Hallo! There’s been a lot of interesting things happening lately: celebration of St. Patrick’s Day, WINOIL Seminar in Kotka and many other things that we will throw light on in this issue.
wheels, just like in old times! It has three cars with exquisite, antique interior of “Orient Express” style: restaurant car, wagon country-bar and car showroom. Trips on this train from Kouvola are arranged not so often, about twice a year. But the interesting fact is that you don’t have to wait and follow the schedule. You can plan your nostalgic journey by your own, renting a steam locomotive, and hit the road when it will be convenient. Its owners will take care of everything: will stock up on coal and water, think over and agree on a route. So that would be a nice idea to try.
Further you will find as well, section on what to do in Kouvola and I cannot resist to share one curious fact about the city, where we are studying. In train depot of Kouvola there’s a unique old steam locomotive, which was made in the middle of the last century. Only 22 locomotives with a steam engine were manufactured in Finland before the age of diesel locomotives. Currently there are only two in working condition. One of them - a locomotive “ Ukko-Pekka 1009” - is ready to go from Kouvola, huffing and banging
Interesting things surround us. Have a nice week!

LECTURE REPORT
WINOIL
Sea transportation is often a choice for many businesses due to a variety of reasons: relatively low cost in comparison to other modes, possibility to transport large volumes of different cargo types to overseas markets and the capacity for heavy weight goods.
Even though there have been no spills reported in the Gulf of Finland, the need for safe navigation and risk management becomes crucial. The representatives from Aalto University (Risto Jalonen, Floris Goerlandt and Osiris Valdez Banda) introduced methods for the risk assessment and prevention of hazardous events (when the accident actually occurs) and hazardous situations (which lead to an accident). They stated that the eastern part of the gulf is more difficult because of thicker ice layers.
Such importance of the transportation makes countries create international agreements on marine safety and navigation, since marine traffic is getting more saturated. As accidents happen, emergency measures also have to be taken. In order to discuss all those issues, WINOIL seminar was held on the 26th of March 2014 in Maritime centre Vellamo, Kotka.
Justiina Halonen from the Seafaring and Logistics department of Kymenlaakso UAS presented a set of measures after the oil spill occurs. Despite the seeming difficulty, the liquidation of oil in winter can sometimes be easier, since ice on the surface prevents further oil spreading. She presented different types of oil spills and the methods of removing them. Actually, Mr. Gennady Semanov from Central Research and Design Institute confirmed that the probability of spills is lower, but accidents are more probable to occur in winter. Most oil spills come from tankers. He also mentioned different types of accident situations (like grounding and collision) common for winter time.
The name of the seminar “WINOIL” comes from the words “winter” and “oil”. The aim of this event was to exchange information on marine traffic safety, prevention and liquidation of oil spills and accidents in winter time. Some marine safety issues get complicated because of ice. According to the words of Mr. Hermanni Backer, the Professional Secretary of Helsinki Commission (further referred as HELCOM), the marine traffic is tightening in the Gulf of Finland.
Anton Krummet and Natalia Pozdniakova from EcoProject told that the most vulnerable regions in Gulf of Finland are adjacent to archipelagos and actually, most of the spills start in those areas. In such case constant observation is needed. Meri Hietala and Pekka Rusanen from Finnish Environment institute presented their BORIS system, which enhances the data collection in the Gulf of Finland area. To sum up, the event confirmed the importance of risk management and international legislation. All the accidents are cross-border; therefore, the guidelines of international agreements have to be followed. Environmental education has to be brought to schools and universities. For students particularly, this event could give an opportunity to track changes in current international policies and get a broader outlook on business operations. Text & Photos: Polina Racheeva

ABOUT kouvola
TOURIST IN YOUR OWN CITY
Text:Tom Fekkes, Photos: Mattea Näveri Kouvola, not the city that is on your top ten places to visit list. Not a surprise since it is visually comparable to Chernobyl. Now Chernobyl might be on that list, but that is probably only the case when you are into photography. Kouvola’s official website is quite enthusiastic when it comes to Kouvola. Which isn’t very odd, who wouldn’t promote their own city? The first line they write is ‘’Kouvola has everything!” Now that is not entirely true, an airport for example is not something that Kouvola has. Wikipedia mentions that Kouvola is indeed infamous for it’s Soviet-like architecture and high crime rate, but that is something the website fails to mention. Visitkouvola.fi is a website dedicated to tourists visiting the great city of Kouvola. They provide you with a map showing all kinds of things you can do in-andaround Kouvola. And you better like churches, because unless you have a car there is not a whole lot they suggest you
can do. The site provides us with eight ‘things’ in Kouvola itself, of which four are churches. Two are about the railway, which is something that catches you attention immediately if you look at a map of Kouvola. It has like a million railway tracks. One is an art museum and one is a radio museum.
capture the moment, and realizing I need to save up for a descent camera. Another thing I really like about Kouvola are its quirky shops. If you like thrift shopping Kouvola is definitely a good place to be. Also small shops with all kinds of Russian products are enjoyable to walk through.
Because this article should be about the awesome little gems that Kouvola hides underneath it’s Soviet architecture, I won’t go into what you can do around Kouvola if you have a car. So what are these little gems? Well I’m pretty sure that kind of differs for each person, so this is only a reflection of my experience. The most obvious one for me is the sky, and this might be more of a Finland thing than a Kouvola thing, but hey, Kouvola is kind of my Finland. Anyhow, the sky, I am still surprised how often I find myself standing still and looking at a sky, colored from bright yellow to the most beautiful dark blue. With on one side moonlight and stars, and the other side a sun that is about to say goodnight. I usually find myself trying to make my phone
Kouvola’s architecture. Definitely a thing. It’s not pretty; I would say it is kind of like modern art. It doesn’t look very good but somehow it is kind of appealing if the right light shines on it. And of course it is all a matter of angle. Under the right angle, anything can look (I won’t say pretty) interesting. Another thing I love is when it’s golden hour (that is when the sun makes this amazing light just before it goes down for the night) and you go to the tunnel that goes underneath the train tracks, if you climb up the sides, and stand next to the train tracks, you will have the most amazing view. Bring your mp3 player, put ‘Sweet Disposition by Temper Trap’ on it. Play that. Sit there. Wait for sun to go down.

