NOWHERE TO BE FOUND

Khue Do

Spring is here by chance. The weather is getting warmer and sun stays much longer with us. It is ironic that the sun shines too early that these days, its presence is quite annoying since it’s hard to stay in bed as long as usual. Just one more month left until summer holiday. Yay? Urgh? Or meh?

Summer for some people is days on the beach getting tanned and going to joyful festivals with friends and beloved ones. For some other, summer is full of work: internship, part-time job, etc. And for the remaining part of people, summer is panic. Panic because summer job and internship are cannot be found, panic because having no idea where to spend summer, and panic because this one last month might be the last time to see our friends at school. So, let’s just chill and not yet be panic! Please make this one last month awesome because you never know what will happen next. Start updating events nearby and start forcing all your friends to go and have fun there with you. Last week, the Insider team and some of the exchange students went to the World Pillow Fight event in Helsinki. Everyone brought pillows together with a furious attitude and it was literally a fight. People from different generations took part in the fight and that is a one-of-a-kind event in which you can hit strangers freely without any apologies needed. Also, this week’s Insider covers the remaining part of the interview with the owners of Kaslink Foods Oy and Kouvolan Lakritsi Oy. The simple but delicious recipe this week from Karoliina would definitely bright up your day. What else more do we have in Insider this week? Go get an Insider and answer yourself now!

start-up companies are interested in internationalization.

According to the research of CIMO, many of the foreign degree students would like to stay and find employment in Finland after graduation. The problem, however, is that companies interested in recruiting foreign students and foreign graduates don’t meet each other in the same way as Finnish students are met.

2.incorporate and entrench the approach into internship guidance as well as part of the student and alumni services

At the same time, Finland is undergoing a structural change in the working life. It is therefore of utmost importance to increase the competitiveness and growth, to which Finland needs all the available know-how and competencies that we have in the country. Our school has now launched a national-wide project called “KILKAS” (Kilpailukykyä ja kasvua ulkomaalaisten ammattikorkeakouluopiskelijoiden työllisyyden edistämisestä) to tackle this problem. This project aims to promote the employment of foreign UAS students by developing support, guidance and forms for instance for internship and thesis together with business, and by developing a working model to increase foreign students’ working life competence from the point of view of the Finnish labor market, raising the prospect of competitiveness and growth. In particular, the

PROFILE

2nd year International Marketing Student By: Frank van de Voorde What specifically made you choose for KyAMK?

I don’t know. I think right now there is a good balance. They are so difficult to arrange, combining all the schedules to arrange meetings. It is really hard but I think it is okay.

Actually, my mother. I was at home without a job and just hanging out with friends every day. She told me to sign up for school and business would be good because you can go anywhere from there.

Where do you see yourself five years from now? Hopefully working abroad. In a job that lets me be creative and working with different kinds of people. One thing I hope also is that the work wouldn’t be the same thing every day. The same work every day is just not my thing.

I know you are very busy besides your studies. Can you talk a little bit about that? I am the secretary of the Patteri board and for now it has been pretty busy. We arrange some events like for instance the stage event at Metsola campus in Kotka, where I got to be one of the hosts. That was pretty cool. I am also a marketing tutor (and former international tutor). It is pretty easy to combine because I can decide the events I want to go to. So I don’t get too busy but I also have so much school stuff going on like an event management course. So much events to arrange. Do you still have time for some hobbies? Photography. I also like painting if I have time but lately I haven’t really had much time for that. Painting with watercolours is really nice. Oh, and yes I like to go to flea markets and second hand stores. Do you have classes together with International Business students and if not would you like to have those? Not right now but I would like that. It would be really cool. For example that English course that Slaveya teaches. She was talking that we should have it together with IB students because it is the same course. It is a really good

Who is Meri Ketonen? Meri is from Finland and she is a 20 year old, second year, International Marketing (Kansainvälinen Markkinointi) student who has a vocational degree as a media-assistant.

