trail down to the ferry. Here a maximum of ten people per crossing were allowed and the strongest members of our group had to hand-operate the ferry. Afterwards we were hiking through the forest alongside the shore of Kapiavesi and ragged walls of rock. Particularly walking off-road into 4

the forest, while looking for mushrooms, and enjoying the roughness of the seemingly untouched nature raised the feeling that Moominvalley was just behind the next hill.

nally arrived at the hanging bridge. A distance of ten meters between each person was required and the shaking of the bridge made it a real adventure, at least for the students with a fear of heights.

After a while we arrived at the first camp site, where most of the exchange students took a small break and barbecued on the campfire. Others started to climb on the Katajavuori and were rewarded by a magnificent view over the national park, its lakes and the endless amounts of green and yellow treetops. Following a steep descent over wooden steps, we fi-

We met other exchange students at the meeting point and, since we had some time left, we decided to relax at the shore, before the bus driver took us back to Kouvola. Hereby we would like to thank Ulf again, for the organization of the trip, the information and the food and candies provided. It’s been an adventurous and pleasant experience for all of us. 

THE JOURNEY TO VALENCIA

By Khue Do It took me 10 hours to go to Valencia from Helsinki. The transit time in Schiphol airport, Amsterdam was 5-hour long. 5 hours is more than enough for me to change from being excited to emotional and repeat. I am excited because I will have nearly one year to discover a total strange country and its neighbor countries as well. I am excited because I think I can make new friends from different nationalities there, in Valencia. And I am excited because I have been always craving for changes in my life. The idea of experiencing a new foreign city, its cuisine and even culture shock just keeps me excited. However, there will be moment when each of us come back and ask ourselves: “Is it worth it to go the whole way and start a brand new life in a place which you have never been just in order to experience the changes?” or something like “What if I will be super depressed because nobody is going to be my friend and it turns out I will be a desperate lonely human being for the wholeyear long?” Only time can answer these questions. The first Spanish person I met in Valencia is a lady in the metro ticket counter. She doesn’t really speak English so I did use body language and all of my facial expressions to communicate with her. We were quite noisy and funny. The place where I stay is near university so on the way from the metro station to my apartment, most of the people I see on the street are students. They either are carrying bags from the supermarket or their backpacks with books and laptops. Day 1 in conclusion, Valencia in me is hectic, friendly and full of students which half of them are Erasmus students. “This year is going to be fun” – I was talking to myself.  5

RAVINTOLA PAJA Attention! We have a new restaurant! By Lan Le I don’t know if any of you have notice this but the new restaurant was opened on 15.8 and located inside the Paja building, where there used to be the Amica Restaurant. The new restaurant – Ravintola Paja - is owned and run completely by our South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences. The restaurant is opened to serve students, staffs and guests from 8 in the morning until 6 in the afternoon from Monday to Thursday and on Friday, it will be opened until 2.30 in the afternoon. In Ravintola Paja, you can find for yourself good breakfast and lunch with quite a wide range of choices. For example, bread or bun with coffee to start your day fresh and a light lunch with healthy salad and soup. You can find daily updated menu for Ravintola Paja on kasarmiravintolat.fi/. On this site, the restaurant staff will also include a super-detailed description of the ingredients and nutrition fact of the dishes so that you can make your choice of food before you come to the restaurant. In this way, you can save your time queuing. There is also another innovation that can save your time queuing during Lunch. Ravintola Paja are going to introduce a rechargeable debit card as a new means of payment at Kasarminmäki campus. This card will not only speed up the queuing time but will also give the user € 0.10 discount. I am so looking forward to the launch of this new service! Aside from this, student discount with a valid student card is also available.  6

Interview with 5 Students about Ravintola Paja Do you notice that we have a new restaurant?

