EDITORIAL

A fresh issue of the Insider magazine is here! This week we show you how to make some awesome face paint out of crayons so you can rock those theme parties! We teach you how to cook a traditional Vietnamese noodle soup; which will pull you right through those cold days.

The work has now officially started again and everybody is back in their working positions. In last edition you’ve read about the new exchange students and I am pretty sure we’ve now successfully infiltrated every part of Kyamk. Most of us are business students but Christian and me are design students and we will also support the Insider magazine. Christian is a third year Graphic Design student from Bremen, Germany and has a passion for print. I am a media student from Breda, The Netherlands but here at Kyamk I will mainly do Graphic Design as well. So far we’ve enjoyed the organized chaos of the design and we are now ready to contribute to Kyamk’s design portfolio.

Something I really wanted to share is the fact that there’s this phenomenon that I’ve seen here in Finland many times already (like 5 times). It’s really cool, and super rare in The Netherlands. It’s called a Sun Dog (parhelion) and it happens when the light is reflected in a certain way by the ice crystals, look it up for more details, for now; just see how awesome it is!

Have a nice day!

KYAMK GAME NIGHT Have you ever found yourself in a boring day, and you do not know what to do, and riding bicycle or going outside for a walk seems impossible because it is almost -20C outside and it snows heavily. Well, we have an idea for you. Why don’t you take your friends and play some interesting board games with them. If you do not have any, let’s go to the Student’s Board Game Night in Aula restaurant!

to play and it turned out to be a good choice when everyone had played before and knew the instructions. Later on, one Spanish guy suggested playing “Hernerokka”. The name of the game is literally translated as “pea soup” in Finnish and basically players have to perform different actions according to the card they have on their hands. Do not worry about getting bored because you can try different type of plays here. Only minor thing to be mentioned is that most of the game instructions are in Finnish so you will probably find it difficult to know the rules if you do not know Finnish much.

The Board Game Night is held by Heimo non-profit organization, and it takes place every 3rd Thursday of every month. The place is in Aula restaurant, and if you do not know where the place is, it is inside Sokos Hotel in the center of Kouvola. Last Thursday, by the time we got there, everyone had been there already and started playing. I am pretty sure that there is a couple of games that you have not heard of before, either how to play those. At first, we picked a famous one “Bang!”

Cannot wait until next month to play board games? We also have Board Game meetings on every Monday at 5pm in the main building. Come and join or you find us on Facebook for more info: “Game Guild of Kasarminmaki”

GAME GEM “WE DON’T SEE THINGS AS THEY ARE,WE SEE THEM AS WE ARE.” - this years GGJ theme

At around 15:30 everyone registered for the FGJ Kymenlaakso assembled at the KSAO Liiketalous. Computers, drawing tablets were provided by the school an Kyamk for those who did not bring their own and we started putting together our workstations and finding people to team up with. Among game design students from Kyamk there were also a lot of programmers from Kotka there. When everything was set up we went to the Auditorium to get briefed on how things would progress from here on out and were finally presented with this years theme: We don’t see things as they are, we see them as we are. Quite a philosophical step up from the previous years ( 2009 - “As long as we have each other, we will never run out of problems”, 2010 - “The rain in Spain falls mainly on the plain” and “Deception”, 2011 - “Extinction”, 2012 - An image of Ouroboros, 2013 - Sound of a Heartbeat). Now it was time to brainstorm. Find ideas and create a concept. What does it all mean? How do we incorporate this theme into a game? How do we perceive life? What is life? What?

What is a game jam? Just like every other “jamming session”, a game jam brings together all kinds of people who are interested in games: designers and artists, programmers, amateurs, professionals and students. It does not matter whether or not you have experience in the field of game making. What counts is your enthusiasm. So over the course of a weekend or a 48 hour timespan the participants work in groups of 3 to 6 people to create a game with only limited resources and a ticking clock hanging over their heads. Global Game Jam The GGJ is no different from other game jams in most regards but it is the biggest game jam and as the name says it is an event that happens globally in different locations but starts and ends at the same time on the last weekend in January.

Once an idea was decided upon it was up to the designers and artists to create the characters and the environment and bring to life a story that was playable and hopefully appealing later on to a bigger audience.

That means: Here in Finland we started on Friday the 24th of January at 17:00 UTC+2. At this time we were given this years theme which is supposed to be the baseline of the game in some form or another. 2009 was the year that the first GGJ was held. Back then it was 1650 participants in 23 countries and they produced 370 games. Since 2009 the GGJ has grown every year. The numbers of 2013 were 16,705 participants in 63 countries with 3248 games produced. If you want to play any of the games from the previous year, you can visit the official GGJ website: globalgamejam. org

On Saturday and Sunday we were treated with pizza, thermal blankets and more coffee. The bean bags from Meduusa studio and the small sofas in the school provided us with more or less comfy sleeping opportunities whenever our eyes and limbs threatened to give up on us. All in all it was a hell of an experience, not just for those participating for the first time, but all of us and I think we all agree, that we would do it all over again. In fact we will do it all over again - next year in Kotka. My sleeping bag is prepared.

Finnish Game Jam The FGJ consists of several jamming sites and took place for the first time in 2010 with 3 locations. This year it had already expanded to 14 sites from Helsinki to Rovaniemi. In 2013 FGJ ry became a registered association.

Thank you all for a fantastic weekend. To watch all the silliness that happened got to: http://bambuser. com/channel/fgjkymenlaakso

You cannot imagine the amounts of coffee and energy drinks consumed during these 48h. It was enormous.

