EDITORIAL

As another academic year for Insider draws to a close, it is time to reflect on the past year and upcoming changes for the next. Our special profile this week looks at some of the questions that have been asked by those profiled in previous issues. Last week’s interview with our Rector also gave a lot of information about some changes happening in the university, and the new organisation next year. One thing he mentioned was about the tuition Hugh Clack fees for non-EU students coming in Editor in Chief the autumn 2017. Remember, this is only for new students starting from then, it will not affect current students. The actual fee itself has not yet been finally decided, but will probably be several thousand Euro per year. As far as new students are concerned, last week FINNIPS entrance examinations for the English programmes were being held around the world. Colleagues were travelling to far off destinations such as Vietnam, Nepal, USA, etc. Personally, I was in London, where we had two days of exams but not so many applicants. However, it was interesting to see the interest in Finland. Something that was quite strange was the fact that the exams had been arranged at the Finnish Church in London. Listening to Finnish being spoken there and speaking Finnish to the employees felt quite surreal. It is quite a home away from home for Finns, and they have regular meetings. As there is also accommodation available, it would make a nice base for Finns visiting London. This week in Finland, we also have the entrance examinations. By the time you are reading this, the exams will have been taken here in Kouvola for our International Business programme. Let’s hope that there were good candidates here also, and good luck to all those that join us at Kyamk next autumn. Talking about next autumn, Insider will continue to bring you news and articles from this university and other related matters, and we also hope to make closer cooperation with Mikkeli and start bringing you similar content relating to studies and life there. From January 2017 Insider will of course represent the university as a whole (Xamk) no longer Kyamk. For myself, I want to thank the editorial team for their continued efforts this past year, and for the excellent contributions by new members of the team. Insider has continued to develop especially with our online offerings and will continue to do so. Have a great summer and see you in the autumn.

FAVOURITE QUOTES “It isn’t pre-martial sex if you never get married.” “It is my greatest wish to time travel to the future and watch historically inaccurate period dramas about the early 2000s.” “If a mushroom gets mouldy in the fridge, is it cannibalism?” “If your absence never affected them, your presence never mattered.” “The conclusion of an essay is essentially a TL;DR”

#SHIP

The next big thing - #ship The Startup Festival Text by: Momal Mushtaq | Photos by: Patteri

We live in the days of increasing unemployment where the existence of entrepreneurship is somewhat a small patch of absolute greenness endlessly engulfed by barrenness. This may sound hopeless and may present a very gloomy picture but I say so to cite the significance of entrepreneurship in our schools today – an employment strategy that can lead to overall economic self-sufficiency. Entrepreneurship seeks to empower people, particularly youth, to create new job opportunities while following their passion. It prepares them to find and do the work they love; take risks yet be responsible, exercise leadership and gain invaluable interpersonal skills along the way. The entrepreneurial movement is slowly gaining momentum with the growth of a supportive environment to flourish new businesses. Finland is no differ-

ent. One such initiative is #ship The Startup Festival, apparently the biggest of its kind in South East Finland. It is basically a twoday event which brings together mentors, investors and the next generation of entrepreneurs from Finland and beyond. #ship is organized annually by Patteri Entrepreneurship Society, the student-run organization of Kymenlaakso University of Applied Sciences (KyUAS). This year’s main sponsor is Google and event partners include Cursor Oy, Kouvola Innovation Oy, City of Kotka and KyUAS. #ship 2016 will be held on July 27 & 28th, during Finland’s biggest outdoor music festival called Kotka Maritime Festival (Kotkan Meripäivät in Finnish). With 21 teams in semifinals, #ship 2015 involved every summer program from Finnish entrepreneurship societies. This year, 40 teams are expected to compete for €5000

euros in the Pitch Captain -competition. The teams will be offered an opportunity to interact with global mentors through #ship’s Mentor Track -program and other entrepreneurial champions at the Networking Cruise and Evening Gala. But, that won’t be the end of road. Even after the event, participants will be offered support to drive ideas forward; and scale them to implementation. #ship 2016 is the next big thing with regards to developing a strong startup eco-system within Kymenlaakso region. It is about making things happen; reaching new horizons and turning your dreams into reality. If you want to experience something different and exciting this summer, #ship is the place to be at. For more information about the event, visit: www.shipfestival.org Subscribe to #ship’s newsletter at: http://eepurl.com/bPwn5L

Kyamk Staff

By: Frank van de Voorde

Can you briefly introduce yourself?

