EDITORIAL

Spring has finally come. I am not talking about time change but the weather and scenery outside. Oh, wait...Finnish weather can trick you once again. Remember the time when we had 5 months of winter and then a week full of sunshine and blue skies. And then it started to snow again! Hopefully, it does not happen again this time. We can start thinking about BBQ or picnic outside or even planning to go to Tykkimäki when the weather gets warmer.

(Just ask Forrest Gump *wink*) Here in Finland, the traditional Easter dessert is Mämmi which is made of water, rye flour, and powdered malted rye. The funny thing is that there is actually a Finnish society for this food. Despite its weird look, it still tastes good if you eat it cold with milk or sugar, but with cream is so much better. This week’s issue is about a little bit of everything... We’ve got info about the fashion week,a photo exibition, guest lectures during the week 13, and even a wood exhibition which was arranged by one of our staff members Mattea Naveri along with the rest of her class, DE12 in Lahti’s ProPuu gallery, showing works of Kyamk’s students using a new type of a wood joint called sormiliitos.

Easter is coming and, probably, you might have noticed that they began to sell chocolate eggs in the supermarkets. Talking about chocolate eggs, my favorite one would be Kinder Surprise. I don¨t like the chocolate, just the toy inside it.You never know what you’re going to get until you open the egg.

Have a nice week!

LECTURE REPORT

GUEST LECTURES @ KYAMK

ite countries to go to and give lectures because people are well-educated. Friedrich-Karl Feyerabend found out about Kyamk via a friend at an Irish university which is also partner in the ERASMUS program. Both lecturers have made a point of stating how important it is to go out and see other countries, get into contact with other cultures even if it is just for one semester. And of course, regarding this they did not fail to encourage the students to pay a visit to their respective home universities, so please do:

Last week some of us had the opportunity to listen in on three interesting lectures held by foreign representatives of two partner universities of Kyamks. The 1st one was held by Bernd Hofmann, a professor for Geopolitics and macro- and microeconomics at the Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1. The 2nd and 3rd lectures were held by Friedrich-Karl Feyerabend whose lectures at his home university, the FH Gießen, include mostly Business Law. Both of them have been to Finland a few times over the past years, witnessing the changes in the campuses internal and external structure. Bernd Hofmann when asked stated Finland is one of his favour-

He gave an outlook on what professional life can look like in a fun and welcoming environment such as the game industry with a work life that seems to have adapted to the change in demand for Generation Y in regards to work-life-balance.

PHOTO EXHIBITION

A LIFE JOURNEY THROUGH DOORS

Text: Bac Le Photos: Hoang Anh Nguyen People are traveling a lot. That is the fact. For some of them, life is a journey and every place they have been always gives them different experiences and offbeat feelings. They capture the moments by different ways, writing diary or taking pictures of the scenes or people there. Last week, our university teacher Hugh Clack (it would be a shame if you are a business student and do not know who he is!) had a photographic exhibition of doors in different places he had been visiting. The exhibition is called “A Life Journey through Doors” and it takes place in the university library until 17.4.2014

All the pictures were captured over the span of 10 years, from 2004 to 2014.You may ask some questions like why capturing doors instead of local people or scenes of the places. Hugh simply took them because they were nice subjects and he even lots more. Even the name of the exhibition is “A Life Journey”, the whole thing is not his life journey, or anyone’s in particular, and it is just something that came to his mind when he tried to describe the show of photos. Every door has its own meaning and story behind it, which Hugh has tried to express in the handout that comes along with the exhibition. The journey begins, or as Hugh described “Where it all begins” from the first door he took in Tallinn, Estonia. The funny thing is that in the photograph, the name of the street is “Kohtu” which actually means “womb” in Finnish. Photographs are obviously subjective and art and what one person feels do not mean that others have to feel the same. Those feelings are different and unique. You just come there, and take a look beyond the images and image what is behind each door - the life within if you like. Hugh told us that he will be more than happy if people enjoy the photographs and even if they manage to find the story of each door then that is a bonus!

WOOD EXHIBITION

UUDET SYYT SORMILIITOKSIA IDEAPAJASTA Text & Photos: Mattea Näveri Last Friday, Lahti’s ProPuu gallery hosted an exhibition opening with the theme ”sormiliitos”, in English ”fingerjoint”. This joint, invented by a Finnish man Tuomo Poutanen, has so far been used only in construction most specifically in roof construction. The idea and concept for this project was to introduce the joint in standard items, furniture and things we use on daily basis. The exhibition was organized and supported by Kouvola Innovation Oy, Liimaristikko Oy, Kiilto Oy and Kyamk. The main person behind the exhibition is Jukka-Pekka Keronen from Kinno. Along with him, DE12’s students organized the exhibition and the opening ceremony.

will be using it more and more. The joint creator himself was very grateful and happy to have seen such lovely work and inventiveness behind his innovation. He thanked them all kindly in his short speech and encouraged more usage of the finger joint. The chosen people were; Marjo Tauriainen with her Divaani, Lauri Rasimus with X-foot, team Kisko with R-stool, Nhan Nguyen with Transformer, Miska Karvinen with Keittiötikkaat, Rebecca Squires with the Squid Chair, Mikko Palmqvist with chair and Jani Rossinen with his table.

The designs were carefully chosen by Pekka Malinen and Leevi Markkula and then produced with the special joint in our school. Most of the designers are from our adult’s group wood design, however, two were also chosen from the group DE12.