You have done this media assistant vocational study. How has it helped you in your marketing studies here? It definitely did help. I haven’t had any classes with InDesign etcetera and it would be good to do something again but that is where Patteri comes in. I can do those things there and keep up with it. Anastasija, who previously worked at the info, wanted to ask you: ‘What would be your future country to live and work in?’

What kind of advice would you like to give to foreigners who come to study in Finland?

I don’t know. Finland is pretty good because for the future if I think about where I would want to raise my children then Finland is definitely the place where I would want to raise them. I also would really want to live in another country before that though. Probably a European country but I don’t have any specific one in mind.

Be on time! That is really the most important thing.

What would you like to ask from the next person?

How do you feel about team work? Would you like to see more of it? Or less?

If you would have to learn one skill, what would it be?

idea.

BUSINESS ADVICE Interview Part 1I

By: Frank van de Voorde

In Insider issue 21 we published the first part of the interview with Matti Kukkonen director and owner of Kaslink Foods Oy and Timo Nisula owner of Kouvolan Lakritsi Oy. Due to length of the interview it was split up in two parts. This is the final part of that interview. So your company is actively looking for sustainable options and ethical sourcing etcetera?

Do you think that in the future there will be more ecological products in your company and will you also market them as a truly ecological choice?

world we have to start thinking about what we are doing. I know the attitude of our customers hasn’t changed much in the past few years but it is changing slowly. When we export to Denmark, they are already talking about ecological liquorice but still in 99.9% of the cases it doesn’t matter. Also here in Finland if you go with ecological products the process is so difficult; an army of authorities will come knocking on your door checking everything and that is going to cost a hell of a lot of money. Customers think that biological products are okay and willing to pay 20% more but if we double or triple the price we won’t have any customers left. Another problem is that we can’t get all the ingredients; sugar is easy and wheat is okay but the crop quality can be whatever and our processes can’t handle that. The quality varies simply too much.

TN: Of course. It is coming. Also if you think about the whole

Finland isn’t doing economically so well and that is partly due

TN: I wouldn’t say actively but of course we are looking. The change is certain. If you don’t then you don’t have any future. It is also all these eco things. Here in Finland we still think we don’t need these bio products but it is coming and it is totally different in Germany. We still don’t act enough like that. I think the normal Finn thinks very green but doesn’t act very green. MK: We are actually in the process of acquiring an ecolabel on our packaging as we want to start using renewable energy. We will be using biogas.

to situation with Russia. How has that affected your company? TN: Not a lot. We grew last year by 12% and the normal market here grows while the Russian market went down by 3%. We don’t have that kind of problems that Valio has. We have always had problems with Russian business. They can stop it tomorrow, and open it again next week. We don’t sell anything anymore in Russia. The problem is also they used to have black cough medicine there which was terrible and now they hate everything black. The elderly remember, and so liquorice isn’t popular there. MK: We didn’t really have a direct influence from the Russian trade bans but the whole country, continent, is currently confused as we are not able to export animal based products including milk to Russia. The whole of Europe and Finland are actually drowning in milk currently. That means that

COVER STORY

prices are extremely low for the farmers. Excess milk gets turned into butter and powder form because it can be preserved for a longer time but that is also the cheapest possible price you can get. Already more than a year ago you started selling your own brand, Maire. What have you learned from this process of marketing your brand? MK: It’s a constant process of learning because we didn’t do marketing in the beginning. We have only been producing products for our customers and only concentrating on the manufacturing part. It is still only really small and because it is a local product it has been easy to get shelf space in local supermarkets. There are plans in the future to also become a strong brand company besides being a contract manufacturer. You aren’t afraid that your brand cannibalizes your other

milk based products? MK: No, you just have to think about how you will do it. Of course there is a danger when the products are the same or similar but you just have to think your way through. I know many dairy companies in Europe that have their own brand but now are also producing private label. I mean you have to, the retailers have all the power and they only care about the price. Of course they have specifications you must meet but there is the temptation to sometimes compromise with the quality because they are only looking at the price. It is very brutal. What kind of advice would you give to someone who wants to start a business in Finland? TN: If you have a good idea and nine of your ten friends say this is bulls### then go for it but if nine of your friends tell you it is a fantastic idea then don’t do it.