Spring, summer and autumn weather are mostly nice, but cold, windy winter weather is terrible. During winter I wish I was a part of the Moomins family and I could just hibernate.

My name is Marja-Liisa Neuvonen-Rauhala and work as a director of education at the international business unit. I am a work-oriented person, interested in higher education and its research and development. Equality, freedom and sisterhood are important values to me, that’s why I am a Zontian. Reading and gardening are my hobbies.

Mi Nguyen: What are your future plans? I have some dreams to be fulfilled. Next I will apply for a job of mine in Xamk.

Prakash Neaupane: What do you like and dislike about living and working in Kouvola and KyAMK? Kouvola is a nice size town to work and to network with everybody you need to. Kouvola centre is easy to move around by walking. Kouvola is robust and modern. When I first came to work in Kyamk I felt that I came home. I still enjoy working at the Kasarminmäki Campus, students and staff are great.

Nabin Ghimire: Who is your favourite staff member and why?

happy although my children are living far away, my daughter in Joensuu and my son in London. I wonder how mothers did without Skype earlier. Julia Rässa: Why are you such a good painter?

Hanni Hätinen: What makes you happy in life?

Perhaps, because I have practiced it a lot. I have painted walls, window frames, tables, chairs etc. Practice makes you a master, I think. It also helps, if you have an idea and take advice from more experienced painters. Painting requires also patience, and it makes it challenging. Many skills need hard training.

I am happy when the sun is shining, then everything is possible – also at work. My family makes me

Olli Simanainen: What do you like about the weather in Finland?

At the moment I am annoyed with timetables of trains. Early morning shifts are taken away. It makes it hard to be early in the mornings at the Kasarminmäki Campus.

Everybody is important and my favourite when doing her/his best for our mission. Anastasija Jernova: Which country would you choose for work and for living in the future, and why? Spain definitely, it is a diverse country, the weather is nice and it would be good for my husband. Professionally I think that there are a lot of possibilities, though times are hard now. Meri Ketonen: If you would have to learn one skill, what would it be? Spanish language. Is there anything you would like to add? Cheerful May Day!

VAPPU

What happens during 30.4-1.5 in Finland and why? By: Karollina Niemi

What is this Finnish party all about? For some Finns Vappu is the only time of the year when they’re able to speak Swedish. You can hear Finns saying stuff like “Klara Vappen, bara vatten” for some unknown reasons. Maybe it is because this is probably the only party in Finland, which is even remotely happy. You can’t probably be truly happy if you only speak depressing Finnish. We don’t celebrate Vappu in Finland just to praise our Swedish-skills. It is actually a celebration of workers and students. The actual Vappu-day is on the 1st of May. However students also go out already on the 30th of April and make it a two-day-party.

What happens on the 30th of April? The last day of April, the Vappu

Eve, is the day when the celebrations start. This is when the student union puts a graduation cap on a statue. This tradition started back in 1909 in Helsinki, where students put the gap on the statue without a permission. Nowadays it happens in every student city and it is kind of a “must see” event. Usually there also are some speeches and maybe even singing. Most of the traditions are somewhat confusing to explain to foreigners, but that has to be one of the weirdest.

masks, people love wearing their student overalls to celebrate student life.

What are the Vappu-essentials?

Like in any good party, food plays a big role also in Vappu. For some reason Finns tend to eat potato salad and frankfurters in every party, and Vappu is no different. However there are some specific drinks are food and drinks that we only have during Vappu. We have an example of one of the Vappu treats here, Sima.

