Have you noticed that there is a spruce already in the city center? And do not forget that some shops will have Christmas sale beginning in next two weeks. As Mariah Carey’s song, Christmas time is in the air again and I hope all of you will find some beautiful presents for yourselves and family in this special occasion. One suggestion is that Kyamk Design Market and Christmas Second Hand Store will be on Saturday November 30 2013 at Paja and I am sure you will find something interesting there. Although the International Evening was weeks ago, everyone seems to still remember it. In case you missed the show, turn to the main article pages and take a look. For business student, there was an important event in Helsinki – a startup conference SLUSH. Our staff member – Victoria Zhorina was there this week and she will tell us about what happened there in this issue. And if anyone is interested in game design, there will be a surprise for you here! This week issue, we decided to interview one of our teachers – who is in charge for marketing field in our school. Don’t miss it if you want to know about her daily life. It is the end of November and we have not seen snow yet so it may be a disappointment for those who want to take picture of winter scenery and snowflakes. But don’t worry, we have an interesting idea for you. Why not create your own photo mini studio at home? Turn to page 10 to see what you need and how to make it.

This year Helsinki turned into the background of SLUSH event. What does the SLUSH mean? SLUSH is an annual and international event, which gives an opportunity of further growth to the start uppers. “It’s cold, it’s dark, but the pulse of Slush is all need to warm the soul” – such slogan attracted young participants to apply for competition. This year is the sixth anniversary of SLUSH. They started in 2008 with only 150 attendees and this number has grown into over 5000 participants. Every year there are many freshmen participants, startups and volunteers, but for more than hundred people, SLUSH is the first experience in startup environment. The idea of the project is simple – the organizers invite the most successful and interesting people from all over the world and young entrepreneurs with good ideas and get them together for two intense days. It helps to make collaboration between the startup community of serial entrepreneurs, investors, companies and volunteers. There were many speakers, who talked about more hands-on topics like building culture, managing growth, recruiting the best and conquering Asia. Here are several names of them: Jyrki Katainen (Prime Minister of Finland) Toomas Hendrik Ilves (President of the Republic of Estonia) Arkady Dvorkovich (Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation) Jorma Ollila (Chairman of the Board of Royal Dutch Shell) Niklas Zennström (Founding Partner and CEO at Atomico, Co-founder and Former CEO at Skype) The main task for startups is following: SLUSH gathers all the relevant people in one place, so participants have to know with whom they should talk. The talks last 10-15 minutes and during that time a person should introduce himself to many people, in other words present a pitch. The most important goal is to have more people remember your startup after SLUSH. Text:Victoria Zhorina

This is a good event for young people who want to set up their own business in Europe and in Finland especially. And every year SLUSH gives such opportunity. It is the best place to find useful connections and investors, meet interesting people and learn lots of beneficial things. Finland supports the future generation and who knows, probably next year you can be participant of SLUSH and in 10 years your company will be in “TOP 100 successful companies in the world”.

Kyamk´s got talents

There is one thing in November that every student in Kyamk is looking for. Yes! You are right. The International Evening which was organized by IB12 students was the most talked about and advertised event during last two weeks and despite the cold and dark time of November, the event had brought the atmosphere full of friendliness and joyfulness to everyone.

The show was decided to start at 6.00pm in 12th of November, but almost every student was there half an hour early waiting for it to start. Last year, the theme of the evening was “Hawaiian Beach” and there was so many talented students performing this year, “Kyamk’s Got Talent” was chosen so that everyone can show their hidden talent and “shine bright like a star” as written in these posters. The show was hosted by two charismatic students: Mikhail Uspenskiy from IB12TR and Katerina Uglovskaya from IB13. Even this was the first time they worked together; the two MCs did such a great work, interacting with audience, asking questions to them and bringing laugh through the whole show. Like the format of “Got Talent” show which is so popular, the contestants needed to perform in front of the judges – our beloved teachers: Kirsi Rouhiainen, Maria Liisa and Slaveya Hämäläinen. The show started first with the performance of our guest – Trang Hoang with the song “Kiss me” from Sixpence None The Richer. The first contestant was Bao Trung with one of the most famous opera arias, from Mozart’s opera “The Magic Flute” called “Der Hölle Rache“. He had impressed the judges by reaching extremely high notes even he only praticed two weeks before. Bich Diep –IB13 student also touched everyone’s heart but in different way when she was singing the song “Bonjour Vietnam“. Slaveya had admitted that the song was so strong that almost brought tears to her eyes. The next contestant – Anh Thai decided to sing a modern song from Justin Timberlake “Mirrors” and both judges thought his voice was nice even though he was nervous a little bit. The “Kyamk’s Got Talent” show was organized by students for students, but everyone still had the chance to perform although they were not studying in Kyamk. The next candidate was truly a professional singer when he had been singing for living for a while. With the appearance of a musician: long hair and an acoustic guitar, Tarmo

