GUEST ARTICLE

DIFFERENT BEAUTY IDEALS Kirsi’s and Sara’s Adventures in China Part 6 Text by: Kirsi Rouhiainen Photos by: Kirsi Rouhiainen & Sara Czabai

Everybody wanted a selfie with Kirsi Kirsi in the article of the local newspaper

I thought I´d surprise the INSIDER readers by NOT writing about food this time. A year ago around this time of the year we got to visit Shanghai and our partner university in Jinhua. It was my first time ever in China. After the exhausting 9 hours flight we (I mean Kirsi) refused to take a taxi and instead we took a nice long metro ride to downtown Shanghai. I recall the whole Shanghai metro being wallpapered with the advertisements of a huge international cosmetics company, advertising a whole range of skin whitening products. I was

astonished and amazed at the same time. But only after arriving to Jinhua (a small village of 5 million inhabitants) I understood that with our super pale faces (what 6 month of Finnish winter does to you) we were up for a real celebrity treatment. It started in the train already: people “secretly” taking selfies with us in the background. Later on we realized, that we were almost the only “white” people in Jinhua and as such we were real sights.

Our Chinese colleagues kept admiring our (awfully) pale complexion, Kirsi´s blond hair and her amazingly blue eyes were constant target of admiration. Kirsi was the absolute star, also due to her seniority, she was featured in every photo, including an article of the local newspaper! So if you are blond/blue-eyed, or simply pale like hell as I am, and you want to be treated as a celebrity, I can warmly recommend a visit in a tiny (few millions) city in rural China!

BUSINESS ADVICE Interview Part 1

Text: Frank van de Voorde | Photos by: Richard McGrath

Last week Master of Business Administration (MBA) students, in collaboration with Patteri, organized the Master Yourself event in Paja. Matti Kukkonen director and owner of Kaslink Foods Oy and Timo Nisula owner of Kouvolan Lakritsi Oy gave elaborate speeches on the topic and generously agreed to do an interview for Insider. Reason enough to sit down with these two successful gentlemen during their break and have a long and enervating chat.

Would you like to see more cooperation between companies and universities? MK: Obviously, because we have a University of Applied Sciences here in Kouvola so I think it makes a lot of sense to have some cooperation between companies and the university. At least what I know is that there is already some cooperation existing but I don’t know to what extent. There has been some cooperation but often the communication between students and companies is problematic and companies often don’t offer enough help. MK: I think it requires an attitude change from the companies involved. It is actually true that when the university contacts me with a project or something like that, the first thing I need to do is actually evaluate how much time it will take and whether it is actually going to be beneficial for the company, or is it just going to be a burden for me TN: There is a huge problem in

companies because they don’t have the time or the understanding. You have people from abroad to come here to study; from all over the world. What do the companies do? Nothing. It is actually beneficial for both when you take people in and show them your business and maybe give them some advice or create contacts. Then maybe they go back to their country and start an export business. I think we really need to expand that cooperation. I am doing it sometimes, but I understand that time is the limit. I don’t think this is a money problem. It is a time problem, or a willing problem, or even an understanding problem. If you ask 100 companies then 99 will say nope. That is the problem. How do you think a mutual beneficial relationship can be established? TN: That is a good question. MK: Well at least what I expect when I am contacted by a student of the university is that they already have a clear proposal

of what to do. Not like that they come to us and then we start discussing what they possibly could be doing. I more or less expect a ready proposal or a framework that is well thought of in advance. So we know what to do and how the university can help us. TN: That is better than when we sit down and ask ourselves: “what shall we do?” Companies are not study places. In school you have to flesh out an idea that is on some level thought through first and then you come to the company. I have been doing a hell of a lot of discussions, questions and whatever. I have this company and whatever marketing opportunity and there have been students and what do they give to me? Nothing. You can do that a few times because it is good for the students but the twentieth time maybe I have something else to do. I might have a coffee break or something. It definitely needs something more, and then it is of course a good thing. What do you think about theory versus practical experience?