and AEE, coach and investor for many startups and a sought after speaker for many events, Will’s passion is to enable startups to go for it and to go big. Those two lecturers will inspire you and give you an idea, what it means to create something and how to be innovative and productive at the same time. They teach you who to do it right. The most important point is the motivation and the idea, there are no crazy ideas; there is just the wrong plan behind it. So why not use the possibility of changing something and doing something for you. This possibility is not for school or is not a school´s project, it is something for your own personal development, it brings you further in life, if you use this once in a lifetime chance.
PROFILE
HANNI HÄTINEN Campus assistant
Text & Photo: Mattea Näveri ing and rearranging things at home. I like cleaning my home on Thursday or Friday and buying some fresh flowers and enjoying my home for the weekend. My husband always laughs, as sometimes, he comes home, and the entire house looks different because I decided that the sofa should change its place. I also really enjoy travelling and travel whenever I am able to. I am always surprised and astonished to hear when people are asked about their hobbies. They start counting things, so many of them. I always think to myself; do you really do all these things? It’s quite impossible I think,
What does it mean to be a campus assistant? It means many different things. I deal with different things every day, depending what is needed. I book spaces, arrange contacts with business associates with the school, talk to students, etc. I like things to stay moving. I don’t like the same thing every day, which is why I enjoy my job. My favourite part of the job though, is the students. Seeing them come and go, meet them, watch them graduate and progress in their lives. What did you do before Kyamk and how did yu get here? I used to study in Salppauselankatu Merkkonomi, commercial college. I studed there to be a secretary. It still exists, but nowadays a bit different. I worked in many companies after I graduated some big and some small. But I always worked. I like working. I came to Kyamk in 1996 and I worked at the info desk there. I got there by chance, as I first went through this English language program where I studied and then I had my work practice in this Viestinta part of Kyamk where I met Teuvo( who still works here). After I was done with my internship, they needed help, and Teuvo suggested to me to apply for the position at the info desk, so I applied and I have been here ever since.
Your favourites? Book: Richard Bach “Illusion”. This book changed my life. It changed the way I think and the way I do things. It made me rethink my attitude towards life and the world. I highly recommend it. Movie: “Neverending story” always makes me happy. I can watch it over and over again and enjoy it every time. Place to travel: Egypt. I love it there. But unfortunately I don’t go often anymore because there is no travelling agency that arranges it like there used to be. The costs got higher and it is more complicated to go now. What would you like to tell our students? Oh! I’ve been thinking a lot about this through this year.... Somehow, I feel that we must do something to find more joy. More enthusiasm and passion and smile here and be happy in our own way. Without those we can’t truly do anything. We can start things and stop things, but without those we can never be really ready.
What do you do when not at work? I love swimming! And watching movies and reading books. I try to go swimming two times a week. I live a bit far from the swimming pool so I have to drive there. I also live about 20km from the school so I drive here every day as well. I also really enjoy clean-
Thank You Hanni for doing this interview and thank you for being so kind and helpful to our students. 9

Hey! A movie not based on a “True Story”.What a relief! Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) is adjusting to life in the 21st century. He is working for S.H.I.E.L.D. and is trying to catch up with what he has missed out on in his time as a “Capsicle”. He is not working alone though. By his side we have Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) who makes you kinda feel a lot more sorry for the bad guys in this movie than Cap does. A new character gets introduced: Falcon aka. Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) - Caps new sidekick - kinda-sorta. Than there is Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Agent Hill (Cobie Smulders) who seem to have their own agenda in the events to follow.

However, the movie is not just about kicking baddies off ships (flying or water-bound), there actually is quite a bit of story development going on making you question certain characters allegiance and major character death ensues. Then again, this is the Marvel-universe and you can all but wonder: Are you dead or are you just Supernatural-dead? Also Robert Redford is still making movies?

One a more serious note though, not just visually is Captain America: The Winter Soldier a big step up from the first movie. The story and pace at which it is progressing is much more appealing than its predecessor. New characters (Falcon and Agent 13) are introduced and while the thread is more or less the same as it was in The First Avenger the way it is told opens up so many possibilities for the 2nd Avenger movie and also hopefully more to come Captain America movies.