Giao: I usually have lunch at Paja building. From the beginning of this semester, I have seen significant changes at the restaurant there. However, I had not acknowledged of the novelty that, there was a new restaurant, until I checked my account transactions. Instead of Fazer Food Services Oy, the company that I paid for was Mikkelin Ammattikorkeakoulu. This mean we are served by another system of restaurant- we may expect many differences in both food and services. Jean: Yes. We were informed about the change in Paja restaurant. I know that the service now is provided by students doing Hospitality degree. I think this is a positive change at our university. I like the idea that students create something for students. And, Paja is such a great place for practical training for Hospitality students because it’s a safe campus so if the students make mistakes they can correct them all, which students will never have chance to take in real case. In addition, this news would contribute to promote our KYAMK images in terms of education. Then, KYAMK is a totake-consideration-on place for studying Hospitality in Finland. Not bad, right? Setareh: I actually didn’t notice that we have a new restaurant before I went there for lunch, I thought it’s the same old restaurant but it had changed alot. Meri: I do, but it is still a bit confusing. Many of my friend don’t know about it. Bella: Yes, I was informed about this new restaurant in our campus at the beginning of the year. I was very excited to give it a try and now I’ve finally had my own experience.

Can you feel any difference in the service and the food? Are they better or not?

Giao: The first glance provided me with an impression of structural renovations: the salad-buffet table is pushed farther away from the cashier, tables and chairs are rearranged, there is a monitor to display menu,... Those create a customer-friendly environment, which is, spacious, pleasant and convenient. I am quite satisfied with the menu. Salads for appetizers. Soups and breads with butter for main courses. Cakes or cream for desserts and 2 cups of drinks. The restaurant gives me choices of a healthy lunch. Serving as a cafeteria, the restaurant offers tea, coffee and cakes, snacks, candies... However, the choices of food are seemingly less various. In retrospect, I see that until now, the restaurant comes up to my expectations. Jean: It is hard to compare the service and the food now to them in the past. However, the new vibes from the structures probably urges me to go to Paja more. Last time when I was there, I saw many kinds of sandwiches and breads as well as salad. I rely on the freshness from healthy food there. It is optimized to fit my eating diary.

Do you know about the up-coming rechargeable debit card service? Have you ever used the same service before? Giao: I have heard from my friends about this imminent service. The debit card will possibly fasten payment process. I am waiting for a payment method that is simple but still secure. Whenever I purchase my lunch, I have to show my student card and use bank card/cash to pay. The new debit card may combine both these two, and is easier to be held in hand. The same service that I have used is applied for public transport systems in Helsinki. With HSL card, I can pay for my out-of-zone trips, easier, faster and cheaper. From this experience, I look forward to a similar benefit that I can receive with rechargeable debit card in Paja restaurant. Jean: Yes. I think it’s worth trying. The only reason is about its convenience. Imagine that you do not have to take more time typing your pin code but transferring payment rapidly. So that you won’t feel that you are the one to make the people line wait for so long anymore. Honestly, I have not used this service previously. Thus, I am looking forward to it.

Meri: The soup are not very creative. There are differences in the service and the food and some of them are better, some are not.

Setareh: I heard about the rechargeable debit card, its a very good idea, but on the other hand, it doesn’t change anything for me, because I pay with my credit card everytime so if I get this rechargeable card, nothing will change for me, except that I have to transfer money into the card once in a while and that would be just an extra work... So I don’t think I will be using it...

Bella: I can tell the menu is more diverse compares to last year. We have more options regarding main courses unlike before when salad and vegetable took the dominant, which is a good news for me personally.

Bella: I’ve just heard about it lately and yes I’ve used this kind of service before. And I think it’s convenient since I don’t need to have money with me all the time but can still use the service on daily basis.