COVER STORY

Matti Kukkonen TN: If you read some economics book that was written twenty years ago which nobody knows if it is right or wrong but it is now in fashion and then you come as a new employee, and as a clever guy and share all the bloody a###ole wisdoms then I don’t give a s###. However if you have done something else besides only this paper wisdom and you can create something valuable then you and the company learn something and maybe together you create something fantastic. That is the target, and then you get good results. MK: It would actually make things a lot easier if there would be a coordinator at the university who contacts all the companies and would know us already and know what kind of students we might need. Because every time there is a student contacting us, we need to explain everything from the beginning. TN: Yes, and we could tell to the coordinator that we have a project and then they know what kind of guy they have for us and

Timo Nisula that is a fruitful coordination. MK: Honestly, if I have a project right now and I could use students from the university well I don’t know who to contact. What kind of advice would you give to foreign students looking for a job or internship in your company? MK: Learn Finnish! That is actually very unfortunate but if you want to work at our company you really need to speak Finnish. We have very few possibilities to hire anyone who doesn’t speak the language. Unfortunately, because I would very gladly hire foreign people. TN: As long as you know some Finnish and have the right attitude. You won’t have any problems as long as you understand what people are saying because it is easier to understand than speak. Do you think that foreign employees give you some benefit?

MK: A different way of thinking because they come from a different culture. TN: It creates acceptance. Some people aren’t used to being around foreigners but when you are working eight hours together you have to get along. How important is sustainability in your company? MK: Very. The meaning of sustainability is becoming more and more important all the time and it is very important for our customers for example Unilever, one of our biggest trade partners. They aim to be CO2 free by 2030. They are very strict on how we produce our products, and environmental values are very important. It is also in our own values that we try to produce our products as efficiently as possible and that we are trying to look for new technologies to make the products better. We actually have many products going on regarding a circular economy. TN: More or less very.

Harry Potter is probably the most familiar book series to children and adult of all ages but it is never too much to read this series again. The series contain of 7 consecutive books telling a story of a wizardry world. The thing that I love the most about this book is not only the journey to fight against the Dark Art of the Harry – the main character with his 2 best friends but also the beautiful and magnificent wizardry world that J.K. Rowling has created. This imaginary world is so real and so well-fitted to our “Muggle” (the word for non-wizard individual) world that make me believe in visiting Hogwarts someday...

Chronicle of Narnia is another fantasy series that made my childhood. The author had successfully created a whole world with land and seas and kingdoms hidden behind the door of an old wardrobe. The story started Digory Kirke and his friend Polly Plummer stumbled into a different world using a magical ring of Digory’s uncle. They are the one who witnessed the creation of Narnia. Then years after, when the two were old already, four children discovered the gate to Narnia inside Digory’s wardrobe and started their journey in Narnia as heroes, saviors, kings and queens...

In the epic trilogy His Dark Materials, Philip Pullman unlocks the door to worlds parallel to our own. Dæmons and winged creatures live side by side with humans, and a mysterious entity called Dust just might have the power to unite the universes--if it isn’t destroyed first. The three books in Pullman’s heroic fantasy series are united here in one boxed set that includes The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass. Join Lyra, Pantalaimon, Will, and the rest as they embark on the most breathtaking, heartbreaking adventure of their lives. The fate of the universe is in their hands...

RECIPE

SWEET AND SPICY CHICKEN

Korean style

Text by: Khue Do | Photo by: Nguyet Tran

It is snowing again. In these cold and windy days, some spicy dishes will definitely warm up your day, or your stomach at least. So I am introducing you the sweet and spicy chicken dish originally from South Korea. Usually, on cold and rainy days, the Korean go out together with their friends and family to have spicy chicken as well as beer or Sochu (also known as the Korean vodka). So today, let’s make some thing different. Some delicious Asian dish would not be a bad idea.

Ingredients: • 1kg chicken thigh (or wings) • 2 eggs • Flour • Breadcrumb • 20g chopped garlic • 1 tablespoon of gochujang (Korean chili sauce) • 1 tablespoon sesame oil • 1 tablespoon soya sauce • 1 tablespoon of olive oil • 2 tablespoons ketchup • Sesame seeds

Ainekset : • 1kg broilerin reisi (tai siivet) • 2 munaa • Jauhot • leivänmuru • 20g hienonnettu valkosipuli • 1 rkl gochujang • (Korean chilikastiketta) • 1 rkl seesamiöljyä • 1 rkl soijakastiketta • 1 rkl oliiviöljyä • 2 ruokalusikallista ketsuppi • seesaminsiemeniä

First cut the chicken in 5cm pieces. Let the flour cover the chicken pieces, then dip them in the stirred eggs and again, let the breadcrumb be the last layer for the chicken pieces. Deep-fry the chicken until they turn golden brown.

Finally, nicely cover the deepfried chicken with the sauce, top it with the sesame seeds and we are ready to eat now!

