EDITORIAL

All good things come to an end. I’m taking about the weather…the forecast for this week is kind of sad. (Which will be last week for you by the time you read this.) Today is also exactly three weeks until my exchange is over. And, probably, this is the last editorial I will write for Insider Magazine. The other editorial I wrote was at the beginning of my exchange. I wrote about the organized chaos in KYAMK Design department and about Sun Dogs (Parhelion). I have never seen the Sun Dog phenomenon again and I got quite used to the organized chaos in KYAMK.

Since this is the editorial and not an article about my time in Finland, I will now tell you what you can read in Insider this week. We give you a nice Sima recipe, which is a traditional beverage made to celebrate Vappu. We are also supposed to have Vappu in The Netherlands but we don’t celebrate it because we celebrated our queen’s birthday on the same day as Vappu. We have a king now but I think it’s still not going to happen. I am getting sidetracked again…. Anyway, we present you with a Salsa lunch break. We cover the ‘Let’s Get Dirty’. Of course we research the KYAMK staff again with a profile article. And you can read about the new Spiderman film.

The Sun Dogs were replaced by stunning sunset skies and the chaos transformed in to a relaxed atmosphere. For me Finland has been many things, but most of all it was an awesome life experience that I can recommend to anyone. If you are in doubt whether you should go on exchange, don’t be; do it.

Simply said: lots to read again so enjoy!

Tom

Salsa Lunch Break

How do you usually have lunch? You study the menu patiently; stand patiently in a queue, then walk a bit around with tray to find your place...but on Tuesday 29th of April our DE10’s Nikolaos Kitsoukis prepared Salsa lunch break where you could learn the essential moves and bring a bit of variety and feeling of summer to your daily lunch break. As it should be, everything was organised downstairs in Paja hall. A lot of volunteers came to get themselves into Salsa mood: enthusiastic and innovative teachers PäiviKorhonen and KirsiRouhiainen, who were actively inviting everyone as soon as they saw them, Sara Czabai and Hugh Clack, the photographers and our Patteri workers, Sabine Suorsa and Dario Vidal, who could not resist the energetic tunes. Students were also from all the years and disciplines: International Business from newcomers to graduates, designers from both Finnish and English Degree Programs and even guests who came with their friends. The sunny mood

was generated by everything: Nikolaos, dancers, and their bright and summery outfits. Though some have been doing salsa for the first time, they seemed to be grasping the tune faster. Some wanted to make salsa creative and tried trios. Previously, Nikolaos, or “Nick the Greek”, was organising some dance classes for students. Despite being busy graduating, he decided to give energy impulse to everyday school life. Basically, that is something he has always been doing. Let’s read our small interview we did with him to know more about his interesting life! Q: When did you start your interest in dancing? A: I started dancing when I was 15 but it was only for fun, about twice in a month and later at my 18 I found an opportunity to start at a professional level. Since my 20s I’ve been dancing also Argentine tango, break dance, hip-hop, then later some ballet and my favorite on that time

dance theater. Originally I started learning salsa from a friend when I first came to Finland. My favorite dance at the moment is salsa but also highly interesting is kizomba and bachata. Q: Have you ever created an event like this before? A: Once I had a group of students to teach them ballroom dances in a month, so they could dance in the independents day gala. Also I was running a dance group in our school for almost three years. Once or twice a week we were gathering and dancing different styles. However, even if every year we were starting with more and more people we were usually ending up with only few girls since most of the guys were giving up in the process! And about the Salsa Lunch Break, I think was the best until now! Great fun, lot of participants and also in a great space!

PARTY REVIEW

Let’s get dirty “What could be more awesome than one day where you are allowed to get dirty?”

Insider: Who do you think has the most influence in your style of playing?