Forget sophisticated little black dresses because this party is a messy one. If you have graduated from Finnish high school, you are probably wearing your cap. If you don’t have that, there’s no need to be ashamed. Just hide your face with a mask or maybe wear a wig. Other than the cap or funny

If you wish to decorate your place to make it look like Vappu exploded there, head to your closest supermarket. Vappu is all about different colours, which is why you should get loads of balloons and paper streamer. Also, if you feel like you want to let your inner cheerleader out, it is not abnormal to buy colourful pompoms this time of the year.

Sima Ingredients • • • • • •

5 l water 350 g sugar 350 g brown sugar 2 lemons Dab of yeast Few raisins

1. Wash the lemons and peel the yellow skin. 2. Peel the white part of the skin and dice the pulp. 3. Put the yellow skin, the pulp and the sugar into a bowl, a bucket or a barrel. Whatever tickles your fancy, really. 4. Boil half of the water and pour it into the bowl. Mix them up and let it sit still for a while. 5. Add the other half of the water into the bowl. Mix.

6. Wait until the mixture is about room-temperature and add the yeast. 7. Now it’s the best part: leave the mixture sit still for a day or two. 8. After a day or two, filter the mixture into bottles. Drop few raisins and about a teaspoon of sugar for each bottle. 9. When the drink is all bottled up, put the bottles into a fridge. 10. After a few days the raisins float on the surface. This is when the Sima is ready, congratulations! Did you know that Finns are divided into the people who drink their sima with the raisins and the ones who think that they’re just disgusting?

That’s it? I want to paint you a picture: It’s the first of May. You are now lying in the bed next to your dirty graduation gap, thinking “I’m so lucky that Vappu takes place only once a year.” You are probably still in your overalls asking yourself, why you didn’t take them off when you got home... And most importantly, is this even your home. No worries! Put that cap back on and head out to the traditional Vappu picnic. In big student cities, students and graduates head out to enjoy the spring weather and have a picnic. If you don’t want to stand out, you should pack some Vappu essentials with you: Sima, sugar-coated doughnuts, funnel cake, loads of other food and even if we, as a student magazine, can’t say this seriously bring a bottle of sparkling wine with you... or two.

MUSIC REVIEW

DEFTONES: GORE By: Roope Sorvo

Genre Alternative Metal Experimental Rock Producer Matt Hyde Deftones Released April 8, 2016 Rating

Originally associated with the alternative and nu metal movements of the turn of the millennium, Deftones quickly grew out of the box in which they were placed by the critics. While they have many aesthetic similarities with the genre, the band was and still is far more ambitious and inventive in their sound than any of their contemporaries ever dared to be. Well, excluding 2010’s Linkin Park, but how successful that ambition was in their case is still up to debate. However, when compared against other Deftones discography, their eighth studio album Gore falls to the less imaginative and inventive side. This is a shame, since there is a lot of potential on the album. Clearly frontman Chino Moreno’s recent work with his side project Crosses has rubbed off on the

record, as the album is much more electronic in nature than the previous Deftones records. Many songs like “Hearts/Wires”, “Xenon” or the title track feature atmospheric keyboard interludes, which brings to mind the more experimental and dreamy sound of their 2006 album Saturday Night Wrist. Despite all of these theoretical changes in their sound Gore sounds like Deftones at their most by-the-book. There’s the heavier segment where Moreno screams his way through his lines on top of the more crunchier riffs; there’s the part where he steps into the fragile and vulnerable shoes while the band creates this ethereal, almost serene soundscape; there’s the oddball time signature; there’s the shoegaze-inspired wall of guitar with the chord buried somewhere under all the distortion. All of this have been experienced and heard before on previous Deftones records, and the coating of synthesizers does about as good work in disguising this as slapping Groucho glasses on the album cover. For a brief moment at the beginning of “Pittura Infamante” the guitar work of Stephen Carpenter sounds suspiciously like Iron Maiden, which in the context of things sounds refreshing. When the most refreshing parts of your record is a possibly accidental, ten seconds long pastiche of a 40 year old band, you know you’ve got a problem. Even with the added electronic elements Gore has a bit of an identity problem amongst the Deftones discography: it just doesn’t feel like it brings anything on the table that we haven’t already seen from the band. The addition of the synths feels largely superficial, and mixes things around roughly as much it would do if I decided to write this review using a different font. This makes Gore a competent, but incredibly standard Deftones album.

