ime runs too fast. Already next week everyone will have an evaluation period and after a long time comes awaited holidays. All students will finally have chance and time to discover new cities and countries and get unforgettable expiriences and emotions.

One of the most popular cities among tourists and located closer to us, is St. Petersburg that always waits for new guests.

By the way, last weekend there was a St.Petersburg Fashion Week, which I was lucky enough to visit. Winter is around the corner but it was a time for Russian designers to present their new collection of S/S 2014 season. Pale blue, coral and light pink colors, strict straight lines and oriental motifs in dresses are the main trends in the following season according to Russian vision. And all guests were participants of such a fashion celebration. Nevertheless, you, our readers, are also having a chance to read about Designer Party in our university and will know all about this event.

In the middle of autumn, when the weather is getting cold and more and more rainy, very often you, probably, would like to eat and taste something new and special. Our Vietnamese students have opened the secret of the traditional dish, which can be cooked by everyone and at home.

This year we have many exchange students again and our magazine has already asked them about their first impression of the university and Finland. But we don’t forget about our Kyamk’s students, who also have an exchange program at the moment and in this issue you can read Ekaterina Perfilyeva’s “studying diary” and about her free time in the UK.

In conclusion I’d like to wish you a good mood and a lot of success at the evaluation week. And for your information: it’s time to buy warm clothes, make sure that you provide yourself with nice scarves and gloves and keep hanging out with your friends.

A Russian in England Hello everyone! I am an International Business student at Kyamk currently spending my exchange period in England, at Southampton Solent University. I arrived in England two weeks ago and my actual studies start tomorrow (here we start at the very end of September).

What to begin with…? England is fantastic, of course. One of the things that makes your exchange here easier is the language of course but understanding local accents may be quite challenging sometimes. What is a bit disappointing though, is that local people do not speak many foreign languages but you will surely find people of your nationality – there are loads of students from all over the world living in Southampton and making up a great percentage of the city’s population.

To boast a little bit, it’s still +17C here, the sun is shining and we enjoy the weather. During the two weeks I already spent here, it was raining just once but the weather is changing quickly and unpredictably bringing clouds or a nice breeze from the sea which I can smell in the morning. The sea is not so far away but don’t think the city looks like a beach resort – Southampton is a huge sea port for both cargo and passenger vessels (guess where the Titanic sailed from!).

Though I have been in England for quite a while several years ago, I had culture shocks this time, too. Such as, I couldn’t buy a kitchen knife without my ID. What is England like? Football is sacred (no comments), tea with milk is set as default for ‘tea’, pedestrians cross the road anywhere anytime, cars drive on the right (I think I will get lost even if I ride a bike!), everything is in pounds, pubs are countless, parks are awesome and people are very friendly and polite.

Southampton Solent University has a really friendly environment, lots of staff and services offered. Solent is quite a big university and it has two campuses with our campus located in the very centre of the city within walking distance from basically everything that a student would need. As foreign students (both exchange and degree) we had a separate three days of introduction followed by general introduction to kill us with information overload. There are lots of societies and clubs to join, the university has several excellent sport facilities, a huge library and a student union with a restaurant on campus.

I am studying at the Faculty of Business, Sport and Enterprise (which offers many various courses as seen from the name) and the choice of units offered was very varied so I had to really understand my priorities to choose only six units (each for 10 ECTS) out of more than 70 offered.

Overall, the environment is very energetic here and I look forward to attending my first lecture here tomorrow. I’ll be writing again to Insider to tell you more about studying at Southampton Solent!

For the first time this year Designers from all kinds of fields at Kyamk came together for the Designer Party at Paja.

Since it was a first this year, no one really knew what to expect. When we arrived we were greeted with little candles trailing their way down the staircase and lovely colourful “flower cocktails” on the tables. The whole picture was rounded up by a relaxing lounge-kind of music until the first band started their show.

The Vietnamese trio “Numaneko” started to play at around 19h. The band members Chang, Nad and Scorp, were all wearing fitting cute alice-bands with kitten ears.

They played a number of cover songs such as “Thank you” by Dido and a mix-up of Train’s “Hey, Soul Sister” and Jessie J’s “Price Tag”. The minor technical difficulties did not stop them from delivering an overall good show.