How many times have you been in the student parties in Kouvola? (don’t lie, we all know it!) Well, almost all of them are organized by the student union and of course the theme of the party is different depending on the event. But last friday, we were all invited to the student party made by one really talented guy whom you all know as the guy who brings some crazy and amazing stuff to you. You’re almost there! One more hint, he is Australian. Boo ya! We are talking about the party on Friday “Let’s get dirty” hosted by Gerald Cicero or Gerald Torchz as his stage name is. Well, it happened to celebrate the end of the April fever, with Gerald playing as DJ the whole night. Encore was not as it used to be since he brought a whole new atmosphere to the club – the summer air of Australian Heats to Kouvola! Electronic dance music had been playing all night and it was really a pity that the party ended real soon at 3 a.m. and not surprisingly when everyone was shouting for one more song before it actually ended. In case you missed it, don’t worry- because there will be the final party of the year also organized by Gerald which will take place on May 16th in BarQ. After the Let’s get dirty party, we had the chance for a small interview with him.

Gerald: Well I had most influence by Hardwell, Tommy Trash, Deorro, Blasterjack... I love them. I don’t really like to play some soft or chill song (but you might hear it as I’m playing those at BarQ) I am more a Festival DJ which is I love to share the music I love and the energy to a thousand of people. I: Did you set up the party on Friday all by yourself? G: No I got help from my girlfriend and Mattea, they help me to make this party I: If you don’t mind, tell us a bit about what you will bring for the final party (Project glow). Is there any surprise for the students? G: For the final party it will be a 4 DJs playing from 3 different country... And we will play a lot of different song... But my advice better check this guy DJ C-Bee one of the best hip hop DJ’s and he will joining us on that day !! See you on the party and please be crazy! Text & Photos by Bac Le

KOUVOLA GOES FASHION

Kouvola Fashion Night

Many of you complain that everything closes early in Kouvola. However, Friday night on the 25th of April was an exception. On Friday the famous Fashion Night or Muodin Yรถ was held and visitors could enjoy their shopping until 23.00.

ried out by FunFit and Studio Dance Pit, giving the energy impulse to the viewers. Evening outfits designed by Olga Tuominen were represented. The outfits were for all the important occasions: graduation, wedding or gala. A bit of exotic was prepared by Saaga multicultural centre, when the models came out wearing Eastern, and African style dresses.

The event started at 18.00 near Kouvola City Hall (Kaupungintalo). You would have been surprised by the amount of people coming there. Also you would have been surprised by how many young people actually came out from, seemingly, nowhere. You would have been wondering where those people have been hiding for all this time! They were wandering around the small Manski shopping street hoping to see if anything happens next.

Visitors could enjoy dance and fashion shows in Amarillo, Hansa shopping centre,Kouvolan Pukimo or drop to some pop-up stores in the centre. It was the day when Kouvola was more open, crowded and even attractive in some way. What is more, the event was free of charge. So, wait for autumn to see the next Fashion Night.

The show was a set of dance, music and fashion shows. Girls with hairstyles designed by Hiustropiikki hairdressing salon did a small dance performance. Dance performances were also car-

RECIPE

SIMA(MEAD) Mead is a beverage traditionally made in finland for the celebration of Vappu, the 1st of may. In finnish it’s called sima.

INGREDIENTS 4 liters of water 250 g brown sugar 250 g sugar juice from 1 – 2 lemons 1/5 teaspoon of yeast (a piece about a size of a pea) raisins

Boil half of the water and pour it on the sugars Add rest of the water and the lemon juice, let it cool down a bit. Soak the yeast in a small amount of warm water and mix it in. Let the mead fermentate in room temperature for one day. Bottle the mead. Add a teaspoon of

Tips: You need a large container to make the mead. I used a bucket with a lid (true story). You can also change the proportions of the sugars to make the beverage darker or lighter. Remember, that the pressure builds up in the bottles, so don’t use a too tight cap or release the pressure once in a while.

sugar in each bottle and some raisins. Mead is ready when the raisins surface. In cool place it takes about a week and in room temperature a few days. Keep the mead in the cool and use it whithin a week. Text & Photo: Reetta Somppi

PROFILE

HETA VILEN

students, for their thesis works, some training things. And also we are working in Virolahti area.

