EXCHANGE VIEW: TRIP TO REPOVESI NATIONAL PARK

It’s a beautiful feeling when waking up in sunlight, if it’s supposed to rain all day long. If you‘re further known you will spend the day with a bunch of nice guys, from all over the world, out there in nature, the day starts even sweeter. So we were quiet exited picking up our stuff, already too late, in the morning. So just a little bit to late, sorry guys, we left by bus.

We continued our way through woods wondering about the beauty of nature. We managed to grab an empty barbecue spot and rise a bonfire just before the rain started. We sat there for about an hour around the bonfire having a great time in the rain. But the rain got worse and worse. So we went on. I just feel like and I know that others feel the exact same, that you just can‘t get used to the Finnish rain. After a while the rain didn‘t seem to matter anymore. So even the fact that we managed to get lost in the woods seemed to be alright as well. Thankfully, we had Eino in our group who managed to guide us the way back, thank you hon. In the end, we all got back, wet in our pants, but happy. I guess I can speak for all of us exchange students: Thank you Ulf and all the tutors for that wonderful trip.

Arriving at the national park we all picked up the food for having barbecue later in the park. We split up in groups and began to discover Finnish nature. I know you are supposed to be quiet in nature, but lets be honest, we just chatted all the time, getting to know each other a little bit better. 21-25.09.15 INTERNATIONAL WEEK 21-25.9. It is happening again! The International Week will be organized for the 4th time 21-25.9. at the KasarminmĂ¤ki campus and you are hereby officially invited! As you may know, there are more than 200 foreign students studying at this campus from over 35 different countries. This is your chance to get to know the/their university/culture/food etc.

This is how you can participate: 1. 22.9. 14.00-16.30 University presentations in Paja Project room. If you are interested in going on Erasmus exchange, you can find out more about our partner universities from our exchange students/teachers 2. 22.9. 17.00-19.00 International Food Tasting in Paja aula is always the highlight of the week, where you can taste Vietnamese, Chinese, Russian, French, Spanish, Czech, Dutch, Belgian, Nigerian, Nepalese, Hungarian, Bulgarian, Danish, Finnish etc. delicacies. Finnish students please note that Finish cuisine should also be represented at the food tasting event!

FUKSIAISET 2015 - HOLLYWOOD: TOONS VS. CHARACTERS Really now? Yes, I know, it is the Freshmen Party. The party for Freshmen. The party especially chosen to introduce Freshmen to the party life of Kyamk. Freshmen Party. That Party. I get it, we all get it - but is it really so difficult to come up with a theme that is, you know, at least slightly innovative? Just slightly? Like I don’t know, maybe Mangas vs. Fairy Tales? Fruits vs. Vegetables? Mac and cheese vs. Microsoft? Hipsters vs. Hobos? Gryffindor vs. “The Other Houses”? 90s vs. 20s? Plants vs Zombies? The Amish vs. Jersey Shore (or Keeping up with the Kardashians)? I understand that it is easier for some to stay with what they know, have done before. It was fun the last few times, I get it, I do. And I’m sure for the Freshmen, to whom this party was dedicated, it was a great kick-off for the co-

ming semester but to everybody else it was kinda: been there, done that, seen it already. Life starts outside your comfort zone. Take me for example I hate flying, yet I keep doing it until one day I won’t care anymore or my fear becomes reality and I die in a plane crash. Here are some more themes that might have worked: Blue vs. White (people could have brought the Finnish flag to life or various social media app logos), Friday night vs. Monday morning, White dad at a barbecue vs. Stripper who’s rent is due tomorrow (this practically screams Dance-Off check point), “I wish people would bring back 1337 speak”-party (“Ah, yes, squire indeedeth.”) or Summer vs. Winter? And even if it had to be Hollywood, how about Hollywood vs. Howdy y’alls? So many possibilities. DÄT AFTERPARTY THO, AMIRITE? Touba? Really? It‘s not a bad location for a party. It‘s cosy and pretty and gives of a somewhat more exclusive vibe than all the other bars and clubs around town. You could almost call it suave. The problem with that is, again, it‘s a ducking Freshmen Party. The party for Freshmen. The party especially

chosen to introduce Freshmen to the party life of Kyamk. Freshmen Party. That Party. And Touba is not necessarily the place where you want to have that kind of party. Half the people (the Freshmen) are light-headed from all the tasks and possible drinking prior to coming to the Afterparty, the other half (students who enthuse less about jumping through hoops in more or less comfy costumes e.g. non-Freshmen and others) probably went to some kind of pre-party, předkalba, l‘apéro, voor drinken or Vorglühen or whatever else you want to call it.