Next, get a bowl and fill it up with olive oil, gochujang, sesame oil, soya sauce, ketchup and the chopped garlic. Cook the mixture until it has a smooth sauce.

I truly hope nobody will turn the fire alarm on. Have a safe cooking time. See you again in the next issues.

MUSIC REVIEW

KENDRICK LAMAR untitled unmastered. By: Roope Sorvo ings around the album.

Genre HipHop Producer Various Released March 4, 2016 Rating Right now, Kendrick Lamar is probably the hottest rapper in business; just in the last year his album To Pimp A Butterfly was the most acclaimed album of 2015, as well as a humongous commercial success; he featured on songs by superstars like Kanye West and Taylor Swift; on the side he won a bunch of Grammys. As if he hadn’t been busy enough, he’s now pumping out the second album within the span of a year. Fortunately we do not have fear about Lamar burning out like a student’s money during a pub crawl, as he has made clear that untitled unmastered. is not a follow-up for To Pimp A Butterfly, rather than a collection of demos and record-

Lamar continues on the same dark lyrical waters as with Butterfly, tackling similar, politically charged and deeply psychological themes. However, musically he has inhaled quite deeply from the glue bottle labeled “experimental”, flirting with genres like avant-garde, free jazz and funk. This gives the album a brand new coat of paint beyond just the “To Pimp A Butterfly Demos” concept, and makes the album infinitely more interesting. Some of the tracks have surprising hit potential; if not for their odd instrumentation, tracks like “untitled 06” and “untitled 08” would fit right in on Butterfly, after quick renaming of course.

Kivimiehenkatu 6 45100 Kouvola 040 8095091 www.bardowntownkouvola.com

Unfortunately, every now and then the less pleasant side of ‘freeform demo’ raises its ugly head: some of the transitions are clunky; the second half of “untitled 07” is just one riff that Lamar and the crew verbally riff over, laughing and joking about how they’re going to “jam for 15 minutes”. It shows the guys clearly had fun in the studio, but also drags on too long. Thankfully the album’s general quality easily smoothes out such tiny faults.

starts 22h

I was afraid that untitled unmastered. might just be a glorified version of the Disc 2 that usually gets released with an album’s deluxe edition. Fortunately, on untitled unmastered. Kendrick Lamar proves to be on the height of his creativity, occasionally even excelling the landmark that is To Pimp A Butterfly; showcasing exactly why he’s the hottest rapper in business.

MOVIE REVIEW

SECRET IN THEIR EYES The truth lies in the most unexpected places. By: Sarah Rosenthal fine to steal storylines from anyone and make them their own (but oh bother if anybody outside the U.S. does that to any of their movies *impending law suit* and #shitstorm).

Genre Mystery, Thriller Director Billy Ray Starring Chiwetel Ejiofor Julia Roberts Nicole Kidman Rating A tight-knit team of rising investigators, along with their supervisor, is suddenly torn apart when they discover that one of their own teenage daughters has been brutally murdered. When was the last time you watched a movie festuring either Julia Roberts or Nicole Kidman? I certainly cannot remember the last time I’ve seen either one of them on the big screen and to be honest I wish I hadn’t. I get that Hollywood thinks it’s better than any other place in the world in producing movies and all and on top of that has that U.S. American attitude that it’s

Well this movie was no different. Instead of coming up with their own origianl idea for a mystery-crime thriller the studio chose to take a perfectly good Argentinian movie, water down the storyline as much as they can, cast some critically acclaimed faces and roll with it. It’s exact same thing they did with several movies and TV shows: The Grudge, Eye, Death at a Funeral, Taxi (This one I’m just so furious about. How dare they?), the Danish/ Sweedish TV show Bron/Broen or the British TV shows Life on Mars and Skins.

This movie is in no way special, out-standing or relevant. It makes no statement, there are no jump-scares, no jokes, nothing that could be considered a surpising plot twist. This movie just drags on and on and could not have been made more exciting had they said it was based on a true story.

Sota ja Mielenrauha (S) | 10e| 1h12min Sat 12:30 Sun, Tues 19:00

On top of all that is badly lit and since it plays at two different points in time and had they not given Nicole Kidman different hair in the different time shots it would have been really quite confusing. It was overall badly made and even Ejiofor’s outstanding performance didn’t help.

Äkkilähtö (12) | 11e | 1h39min Fri-sun, Tues, Thurs 17:30

Overwhelmingly underwhelming. Solid but boring. Literally any episode of CSI: Miami is more thrilling, passionate and emotional than this whole almost two hour long movie. #nothingspecial
