We are now at the end of the last week before spring holidays, which translates to a week of chilling at home, sinking deep into your sofa to watch every single soap opera there is on TV, spending way too much on the Internet, playing pool at BarQ, travelling somewhere and/or just hanging out with friends, whatever is your preferred form of relaxation. As neutral and honorable journalists, we don’t judge you!

BUDGET SPRING TRAVEL

The winter is going away from this small city very soon, are you ready for the beautiful coming spring? Have you had any travel plans for this coming season? Some people say it is off-season travel, but to my mind, this season still stays in high-season travel list. During this season, there are fewer tourists, more relaxed atmosphere, greater cultural options, more chances to mingle with the locals, and no sweltering heat like during summer time. As budget-travellers, you might find the off-season as a great opportunity to get some incredible deals on airfares, train tickets, hostel rates, and cheaper price in most of the museums and other tourist places. Choosing a budget Off-Season destination is not easy; especially when our starting point is Kouvola, Finland. In the limited piece of writing, the first place I would suggest is the Spring Break trip’s secret – Prague, Czech Republic.You can immerse yourselves in such an alluring atmosphere in one of the most beautiful capitals around Europe. Discovering Prague Castle - an imposing fortress across the river from the main city centre, wandering the Old Town

Square or the wide stone Charles Bridge with street artists and ornate statues of the town’s historical figures will not let you down. It has been constantly ranked on top 25 best destination of the world (Tripadvisor.com, 2013) Another enchanting place is Krakow, the old capital and one of the most culturally cities in Poland. The Main Market Square of Krakow, a huge 10-acre square surrounded by cafés, shops, and pubs, is such a medieval feast both in daytime and at night. The city itself is really worth a visit. Additionally, you stand a golden chance to take a half-hour bus no 304 from Krakow to Wieliczka Salt Mine. Thousands of steps will take you back to the 13th century to the fascinating world underground. According to Tripadvisor.com, The Salt Mine is the Traveller’s Choice 2013 winner and Krakow is among the best destinations in 2013. Especially, Krakow is easily accessible by train and by plane. If you want to take train, for example, do not forget to take the International Student card with you, or book the train for the weekend travel, you will get a much better price.

Both suggested above destinations are not yet in Eurozone, and have lower living costs. All travellers can take advantages from it to enjoy fantastic trip at a low budget.You had better be aware of the exchange rate and be prepared to exchange some money in advance, as it would cost you a lot if you do exchange money at the airport. If you want to consider a much cheaper and closer trip from Kouvola, it is also advisory that you take a look at the ship to Tallinn, Estonia (vikingline.fi) or the Free-visa cruise to St. Petersburg (stpeterline. com). Usually the price for one 2-4 person cabin is approximately 180-200€ and sometimes it is probably offered at even lower price for a three day cruise. With careful preparation and flexibility in grasping cheap tickets, you will definitely find your travelling time more enjoyable. Henry Miller says: “One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things”. Hope you will have many new ways of seeing things. PS: Do not forget your jacket at home, get layering, stay healthy and handsome while travelling!

MY VALENTINE?

Just like every year Valentine’s day was coming up. Now this can either suck really bad for you or put a smile on your face, which will last for two weeks. Whichever one of those it was, the designer party was there to help you out. The Paja building was host for the special night. Decorated with candles, cool disco lights and a love cave it was the perfect location for this party. Everybody brought their own drinks and snacks (no of course no alcohol – this is school you silly!) After a while, two girls decided to start dancing, which was a little bit awkward at first but soon they inspired the others to start dancing as well.

time, it was time to give everybody a card back. This was truly fantastic! Everybody was smiling. Cards ranged from very cute to a little bit creepy, but nonetheless I think everybody was happy with their card, and this just shows how you can make a complete stranger smile with only a little effort. Even though Paja is the perfect location for a classy party like this we had to leave at ten, because security was going to check the buildings in one hour. Though it was a shame to leave this building, I quite enjoyed leaving, because I was all out of drinks. (Still no alcohol!) Off to BarQ! This was the first time I’ve seen BarQ so full with people! The bartenders had a pretty busy night. DJs Aake Rikhard Tenttula and Gerald Cicero continued their beats in the bar, which gave it a similar atmosphere as in the Paja building.

The dress code was black and white, which is one of my favorites, since I don’t own a single black or white piece of clothing. So obviously I felt a little underdressed... Only to find out when I arrived that a lot of people looked incredibly classy with dresses and bow ties all over the place. I figured my answer to why I wasn’t dressed in black or white is that it was my very artistic interpretation of the fact that nothing in this world is black or white.

So all in all I think it was a good party. I was very happy to receive an envelope with a lollypop and a small card that said ‘’Hyvää ystävänpäivää’’, which I have been told to mean ‘’Happy Valentine’s day’’. Now I wouldn’t know and I didn’t google it, but thanks!

I was impressed by the amount of people who had actually brought a Valentine’s day card with them, because I don’t think that would work very well in the Netherlands. So hooray for Finland! So when everybody was dancing and having a good

Wood academy EXIBITION REPORT

First part of February the exposition took place at our university downstairs at Paja’s hall. It was sponsored and organized with the support of Wood Academy. Beautiful objects of various furniture with incredible design were made by students of the Kyamk University.

