MOVIE REVIEW

THE HUNGER GAMES:MOCKINGJAY PART 1 / Director: Francis Lawrence / Genre: Adventure|Sci-Fi / Starring: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson / Rating:

After the 75th annual Hunger Games ended with Katniss, Finnick and Beetee being saved by the rebels from District 13 and Peeta, Johanna and Annie ending up in the hands of the Capitol the first part of the Mockingjay sets the tone for a dystopian futuristic apocalypse waiting to happen. Both fraction fight for superiority over the other mostly by use of propaganda. Just like Catching fire this part of Suzanne Collins trilogy introduces a bunch of new important characters, like the rebel-president Alma Coin, brilliantly portrayed by Julianne Moore, and Cressida (Natalie Dormer), employed by the president to make the propaganda films of Katniss to support the rebel cause. At the same time all of the already introduced characters become more fleshed out, especially up until now under-developed characters like Gale and Katniss’ little sister Primrose (Willow Shields). As visually appealing as this movie is, it is mostly exposition for the big finale coming out sometime next year. While we learn a lot about the characters and the state of Panem as a whole, the trailers were over-selling it just a tad, as they ever so often do. I am not suggesting that you should skip this part, but if you have the patience you might as well wait until next year and go see the double feature which will, I hope, be as spectacular as this movie was made out to be by clever trailer editors.