6

Because nine out of ten don’t understand nothing about anything. If everyone would listen to everyone else we wouldn’t have Apple now or Microsoft. These people who believe in themselves, and our passionate and love what they do and have a little bit of luck, they are going to be successful. That’s key issue: you have to believe in yourself. What is the most important function in a company? TN: Boring! The most important is to make products or provide services that somebody wants. Don’t concentrate on the budget but concentrate on the business and your consumer. Understand what the consumer needs and then you fulfil that need. I have never understood what the consumer wants and how they think but I know something: take your time and test. You don’t die when you try but if you don’t try you might die.

The Hunger Games Catching Fire Mockingjay

Divergent Insurgent Allegiant

The 5th Wave The Infinite Sea The Last Star

This triology is also about an alternative universe. Inside the country Panem, the city Capitol ruled and enslaved the other 12 cities. Every year, in order to spread fear and hopelessness, the Capitol set up the “Hunger Game” in which randomly-chosen citizens from 12 cities would have to fight and killing each other to survive. Katniss Everdeen was a 16-year-old girl from District 12 who volunteered for the 74th Hunger Games after her 12-yearold sister Primrose Everdeen was picked for reaping. She not only survived the games but also gradually become the figure of a revolution which would free the 12 cities from the Capitol... unfairness.

The Divergent Triology tells a story which took place in an alternative universe where humans were devided into 5 different groups according to their characteristics: Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), Erudite (the intelligent), Abnegation (the selfless), and Candor (the honest). However, there was another group, the Divergent, who owns more than one characteristics listed above. The Divergents, in others’ opinions, are hard to control and will endanger the rulling systems. Thus, if found, Divergents will be murdered. The main heroin of this triology, along with her fellow Divergents, strived to conceal their true nature. Along the way, they also discovered the truth that had been hiden from all the citizens...

After the 1st wave, only darkness remains. After the 2nd, only the lucky escape. And after the 3rd, only the unlucky survive. After the 4th wave, only one rule applies: trust no one. Now, it’s the dawn of the 5th wave, and on a lonely stretch of highway, Cassie runs from Them. The beings who only look human, who roam the countryside killing anyone they see. Who have scattered Earth’s last survivors. To stay alone is to stay alive, Cassie believes, until she meets Evan Walker. Beguiling and mysterious, Evan Walker may be Cassie’s only hope for rescuing her brother-or even saving herself. But Cassie must choose: between trust and despair, between defiance and surrender, between life and death. To give up or to get up.

RECIPE

SUPER CHEESY GARLIC BREAD

8

By: Karoliina Niemi

As some random wise man said in the internet: “FriEND, bestfriEND, boyfriEND, girlfriEND, garlic bread... Only garlic bread has no END. Garlic bread will stay by your side forever.” Inspired by these romantic words, here is the ultimate garlic bread to share with your friends. Ingredients • Ciabatta • 80 g butter • 2 garlic cloves • Salt • Pepper • 1 teaspoon Greek spice mix • 300g cheese

Preheat the oven to 220 degrees. Cut the ciabatta, first lengthwise and then width wise. Make sure you don’t cut through the bottom crust. Melt the butter in the microwave and mix it with salt, pepper, Greek spice mix and of course the garlic. Drizzle the mixture all over the bread. Put the cheese slices between the cuts. To make it extra cheesy, add also some grated cheese. Wrap the stuffed ciabatta in foil and bake it for 15minutes. Unwrap the bread, add some more cheese and bake it about 7 more minutes. Your extremely cheesy and buttery garlic bread should be now ready. Serve it for example with homemade salsa or avocado dip.

