St. Petersburg Open 2013. Every year St. Petersburg turns into the playground for international tennis tournament St.Petersburg Open ATP250. Different sportsmen from all over the world come there in order to fight for the title “The winner of St. Petersburg”. This year, in singles the winner is the Latvian sportsman Ernest Gulbis (25th place in the world singles ranking). He played very beautiful and exciting game against Spanish tennis player Guillermo Garcia-Lopez (64th place in the world singles ranking). After the game I asked Guillermo several questions, concerning his life. Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, Spain, 30 years old, right handed Guillermo, how long have you played tennis? From the time when I was 7 years old. Your favorite tournament is… Australian Open The most memorable victory is… It was in 2004 in Australian Open against Carlos Moya. He is a legend in Spain and it was amazing to win. Your cherished dream is… I think, like every player, my dream is to win more tournaments and to be a good person. The last one, I believe, is the most important. Have you ever been in Finland? Yes, of course. Many times and the last one was in 2004.You have a good tennis competition for young athletes. Are you going to come back to St. Petersburg next year? I would like to, but won’t promise anything.Wait and see. The most memorable accident or event in your life Once, I remember, I was in Japan during the earthquake. Unforgettable moment but wasn’t the most pleasant but anyway. Doubles games are getting more and more popular, so St. Petersburg Open isn’t an exception. The finalist of doubles competition Denis Istomin, from Uzbekistan (35th place in the world doubles ranking), proved himself as a real fighter, professional and a reliable partner. Furthermore, he is a nice person and interesting young man. Denis Istomin, Uzbekistan, 27 years old, right handed Denis, how long have you played tennis? Almost 23 years. Your favorite tournament is… Kremlin Cup in Moscow The most memorable victory is… Last year against Roger Federer in Indian Wells, Paribas Open Your cherished dream is… To be the first in the world ranking ATP Have you ever been in Finland? Of course, in Helsinki. It is a very nice and beautiful city. But a cold one. Could you wish anything to our readers? Never give up, try to achieve your goals again and again and of course, do sports. Text and photos: Victoria Zhroina

Kyamk´s international project

-Wood Academy2011-2013 Wood Academy is Kyamks international partnership and collaboration project about coming up with new ideas and innovations for wood design and usage of wood in products and small building. It started 1.5.2011 and it ends end of this year 31.12.2013. They are settled in and office they share with Patteri Network on the main floor of the Paja Building. Their tem consists of their project manager is Pekka Malinen, special expert/ advisor Heikki Lindroos, research manager Petri Heino, project assistant Mari Simonen, consultant Antti Viitanen from the Patteri Network, and designers/ workers/project managers Matti Vaskimo and Dario Vidal. They also have an intern that has worked with them since spring, Miska Karvinen, wood artisan. Before the project closes I have talked to the team to reintroduce them to students that haven´t heard about this project before. Who are you? I’m Miska Karvinen. I’m 22 years old and originally from Rääkkylä, Eastern Finland. I’m studying at the moment in adult program Wood Design (puumuotoilu) in KyAMK which started in January 2013. I like sports, music and being with people. Before coming to Kouvola I graduated from 3,5 year wood artisan program in North Karelia College, Joensuu and after that studied one year in United States Cabinetmaking and Millwork in Madison Area Technical College, Madison, Wisconsin. Why and how did you join WoodAcademy? I joined WoodAcademy after taking part in Urban Horticulture workshop as a helper at wood workshop. I had spare time during the weeks and they got some projects to work on. It is a great chance for me to get experience on design projects and improve my professional skills. At the moment in WoodAcademy... I’m working ona few different design projects. Your plans for the future and where you want to go after WoodAcademy? I still have more than three years of school left so no rush making up future plans. I’m gonna continue making own design projects during the school and maybe in the future start my own business. Who are you? I am Matti Vaskimo, designer. My favorite style could be functional art and hobbies snowsculpting, reading. Why and how did you join WoodAcademy? I was hired to Wood Academy after I graduated in summer 2012. I did my thesis for WoAc. To me it is important to support ecological values and sustainability. Wood academy is working to find some answers for these values.

At the moment in WoodAcademy... Work and by doing so, hopefully making difference. Your plans for the future and where you want to go after WoodAcademy? Future plans after this wood academy project is over; Doing my masters degree in art (don’t know yet, where) and travel. Who are you? Dario Vidal, designer, mexican-finnish, graduated about one year ago. Did my exchange studies in Barcelona, Spain. Why and how did you join Wood Academy? The reason for me to join Wood Academy was very simple. After working 6 months in KymiDesign, Wood Academy offered me a job, and I gladly accepted the place. My working place allows me to be creative, the working environment is great and I am getting what I was looking for, work experience. It was also a good opportunity for me to get more confident with my Finnish language, and it has certainly improved a lot. What are your plans at the WoodAcademy at the moment? Plans are to keep doing what we’ve been doing. My part in this particular workplace is to apply parametric modelling and generative design in our projects. We have had various clients, ranging from public sector to private companies. Your plans for the future and where you want to go after WoodAcademy? I’m looking for a masters degree. I actually enjoyed being a student and I miss it. Wood Academy has been a great start for my professional career and a great workplace, but now it is time for a masters.

