StartUp Passion THE KEY TO SUCCESS

StartUp Passion in Baltic Sea Region is an international project to promote entrepreneurship among students and give them an opportunity of a lifetime to create and design their own future. We support those talented and innovative students with all necessary tools they need, to bring their own business idea further, to help them with the development, mentor them and let them do what they love. We are not only operating here in Finland we are also active together with Tallinn University and Stockholm School of Economics in Riga (Latvia). This means, also YOU can create a so called cross-border team and your business idea is from beginning on already ready for the international market.

The first 4 events are already done and the experience shows that there are plenty of potential teams which have the possibility now to go to the competition and 1

win € 5000.00, with this money they can choose which startup convention they want to visit in Europe or even in the U.S. Starting a startup business is not easy, it is hard work and it also needs commitment. But if you have a great idea and you are motivated to bring it further – WHY NOT? We have only 6 steps to success – may sound easy – but as I said it is hard work, BUT it pays off. It starts with a Hackathon (48h challenge to create an idea out of a certain secret topic), a great opportunity to join a team and work together, and create something amazing. Our next event was a 3-days KickOff in Tallinn were we met our coaches and also we could explore the beautiful city of Tallinn together with our local friends from Tallinn University.

working together with Courage Ventures team, those are e.g. Will Cardwell, he is also a lecturer on entrepreneurship and venture capital topics at Aalto University, as well as a mentor in several accelerators, including Startup Sauna and Fabian Sepulveda, he is a startup coach and lean Launchpad trainer with lots of passion for Customer Development and young entrepreneurial mindset people. And of course there is Laura and Povilas with are also great coaches when it comes on entrepreneurship and startups. Just to mention some of our coaches, but there are also those from Tallinn like Harri Tallinn and Grete Gutmann form Civitta. With this amazing coaches and their full support, it is a fun experience to work on your idea. They give you, their full support and also connect you with people you need for your project.

During the summer we had our 5-days Bootcamp in Finland and we stayed at the beautiful location of Santalahti in Kotka, plus we had the great opportunity to have our camp at Merikeskus Vellamo an awesome and impressive building in the middle of Kotka centrum. 5-days of hard work payed off and now we start with the competition on September 16th in Tallinn.

We enjoyed every minute of this amazing program and it is an opportunity of a lifetime – there is only one simple step to do – find time and apply to our first upcoming event next year in beginning of March (8.3. – 10.3.2017) in RIGA. Who are you?

I am the startup guy, the main organizer for *ship – The Startup Festival -event, student in Master of Business Administration; International Business Management, Kyamk graduate from Batchelor of Art; Product design and Communication, project manager at Kymenlaakso University of Applied Sciences, startup culture developer in Kymenlaakso region, startup evangelist, founder for PatteriES, advisor in PatteriES, laid back person who enjoys nature and hanging at cottage, but on the other had gets kicks out of extreme sports and activities. My girlfriend would probably say that I am the guy who is never home, my friends would most likely say I am the guy who is always busy and I would say that I am an entrepreneur and loving every minute.

Who is your sidekick or party buddy?

At the moment my main priority is on *ship and there my sidekick is Ms. Momal Mushtaq. With her we are equally responsible that shi* happens. All PatteriES members are my sidekicks and party buddies and we do several things and events together.

During my time working in PatteriES I have gained several friends and even though we don’t do that much work related stuff together anymore, those people are my party buddies. Work hard play hard, has been our motto for several years! 

What is the best thing you have learnt this year?

Give all, believe in good people, hustle your ass off and great things happen. This year I have seen *ship grow from an idea to a noteworthy startup event. Everything takes time when you build any kind of enterprise, but for me this year actually showed how it happens. This gives me a huge hope that whatever you do and if you do your best and people around you supports what you do, that in time it will grow in to something greater.

with the idea: “Since Kotka is located by the sea, why don’t we do an entrepreneur-SHIP. An actual cruise ship that we would pack full of investors and startups and sail them to the sea and not let them out before all the ideas has got an investment.” This is how everything started. Always.

Next years Startup Summer Camp will be organized by someone else. I feel that the organizer should be as hungry as I was when I made the first SSC in 2014.

What is the best thing about being part of the SSC/*ship?

In *ship, even though I am the main organizer, I feel that I am part of something greater than myself. This is taking me to places where I meet absolutely awesome people and I get to express myself in so many ways. I learn new things from others all the time and I get to experience entrepreneurship.

In Startup Summer Camp I have been involved for three years now. First year I was taking part as a team and also organized it. This is great because I did it also because I needed it. This year I was mainly as one of the couches in the beginning. But what is the best thing about SSC is the people and the relationships we have built during the summers. We keep in touch with those people regularly.