MUSIC REVIEW

THE JOY FORMIDABLE Hitch

By: Roope Sorvo

Genre Alternative Rock / Shoegazing Producer The Joy Formidable Released March 25, 2016 Rating The Welsh trio The Joy Formidable has a history of combining gritty grunge, shoegazing drone and infectious stadium anthem hooks. Both of their previous albums were studies in the different extremes of their sound: the debut The Big Roar was, as the name implies, a bit too noisy and drowned in distortion for its own good; the follow-up Wolf’s Law went to the other end of the pool with almost overproduced, sleek and orchestral production. Now, on their third album Hitch the trio has seemingly found the balance between the gleam and the grime. It’s not as if the Joy Formidable was trying to reinvent the wheel in any shape or form. The major

building blocks are still the old familiar ones: the wall-of-distortion guitars, the energetic drumming, singer Ritzy Bryan’s instantly recognizable voice. These are all things that have been heard before, but now it seems that the Joy has been seamlessly merged with the Formidable, while simultaneously trimming some the most superfluous frills. The catchy “Radio of Lips” and the mid-tempo lead single “The Last Thing On My Mind” both demonstrate the best of both worlds of the trio’s discography, with rough production and occasional moments of pristine clarity complimenting each other. Unfortunately the otherwise great tracks slightly overstay their welcome, as if the band was not quite sure how to end the tracks, so they went with the Return of the King route and used them all. One of the album highlights is the almost balladlike “The Brook”, which combines vaguely oriental plucking instruments with otherwise Western-themed soundscape. “Blowing Fire” features one of their simplest and catchiest riffs, and the album closer “Don’t Let Me Know” starts off a soothing ballad before growing into synth-laden post-rock crescendo. As the time-tried cliché goes, sometimes the third time indeed is the charm. After experimenting with different approaches on their two previous albums The Joy Formidable manage to fruitfully refine their sound into a concise, functional whole. This makes Hitch a natural extension of their previous work and their best album yet.

MOVIE REVIEW

THE 5TH WAVE We fight back.

By: Sarah Rosenthal ies from the book trilogy.

Genre Action, Adventure, SciFi Director J Blakeson Starring Chloë Grace Moretz Nick Robinson Alex Roe Rating Four waves of increasingly deadly attacks have left most of Earth in ruin. Against a backdrop of fear and distrust, Cassie is on the run, desperately trying to save her younger brother. As she prepares for the inevitable and lethal fifth wave, Cassie teams up with a young man who may become her final hope - if she can only trust him. As somebody who absolutely loves SciFi movies I was surprised that I had never even heard of this movie before even though it had been coming for almost two years now as the first book adaptation of a Rick Yancey movie and the potential for follow-up mov-

The movie starts of quite strong despite it being yet another apocalypse, end of the world, dystopian future movies. Thankfully it does not include Zombies this time, or vampires for that matter. It fits right in with movie series’ such as the Divergent series, The Hunger Games and The Maze Runner movies. While Chloë Grace Moretz is possibly the least annoying choice to play a teen hero character the movie slowly decreases in intensity and excitement and finishes of rather unsatisfyingly. That may have to do with the fact that there will most likely be a second and third part to it. What I liked about it was the creative way the alien invasion took place. It was a well thought out plan to rid the planet of its current predominant, more or less intelligent species without harming it too much in order for it to be ready for recolonisation by the the alien invaders. Disappointing was the fact (and that is mostly my fault for watching pretty much every SciFi movie out there) that none of it was actually overly inventive on the both the authors side and the those in charge of adapting the book to script. All of those scenarios were done in one form or another in various franchises over the past decades on both the big screen and the small screen. Then again, it might be quite difficult to make an innovative, never-seen-before movie about something that has been reinvented over and over again. Hopes are that the upcoming movies are going to tie up loose ends and bring new plot twists to the table.