Setareh: I personally don’t like it at all, I already had a very bad experience with the food so I don’t think I will be going there for lunch anytime soon.

veggie purée soup Since it’s autumn and the weather is getting colder and colder (and colder and colder), we are having nice, warming soup! It is now served as a main course, but of course you can serve it as a starter as well. By Suvi Karell What you need:

What to do:

• • • • • • • • • • • •

1. First peal the vegetables, then cut

8

1 big sweet potato 5 carrots 2 sweet peppers 1 big onion 2 chilis (medium hot) 1-2 cloves of garlic fresh ginger 1 vegetable bouillon cube water a can of coconut milk hand blender/ blender (pulled pork / minced meat / chicken / cottage cheese)

them into small pieces. It doesn’t matter which size, because in the end everything is going to the blender. 2. Put all the veggies into a saucepan and then add water; just enough to cover them. Add the bouillon cube. 3. Cook for 15 to 20 minutes, then pour half of the water of and get your blender ready. 4. Now carefully blend everything, then add the coconut milk (half of the can) and cook for a minute or two.

If you want to have also protein in the soup: First prepare the protein of your choice and simply just add it once the soup is already in the plate. This way you can have variability. And of course you don’t have to add anything if you don’t want to; the soup is delicious just by itself.

Bon Apetit!

Terry Pratchett 1948-2015 Sir Terence Pratchett was an English fantasy author, knighted in 2008. Mainly known for his Discworld series, Pratchett wrote over 70 books in his career.

good omens Text by Roope Sorvo

Neil Gaiman *1960 He is an English author based in Wisconsin, USA. Originally the writer of the comic book Sandman, Gaiman is also known for novels such as Stardust, Coraline, and American Gods.

The end of the world is coming. All the ill omens of the end times are visible in our everyday lives. The Four Horsemen of Apocalypse are summoned to ride and are ready bring destruction to the world. However, a slight mishap causes the events to divert from the script: the Antichrist (or ‘The Adversary, Destroyer of Kings, Angel of the Bottomless Pit, Great Beast that is called Dragon, Prince of This World, Father of Lies, Spawn of Satan, and Lord of Darkness’, as he’s constantly referred as) gets accidentally switched at birth. So instead of the cult of satanists the child grows up in a perfectly normal family in the British suburbia. And not everyone is on board with the divine plan to begin with: Angel named Aziraphale and demon called Crowley have both grown accustomed to the comforts of the modern world, and form an alliance in order to find the misplaced Antichrist and stop the End of Times. Co-written by Neil Gaiman and Discworld author Terry Pratchett, Good Omens is essentially the two

authors’ fanfiction of the Book of Revelations, with bits of The Omen thrown in. Also, given the merit list of its authors, it is no surprise that it is also an absolute blast. Typical to the signature styles of the authors, the book is full of very Pratchettian amusing characters and keen cultural observations, while Gaiman contributes interesting concepts and otherworldly wonder, sprinkled with occasional fragments of disturbing demonic horror. The texts of the two authors are seamlessly woven together, and despite their trademark characteristics it’s impossible to say which author penned which part. Originally released in 1990, some of the jokes have gotten slightly dated; the whole running gag about car stereos and Best of Queen cassette tapes worked a lot better in the early 90s. It is also very, very British: the comedy is often very dry, and all the references of M25 Motorway being the work of the devil might not be as funny to the readers on this side of the English channel. Despite this, Good Omens is thoroughly enjoyable read and difficult to put down until you’ve made it all the way to the end, be that of the book or the world.  9

Text by: Grayson L. Heflin Relax your body but let your mind traverse the stratosphere. Imagine floating belly up in the ocean during a pitch black night, with only the stars to illuminate the canvas. These points of light alternate colours: from crimson to chartreuse, from magenta to mahogany, and from amber to azure. You are at peace being in the middle of nowhere, yet drowning is only a matter of turning over. Take a deep breath and let the water guide you along this journey. Describing Cubicolor’s debut album Brainsugar is simply complex. The trio hails from Amsterdam bringing in a new wave of deep house. The songs are similar enough to be a concept album but enough to wear out their welcome. Drum beats involve heavy 10