How did SSC/*ship come to be?

I was working in Design Factory, in Otaniemi. There I get to know about Venture Garage (now Startup Sauna). These places and the atmosphere got me really excited and inspired. There I got to know of Summer of Startups organized by AaltoES. I had a friend taking part to that program and I get to understand that basically anybody can create a business of their dreams if you really want it, this was summer 2012. So, by witnessing this I felt that Kyamk students deserve the same opportunity in our school as well. Then if we fast-forward a little bit, I met Venture Gym from Kotka and we did first SSC in the summer 2014. *ship came to be when there was different organizations in the region struggling with the same question of: how could we lighten up the entrepreneurial spirit in the region. Then this guy Jouni Eho got us all in the same table for a workshop to work on this. There one of *ships mentors came up

What was your favorite thing to do in the summer once everything was over?

Meet friends, travel a bit, relax and drink beer. I only had time to take one week of holidays so didn’t really want to plan too much.

Since you are involved with Startup programs, would you like to be one of the startups in your program getting advice instead of giving it?

In a startup program the meetings are prebooked for you. I am one of the persons to book the people to come to the startup programs. So I know some of these people in advance and I do set up meetings with them myself if I feel like that they could help me or vise verse. And people are all the time booking up meetings where I take part and I get to meet really interesting people who do guide me in both business and personal level, and that is awesome.

I love taking part to SSC as a mentor/ couch. And being part of SSC gives me the opportunity to meet the other wonderful coaches, mentors and participants and share my ideas with them. And that is also great. To actually answer the question: yes.

If you could tell Sabine something, what would it be.

You were one of the biggest influences for me in the first steps of PatteriES. You grew my competitiveness (as a former downhill skier knows best), you made me braver (as you are a person with no fears what so ever), you taught me business (and I design to you as a favor), you injected me with energy every day (with the energy you possess), you taught me negotiation skills (as the tough cookie you are) and you have been a good friend to me.  4

*ship – The Startup Festival is a startup -event that brings together the next generation of entrepreneurs to Kotka.

The participants are mostly students that are taking their first steps towards entrepreneurship. The main idea of the event is to bring the participants together with a network of international mentors. Mentors are angel investors, startup coaches and other experts and startup evangelists.

Participants are mainly coming from student led accelerators as Startup Summer Camp is, which is organized by student led entrepreneurship society KyUAS called PatteriES. Other teams this year came from Helsinki, Turku, Lappeenranta, Russia, Latvia and Germany.

Participants are brought together in several ways and we focus on creating an open atmosphere towards developing ideas. Program consist of mentor program, Founders Cocktails networking event, Mentor Cruise -networking lunch cruise and we also got a seminar for self and business development.

But the main thing why the teams get most exited is the Pitch Captain -competition.

On the competition everyone gets to present their ideas, but the ten best go to the second round to present their ideas in Kotka market square in front of the whole Kotka Maritime Festival crowd (Kotkan Meripäivät).

And on the line for the winner is the grand prize of 5000€.

a ten week intensive program where you get to learn the basics of entrepreneurship as well as the advanced tricks and insights on how to be successful. It is organized every summer by PatteriES in Kotka and/or Kouvola.

You’ll get a work place in an open office with other enthusiastic student entrepreneurs, coaching and mentoring from people who has been there done that, support and guidance to start your business and the hard truth if you should not.

Most of all it is a community of people who support each other and spend a summer of their lives together.

Text: Antti Viitanen, main organizer of *ship – The Startup Festival cally double for the previous event. How is it possible to grow an event, one might ask. And the answer is in well planning and volunteers.

First year we were able to pull off with a really small core team, but this year we really needed the help from extra hand. And because we are planning to grow the event from what it is now, we are going to build an ambassador program for the students, which will give them a great platform to build their networks and gain access to places where they want to get. About this we will announce more lately during this year.

This year we had our core team of ten KyUAS students and 18 volunteers from ten different countries. I think

Other significant partners who made everything possible are Cursor Oy, Kouvola Innovation Oy, City of Kotka and our school KyUAS. We asked the participants to give us an overall rating for their experience at the event and we got amazing 4,4/5. This means that those who took part truly appreciates the event and this of course gives us a huge boost.

One thing about our plans for next year we can already reveal and that is that since Finland is turning 100 years old, to appreciate that we are going to have 100 teams taking part to *ship next year.