Well it is something we all know about and we’ve all done, probably… some people may not have. What is important about it is, that in this state of mind going up a spiral staircase is risky, problematic and in some cases downright impossible, depending of course on how extensive your “догонимся дома, а потом пойдем!” was. Don’t forget you had to get back down too - slightly more drunk than when you were making your way up. IN CONCLUSION It was a super fun party. Any party is fun when you’re with the right kind of people, laughing, dancing and/or whatever. And indeed the music was much better than it usually is in House of Rock. They kept the 90s and noughties to a minimum which I’m sure everybody appreciated but had just about enough in it give people an in-/

MUSIC REVIEW Miley Cyrus: Miley Cyrus and Her Dead Petz Genre: Experimental/Psychedelic Pop Producer: Miley Cyrus, The Flaming Lips, Oren Yoel Released: : August 30, 2015

During the last few years, Miley Cyrus has become known for her various publicity stunts as the textbook example of the less dignified route to take when you want to distance yourself from your old Disney Channel image. But for all the twerking, substance abuse and naked wrecking ball riding she has done, her ‘shocking’ antics have never reached her music, which has been as stale and bland as chart fodder gets. But now, for the first time, her stunts actually relate to the music she makes. First, she released the album available for free streaming with no prior advertising. Second, it was made in collaboration with The Flaming Lips, an experimental band known for such antics as releasing their music encased in edible gummy fetuses and real human skulls, as well as interesting musical projects as the 24-hour long song “7 Skies H3” and “Two Blobs Fucking”, a composition meant to be played via Youtube with 12 different smartphones simultaneously. Naturally, I was intrigued; maybe the two extremes could meet in halfway and form some sort of beautiful amalgamation between over the top psychedelia and pop sensibilities? Soundwise, the combination works exactly as I presumed: Cyrus’s blander material is elevated by the creativity of the ‘Lips, while she keeps the bands’ ideas closer to Earth so even an average pop listener can get something out of it without the help of acid or magic mushrooms. The musical style is a hybrid of the Lips’ psychedelic, distorted drone and Cyrus’s modern dance pop, with both styles complimenting each other: the noise aesthetic drowns out the most grating aspects of Cyrus’s chipmunk-like voice, while her contributions to the songwriting keep the songs from slipping into the subliminal abyss of noise most recent ‘Lips recordings have drifted into. However, it seems like that the band has had more leverage in the making than Cyrus, as the end result is reminiscent of the bittersweet and dreamy Flaming Lips material of early 2000’s, with some MØ-like electronics thrown in.

This is not always a good thing. While some numbers, like the sombre “Karen Don’t Be Sad” or the hammering “1 Sun” work tremendously, many of the songs are trainwrecks of various (half-)baked ideas; for example the opener “Dooo It!” seems to have about five different vocal tracks, all of them seemingly in different time signatures. Often Cyrus sings in a way that sounds like she’s trying to imitate completely wasted Lana Del Rey. Apparently not a single record label personnel heard the album prior its release, and it can be heard: the album could have also used some serious trimming and editing: now the whole thing is over hour and a half long. Which is a shame really, as with some outsider perspective this overly long, bloated mess could have been refined into something great. The cover image sums up the album perfectly; it could have been something pretty, colourful and shiny, but it slightly missed its mark and ended up an ugly mess.

Coffe

CAPPUCCINO

Ingredients: milk, any kind of coffee , toppings - as you wish Tools: spoon, french press, cup 1. First we need to make coffee, your imagination is not limited in the choice of coffees. We took 2 teaspoons of coffee and 100 g of water for excellent coffee. Boil and pour into a cup, but leave room for the foam. 2. Now it‘s time for milk. For frothed milk required - french press. For best results you can get with this way - fill 1/3 press coffee maker with boiling milk, so it will be more convenient to whip up without spilling. 3. Add milk to coffee ... lovely drink is ready, if you want spill chocolate chips, cinnamon, or cream. Bon Appetit!

We chose this recipe in purpose - September is an excellent time to get ready for surprises of the north country (by the way, Finland is considered the world‘s first consumer of this drink) Name „cappuccino“ - this way of making coffee was invented by the famous Capuchin Franciscan order. When Riley gets uprooted from her Midwest life to move to San Francisco, her emotions - Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness get into conflict on how best to navigate her through a new city, house, and school. By accident Joy and Fear who work in the Headquarter (Geddit?) get sucked into a memory tube and end up in the rest of Riley’s memory somewhere down in the labyrinth of long-term memories. Leaving Anger, Joy and Fear in charge is dangerous so they have to find their way back by any means necessary. On their way they meet Riley’s imaginary friend Bing Bong who helps them on their adventure.To make it short it is a really depressing movie, making you think about how many things you may have already forgotten about and will never be able to remember. How many imaginary friends did my brain sacrifice in order for me to keep my mental health? Why do so many animated kids movies kick you in the feels like that? Thank you Pixar for yet another existential crisis. Maybe I’m just too emotionally weak to watch this type of movies. When is Suicide Squad airing again? That’s gotta be much more cheery, right?