First tell me about you background... I was born in Valkola where I live still but I have been travelling quite a lot after I graduated from high school. I was in Australia and also in USA.

Why did you choose this field for work? I planned to become a sea captain but that did not happen (laughing). I studied business and I visited other countries then I was working in that field and that gave me the interest to study more business. So, I started studying in KyAMK and they offered me work. That is why I am here.

So,tell me about your profession. What are you doing here in KyAMK? I am a business partnership coordinator and also project manager. Mainly I try to find some companies who could give work for our students and also some big projects.

Tell about your planes for future... Next week I will be in Lapland, I will have my winter holiday, finally. As for the more distant future, I would like to study more.

What is the best thing in your job? What do you like more? I think the best thing about my job is the students. They are so nice and it is really interesting to work with them and to see how they grow up with our projects. And the worst thing is that I am so busy my day is full and sometimes very long but I like it anyway. I really like my job and the atmosphere.

To sum up, could you give a small advice for students how to be happy and energized all the time? I think you should only think positive. There are so many positive things in everybody’s life and also Kyamk is a very nice place. Enjoy it!

Do you have any interesting projects now? Yes, quite many. We are doing a big project in Stockholm – Saint-Petersburg way. There are a lot of possibilities for our

HOW TO

3D GLASSES How to make 3D glasses at home? Probably many of us remember their first movie in 3D format and emotions arising during playback. Currently this technology is very popular among movie buffs. Many people buy 3D TVs and watch movies at home. This article should help you make these glasses quickly and easily at home. There are cases when the Internet emerge volumetric images or videos but without 3D glasses it loses its effect. And you cannot buy them anywhere, in fact nowhere.

Be aware that:

If your monitor has pale color

TOOLS Markers (blue, green and red) Transparent tape and a thick transparent film Scissors, paper and pencil

reproduction, then you probably will not be able to see the volume effect. Do not forget that for the left eye should be red glass film, and for the right blue-green. Make sure the tape that you have been using did not leave air bubbles under it, otherwise it would be harder to see through the glasses.

METHOD 1 - draw the glasses 1. Draw the frame and earpieces on a cardboard. 2. Bend the cardboard in half. Cut out cardboard glasses without lenses form. 3. Make 3 squares out of transparent film with the size a little bit bigger of the windows that were left in the “cardboard glasses”. 4. Paint on one square of the film with blue and green markers on both sides, paint the other film red on both sides. 5. Tape over these colored squares with tape on both sides and glue to cardboard forms, glue two cardboard shapes together.

METHOD 2 - print the glasses 1. The easiest way to make 3D glasses is to find already an existing layout for printing in internet. You can use such queries as “3D glasses die cut” or “3D glasses in vector”. 2. Cut from the printout the form. 3. Repeat steps 3-6 from the previous method. Glasses are ready, you can start watching a movie or 3D volumetric images. Enjoy! Text & Photos: Iuliia Safonova

In the course of the movie he comes back into contact with his childhood friend Harry Osborn (Dane DeHaan), the heir of Oscorp where his girlfriend Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) works. Everyone who might think that this might be the time for some cliché love triangle is obviously wrong since Marvel seems to have learned that there are other ways to create an interesting story. Unfortunately, they have not yet figured out how to come up with original origin stories for their villains. Both these villains are boringly trivial and are driven by what they consider “betrayal” on the heroes side. Too bad really. The action on the other hand is as amazing as the title suggests until that point where… Well that would be spoiler. Let’s just say they could have not done the “thing” because after the only thing that saved it was the after-credit scene which is hopefully an indicator for something bigger in the future. If it isn’t it was still really nice to announce the next up and coming Marvel movie. Then again, wasn’t the rumor that Spidy was supposed to cameo in the next Avengers movie? This is either the beginning of something beautiful and exciting or fan-baiting. I need clarity: if somebody has seen the movie and knows what is going on, please let me know.

Overall the movie is quite good, better than most of what DC has done in the past year. On the other hand it was not overwhelming or outstanding. Character development through major character death is not something to be proud of. Nope, not cool at all.