bass bumping suitable for a club, with some classic jazz elements. Soft guitar work, intricate strings, monumental piano chords, and utterly haunting vocals. Elements of Radiohead are not too far off. The cadence of the lead singer and the general tone of the album might remind you of In Rainbows. Brainsugar explores the depths of sorrow and emptiness. Synths are generally of the higher frequencies to make ample space for the atmospheric lower-end. Sounds pan from ear to ear, expressing movement. The instrumental title track, starts off with a range of crinkling, snapping, bouncing, and glitched sound effects, then moves to a deep bass sweep with the weight of an ocean. The light distant keys add a cherry on top. Towards the middle of the album the bass starts to feel like that lump in the back of your throat when you hear the sad news. Your closest

friend was just in a terrible accident and the last words you said to her was “I hate you!” But you don’t hate her. You were just having a fight and she drove off into the night. You love her. The percussion and innocent music box sounds build up and you remember all the good times you had together. Tears come to your eyes. Then reality hits you – the memories fade through a low-pass filter. It’s over, you’re too late. It may only be a debut, but Cubicolor is already off to a great start! The album maintains momentum throughout the 12 song track list and will only take up an hour of your time. Multiple listens are recommended however, to fully digest the contents. Save up your change from those daily cups of coffee and pick up a copy of this album. Take a long car ride or a midnight run, bump up the volume, and let it melt your eardrums into psychedelic ooze. 

Text by Sarah Rosenthal Bridget’s focus on single life and her career is interrupted when she finds herself pregnant, but with one hitch... she can only be fifty percent sure of the identity of her baby’s father. Presented as a comedy, the third in a highly successful franchise, Bridget Jones’s Diary, exerts a profoundly different reaction. What we are introduced to is the life of the protagonist (Renee Zellweger) that is totally devoid of any real meaning. She spends her work days in some trashy media outlet and is forced to mouth platitudes so as to satisfy her boss, while her leisure hours are spent in desperate attempts to get laid with colleagues whose sole idea of “a good time” is to indulge in relentless innuendo and enjoy the prospect of future shags. In true British cliché motion, no one, it seems, has either the courage or the strength of mind to admit their true feelings. Zellweger’s performance as Bridget comes across as someone profoundly short on self-confidence. She utters witty voice-overs to the viewers as she types her diary, but we understood fairly early on into the movie that they are evasions, a way of refusing to tell

the truth to herself. It is this fault that leads her into the film’s central dilemma; the need to find out who the father of her baby actually is - Mark Darcy (Colin Firth), or smooth American millionaire rival (Patrick Dempsey), a task for which she feels both emotionally and temperamentally unsuited.. Yet we can understand her feelings, when the two men in her life who seem so profoundly self-interested forget their insincere protestations of love; their real aim in life is to satisfy their self-interest. Mark oscillates between Bridget and his wife Candida (whom we see fleetingly); when it suits his purposes, he tosses Camilla aside in favor of Bridget. Meanwhile his rival seems more interested in sustaining his self-image as a “caring” American (as opposed to the indifferent Brit) rather than really understanding Bridget’s complex emotions.

Watch Trailer

The film contains an array of sexist and homophobic stereotypes guaranteed to offend anyone, from Bridget’s mother’s (Gemma Jones’s) house-party with a token guestlist of those embracing alternative lifestyles, to the profoundly depressing sight of Bridget being dropped like a piece of meat into the hospital, immediately before her labour is due to start. Questions of human dignity and female well-being are left aside: Bridget is no more than a commodity to her so-called suitors. The overall impression left by the film is of an indifferent London, a place where no one really cares for anyone else, where hedonism and superficiality reign supreme, and where single women have little or nothing to look forward to in their lives. It seems a suitably depressive release for the post-Brexit era. Musically the movie is topped of with the most plain playlist your mother could possibly find on Spotify. And that, I suppose was the target group all along, mothers and middle-aged women and with all the oestrogen flooding the cinema you are sure to leave at least one cup size larger.  11
