The morns are meeker than they were, The nuts are getting brown; The berry’s cheek is plumper, The rose is out of town. The maple wears a gayer scarf, The field a scarlet gown. Lest I should be old-fashioned, I’ll put a trinket on. -Emily Dickinson The golden autumn days are over and we are left with grey rainy weather instead. So what to do about that? When everything appears to be dead or dying outside and no amount of coffee seems to help against the cold and growing darkness you will just have to improvise. Try hot chocolate, or get a new notebook, write poetry, learn to knit, dig up your warm sweaters from storage, read you favorite book again or get the most colorful umbrella to brighten the day. And did you try Hernekeitto and Pannukakku for lunch yet? It is happiness on a plate. To battle autumn depression, you can always organize your own film festival, host a tea party or invent your very own non-battery-powered (board) game or write old friends you haven’t spoken to in a while. There are also a lot of events to look forward to, because you know, the days are getting shorter so there is always a reason to have a party. I am sure you enjoyed the latest Kupla Mythology Party at the House of Rock and Kyamk’s Got Talents: International Evening and if you like board games why don’t you pop by the Student’s Board Game Night on Thursday at the restaurant Aula? Meanwhile we hope to get you a little bit excited about another upcoming event: the Christmas Fair, with a little article about who organizes it and what it is that you can look forward to in December. Something else I have noticed: There are people here at Kyamk you see almost every day but you know nothing about them. Two of these people were interviewed for this week’s issue of Insider: Aleksanderi Repo from Klaani and Satu Hynynen from Info desk. I hope you all make the most of these gloomy days in autumn, because one thing is certain: November is the right kind of month to learn how to make paper planes and origami cranes.

Aleksanteri Repo, a canditate for SAMOK In the 8th issue, the main article is about a person, who is well known to many students of our university, but probably don’t know a lot about him as about good leader, clever politician and broadminded man. And these are only several words, which can describe all strong sides of Aleksanteri Repo, the chairman of Klaani and the candidate for the same position in SAMOK. But let’s start from the beginning.

Aleksanteri, first of all, thank you that you found the time in your hectic schedule and answered to our questions. First of all, tell about your background.

Hello. Also, would like to say thank you, that you are writing article about me. What comes to my background, I was born in Kotka and spent my childhood there. I moved to Kouvola because of Kyamk, but I still consider Kotka as a home city. In teenage I was definately a ‘’heavy metal’’ guy: I was listening appropriate music, had long hair and only black clothes and playing music with some friends and simply having fun time. Nowadays, probably top 3 favorite bands are Faith No More, Dream Theater and CMX. Since early ages I liked reading books, especially graphic novels. But for today I give preference to science fiction books and my favorite writers are Isaac Asimov and Dan Simmons.

How did you come up with idea to work in student union Klaani?

Well, in 2010 my friend from media department, offered me to be his campaign manager, because he was running to Finnish parlament. I agreed because politics has always been an interesting part of life for me. In 2011 we were doing his campaign and decided that probably we can get some votes from Kyamk students. So, thereby I met heads of the Klaani and became pretty good friends with them. In the end of 2011 there was a time for a new chairman of student union and one of the former chiefs offered me to take this position. I’m still going to be a chairman for this academic year, but next year here will be another person. Because I think it is good for organization to have a new person, moreover Kyamk has many talented and interesting people, who can manage with this role. And for me, two years are enough. It’s time to move forward.

We know that this year you are taking a part in the chairman elections to SAMOK union. Could you tell about this.

SAMOK is a head union of student unions. If student unions work at the level of one university, SAMOK has more power and cooperates at the level of government, important organizations and so on. Every year they have an election and a new chairman. I decided that I have already a lot of experience in such area, I have many strong features as well, so it will be interesting to work on such position and try to make some improvements. I have five strong competitors. But I will do my best and the main goal is to show to the election commission that I am the best for this position. Election commission consists of representative group from every student union and each group has a number of votes, depending on the members. For example, Klaani has 1700 members, it is almost a half of the total number of students, and in the commission our group has 4 votes, meanwhile Helsinki’s or Tampere’s groups will have more than 12 votes.

And when will the elections be held? Already in 2 weeks.

Of course and actually I’m in it. At the moment I am a chairman of ‘’Left Alliance’’ party.

A person, who inspires you the most...

I like vision of ‘’old school’’ politician Ele Alenius. He said that humanity is the unified whole, and everyone should take care of each other. I have the same opinion as he. And also Isaac Asimov. He inspires me to be a person like he was: wise man with the big heart.