The 2nd musical performance of the evening was Henri Samppala. He especially convinced through his very intense voice and his extraordinary performance skills on the guitar.

Between the chatting and meeting new people and even some dancing, students, especially the exchange students, had a lot of fun playing Beer Pong. One round after another the more or less serious threats between the competing teams became mingled with sounds of exasperation. Though we also witnessed beverages actually increasing peoples aiming skills but that – of course – might just have been luck. A new idea for the next Designer Party Game came up as well – but you might want to take this one outside – Flunky Ball.

The only downside was that the evening was way too short. At 22h we had to leave the location at Paja,

due to the school rules and alarm settings, but students are resourceful and used this enjoyable evening-starter and ventured on to another pub, bar or club.

A big Thank You goes to the organizers Mattea Näveri, Anne Muszynski, Daria Nikulina, Lidia Vorobyeva, Juho Jurvanen, Katariina Rahkola,Maria Vvedenskaya and Miska Karvinen or as many of you know them the Tutors.

They did a great job and we hope this event will in the future become a Kyamk regular.

A short Interview with Mattea Näveri, design tutor:

Who and how came up with the idea for the Designer Party?

Last year there was a designer party organized by students from MU groups and RE department as well. We liked the idea and I suggested to do it again, this time organized by us, the tutors.

Did it match you expectations?

I think it went swimmingly. I can´t say that it was easy and it definitely was not without its problems, however, people did seem to have fun and I personally enjoyed it as well.

Do you have any plans for the next semester/year?

We were thinking about a Christmas designer party, but this is not sure at all. I am also assuming we will do another one of these once the new batch of exchange students arrive.

What things would you like to do different next time?

I´d say technical details. I would have liked the setup untouched and done previously, so we had no static and feedback, as well as locking up the lights once set up. It was too light in the room and prevented people from dancing. Though beer pong was very popular, I think it got in the way of other things. It would be also nice to have some new performers besides the three girls and Henri. It is always interesting to hear new things and promote people as well.

TERACOTTA ARMY What can you get with 5 euros? A cheap top, a pint of beer or a student ticket for terra-cotta-army exhibition in Vapriikki,Tampere! In the show there are five authentic terracotta soldiers, jade and gold objects and some really interesting facts about the history of China.

The figures were discovered in 1974 by a Chinese farmer, who was digging a well near Mount Li in Shaanxi province, China. Instead of water, he found a human head sculpted from clay. Further excavation revealed over 8000 unique soldiers in military formations, dating around 210 BC. The discovery astonished the world and today it is one of the Unesco World Heritage Sites.

The army was manufactured by the command of the first Emperor of China, Quin Shi Huang, who was only 13 years old when he ascended the throne. The Emperor was convinced he was meant to rule the universe and in his lifetime began to build himself a mausoleum, surrounded by terracotta acrobats, bookkeepers, servants and even birds. The Chinese believed, like many other cultures at that time, that the life would continue after death and the tomb of the deceased should be filled with everything they might need in the afterlife, much like the tombs of ancient Egypt pharaohs.

The tomb mound of Quin Shi Huang is surrounded by mountains and rivers from north, west and south, so the terracotta army was placed in the east, where all the conquered states lie, to protect their leader against the possible attacks of hostile enemies. Every soldier was equipped with a weapon, like a sword or a crossbow, but in time the organic materials decomposed and some of the figures were robbed, when the arms were needed in war battles.

At first every figure was thought to represent an actual person but in time the scientist noticed that only about 10 different types of heads were used. There were also sets of legs, armors and torsos. Facial expressions, eyebrows and lines in hair were individually made to each figure. Originally they were painted with bright pigments, but when the color came in touch with oxygen, most of it faded away.

Actual tomb of the Emperor has yet to be excavated, as the exploration of the necropolis surrounding it is not finished.

The museum Vapriikki is located in the city of Tampere, on the riverbank of Tammerkoski and in a walking distance from the railway station. Open from 10 – 18 Tuesday to Sunday, Vapriikki offers you several exhibitions, like Natural History Museum, Time to Play exhibition and Finnish Hockey Hall of Fame. Guided tours on Saturdays and Sundays.