This year our main location for SSC2016 was Maritime Center Vellamo in Kotka. The first week was spend in Palvaanjärvi Bootcamp, where the participants get to know each other in a relaxing atmosphere in a middle of forest and by a lake and they go through an intensive training program where they get the basics for business development and pitch presentation.

During the summer participants meet people who are entrepreneurs, angel investors and experts on their field to learn from the bests.

I am Sabine Suorsa, or just Sabi. I am the Project Manager of the StartUp Passion in Baltic Sea Region project here at Kyamk soon to be XAMK. I am Austrian and I love my family, Bindi my daughter and Jari my partner in crime/hubby/ex-hockeyplayer/ referee, plus our new family edition Pontus Becks Suorsa (our pubby dog). I very often say in particular to Finns – I am not a Finnish person don´t ask me to act like this – I am Austrian full of passion, energy and sometimes I am a tornado.

Who is your sidekick or party buddy?

What a question J of course it is Kirsi Rouhiainen.

I am really blessed to have her as my sidekick or buddy, she is a true inspiration and I learnt so much form her and I highly 7

appreciate her energy and effort she brings into our project. I am glad to have a great team behind me in this project – makes life as a Project Manager way easier. But also the rest of my Starpabs team are just so important to me, like Ari Lindeman, Marianne Roslund, Niina Salmi, Jori Pölkki and Suvi Pylvänen. Of course I am also happy to have Heidi Sjörgren from Cursor as my sidekick, she is a huge help and a great partner. Me, Kirsi and Heidi are also called “The Butterfly Butchers” J What is the best thing you have learnt this year?

There is a huge list and all of them are great. I guess the cultural differences and their obstacles might be one important thing I learnt. That I should be more AND more open-minded still. I do not see differ-

ences or obstacles as something negative – I face them with a positive attitude (at least I try the most of the time).

What is the best thing about being part of the SUP? ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING – every minute I enjoy the fullest. No matter how long or how many hours I am sitting behind my desk, I enjoy every single minute. The personal development and growth each participant is making is so great to see – It makes me so proud of them and at the same time inspires me to give them more and let them experience more.

How did SUP come to be?

Some smart people (not me) had the idea of this awesome project and they worked for a gigantic long time on it to make it happen – I am really happy to be part of it.

How long have you been involved with the program?

I am part of this program (SUP) since last year November. But involved in the startup movement here at Kyamk – I guess it was late 2012 beginning of 2013 when I got the call from Antti J. It was a very funny call, but we catched up and we started to work together, it was from the first minute on the best experience I ever had. Lots of awesome thing happened since that time – like PatteriES – What a story J What was your favorite thing to do in the summer once everything was over?

At first for sure relaxing, spending quality time with family, enjoying the Finnish Summer. It actually have been my very first “holidays” in Finland. I mostly go back home (Austria) to visit my family and friends there.

But of course thinking about the next round of our StartUp Passion – the competition and From Business to Success program which will start in September, all the exciting things which will come up in the new academic year. And of course meeting our new talented students from all over the world and get them inspired about entrepreneurship and the startup movement.

Since you are involved with Startup programs, would you like to be one of the startups in your program getting advice instead of giving it?

Oh yes, definitely I would love too. This would be such an awesome experience, going through all the 6 step of our StartUp Passion journey. The amount I would learn – is priceless. Actually we (SUP Team Finland staff) talked about the idea to create our very own startup and join our events as participants. It would be great and as Prof.

Alan Barrell would say “WHY NOT” J If you could tell Antti something, what would it be?

As usual I would have a lot to say to Antti (laughing), but this time I do not know where to start. I would say “THANK YOU” in font size 72 and beyond plus super ballistic BOLD (Insider guys do not make it that big it was just a symbol – but please keep it like this) - for everything. You helped me to understand quite a lot, you let me explore my Design EYE. You are an amazing support throughout all this years and beyond I am grateful. You became a great friend for lifetime. But I guess you helpe me find my path and let me be me - and last but not least KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK. 

Genre Electronic/Classical Crossover Release Date August 19, 2016 Producer Various Rating 3/5 The first time I heard Lindsey Stirling was in early 2012, when I accidentally stumbled upon the music video for her song “Shadows” on YouTube.

It was a cute, simple, very much a small-budget clip of her and her shadow having a dance-off. Since then, she’s gained billions of views on YouTube, her songs have sold millions, and her new album Brave Enough debuted at #5 on the Billboard 200 list. Quite well for a performer who was turned down in America’s Got Talent for being “unmarketable”.

