EDITORIAL
Since our typical Insider editorial is a set of painful topics such as depression, boredom, (the lack of) life in Kouvola, burnout, fear, Thesis (yes, it has to be written with the capital) and etc. I will not break the tradition and write about…finding a job. Those who tried finding any job have undoubtedly faced the situation when they “need an experience to gain the experience”. But do not sigh or burst into cry now, since there are possibilities to gain some experience alternative to the real one. An article in Forbes (Smith, J., 2013) advises you to try such option as volunteer work. The study by LindedIn shows that one out of five employers considers volunteer work as a valuable experience. They consider volunteers as initiative and skillful individuals, motivated towards their field. The first one is to take part in any public organization. You are the lucky one because
you can join a student union, become a tutor or write for student magazine. In fact, the conditions are close to real working life, especially when it refers to teamwork. As an Insiderist I can say that you have to be responsible for submitting good quality work on time in order to enhance all the production process and you have to be able to plan corporate time. Participating in a workshop or a seminar can get some potential employers interested in you as an active, versatile and creative person. Just do not forget to record your participation and your ideas! And remember that “the world doesn’t care anymore what you know; all it cares is what you can do with what you know “(Wagner, T. ; cited in Friedman, T. 2013). In our school there are a lot of exciting events such as Meduusa Festival, Start-Up workshop and a possibility to listen to Mr. Olli Rehn. Stay tuned!

FILM FESTIVAL
MEDUUSA FESTIVAL Text & photos:Tom Fekkes The Meduusa Festival is a film festival organized by communication students from Kyamk. The festival was held in Meduusa Studio. Each year the festival has a theme, this year’s theme was Change. The festival offered a looped viewing of three short films created by the students. People could then vote for the best short film. The winner was to be announced later that day.
The contestants were: //Konsta Virtanen: Lapland Snow //Erik Manninen and Vilma Hannén: A Better Life //Mikael Heikinheimo:The Final Stop
Erik and Vilma won with their short film: A Better life, congratulations! The competition was open for everyone, so if you are interested in making short films you should pay close attention next year. The festival also provided us with lectures from internationally award-winning documentary film director Jouko Aaltonen and film director Sami Laitinen, whose film “Muutoksii” (which means “Changes”) is now in cinemas. The lectures took about one hour each, and afterwards they allowed questions from the audience. Of course the lectures were in Finnish so it was kind of difficult for me to follow, however it was quite clear that the first lecture was about changes in movies and how technology had its impact. The second lecture was mostly about his movie “Muutoksii” and the problems they ran in to while making it. Besides film there was also section about games, being an audio-visual media festival and not just a film festival. There you could play on consoles from different generations, which brought back some good memories. All in all the festival was very enjoyable and well organized. A tip for next year could be more English content so that international students can enjoy it even more and an easier to find timetable about what is happening and when. For anyone even slightly interested in audio-visual media I can definitely recommend it!

BUSINESS MANAGEMENT
17th international workshop HOSTED IN FINLAND
The International Workshop is a yearly business management game organised by the network of universities that Kyamk is part of. There are eleven countries in the network and each year a different country is chosen to host the event.
discover the capital of Sweden. The group stayed there for two days and we spent loads of time on walking tours all around the city. Taking a night ferry was a new experience to the majority of the group and we had fun trying to find space for ourselves and our massive luggage in the tiny cabins. After all the hustle, celebrating the beginning of the workshop the group headed to the disco and we danced until the last bar closed, making the ferry truly ‘the boat that rocked’.
This year the workshop was organised by Kyamk in cooperation with South Westphalia University of Applied Sciences in Hagen, Germany and Finland was chosen as the host country. To make the experience more dynamic and interesting, visits to Sweden and Russia have been included in the programme.
The main part of the workshop took place in Nurmes in Finland where we stayed in a hotel for nine days. The workshop is a business management simulation game that uses a unique software developed to simulate situations in the market. All the participants were mixed and there were ten teams (‘companies’) competing against each other. Each team had to sell three different products on four different markets, trying to achieve the highest accumulated profit over eight periods that would count in the simulation as quarters of a real year. We had two period sessions every day, making it a really tough four days of team work, decision
There were 11 teams from the following countries taking part in the workshop: Finland, Russia, Germany, Portugal, Switzerland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Indonesia, UAE, USA and China. Representing Kyamk at the workshop were: Laura Koivisto, Layal Chahrour, Salla Kytömäki, Ekaterina Perfilyeva, Huy Dong Pham and Mohsin Rony, all studying business. Our workshop journey started in Stockholm where all the teams met each other at the airport and headed off to