On their 2013 record Heartthrob the previous indie darlings Tegan and Sara shed their guitar-oriented folk sound in favour of a more modern, electronic approach. While this made many older fans grab their torches and pitchforks, the change catapulted the duo into mainstream success. The album debuted at #3 on the Billboard charts and the lead single “Closer” was practically inescapable.

Bat For Lashes combines electronic music with traditional baroque elements, forming a dramatic, operatic experience. Singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Natasha Khan walks in the footsteps of Kate Bush, Siouxsie Sioux and Tori Amos. Two of her earlier albums have been nominated for Mercury Prize, and her previous record The Haunted Man was in my opinion hands down the best album of 2012.

After three years of silence, apart from performing “Everything is Awesome!” for The Lego Movie, the duo announced the new album Love You To Death in November 2015. Right now you can listen to the two promotional singles: “U-Turn” continues largely on the same road as Heartthrob, while “Boyfriend” has a bit more eighties vibe in its synthpop.

In February, Khan revealed that The Bride, the follow-up for The Haunted Man, would be released in July. Two tracks are now available for listening: the harp-driven intro “I Do”, and the slow, unnerving “In God’s House”, with both promising The Bride to be Bat For Lashes as its best.

After the slightly overgrown and incoherent Opposites the band initially announced their seventh studio album in 2014. However, they decided to take a “year off” to avoid overstaying their welcome, eventually announcing the release date in March 2016. During this time the band streamlined their sound, citing surprising influences such as A$AP Rocky and John Waters. The lead single “Wolves of Winter”, while no means simplistic, gives a little taste of the slightly more electronic, straightforward approach to be expected from Ellipsis.

Published

This trilogy was made in the form of graphic novel, which was a pretty new form at the time it was released. It’s mostly a normal novel, but then it’ll suddenly split into 3 or 4 pages of graphic novel illustrations.

One of Diana Wynne Jones’ most memorable and irresistible characters is Howl, an bizzare and isolated wizard who whirled around the land of Ingary in a moving castle. And while Howl was not the main character of the “World of Howl” trilogy, he was the vital character that links the three books together -- “Howl’s Moving Castle,” “Castle in the Air” and “House of Many Ways.” In “Howl’s Moving Castle,” a misunderstanding resulted in the ordinary Sophie Hatter, an owner of a hat shop, being turned into an old lady by the wicked Witch of the Waste. Finding old age surprisingly liberating, she wandered away from her hat shop, and became the cleaning lady for Howl, who lived in the moving castle with his fire demon Calcifer. Calcifer made a deal with Sophie: if she could break the contract between him and Howl, he would restore her youth. The catch was, neither he nor Howl could tell her WHAT the contract was.

2009-???

Everyone’s heard the rumors. Call Tall Jake and if you say the right words and have the right stuff, he’ll take you to Malice, a world that exists inside a horrifying comic book. A place that you can only enter but can never escape. Seth and Kady think it was all a silly myth. However, the story began when their friend, Luke, disappeared and everyone thought that he ran away from home. Only Seth knew Luke wasn’t running away but Tall Jake had taken him away. Seth and his friend, Kady, looked for clues and slowly they started to get more results, leading them into to more trouble than they could imagine.

MOVIE REVIEW

HARDCORE HENRY By: Sarah Rosenthal era-work is carried out flawlessly. But the script will offend even viewers with single-digit IQs. The film is as stupid, repetitive and mindless as... well, a bad video game. It is also grotesquely violent. The action is non-stop, but utterly suspenseless. Henry is virtually indestructible, so there is no sense of danger or physical impact to any of his adventures. The climactic fight, where he single-handedly defeats dozens of superior robot-soldiers, hits a new low in stupidity, tastelessness, and simply not knowing when to quit.

Genre Action, Adventure, SciFi Director Ilya Naishuller Starring Sharlto Copley Rating A first-person action film from the eyes of Henry, who’s resurrected from death with no memory.