HOW TO

Make Face Paint Out Of Crayons Face paint is expensive and usually doesn’t come in the colour you want? No problem! Here is a simple and cheap tutorial for all of your costume and cosplay problems that ever involved a colourful face. And you might need it.There is quite a few parties up and coming and they are all costume parties.

You need: 1 teaspoon of olive oil 1 teaspoon of Shéa Butter a few drops of your favourite perfume a spoon a pot a glass small containers (e.g. contact lens containers) and of course CRAYONS (preferably Crayolas)

Fill pot with water - not too full tough. Get the water boiling. Put oil, Shéa butter and perfume into the glass and place it in the pot of boiling water. Wait until everything is nicely melted down. Throw in the pieces of crayon - don’t forget you can now make any colour you want, just mix them together. Stir occasionally.

Voilà tout! You did it! You made your own face paint in less than 30. Well done!

Note: I don’t know why, but for some reason Crayolas work best for this sort of thing, not trying to advertise here.

When everything is one semi-liquid homogenous mush, pour it into the small containers and let it cool down.

PROFILE

JARMO VUORIVIRTA Can you introduce yourself? My name is Jarmo Vuorivirta, I have taught in Kyamk for about 20 years now, so I am a very old worker. I also worked as a professional photographer from year 1977 or 1978. I started as a portrait photographer, today I don’t work as a professional photographer anymore but I enjoy photography now.

If you could give one piece of advice, what would it be? When I teach the nature photography course, I explain you should photograph your feelings. You should know yourself before taking a camera.Try to capture your emotions in the picture. What hobbies do you have besides photography? A dog. I’m teaching him as well. I like well-mannered dogs.

What is your favorite food/drink? My favorite drink is Irish coffee, because I’m doing it my way. My daughter is a very good chef, that’s why I can’t say what the best food is.

Why did you come to Kouvola/Kyamk? I taught in many towns before Kouvola. Over time I got more and more courses in Kouvola, and then I had enough to stay here.

What do you teach here at Kyamk? Digital photography, Photoshop and nature photography, but the latter is only a small part of the yearly work.

What is the worst thing about Kyamk? We do not have enough space here. For example, maybe this spring is the last semester that we can use this room as a studio. This room is built to be a studio and that is why it is the only working room in Kouvola.

What is the best thing about Kyamk? As I mentioned before, I now have balance in my life. I have work time but also free time.

What was your dream job as a child? You don’t think this is a dream job? As a professional photographer every client wants something new and brilliant, which is very hard. Here you can teach and then relax afterwards. Freedom is very important, I have a family, I don’t live in Kouvola and I have a dog, which needs a lot of time. With this job I can balance my working time and free time.

VIETNAMESE FOOD

PHO BROTH INGREDIENTS 5 to 6 pounds of beef knuckles or leg bones 6 quarts cold water 2 medium onions, quartered 4-inch piece of fresh ginger, halved lengthwise 2 cinnamon sticks 1 tablespoon coriander seeds

1 tablespoon fennel seeds 6 star anise 6 whole cloves 1 black cardamom pod 1 1/2 tablespoons salt 1/4 cup fish sauce 1-inch piece yellow rock sugar

1 to 2 pounds small (1/8-inch wide) dried “banh pho noodles 1/2 pound raw eye of round, sirloin or tri-tip steak, thinly sliced across the grain 1/4 cup thinly sliced onions 1/4 cup chopped cilantro leaves

OPTIONAL GARNISHES SERVED ALONGSIDE PHO: Sprigs of fresh mint and/or Asian/Thai basil, Bean sprouts, Thinly sliced red chilies, Lime wedges, Fish sauce/ Hoisin sauce

Place the beef knuckle in a very large pot. Season with salt; fill pot with 2 gallons of water. Bring to boil, and cook for about 1-2 hours.

Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Soak the rice noodles in water for about 20 minutes, then cook in boiling water until soft, but not mushy, about 5 minutes. Slice the frozen beef paper thin. The meat must be thin enough to cook instantly.

Skim fat from the surface of the broth, add the oxtail, radish and onions. Toast until fragrant the anise pods, cinnamon stick, cloves, peppercorns and ginger (for about 3 minutes). Tie them all in a spice bag; add to the soup. Stir in sugar, salt and fish sauce. Simmer over medium-low heat for about 2 more hours (the longer, the better). At the end of cooking, taste, and add salt as needed. Strain broth, and return to the pot to keep at a simmer.

Place some noodles into each bowl, and arrange slices of raw meat on the top. Ladle boiling broth over the beef and noodles in the bowl. Finish broth with onion slices and cilantro. Serve with garnishes served alongside Pho. Anyone can add toppings to their liking.

12 years a slave recounts the true story of Solomon Northup, a free black man in New York living with his wife and children. After he is lured into a life of slavery, Solomon must put everything he has learned aside and start fighting for his survival. This film has earned its spot amongst the Oscar nominations, bringing forth an incredible story portrayed by a cast of talented actors. Chiwetel Ejiofor's delivers a truely heartfelt performance with the help of Steve McQueens regular actor Michael Fassbender. Not only is the performance realistic, enhancing the cruelty and severity of historical events but added to the beautiful cinematography by Sean Bobbitt the scenes take on a life of their own and left the viewer pinching themselves as to remember they are watching a film. The sad truth however is that the themes of the film are deeply rooted in truth, the inequality between humans that even today we work to eradicate. Even with my initial reluctance towards seeing this two hour historic drama, the film flows in a manner that makes sure you are glued to the screen. There is a lot more to this film than a view into the life of a mans biography. This film makes a step forward to make sure that people will always remember and after watching 12 years a slave, you wont want to forget. Go watch it!