Ranta sang his own song “Somewhere over the rain”. Maria agreed that his voice was strong, lots of potential and encouraged him to follow his dream. Everyone seemed to be with singing so the hosts made the audience to volunteer to play a small football game. Two players – Melvin form Netherlands and Huy Dong from Vietnam had to control the ball with their foot without letting it fall to the ground. With his amazing tricks, Melvin won the prize from the contest. The trick from the Dutch man was so great and the next contestant – Tien Pham took it to higher level with even harder skills. Tien had performed last year but Kirsi was still impressed and told him to keep practicing. Singing seemed to be preferable when Thang Tran took an emotional song from Lionel Richie “Hello” and we all admitted that he was really into it. And before the last performance, two MCs asked the crowd to guess the name of the song, with a little hint was that it was from Christina Aguilera. With the beautiful voice and her gorgeous dress, Liya Lakerbaya had made Kirsi feel the strong passion of the song “Hurt” from the American singer. After all performances, the judges had to tell us that it was tough decision to decide who would be the winner since every candidate had amazing talent. However, the audience also had their voice and they could vote for their most favorite performer. The time to announce who would win the ticket to Stockholm for two nights arrived and the winner of the Tuesday evening talent show in Meduusa Studio was Thang Tran with only three votes more than the runner-up. What a stiff competition!

The show ended to the theme song “Hollywood Hills” sung by the organizers - IB12 students and it received a the big round of applause from the audience. The best rewards to the whole organizing team and the camera crew from Media students were definitely the smiles and joy of the audience. All teachers and students agreed that it was the most beautiful event and even Kirsi said that the show was the best thing during her career. Everyone did not want to finish the night at that time so the party had its continuation in BarQ until 3.00 am. People were brought together in a dark night of November and they enjoyed the friendliness that they created and we all hope that the stunning atmosphere will stay in everyone’s memory and it will be one of the most unforgettable experiences during their study at Kyamk.

IGDA is a professional non-profit organization, which is incorporated in the United States. It connects over 12,000 game developers world wide via so called Chapters in local communities and a new Chapter might just get started here in Kouvola. But what exactly does IGDA stand for? In their own words: "To advance the careers and enhance the lives of game developers by connecting members with their peers, promoting professional development, and advocating on issues that affect the developer community." Their focus is on improving the quality of life in making the process of game development easier and more pleasant, ensuring diversity, anti-censorship, empowering and advocating developers in business and legal issues as well as helping to set curriculum guidelines to provide students with the knowledge they need to successfully enter a career in the game industry. Chapters organize a lot of events, meet-ups and meetings for their members already, but IGDA itself organizes larger events and expos to bring together international members. One of those events is the annual Global Games Jam. Over period of 48 hours developers, artists and games designers work together in teams to create new games. With the game industry still being the fastest growing form of entertainment with gross revenues of approximately $63billion in the last year, IGDA is an opportunity for everyone interested in working in the game industry, to get the latest news thereof and meet new people and learn from their experiences. With the new program in Games Design here at Kyamk we all sincerely hope that a new Chapter can be successfully started. Everyone is warmly invited to take part in upcoming events and meetings. Ulla Puustelli -teacher-

Q:Hello Ulla. First of all, could tell about your background: where were you born, where did you study and your work experience?

A:I was born in Lappeenranta and spent my childhood there. I was a student of Turku Business School. Before I became a lecturer, I had been working Finnish post as a marketing manager, then in National Board of Trade and Consumer Interest and also in National Board of Education. I have the working experience in Finnish chemical company “Kemira”. Furthermore, I worked in Sweden and Malaysia but for a short period.