making and applying our theoretical knowledge to practice.
at Kouvola City Hall, welcomed by the mayor of Kouvola.
The game was very challenging and soon after the start we realised that it was not just about our knowledge but also the ability to guess situations in the market. In the middle of the game periods we had a full day free of playing and that was when we had a company visit to Nunna Uuni Oy, the producer of stone fireplaces. We were given a full tour around the company’s premises and were able to see the full production chain. Later on that day we drove to Koli national reserve to observe the beautiful nature of lake Koli and the Koli mountains. Climbing all the way up to the highest point was tricky but the view was stunning and it was all worth the journey.
The next day we travelled to Saint-Petersburg to discover that northern capital of Russia. After a short walking tour around the city center, the participants went for having some traditional Russian food in the restaurants along Nevsky, the main street of the city. Within our stay in Russia we have also visited Catherine’s Palace in Tsarskoye Selo, the winter residence of Russian emperors. The last stop of our journey was Helsinki where we had a walking tour around the city and could not stop taking selfies at the Senate Square. All in all, the workshop has been a truly amazing experience: we have all made lots of friends, we had a lot of fun together and we have all learnt a lot about business management by practicing our knowledge. Make sure you do not miss your chance to apply for the workshop next year: that is to take place next spring in Indonesia!
When the eight periods of the game were played, the workshop participants headed to Kyamk in Kouvola where the final round of the game was played. The finalist teams had their presentations but the winner was only around in the evening when all the participants had a reception dinner