Stirling’s two previous albums mixed together classical strings with electronic music with a limited budget aesthetic similar to her “Shadows” video; most of the heavier electronic sounds and dubstep wubs-wubs sounded plastic and lacked the real punch. The whole thing sounded like it was recorded using the pre-existing samples found from 20-dollar electronic keyboard. For many electronic artists this can be conscious choice, but with Stirling’s symphonic approach the technical limitations were seriously hindering the experience. Now, her third album features so many different producers that listing them would eat the space from the rest of the review. And it can be heard: from production standpoint Brave Enough sounds much better than Stirling’s previous records.

However, when it comes to the material itself, Stirling seems to be at a loss. There is an air of aimlessness to her songwriting, almost like she was working on two different albums simultaneously – one being collection of instrumental violin showcases like “First Light” or “Prism”, the other a collection of violin-flavoured pop tracks featuring guest vocalists – and haphazardly mashed them

together when the deadline caught up with her. The latter category is often where the album falls short: some of the vocal performances tend to shove the violin into the background, while on others Stirling seems to consciously dial back her violin wizardry, resulting in safe and generic pop tracks with some string accompaniment. Fortunately, some of the songs with vocalists work very well, with the vocals and violin supporting instead of undermining one another. The title track keeps the violin in the spotlight, and proves that Christina Perri can provide decent vocals with material that she has not herself provided. “Something Wild”, the album’s grande finale, manages to balance Stirling’s violin, Andrew McMahon’s vocals and piano into a harmonious, equal trinity.

The whole thing is mostly instrumental, lots of sweet af violin noises - you feel?

Despite her evident inexperience with the traditional pop song format, Brave Enough showcases Stirling’s skills as a proficient violinist and an adept composer of instrumental electronic music. Whenever she stays off the standard pop songs, the music flourishes. Maybe it’s the unmarketability.  Text by Roope Sorvo

Finding Dory Above: Octopuss Hank & Dory in the laboratory

The friendly but forgetful blue tang fish by the name of Dory (voiced by Ellen Degeneres) begins a search for her long-lost parents, and everyone learns a few things about the real meaning of family along the way.

This movie came to me, in a day and age where most prequels to popular animated movies are more or less as good as a soggy pickle, that Finding Dory is a really good movie with a great message about disability and mental illness and you should watch it if you can.

Dory is the most accepting Disney character ever. No matter who she meets she is kind and friendly. If someone does something that they get embarrassed about she comforts them and says it’s okay and that everyone does it. She is still one of the nicest and kindest Disney characters there is and doesn’t expect anything in return.

Finding Dory teaches that even if you have what the world sees as a disability you can still do whatever you want to do and that you shouldn’t let what others say about you or to you stop you from following your dreams, or living your life.

The main point for critic is for most people still that Finding Dory lacks the magic from the original movie. But what people don’t understand about Finding Dory and Finding Nemo, there is so much character depth and meaning.

Take Marlin for example. Ever since his wife died he has had a hard time trusting people and having any sort of faith because he used to be hopeful and then the love if his life was just dead. But, as shown when they think what would Dory do, in reality

the only person he doesn’t trust is himself. He feels like he didn’t try hard enough to save Coral from the shark and he takes it out on others and passes it as trust issues. He especially takes it out on Nemo, who also has trouble trusting himself because his whole life his dad has made him feel like he’s not able to do a lot because of his fin.

And then Nemo finds Dory and she trusts him completely and makes him feel useful.

BUT since Nemo is sort of taking care of her it’s obvious that there’s something missing in her life, that’s why there was never much backstory with Dory.

Because of Dorys memory loss she has no recollection of anyone being bad to her; she is essentially stuck in a childhood state for her whole life. That’s why her main goal is always just to do good and not ever hurt anyone, but her innocence sometimes causes her to bring harm to herself, which is why it’s so extremely lucky that she met Marlin who can look out for her. This makes Marlin feel like he’s doing something good after not doing anything when the shark came. When Dory meets Hank she is the only one who is able to see the good side in him, and gives him the only friend he’s ever had. They didn’t give background on Hank because they wanted him to seem a little more like Dory, and you see the juxtaposition of the one who is crippled by memories and the one who is crippled by having no memory. They both have a piece of them that’s a little lost, and they complete each other.

I don’t mean to be to be dramatic but the relationship between Marlin and Dory in both Finding Nemo and Finding Dory is so pure why can’t we have more bonds between two adults of different genders in popular movie? Why can’t adults enjoy friendships this innocent and supportive?

Why can’t we portray the development of platonic affection between adults instead of making them “childhood friends so we assume they have a bond even if you won’t see it lol”? Why can’t we have more nice things like this duo on screen?  Text by Sarah Rosenthal
