In a near future the South African police is becoming more and more mechanised in order to regain control over the ever increasing crime and the war against drugs. But now the people start to fight back. When a robot turned sentient being is being abducted by criminals the company responsible will do everything in their power to remove it from existence. Chappie is certainly not the first robot directors want you to feel sympathetic for but since Wall-E non was pushed onto you as hard as this one. And to be honest that makes it kinda hard to actually do that in the beginning. Nonetheless, it does become easier. And then harder again. It was a proper struggle which I mainly attribute to how the story developed: Okay - Oh my god I don‘t give a shit - Yeah, this could be good, go on - Really? - Really now? Apart from the writing it was nice to see Sigourney Weaver again in this kind of movie. At the same time seeing Hugh Jackman pull of that character, particularly THAT haircut was, equally brilliant and disturbingly hilarious. Also Die Antwoord pulled of a rather solid performance. Not that I am surprised, but they complimented the movie in an odd sort of way. The end of the movie, though. No, thank you. That was lazy and the easy way out and I‘m sure they could have have found a better solution if they had thought about it for more than five minutes. The same thing is true for the character design of Chappie. He looks like a crappy Cylon with bunny ears. And with all their advanced technology they were not able to create something