PATTERI NETWORK
START-UP WORKSHOP or Kyamk´s got talent(again)
Text:Polina Racheeva Photos:Mattea Näveri & Sabine Suorsa(Patteri) “Anything that won’t sell, I don’t want to invent. Its sale is proof of utility, and utility is success” . If you agree with words of world-famous innovator and inventor Thomas Edison , then taking part in StartUp Workshop organized by our evergreen Patteri’s Sabine Suorsa and Antti Viitanen would have been the right option for you. The event was held on the 11th and 12th of April in Metsola Campus of Kymenlaakso UAS in Kotka. Day 1.11 April 2014.Let’s get ready to rumble Our two international cars drove us to Metsola campus, where they settled in a small auditorium with everything needed for generating good ideas: coffee, tea, snacks and support from energetic seminar coaches. The “Master” was Fabian Sepulveda, an entrepreneur with over 15 years of working experience in Engineering, Management Consulting and Investment Banking, and also Startup Coach in Aalto University . His irreplaceable colleagues were Laura Honkapirtti and Povilas Valiauga , who were also mentoring entrepreneurship programs in Aalto University. The audience was also very international with representatives from Finland, Greece, Russia, Ukraine, Austria, Vietnam, Croatia and Nigeria. The coaches were also very international: Fabian is a Chilean American, Laura is a Finn, Povilas is a Lithuanian. The aim of the workshop was, undoubtedly, to come up with an idea, but coming up with an
idea was only the first part of it. Your idea has to be not just a product or just a service, but it has to be a start-up. The workshop makes its participants think entrepreneurially and create necessary networks. And how to network best? By productively…partying! Yes, the organizers provided participants with food for body and for thought. The first day started by pitching all the possible and hard-but-possible ideas coming to mind. The best moment here was that the pitchers of ideas were the recruiters. In short time you had to realize whom you need to recruit: designers, business people, programmers or game designers. And you had to use all your charm to attract people to your venture. Further on, teams had to finalize their idea and start working on the prototypes. Day 2. 12 April 2014. The next day started with good breakfast preparing with energy for another challenge of the day. It was a decisive day since the start-ups finally had to create a business case of their idea: set their idea into Business Model Canvas, present their idea and pitch, pitch, pitch. Business Model Canvas helps a start up to decide on the clear customer segmentation, problem definition, resources, suppliers
8
and streams of financing. Problem well defined is problem half solved. But the most dramatic part is pitching the idea to investors. In this part an entrepreneur has to stand before the hungry eyes of “investing dragons” and prove that their idea has weight. Be ready to face questions as “so, what the hell you are selling?”, that is when you realize how good you understand your own idea. Teams were brainstorming on how to put their idea best into practice, push it forward and finally present it. The bid is free ticket to StartUp Weekend in Helsinki, which is held between 9th and 11th of May. The next step is Cambridge Start up camp. Fair enough to make the first step, is it not? Now, time for drumroll…The winners for the Start-Up weekend are…Kyamk students. Indeed, Kyamk has got talent. The first winner is the Team “Give a Gift” to a friend , with Daria Nikulina, Antti Viitanen and Olanyan “Ola” Isiak. Their idea has been getting a lot of attention since already March, when they made a video for it during Global Service Jam. The second winner was a “RobinZone” survival box team, consisting of Polina Racheeva, Iita Saarva, Thach Vo and Sami Helin. Similarly to the previous team, they came up with idea also during Global Service Jam. To sum up, in order to have a Start-up you have to Start Up Now! Your amazing team will help you to keep your idea alive and active!
PROFILE
ANTTI VIITANEN Patteri Network Text & Photos: Mattea Näveri make it grow and make it a stable thing in Kyamk.I enjoy this and the team work within.
What does Patteri exactly do? We are here to support the students in their ideas and plans. We want to expand a lot. We want the students to come to us and tell us their thoughts and ideas nd for us to help them achieve the ideas and goals. We have these ambassadors, which are students who are spreading the word and ideas of Patteri into their own field. We would definitely like more of them. We are constantly changing and getting better
How about your education? Any plans for more? I was considering my masters degree. If I do it I will maybe do it at Kyamk. But who knows. No current plans really. I am too busy at the moment to think about it too much. You participated in the Start-Up Workshop. Would you yourself build a start up? Yes I would, I like the idea of it and might build something in the future if I find some good enough idea that I feel truly passionate about. I do want to do business more.
Can please explain what position it is that you have in Patter Network? Well, that’s a good one... People keep asking me, but it is a little ebit hard to explain.I guess I am the person that is building up the Patter Network. It started in 2013. And Iwas asked if I would do it and I also sort of volunteered to do it. I graduated here in 2011then I also worked for Kymi design. I graduated as muotoilija-viestinta, it is product design andcommunication.
Do you like what you do? Oh,yes. I like my job. I am excited every day to go to work. I like doing things extra, which is why I am so busy. But it really is good. I really like meeting new people and getting inspired. I like meeting very good students are excited to work and get me excited to work in return. I get motivation from them as well.
What do you do when you are not busy with Patteri? In my free time..I work. I have my own Toiminimi, company name, since 2012. I subcontract for other design studios. Manly I do it for product design and industrial design.
Is there something you would like to say to our students? We are looking for interns. Mainly for marketing. We currently have Niko who does our video graphics. Then we also have Kalle who does our graphic design. If someone is missing some internship credits, they can come and talk to us and we could help them find a place with us or somewhere else possibly.
Do you have any future plans? Not really anything big, or thought out. I am mostly now focusing on Patteri Network. I am trying to really build it,

Going into Russell Crowe a movie post Les Misérables you always have to remind yourself: Don’t worry, he is not going to sing in this one… I was so wrong. Anyway, tag along as Noah and his family travel, hike and run through, rocky deserts, stony deserts and windy deserts. Two hours of watching a guy build an ark and being all hell bend on ending all human life on the planet a the while arguing with really dirty relatives hiding in the woods and only keeping at bay because of the guardian things who are protecting Noah and his family. Apparently I should read the bible again because I had totally forgotten about all the cool multi-armed and -legged angels. I am pretty sure the vatican did not get to proof-read the script. There is nothing wrong with a bit of drama-intensifying free interpretation of the written word - in this case it did not work - at all - not even a little bit.

The best thing about the movie was, however, the plot keywords on imdb. I will let you in on some of the magic: #singing in a cave #sword and sandal #dysfunctional family #stabbed to death #eating live animal #son hits father and #dove with branch in its mouth - and this also sums up the movie pretty accurately I’m afraid.