H.Naukkarinen , LOKO salvers by J.Määttä, HIDE cases for electrical sockets by M.Kantoniemi, hanging pot system named WOODEN GARDEN by K.Laamanen, LINK souvenir by M.Karvinen and SERENE lamp by P. Nopanen. At once it is possible to note that everything is done with a high level of quality, professionalism and has stylish modern design.

First, from 13.01.2014 till 19.01.2014 all works were exposed at Imm Cologne 2014 international exhibition dedicated to furniture and interior design, second biggest fair besides Milan in 2011.

Interesting fact is that some of these works such as GRADIUS and plywood tray were made of new innovative material UPM Grada, which is sustainable and renewable and holds great promise for the furniture design.

Few words from the curator of the project at Kyamk Sabine Suorsa: ”Students made their prototypes here in our university, then it was taken to manufacture to UPM company, as it needed to be produced with certain technology and on special machines, which has this firm.When everything was ready, me and students went to Cologne, where we were making and preparing stands for the exhibition and afterwards naturally presenting their works to others.The interest was big, both from entrepreneurs and other students, who came there.. ” What are the products? As it came out there was quite an impressive amount of absolutely diverse things: GRADIUS shelf by Kitka Collective, flowerpots AMPPELI3 by A.Kuokkanen & M. Kemppainen, DOMINO candle holders by M. Mäensivu, N.Hakala &

What is UPM Grada? It is a cut birch veneers bonded together in a cross bonded constructions. As birch is known as extremely strong and stable wood, it has a huge potential to be bent with UPM technology using high temperature and pressure. From 14.02.2014 the exposition moved to the next place in the center of Kouvola – Hub international network of entrepreneurship. We hope you were lucky to enjoy these beautiful creations with your own eyes.

rooms. In anatomy it is important to learn by hands with anatomical models. And I think it is easier to create a good online session if students know me and have met me before. Everyone can be themselves and understand for example the humour better. AC is very useful in anatomy and physiology, as it is possible to draw and explain better. One of my colleagues said that he prefers old fashion “chalk and board style”, but AC is a good alternative to it. I teach a group of approximately. In AC they are all able to see the “board”, and they can also ask and make comments better.

Insider continues interviewing the winners of VOPETEKO-13 award for online teaching.This time Insider interviewed Taina Lehtonen, the winner of the contest. She teaches in Health care at Jylppy campus and she’s gotten the award for her online course “Anatomy and physiology” aimed at first year students. Insider got interested how it went with medical science. What has made you to switch to online teaching? I was not fascinated by Moodle as online teaching platform, because it was only about giving and reversing tasks online. I thought that online teaching is kind of “dead”. Osku Kiri was presenting AC in one teachers’ meeting. I instantly knew it would be a useful tool to include in my teaching.

Are there any other virtual courses you are teaching? I have about 40 – 60 % online teaching in all my courses.Though, none of them is entirely online yet. For online teaching, good methods and equipment is needed.

I saw in SoleOPS that your virtual course “Anatomy and physiology” was aimed at first year students. What was their reaction to that you will be using online learning? Usually most students have no experience in online studying and I am the first teacher to use AC for working with them. Nevertheless, this year one student expressed the common opinion: “I was quite suspicious but after the first session I was impressed.” After two AC meetings one adult education group asked if we could do all the studying by AC. According to them, it is much better than studying by video conference which we have been doing while connecting Kouvola and Mikkeli.

What, in your opinion, is the future of teaching medical disciplines online? I am sure that there will be more online studying and teaching in the future. However, it will be used when it is workable, I do not believe in any compulsions. Are there any other projects coming up? I am going to improve my online teaching methods by using students’ feedback. I am a beginner in online teaching, and there are many tools and programs which I have to get acquainted with. I would like to see that Kyamk will invest in development of online teaching.The best way is to ensure that technical support and help will be available and as good as it has been. Secondly, I would like to have future opportunities to share praxis with colleagues in INNO-workshops.

How did you use AC for combining the practical and theoretical parts? My courses are not entirely online.There are also sessions in class-

try our giant chocolate chip cookie! (Makes two 15cm cookies)

TOOLS: saucepan, spon/mixer, bowl, skillet

INGREDIENTS 110 g butter 110 g granulated sugar 110 g light brown sugar 1 medium egg 1 tsp vanilla extract 225 g all purpose flour 1/2 tsp baking soda 1/4 tsp salt 75 g milk chocolate chips 75 g dark chocolate chips 1. Preheat oven to 175C.

5.Stir in chocolate chips.

2. Melt butter in a saucepan. Add sugars, stir and let cool for a few minutes.

6.Divide batter between baking forms or skillets or bake in one larger skillet, for about 17-25 minutes.

3.Stir in the egg and vanilla extract.

7.Cookies should be a little brown and crisp around the edges but soft in the center.

4.In a bowl, mix flour, baking soda and salt then add to the butter mixture.

Anyhow. Their fetish for men with table clothes on their heads does not remain unnoticed. *Insert surprised gasp* After lots of noise and blood-splatter the lone survivor gets to enjoy some local food and the hospitality of the local people those without the funny hats, because the bad guys are the ones that always get to wear the funny hats.

Yes, it was pretty shot and all the injuries and how they were inflicted looked pretty damn realistic, but apart from that it was a generic plot with replaceable characters. One of a kind will pop up every now and again because Hollywood seems to run out of ideas and will easily get directors and actors one or two pretty trophies for their mantelpieces.

Also: Afghanistan looks a lot like North America, but who am I to judge.