Tickets are 13 € from adults and 5 € from children and students, be sure to take your student card with you when you go!

Wheree do you come from and how long have you lived in Finland?

I come from Denmark and I have been living here about 8 years (7 years and 11 months to be exact)

Tell me a little bit about your home country?

The culture is quite similar to Finland, though the weather is not. The winter is not really “win ter” and summer is often not really warm. Denmark is surrounded by the sea and that’s why the weather is often miserable. Though I must say that the beaches and the sea is what I miss the most.

How come you ended up working at Kyamk? Which position are you in charge of currently?

I was a student at Kyamk and I did my practical training in the international office here. During my specialization training a job opportunity came up and I applied for it. I am still working in the International Office as an International coordinator for incoming exchange students; I’m also a part of International Marketing, and I’m taking part in the work with international tutors.

Could you evaluate Kyamk organization culture?

It’s a good question. Staff here is helpful and willing to help in a long way as well as guiding and giving the answers to students. I quite like the culture here.

What do you usually do in your free time?

I have two kids so I have no free time (laughter). But when I’m free, I like to read books, watch movies, go to cinema.

What do you like best about Finland and why?

Winter and sauna. In Denmark we don’t have sauna as a traditional thing, it’s there too, but not as many as Finland. And the winter, I just like that time of the year.

Do you like travelling? How many countries have you been to?

New studying year begun nearly two months ago, do you want to express any wish to the staffs and students at Kyamk?

Well, I hope you all have started the study year well and you are not too overwhelmed by the tasks ahead of you. And enjoy the autumn and winter.

I love travelling. I have been to around 36 different countries. I travelled a lot when I was young, from most of European countries to US, Australia, India, Russia, Malawi and Zimbabwe. It’s easier when you are young, no kids, no family ties, no bills to pay and lots of free time. The most significant travels I have made are a bus ride from Denmark to India and back which took 4 months; and then working in Malawi for almost 5 months, in a development project for orphans.

Spring Rolls

Slice onion and carrot into small pieces Add minced pork, egg and seasonings and mix well.

Dip rice papers into water to make them softer.

Place a table spoon of the mixture in the middle of each rice paper then wrap well and scroll in to a small logshape.

Pour oil into a pan and fry the spring rolls at medium temperature.

Spring rolls are done when they turn into dark yellow.

Spring rolls are served with fish sauce/ sweet chili sauce.

Rice paper 200 g minced pork 1 carrot 1 onion 1 egg 50 g ear mushroom (optional) 50 g glass noodles (optional) Oil Seasonings: ¼ tsp. chicken stock, ¼ tsp. pepper, ¼ tsp. fish sauce or salt.

About Time is the story of a 21 year old boy Tim, who discovers one day that he can travel back in time into his own past. On top of his to-do list is simple, get a girlfriend, get a great life. As he attempts to recreate his future he finds that meddling with the past has consequences and perhaps it is not as easy as it seems.

Richard Curtis, known for his quirky and funny british comedys such as Four Weddings and a Funeral, Bean and Love Actually has come forth with a fantastic film this year.

Focused on diverse relationships in the midst of seaside picniks and city night lights, this release inspires your inner senses. It feels at times as you could almost taste and smell the experiences the characters are put through. This sixth sense wittyness is also explorable through the plotline, which brings vivid memories of first loves even to the most emotionless audience, all the whilst making a good overall statement that life is to be appreciated and that Carpe Diem really is more than just a cliché. Rachel McAdams makes a reappearence as a time travelers wife (remember the 2009 flick Times Travelers wife anyone?), making an authentic performace beside her on-screen husband Domhnall Gleeson without over the top romanticism. And ofcourse not to be forgotten is Bill Nighy, a regular in Curtis's film set, who in my opinion my friends is just the cherry on top.

If you are not too familiar with Curtis's films I would definately give this film a try. It has a little something for everyone with brilliant laugh out loud moments that turn out to be quite rare in todays comedy genre films. Still reminiscing of the past summer? It really is about time, no pun intended, that you made an autumn night visit to the film theatre.
