GUEST ARTICLE
GO EAST YOUNG (WO)MALE! Kirsi’s and Sara’s Adventures in China Part 7 Text by: Kirsi Rouhiainen Photos by: Kirsi Rouhiainen & Sara Czabai
So let’s finish this small introductory article series with a conclusion why each and every one should travel to China at least once in a lifetime. First of all, it is an ancient, fascinating and startling culture which affects our daily life in many ways. Inventions made in China include gunpowder, papermaking, printing and compass. Just look around and you will most definitely see various products you use on daily basis which were manufactured and made in China. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to see once in a lifetime a factory where your H&M bra was manufactured?
And to be honest, Chinese are tough negotiators. That’s why especially Finns have a lot to learn from their sales tactics. Moreover, just take a look at Africa and see how Chinese investors are rapidly moving there and you will for sure know that some vast global changes are on their way. Also, there are many interesting Chinese franchising chains that will enter the global marketplace very soon. Chinese culture, movies, art and music have only recently started their internationalization. For instance multi-artist Ai Weiwei has become a phenomenon in the west and I expect other Chinese cultural phenomena to take place
very soon. I also recommend that you’d pay a visit to one of the Chinese megalopolis to experience the amount of cars, mopeds, people and pollution. After that experience, you certainly respect the space, clear skies and air quality in Finland, not to mention the smooth traffic in Kouvola. In case you are not able to travel to China right now, why don’t you talk to some of our Chinese students at Kyamk. I’m sure they will be more than delighted to tell you more about their country and it’s culture.

Infodesk Assisstant By: Frank van de Voorde
At your work you need to use some Finnish. Do you find the language difficult?
was quite difficult at first but I got used to it quite quickly. Asian students might be a bit more difficult at times because they speak often very quietly but I got used to it when I was here on exchange because many of my classmates were Asian.
In the beginning I thought I would never ever learn it because it is completely different from my native languages. I have two mother languages: Russian and Latvian. I basically speak already three languages so it is not really a problem. In the beginning as I said it was a bit difficult but now when I have an opportunity to speak some Finnish it becomes easier day after day. Sometimes it is a total mess in my head because I think in four languages.
What are the biggest differences between Latvia and Finland?
What are your hobbies? When I lived in Latvia my only hobby was my job because it was bartending. I really loved my job. When I came here in Finland at first I didn’t really find anything I was passionate about. I did try to do some things not to be bored because everyone knows Finland is awfully quiet. If I would have the opportunity I would love to start traveling more and maybe make some handcrafted stuff. I find that interesting and I can use it to decorate my flat. I also really love walking. Just admiring the view and seeing the beautiful nature. Now my main hobby is learning Finnish! I always enjoy learning new languages. Here at the info you meet a lot of foreign students. Do you have any problems communicating with them? Actually, no. I have been studying English for a very long time. I have met a lot of people from a lot of different countries and I get used to their different accents quite easily. When I started working as a guide in Riga and there were many British groups with many different accents and that
Who is Anastasija Jernova? Anastasija Jernova is originally from Latvia but she has lived in Finland for about four years. At the time of publishing this profile she no longer works for KyAMK. Anastasija did her exchange studies here in KyAMK and also had to opportunity to study international business logistics in Kotka. Her major back in Latvia was board and shipping management.
People! We have a totally different mentality. We are more similar to Russians because we used to be part of the Soviet Union. Finns are more conservative maybe. We are completely different. The culture stuff that is; the food, activities and hobbies. Sports and TV are basically the same everywhere but it is more the way we do things. Same with business and marketing. They are completely different and also job life is totally different in Latvia. I also think we are much more outgoing that Finns. What about similarities? I don’t really know. We are from the same area; the Baltic Sea region. I can’t really think of anything specific right now. Nabin wanted to ask you who is your favourite staff member here in KyAMK? I actually really cannot answer that. Basically everyone here is very helpful and nice. Everyone is very interesting as they all have different kind of jobs. So I can’t really decide, they all are very nice. What would you like to ask from the next person? Which country would he or she choose for work and for living in the future, and why?