Their most known project and also the most promoted and seen around our school, is the beautiful wooden bus station. It is meant to be placed on our Campus bus station eventually, but has so far been circulating some public events and now waiting to be assembled and placed in it´s designated spot. If you want to take a look and try out a prototype of this station, you can go to Paja, main floor, and check it out yourselves.

HOW TO: We have all had issues with taking our headphones out of our pockets, after neatly wrapping them around the music player, and finding them so tangled that they are beyond reason.Tiny little elves go into your pockets and mess them up just to drive you

PERSONALISE YOUR HEADPHONES AND PREVENT THE CORDS FROM TANGLING

crazy! Well, here is a stylish, fun solution to your problems!

You need:tape, glue, string(wool,or anything like it will do, the thicker the string, the quicker it will go)aprox. 18m, scissors, paper clip.

If you don´t want to switch the colour, continue without tying the knot.If you switch the colour, tie a knot at end of first section(colour)and continue down, wrapping around both strings.

Tie a knot at the beggining of the cord, very tight, and leave aprox. 5cm hanging down to wrap around with the cord.

Wrap down tightly, around Repeate this process with every the cord, and when done section(colour) change, making sure with the section tie a knot you are wrapping nice and tight and leave another 5cm around. If you want to take a brake, hanging with the cord. use a paper clip to secure the string.

Once done with wrapping the cords, repeating the basic systems, put small dab of glue at end of each section to secure your strings and prevent them from unwrapping.

The final result should be tight and very much your personalised stylish pair of headphones. This should prevent them wrapping up and tangling in your pockets and make you a happier music/book listener. Enjoy!

Frederic Daelemans student affairs secretary

Hi Frederic, can you please tell us something about your background information?

I’m from Belgium, 32 years old. About the story how I came here, first I started working in Scotland. Then moved to Finland with the original plan to work for a while saving up money to travel around the world. But I ended up staying here because I got a permanent job, which is difficult to get nowadays.

What is your main job at Kyamk? How long have you been working here?

I started as an assistant in the department of business after taking 9 month intensive Finnish course. Since 2009, I’ve started to work as “student affairs secretary” (taking care of student admission, up keeping student information...)

Do you love your work?

Yes, it’s a nice job! This is much more interesting than what I had done before (I used to have a customer service job). The work here is quite a lot throughout the year with two application periods, exams, etc.

So how’s your autumn holiday?

Oh, I don’t have this holiday (smile). Actually it’s nice to work when there is no students around during the holiday.

What are your hobbies/ passions?

Drawing is my passion as well as my dreaming career. I mostly focus on Digital Painting (drawing with a tablet). Actually I am a student in Finnish design program for adults at Kyamk now. So my life is quite busy as I work and study full time at the same time. Additionally I am doing some personal projects connecting with my passion.

Would you like to share some of your drawings with students?

Sure, and let’s share my drawings on Facebook, tumblr and everywhere else possible!

Thank you very much and wish you good luck with your dreams! Text and photo: Hoang Anh Nguyen

The worlds have aligned and an enemy older than the universe itself emerges. Hell-bend on revenge, Malekith (Christopher Eccleston) seeks to destroy the nine realms and plunge them into darkness. Thor has to reunite with Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) on earth and embark on his most perilous journey to save us all.

Marvels “Thor: The Dark World” picks up one year after the events in the Avengers. Jane Foster has pretty much given up on finding a way to Asgard, Darcy (Kat Dennings) has found herself her own intern and Doctor Selvig (Stellan Skarsgård) finds himself a new home – kind of. When physics starts to behave in ways it is not supposed to behave in, they are reunited with the God of Thunder to help him stop the destruction of Universe.Yet in order to do so he has to commit treason and sacrifice everything. The 2nd Thor movie is way up and beyond its predecessor. Director Alan Taylor (Game of Thrones) stepped away from the goofy, comical appeal of the 1st film and delivers a much darker motion picture. It definitively had the best otherworldly creatures, weaponry and spaceships since Star Wars. Another plus is, it never lost the sense of humour that one automatically expects from a Marvel movie and which plays out so marvelously thanks to the great chemistry between the actors.