Christmas Design Market This year, the Christmas design market will be held at Paja on the 30th of November this year, between 10h and 15h. It will have a pop-up organic cafe, student´s self manufactured products for sale, live music, a second hand shop and there will be charity collecting for a new childrens hospital. THE ORGANIC POP-UP CAFE The organic pop-up cafe is held by a barista from a Helsinki based coffee roastery called Kaffa Roastery. What makes this cafe special is how they pay attention especially to the coffee's journey from growing and roasting to the final product in the cup. Also the incredients in their baked goods are organic and from nearby providers. NEW CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL There will also be a charity collection for the new children's hospital in Helsinki. By funding from individuals the construction of this important cause will be faster and there will be built a unit focused on children's special health care by the year 2017.You can read more about the cause from the official site uusilastensairaala2017.fi The event is being organised by six people from Kyamk. Jere Vilo, the leader, Saara Ikäläinen,John Saragosa, Mari Viiard, Mattea Näveri and Mari Kalilainen. Patteri Network is also participating and sponsoring the event. The main idea and point behind the event is promoting students products.You will be able to purchase original products created and designed by Kyamk´s students. There will also be a Second Hand store within the Design Market, supported by the international tutors Anh Minh, Hoang Trang, Anni Vesterinen and Bac Le. If you are interested to sell there yourself, please find the event Christmas Second Hand Store on Facebook. Not only will this be promoting our school´s students work, but will also be for charity. Donation boxes, placed around the space will be accessibile to everyone, and part of the profits from the Second Hand store will be going for charity as well. If you have something you would like to donate to sell for charity, please find the event on Facebook and follow the instructions there.

Every year people seem to go into a frenzy of Christmas, but it hasn´t really been felt in our school. The team behind the market agrees on hoping that this market will become a Kyamk tradition, repeated every year, even when the current organisers graduate, having been taken over by a new organising team. If you are thinking about selling in the fair, but you are not sure, a good incentive is the fact that the school staff members will be visiting this event, and the school might pick up one of the products for this years Christmas bussiness presents. There will also be other professionals who just might see something they like.

Jere Vilo, Designer-stylist, Age 21,Helsinki First I came up with the idea when I noticed Kyamk doesn't have its own traditional christmas fair. Besides I think it’s a nice event, also important for especially design students to get to present their products and the experience from standing behing their own work. Our goal is to make this an expected yearly event. I really hope people see the potential of this type of event which is missing from our university's yearly agenda. I’m really happy about our active core team of students who are willing to put this all together. My main responsibility in the team is to keep the event together, collect all the participants and to keep the communication up with them. Saara Ikäläinen, Designer-stylist, 23, Nummela Last year when we decided doing it first, I was thinking that there are so little happenings, so it was really nice to be doing something extra. Now we want to do it again, make it a Kyamk tradition. I’ve been helping Jere mostly and spreading all the posters around school. I hope I will be doing this next year again and try to make it a school tradition.

John Saragosa, International Designer, 35, Santa Barbara, California I though that last years event was the first event of last year that I enjoyed and, so I was excited when I had the chance to participate this year. I´ve been resolving some space issues and doing the advertisment of the event in Kotka. I excpect this year to be a success. I just want to build upon the success of last year, and this year help make it bigger and better.

Mari Viiard, Graphic Designer, 23, Estonia I support this kind of an old traditional way of selling and buying products. Back in time, the market was a place where people gathered to sell, to buy and to communicate. Nowadays communication between people has moved to the internet. I want to talk and smile to people face to face. I have done the graphical materials for advertising the design market. Generally I hope that we will have a fair, where people can find things to buy and of course I want that visitors will leave with positive emotions and thought “I hope Kyamk students are doing to do that next year again.”

Mattea Näveri, International Designer, 25, Croatia I love Christmas and really liked this event last year, so I wanted to participate and enjoy it from a different perspective as well. I’ve been doing mostly the arranging things, like talking to some sponsors and running around finding things out that need to be figured out. Also, the second hand store supported by the tutors. I’m excited to see how many people turn up and how much donations we manage to collect. I also hope this event will become a Kyamk tradition.

This years market is themed as “Mexican/Native American” and the theme colour is red. The team has also asked for students from the school to perform at the event, specifically, the lovely Vietnamese ladies from the group Numaneko. If you would like to perform there, please contact one of them for auditions. The team wished to thank their sponsors, and invite all of you to come support our students, have fun and persist and make this a future Kyamk, soon to be Ksamk, tradition. Crimson sun music video I sit at the end of a table. A man sits opposite me, plates with meat and vegetables are set in front of us.The meat is infested with maggots, my damaged face wrapped with bandages, the man is dead.This is not a description of my nightmare, but a scene from metal band Crimson Sun’s newest music video for the song “Burned away”.