Q:You like to travel and do it often. What is your favorite country for vacation?

A:I have been in many places, but the nature of Costa Rica is some-

thing amazing. It is like a paradise. I like traveling around the UK and my favorite city is London. Also I’m crazy about Shanghai.

Q:And do you have other hobbies except traveling? A:I like reading. And can advise to our students read the book “Sinuhe egyptiläinen” or in the translation “The Egyptian” by Mika Waltari. Also I try going to the gym regularly. To be honest, I don’t like it a lot, but it is good to be in a physical shape. Another hobby is making cards. Last year with Slaveya Hämäläinen we did an exhibition in KYAMK’s library. And anyone could buy a Christmas card.

Q:Do you have any plans for Christmas and New Year? A:I will have a family dinner at home and spend all holidays with my relatives. Q:Do you remember any funny accidents in your life? A:I remember one, it was an international workshop. We were in Moscow and going to the airport

because our next connection was Sochi. But suddenly our bus broke. Can you imagine the situation: 65 people on the road with many pieces of luggage, the flight is in several hours. What to do? Several students, who are Russians, started catching cars and asking if they can give us a lift and baggage to the airport.You can imagine how many cars we stopped.

Q:And several questions about the following international workshop: is it going to be different than the previous one?

A:I can say that it will be as successful as previous. I’m sure that everyone will like the location this year – Sweden, Finland and Russia. We will surprise them with our cold Finnish winter (smiling).

Q:Why would it be so interesting and beneficial? A:International Workshop gives opportunity to meet new and interesting people. Finland is located

pretty far away from other European countries and people don’t have lots of interaction with foreigners. But with this project, students can practice their languages skills and meet new people. HowTo: During summer time you can make use of natural light to take brilliant photos but around this time, you can hardly find enough light since winter is knocking on the door. Here is an easy DIY for those who want to conduct product photography but do not have access to a proper studio.

What you need:

A cardboard box (as big as possible) A pair of scissors A paper knife White glue White paper (A3 size recommended) White tracing paper

First, cut the top of the cardboard box, leave out one side. Then, use carpet knife to cut square holes on the three topless sides, leaving about an inch at the edges. After that, attach tracing paper over the three holes using white glue. Be careful not to crumple the paper. Finally, place A3 paper inside the box to make the background. It depends on what background colour you want, either black or white.You might have to cut the paper so that it fits perfectly into the box. Basically you have done the studio! For the set up you need from two to three flashes, two on the sides and one above the box. If you donâ€™t have flashes you can use normal lamps instead. The lighter the object is, the better images you can get. Now you can set up your own mini studio at home!

MOVIE OF THE WEEK The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Director: Francis

Lawrence Genre: Action, Adventure, Sci-fi Starring: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark set out on a tour through the districts of Panem as victors of the 74th Hunger Games. As uprising and rebellion start to break out through districts, The Capitol prepares itself for a new hunger games, this time with an anniversary special: all previous victors of the hunger games must attend. Catching fire brings excitement and new adventures to the second installment of the Hunger Games trilogy. With an even more complex storyline, introducing new characters such as victors Finnick Odear and Johanna Mason, the film concentrates on themes of trust, loyalty, hope and love. This film fits into the category of the better book adaptations, making sure that loyal fans of the series penned by Suzanne Collins are not disappointed. Helping to create an even more intricate visual world to match the abundance of different settings and scenes in the film, Catching Fire has raised the bar to beautiful detailing, visible in the costume design and CGI work. Francis Lawrence has shown that a change in director does not always mean compromising quality, as he shows that he is fully qualified to step in as a new face to the film trilogy. Girls outshine in this installment of the franchise as Jennifer Lawrence shows her talent again by bringing more personality to her character, demonstrating that Katniss is more than an on screen attraction and securing her as a believable heroine. Jena Malone as the outspoken anti-heroine Johanna Mason and Willow Shields as Katniss's sister Everdeen further make Catching Fire an enjoyable watch. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is one of the most awaited films of the year and with good reason too, immerse yourself into this fantasy world and take time to explore this exciting sequel, you wont be dissapointed!