COVER STORY
STARTUP HACKATHON with Patteri
By: Insider Staff who went to the event
“What is a hackathon? Do I need to hack anything there?” These questions are much familiar to me during the Starpabs event promotours, which were organized in both Kasarminmäki and Metsola campuses 1 week before the hackathon. In order to answer, let’s have a look at when and what was happening in the official event last week. In total, approximately 100 people participated in this event that took place in Puhjonranta course center in Valkeala, Finland. The Starpabs hackathon is a 24-hour challenge, in which participants need to create, develop and pitch an idea based on the given topic. However, the whole event lasted for 2 days since there is additional time needed for the transportation and the final pitching stage. So on 20 March in the evening at 6pm, all the participants from Kyamk (Finland), Tallinn University (Estonia) and Stockholm School of Economics (Latvia) arrived. After the registration, there were team-building sessions that helped everyone get to know each other better and form groups. On Monday 21 March, “Heartbeat” is announced to be the main topic and the hackathon is officially started. All the teams were excited and working really hard on their ideas. And finally on Tuesday 22 March at 10am, all the brilliant ideas were pitched in such diverse ways, from story telling to demonstrations, from
PowerPoint slides to lively videos. So lastly, what is the hackathon in your opinion? From an organizer’s point of view, it is a great way for strangers from different nationalities, backgrounds and fields of study to network, to find and work with their perfect matches in order to ignite their burning desires for innovative creations.
er, just a week before the actual event, I volunteered to become one of the staff members and that was absolutely not a wrong decision. During those 3 days, I got to know students and professors from Latvia and Estonia, all of whom were so funny, so innovative and full of ideas.
for more information.
Of course as an staff member, I had to make sure that every participants were having a great time and were closely following the schedule. The work did not run smoothly all the time, there were some minor misleading and miscommunication, but fortunately our team has solved them all. At the begining, we all hope that there wouldn’t be any problem but if there was no problem, there would be nothing to learn from.

COVER STORY
intensive firewood chopping or breaking into internet banks. When arriving in the remote course center in Valkeala I was convinced the whole thing was a ruse to sell our kidneys in the black market, and I was able to stop worrying about my vital organs only after leaving the site. Otherwise Hackathon was a rather pleasant experience. I quickly found my similarly lost looking soulmates among the crowd of determined and goal-oriented people, and together we formed a ragtag bunch under the one trait we all shared: none of us had any idea what we were doing there. After debating whether we should call ourselves “The Leftovers” or “The Spare Keys” we went on to share potentially embarrassing anecdotes from our personal lives. Oh, and I think we also had some sort of developing of startup ideas too. For me, Hackathon was not so much about ideas or innovations, but about meeting new people and bonding with strangers over musical tastes, punctured lungs
and methods of stopping cruise liners. That might be the reason why my team didn’t win. Sorry about that. - Roope The start up hackaton was a great event the was held 21-22nd of march in Valkeala, it was a good opportunity for growing your social network yes I said social network not Facebook, you LinkedIn network. Every entrepreneur needs a good network and people and contact you need a good contact list and these events are great for getting the contact you may need in the future. All the attendees where student from Tallinn University Estonia & Stockholm School of Economic Latvia and most of the student where also from other countries that go to these schools. So by using these sort of event to grow you network is one of the best things you can do as a student, it can help you when studying and when you are in work these contact might be able to help you. One of the
most important tools you have is your contact list. Also all student should be using Linkedin. - Richard With no obvious go to category to base your start up idea in the first question to ask is: What is the thing that I need in my life that hasn’t been invented yet or if it has, how can I improve it? And that is where you pick up. Find your team, people who are as motivated to get your product out there, on the market, put together a portfolio, a business idea, some designs and figure out what else has to be done in order for it to launch some day. It is not an easy task to get all of that done in such a short amount of time but with the help of such a great and experienced team that was organising the event a lot of that - Sarah

The story told from the view point of a six-year-old Jean Louise Finch, a little girl who was living with her brother and her widowed father, Atticus– a lawyer. The main plot started when Atticus was appointed to defend Tom Robinson, a black man who has been accused of raping a young white woman, Mayella Ewell. Although many of Maycomb’s citizens disapprove, Atticus agrees to defend Tom to the best of his ability. The novel surrounded readers with a warm and bright atmosphere eventhough it was dealing with rape, racial inequality and social unfairness.
This short article is about Peach blossom which is kinda similar to Cherry blossom, it has its own back story and now I’m telling you that legend. Once upon a time, there was a mountain ruled by two Gods, they were so strong and powerful that all demons fear of them and fear of the mountain too. That mountain was covered in Peach blossom. On New year, the Gods has to present in Nirvana, the demons act ruthlessly, therefore on New year’s days, people take small braches of Peach blossom to exorcise the demons instead.
RECIPE
THE EASTER LEFTOVER-CAKE
8
By: Karoliina Niemi
There are two types of people. Maybe you are one of those people who still have some chocolate eggs left from Easter. Or maybe you are like me and you have eaten all those chocolate eggs on the first day of Easter and you are just going to buy few more from the sale just because you are greedy and you have no shame. Either way it is your lucky day because today we are introducing a recipe for the Easter Leftover-Cake.
Simple white cake • 4 eggs • 1 ¼ dl sugar • 1 dl flour • ¾ dl potato flour • 1 tsp baking powder • 1 tsp paste colour Filling • 4 dl double cream • 200 g lemon-lime quark • 200 g lemon soft cheese • 1 tsp paste colour Frosting • 200 g finely chopped white chocolate • 100 g butter • Powdered sugar • 1 tsp paste colour Decorations • Easter eggs of your choice (In this cake we dyed some Mignon-eggs) • 2 tsp Cocoa powder • Water
First crack those eggs into a bowl and mix them up with sugar. Combine flour, potato flour and baking powder in a separate bowl. Add to the mixture with eggs and sugar. Mix gently. Pour the mixture into a spring form cake pan. Bake for 30-35 minutes in 175˚c. Once the cake is baked, let it cool. Cake needs to be as cool as the baker, and you know you are cool (after all, you are baking an Easter cake a week after Easter because you ain’t no mainstream). Now you can start with the filling. Whip the cream and carefully mix into other ingredients. Cut the cake into layers and spread the mixture evenly.
For the frosting you need to melt the chocolate, whip it (whip it good!) with melted butter and paste colour. Add enough powdered sugar to make a smooth frosting. Now that the cake is filled, frosted and fabulous, all you need to do is decorate the cake. Make a mixture of cocoa powder and water and sprinkle it on the frosting for example with a brush. Get creative with the chocolate eggs: dye them, crush them, eat them, do whatever you want! This cake is be quite big, so invite your friends over or if you don’t have any, now is the high time to make some.