The exhibition will be open until the 29th of April. You can see it in Lahti, at Satamankatu 2A, 15140 Lahti, Monday-Friday 10-17, or Saturdays 10-14 (they are closed 18.04.-21.04.for the Easter break).

The opening ceremony was very relaxing. There were not many people, but enough to chat and look around. Supported by the smooth jazz background and a little champagne everyone seemed to have a good time. Our lovely hostesses and caterers Daria Nikulina and Maria Vvedenskaya did an extremely good job and people kept coming back for more food. With a bit of toasting and some short speeches mingling went on for about four hours before everyone slowly started departing for their homes. The gallery itself is so mesmerizingly beautiful that it was worth going just to see the space itself. Inspired by this joint and the possibilities it gave the wood designers, I am sure they

PATTERI NETWORK

PROTO KICK OFF

Text & Photos: Bac Le “Have you ever wondered how creative you are and in what way you can find it? Patteri can be your solution!” You probably have heard about the Global Service Jam which happened in Kyamk a month ago, in which people gathered together and “saved the world in 48 hours”. Basically, the idea of the jam is to get people together and share ideas between them, and to create a working prototype that actually works (well, of course not a boring presentation you have in the university). With the success of the last event, Patteri decided to have another similar session which was called Proto Kickoff workshop in two days from Thursday 3rd April till Friday. Two days seemed a short time but we actually did come up with amazing ideas (at least we think so!) On Thursday, the workshop started at 14.00 and everyone from both design and business department and also guys studying IT in Kotka were participating in, and of course, Sabine Suorsa

(“The Big Boss”) and Antti Viitanen could not miss the chance to be in this event. People were divided into groups to brainstorm idea about creating a service design for the future. The main fields were human security and well-being. After the day, we did come up with lots of new things which sounded crazy and brilliant at the same time! We also got help from Kyamk teacher Ari Lindeman when he came to support the brainstorming process. It is a pity that we could not tell you guys the entire concepts of our ideas because of the censorship, but one was about travel activities tracking services for backpackers. Even though we worked on different projects, the team worked together as much as possible. And of course, laughter and glee were in the air all the time! We do think that this kind of event should be held more often because people are getting the chance to share ideas and also test themselves how creative and innovative they are. If you want to experience what we did, join the Startup Summer Camp which lasts for 10 weeks starting from 2nd of June. PROFILE

LIISA LUOTONEN Senior Lecturer Text & Photo: Polina Racheeva Could you tell a few words about yourself and how did you end up in Kymenlaakso UAS? I started in Kyamk in 2001 when my family moved from Uusikaupunki to Kouvola. Previously I was a lecturer in Uusikaupunki Commercial College and Turku UAS, because they were located in the same campus. What subjects did you lecture there? Marketing and Logistics, I used to be a head of the program in Logistics in Uusikaupunki. How did you get interested in Marketing Logistics? In Uusikaupunki there is a car factory Valmet Automotive, which was our god company and together with them we set up the business logistics program and we established close collaboration with them. The more I learnt about it, the more interested I was. But basically my major in university was Marketing.

From the first sight Marketing and Logistics do not seem to have such a tight connection… Actually they do, because a marketer has to know a lot about distribution, transportation and customer oriented processes. Supply Chain Management can be used as a competitive tool. Perhaps, they indeed do not look too compliant. Let’s move on to the question of logistics. Currently the transportation routes are becoming more saturated due to growing global trade. What kind of challenges do companies face? I think that those are environmental issues, which are going to influence on the global scale, and questions of green logistics. Ethical issues are also a crucial factor. E-commerce and internet shopping will affect on the local logistics a lot. Small shops are currently having problems and Finnish postal services are predicted to be decreasing a lot in the future. Though, in the logistics magazines most discussions are about sustainability. And undoubtedly, the financial crisis will affect on everything.

9

What companies should do, in your opinion? Well, the only thing I could say is that they have to control their supply chain. Brands are strongly affected if something happens in the supply chain. Since the importance of logistics issues grows, do you think there have to be more subject in the curricula related to this? I think everyone studying business has to know at least the basics. You once mentioned that you sail as a hobby. Is there any specific place where you like to go sailing? We have a sailing boat in Loviisa. We sail in the Gulf of Finland, Gulf of Bothnia, in the archipelago nearby Stockholm…all around Northern Baltic. Actually, it is our family hobby, my children, I think “grew up in the sailing boat”.

In a futuristic world, where people are grouped based on their personalities, Tris finds out that she doesn't fit in. After discovering she is a divergent, a fearless group hiding within other fractions, she must learn to try and fit in or run from a society threatening to destroy her and all her kind. Divergent is a continuum of the young adult fantasy genre that has been trending in the past years. With its fierce heroin, Tris is very much a hybrid between Katniss from Hunger Games and scifi film Host character Melanie Stryder. The film takes a lot of ideas from pre-existing science fiction films, giving nods to the classic dystopian image of personality eradication. Spiced up with an easily predictable love story and we have yet another blockbuster version of Twilight. To the fantasy nerds, Divergent has an interesting back story that sparks interests as to what else there might be to the futuristic city of Chicago. Of course, there are more films to follow: Divergent is based on a book series, can we see the pattern developing here? If you are trying to find an excuse to watch this film, look forward to Shailene Woodleys performance for entertaining acting that has almost as many facial expressions as Kristen Stewart. But if you are like me and don't seem to fit into the ideal fractions that make up this film, become divergent and watch far in the back, preferably with a big tub of pop corn and something to keep you entertained.