The man, Mika Hämäläinen, is certainly not dead, worms are mealworms and my face under the heavy make- up is fine. The video is a production of three audiovisual media students from Kyamk. Erik Lintunen, directing and script, Toni Jaatinen, cinematography and colour correction, and Antti Halinen, production, lights and editing. The production of the video took off in august, when their classmate Jani Paakala introduced them to this opportunity. After they had their team gathered, the producer, mr. Halinen contacted Crimson Sun. They held meetings to discuss what type of a video the band had in mind. - The idea was to adduce the band and have a theme fitting storyline to go with it. The plot was contemplated as a team, but Erik Lintunen made the final script, which then was sent to the band to be approved, said Toni Jaatinen. After the idea and script was clear, the team began location scouting. Antti Halinen was in charge of reserving and renting the locations. They also did a few filming and lighting tests in the schools studio. The first day of shooting the video was for the bands playing part. It took place in Hankkija halls in Koria, the access to the old industry building was the courtesy of Jyrki “Iipu” Heinola. - The hall matched the theme perfectly and we used the junk lying around as props. We ended up doing 18 hours of work on the first day, but we were prepared for that, Jaatinen laughs. - The singer Sini Seppälä was very natural in front of the camera, says the director Erik Lintunen. On the second day the crew shot the story part in Suviera-hall at Kasarminmäki. This is where I had the honor to step in to the project to play the female part. The make-up was the work of a make-up artist Tytti Vaaleri. - Working with actors was easy, as they knew what they were doing, says Erik Lintunen.

Making the music video was a personal project for the trio and something to have for their seminar work. All in all, the crew found the production fun to make and educational. - Music videos are a very unrestricted art form, so you can make a lot of technical choices, for example in filming or editing, that wouldn’t work out in a movie, Jaatinen sums up. - It would’ve been nice to have a set designer with us to help design the set. Set up took some time, he says.

You probably know her, especially people who have lost their USB stick or mobile phone.You walk past her office every day, but you barely know her name and what her main job in our university is. This issue, we decided to interview Mrs. Satu Hynynen – our university staff in the Info room.The interesting thing is while we were doing the interview one student came and asked for her lost mobile phone!

Q: Could you introduce yourself to our readers? A: Hello students, my name is Satu Hynynen and currently I am working in Kyamk as Customer Service Secretary, in Finnish “Asiakaspalvelusihteeri”. I live in Kouvola but I was born in Tampere. I graduated in 2010.

Q: When did you start working here in Kyamk? A: I came to Kouvola to work in a project in the university, at that time our main campus was still in the city center. After the school was moved to Kasarminmäki in 2009, I officially work in the Info Room.

Q: What are your daily tasks at work? A: My work always starts at 8 o’clock. I have to prepare the plan and letter forms for people, and help students if they have problems with printer and so on. Sometimes, students come to my office to ask about teacher’s rooms. And of course other supervising tasks.

Q: Beside university, what are your hobbies? A: I like baking cakes and cookies. And I also help my children with their own hobbies. They play clarinet and flute in the local orchestra.

Q: What do you think about our students and do you want to say something to

them? A: Here we have so many international students and I see that they are so happy to be here. That thing makes me enjoy working here. I want to wish them a great studying year in Kyamk, and enjoy the white snow which will come soon. And one more thing, don’t forget your USB when you leave the classroom.

“Kartoffelpuffer”(Potato Pancakes)

Put oil and flour in the frying pan. Place the potato-dough onto the flour – this prevents the “Puffer” from burning – and fry until golden. Flip occasionally.

Cut the onion into small pieces and fry until it becomes glassy. Skin and grate the potatoes – mind your fingers – and mix in bowl with the egg and a bit of flour – not too much though: it has to be juicy. Add some salt. Combine the fried onions with the potato-dough.

When they’re done – serve them with mashed apples.

Ryan Stone, a medical engineer, has the best view a job can offer. Orbiting around earth with a small group of astronauts, her days consist of simple pleasures such as watching the sunrise. It is when a chain effect of accidents leaves Ryan and her crew drifting in space, that reality hits home: in space no one can hear you scream. This film will be hands down the most visual experience you will have this year in a film theatre. Alfonso Cuarón (Children of Men, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban) has re-invented sci-fi film with the use of amazing technology, making Gravity a milestone in its genre. I will start off with saying I do not believe in the overrated use of 3D technology in modern hollywood films and will always go watch a film in 2D if that option is available, mostly due to the fact that the fictional three dimensionalism does not add any value to the usual film. Gravity restores my faith in enduring two hours of uncomfortable special effects glasses as the films breath taking cinematography and use of perspective literally puts you into orbit. Every scene is designed to give the viewer a realistic experience of weightlessness along with views of our small water planet that im pretty sure is actual video footage from Nasa.

The simpleness of Gravity's plot depicts a metaphor of peoples personal battles through which we explore experiences of existentialism and the survival instinct. The film reflects on human alienation in the most extreme case, how geographically far can a person escape the memories of their past? Sandra Bullock and George Clooney give a believable depiction of a spiritual odyssey through the universes power on the human body and mind. Who knew that a production with two actors could turn out this good?