MUSIC REVIEW
IGGY POP Post Pop Depression By: Roope Sorvo which can be clearly heard. Post Pop Depression sounds a lot more like a Queens of the Stone Age record, especially the 2013’s ...Like Clockwork, than an Iggy Pop one. Given that ...Like Clockwork was one of the better rock albums of the past few years, this is not necessarily a bad thing, even if it feels like occasionally that Homme does his best to hog the spotlight. It is interesting how different moods the two albums have despite similar soundscape: while Clockwork was eerie, alienating and aggressive, Depression is somber, smooth and oddly alluring.
Genre Art Rock / Garage Rock Producer Josh Homme Released March 18, 2016 Rating There are few as prolific and established musicians alive today as Iggy Pop. First making his name as the frontman of the proto-punk outfit The Stooges, Pop’s career spans over six decades. The new release, Post Pop Depression, is the rock icon’s 17th studio album. Despite being labeled as Iggy Pop’s solo record, the album was done in collaboration with the Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme. This is a death-related therapy record for both of them: Pop explores the themes of mortality after the passing of his friend and former collaborator David Bowie, while Homme processes his thoughts after his show became the center stage of the November 2015 Paris terrorist attacks. Homme also produced the album,
Spotify
In addition to ...Like Clockwork, Post Pop Depression shares many similarities with David Bowie’s recent Blackstar. Both are dark, grim albums from veteran artists coming to terms with their own mortality in their twilight years. Similarly to Bowie on Blackstar, Pop utilizes the age-brought frailness of his voice to his full advantage, sounding firm and fragile simultaneously. Lyrically speaking the album is solid, with one exception: “Chocolate Drops” has interesting insights on fame and how people’s views on a person will change after reaching stardom. However, I feel like there could’ve been a better way to express this than “shit turns into chocolate drops”. On “American Valhalla” Pop is looking for some sort of lasting legacy after he’s gone, worrying about what he will leave behind. This is a common theme on Post Pop Depression, right down to its title: what will there be after Iggy Pop? Pop has mentioned that he’s “closing up” after the record. Even if it wasn’t the last record Pop put out, Post Pop Depression is a worthy swan song.

MOVIE REVIEW
Batman v superman Dawn of Justice
By: Sarah Rosenthal already working on it’s n-teens movie surrounding a group of superheroes and they’re making hella money from it.
Genre Action, Adventure, Fantasy Director Zack Snyder Starring Ben Affleck Henry Cavill Gal Gadot Rating Fearing that the actions of Superman are left unchecked, Batman takes on the Man of Steel, while the world wrestles with what kind of a hero it really needs. Wow. Where do I even start? I guess that was the same question the writers for this movie were asking themselves and at some point just said oh fuck it. Half the movie is exposition for a completely ludicrous attempt to pitch two of the main characters in the Justice league against each other because of reasons. One reason being the studio wants a Justice League movie and somehow you need to introduce the characters. And pronto because Marvel is
Yes, it is true that BVS is the fourth highest grossing movie on an opening weekend - as it should be: The studio has been promoting this movie for three years now. THREE FRAKING YEARS!!!11! And while the promotional tour has become more of a redemption arc for Ben Affleck the studio, after a number of non too flattering reviews, released statements claiming it’s a movie for the audience not the critics. TF are you trying to say with this DC? Yes, our movies and the whole franchise are highly inconsistent but we totally splashed out on the special effects..? So for this DC flick forget about everything that happened in the three pretty amazing Batman movies from director Christopher Nolan and get ready for yet another relaunch of the Batman franchise, making him the Spiderman of the DC universe. At the same time there is a DC show on the air about Gotham City where young Bruce Banner does... things (?), I’m just gonna go ahead and assume that this show is also not connected to the movies, shall I? What about all the other DC shows? Is DC just a bunch of fanboys all scrambling to get their fingers on a piece of their favourite characters and spend money on seeing their fanfictions made into motion pictures? The overall aesthetic of the movie was a mix somewhere between early 80s Sci Fi like Blade Runner, brooding Myspace emo kids of the late 90s and the cheerfulness of your pet’s funeral. #TeamIronMan
