EDITORIAL

Hi all and welcome back to school!

I hope you have had nice and restful holidays and feel like you can continue on the next semester feeling happy and refreshed.

The Insider starts the new semester with a bit of changes and introduces some new looks.

As the winter has officially kicked in, we though it might be good to hear some sports and health tips, as it is hard to make yourself do anything when it is this cold outside.

In the sports section you can read about a team of young runners from Lahti: Lahti Sprinters and in the Food column you can read about how to make a healthy detox smoothie.

Also, we have the main article about the beautiful flower vase created by our talented design students.

In the movie review you can read about The great Gatsby and in the profile read about Jori Pölkki, Kyamk’s media and design team leader.

We are hoping to introduce more change to Insider and give it a new spirit for the new year.

Please, don’t forget to keep sending us your artwork as we aim to promote the student artwork in more places than Kouvola, as Insider gets sent out to other Universities, libraries and cities.

We also encourage you to enter the competition where you can win a Paint Shop Pro! You can read more about it on page 8.

LAHTI SPRINTERS

During the cold winter times it is hard to make yourself move.

But it is important for us to move. So, to give you some incentive we have talked to a team of young runners to tell us more about this sport and it’s benefits.

The team started athletics as a hobby, and then as they progressed they eventually chose the sprinting and hurdling. One of them even has a family history in running “When my father was younger he was a successful hurdler, so I think I became interested in running because of that. I've always been a very competitive person and when I won my first running race at age 9 I got kind of addicted to the feeling you get before and after such an intensive performance.” says Aleksi.

Situated in Lahti, this team of sprinters consists of the coach Jaakko Kivelä and the five runners; Neea Honkala, Jenna Pihkola, Heli Halonen, Kaisa Nurme and Aleksi Harju.

While talking to them about health benefits they all had something different to say. “Training keeps the mind and body healthy. Though I have no special diet, I do pay attention to what I eat.” says Neea.

“Health benefits are guaranteed; you are fit and have more energy! You need to have a regular sleeping rhythm and eat diversely. I myself don’t follow any particular diet, but I try to eat nutritious food, especially protein rich foods. Sometimes I catch myself eating unhealthy food! We run in winter as well as other seasons, just not outside – in wintertime we run in the sports hall.” adds Jenna.

It was interesting to hear from Heli:” In winter we practice outside as long as we can, so long as it’s not slippery, too cold or snowed in. At some point we move indoors to train. The longer runs take place in Pajulahti – about 25min drive from Lahti – and the shorter runs we do in Lahti on the running track.”

The team’s current goals are to develop further as athletes. “My current trainee group was formed just last autumn, so just a couple of months. At the moment the most important goal of the team is to improve team working skills; learning to use the support of other team members. When the team spirit is good, positive things are bound to happen. Of course I also wish for results of individual trainees – for them to develop and reach personal records. The most important goals of the trainees for the coming summer are the Finnish Championship relay race (SM-viestit) in Lahti, the Kalevan kisat in Kuopio and the Finnish Championship of their own age group (19 and 22-series).” says Jaakko.

testing and developing. Every round of iteration improved the design of the product or the working methods. The project was instructive from a designer point of view but also a great opportunity to meet new people and learn something new about oneself.

Project Nollasarja is a project carried out by Mikko Kemppainen and Anne-Maria Kuokkanen, two creative and enthusiastic students from our school Design/ Industrial Design Department. It started on September 2012 and ended at Habitare Furniture Fair in September 2013. It is the product design project for which AMPPELI3 hanging planter was designed and prototyped.

AMPPELI3 is a hanging planter that was designed during the “Designing and productization� course.

The course was a co-operation between Mikkeli University of Applied Sciences, within the learning environment Nollasarja. The learning environment has been developed at Mikkeli University of Applied Sciences in 2011. The theme of the project was to create and design a new product by using the materials manufactured by the main sponsors UPM and Koskisen Oy. In the beginning of the project UPM introduced the new thermoformable wood material UPM Grada, and Koskisen Oy their wide range of plywood materials. Nollasarja 2013 project started on September 2012 and ended at Habitare furniture fair in Helsinki on September 2013. Plan-

The theme of the project Nollasarja was to design new products from materials manufactured by UPM and Koskisen Oy. The new thermoformable UPM Grada plywood worked as an inspiration to the idea of a hanging planter. During the project the idea transformed into 3D CAD drawings, models and prototypes which were finally presented for the public at Habitare 2013 Furniture Fair in Helsinki.

The design process started with testing and information retrieval of the materials and manufacturing methods. After this stage, the process contained several iteration rounds that consisted of prototyping,

ning and brainstorming focused mainly on UPM Grada and the idea of a bended wooden product.

From a group of ideas a hanging planter was selected to further development by the Nollasarja jury.

Mikko Kemppainen and Anne-Maria Kuokkanen also share how instructive the project was to them: ‘’During the project we learned a lot of the following: Design processes and project management, materials and manufacturing methods, 3D modelling and prototyping, offer requesting and cost accounting, marketing and communication, exhibitions.

Most importantly we learned more of ourselves working as designers. It is great to realise what kind of working methods and projects you like, and suits you the best, or what kind of people you like to work with.’’

Several rapid prototyping and material tests have been used to find the final design and combination of materials. This review presents the main results of the material examining tests and determines the key issues that influenced decisions during the designing process.

As a result of the product design process, three prototypes of the AMPPELI3 hanging planter were presented at Habitare 2013 Furniture Fair. During the project we made many good contacts to manufacturing companies and improved our skills in making request for quotation. The prototyping process increased our knowledge of plastic materials and especially of the UPM Grada plywood. Thanks to the project, AMPPELI3 was invited to take part in Cologne furniture fair in January 2014.

Competition Continues Due to technical problems, the results of our Facebook photo competition sponsored by www.photokuva, due to be announced this week has been postponed. The new deadline for the competition is Friday 31.1.2014.

There is a slight change in the procedure: now all artworks are welcomed (photos, drawings, illustrations‌) and the theme is open, i.e. there is no theme just anything you like. Simply send you entry via e-mail to: insider@kyamk.fi. Entries will be judged by the Insider editorial team and the winner will be place on our Art Page in issue 16. Judges decision is final. By sending in your entry you are stating that you are the author of the work and you give Insider the right to publish it.

PROFILE

Q: Introduce yourelf to those who don’t know you yet.

A: My name is Jori Pölkki, age 27 (laughs). No, honestly I’m a bit older than that.

Q: Could you tell about your education?

A: I’m a Master of Arts, PWSF i TV from a film school in Poland. I got my education there, started in the beginning of the ’90’s and came back to Finland around the year ’95.

Q: What is your job here in KyAMK? A: I’m a teamleader for media and design students. I’m also senior lecturer.

Q: What other jobs have you done in media sector?

A: Oh well... What haven’t I done? Before I went to Poland I did stage lightning for instance in Helsinki city theatre, national theatre, fashions shows and rock concerts, etc. I also did some multi-camera recordings for theatres and Aira Samulin. In and after school I’ve done documentaries and TV-work, fiction I haven’t done since school.

I have teached in University of Lapland, Mediakylpylä in Helsinki and held some workshops abroad. I was a chairman in Espoos Art and Information technology centre (CARTES) and then I have done media art and commercials. Among other things.

Q: Well, that’s quite a CV! What about your free time hobbies? Or have you had time for anything else than school lately?

A: This year school work has taken a lot of my time, but of course I have hobbies. Photography is something I’ve done for long and some of my pictures have been published. I’ve been sailing since I was a child and done regatta since I was 14. While I was in Poland I had to put that on hold but now I’ve started again. Even gained 2nd place in Finland-Estonia folkboat cap. I play badminton and renovate my house.

Q: And a couple of fun facts to wrap this up?

A: I’ve sat on top of James Browns head. Not literally of course, approximately 5 meters abowe. I also speak quite fluent Polish.

So the movie starts with this successful, wealthy stockbroker Jordan Belfort (Leonardo DiCaprio) in his car telling us about his life. He is telling the story how he managed to afford his expensive car, his drug preferences and his hookers. And the whole time sitting in the audience you keep thinking: “Okay, but what happened next? This would not be a Martin Scorsese movie if the guy winds up happy in his car with his wife busy below his waist-line and not having learned any kind of lifechanging lesson by the end of the movie.” Also he is a stockbroker so you just want to see him fail. You can almost physically feel the tingling of malicious joy when the FBI gets mentioned for the first time and this is also the point where it gets interesting. Even after two hours of film you are still not sure what it will be that sends his company (or even his life) to hell: his second wife, his passion for driving all kinds of vehicles while under the influence of various drugs, the drugs, his friends ratting him out to the FBI, FBI all by themselves, a sinking ship (literally) or maybe something as trivial as an STD. Even though I felt the movie was very entertaining, it was the first time I actually went online to find out just how far from the truth they were. Turns out, while the people making this movie happen, certainly over-did it in some regards, the yacht capsizing actually did happen, just like the intoxicated driving incident.

I would also warmly recommend this movie to every business student out there. Somewhere between the R-rated scenes you might find a valuable history lesson about how the economy used to work.

It was great movie through and through, it is just too bad that the odds that Leonardo DiCaprio will actually win an Oscar for his outstanding performance are not in his favour.
