Hello everyone! This week Insider brings you sport, music and technology. Ever wanted to transfer your photos from your camera on your laptop or computer as soon as you took them? Read on and we just may have a solution for you! Insider was also in Photo and Camera fair 2014 in Helsinki to discover what else is new in the industry. We also have an insight from a Finnish band Happoradio concert in House of Rock.
surprise there) and means two tests or two contests.* So, the word gives nothing away of the sport itself. I’m often fascinated by words and where they come from. Languages in general are amazing. Think about all the friends you have, that don’t speak the same language as you. If you start comparing your languages, I think you’ll find some phrases pretty similar. I know that Fly Agaric is translated pretty much the same in various languages, combining the words fly and mushroom.
Our main article this week is about biathlon, a winter sport that combines skiing and rifle shooting. I don’t know much about the sport but my journalist colleague surely does. I think it’s refreshing, after all the parties we’ve had this year, to have our main topic about something a bit healthier this time. Don’t you?
Now, think about Willows Catkins in your language. I’m quite sure that many of you find the word “cat” from the body of that word. And if you don’t, what meaning does your language give to those white, silky fuzz balls?
I started wondering about the word biathlon. Every time I hear it I have to ask: What is that?” Maybe because in Finnish, the name is so different, ampumahiihto. Ampuma comes from the word ampua, meaning to shoot and hiihto means skiing. Biathlon is of Greek origin (no

MUSIC:CONCERT REVIEW
HAPPORADIO IN HOUSE OF ROCK
Text & Photos: Polina Racheeva
Insider bets that almost any of you likes to go to concerts. And definitely, everyone has their own favourite band. But how about enlarging your outlook and listening to the ones popular in the country you reside? Or, especially, is they sing in local language. Happoradio performed in House of Rock on Friday, 7th of March. Insider is ready to give the view from the eyes of international student.
For newcomers, Insider would briefly introduce Happoradio. The exact meaning of the band name is “the acid radio”. The band was founded in 2001 in Helsinki. The genre is “Finnish Rock”, which means that they sing in the Finnish specific manner, and, definitely, in Finnish. Current band members are Aki Tykki (vocals, guitar, keyboards), AH Haapasalo (guitar, back-vocal), Jatu Motti (bass guitar) and Markku DeFrost (drums). Their best known singles are “Ahmat tulevat “ (“Wolverines are coming”)and “Pelastaja”(“The Saviour”). Friday night surprised with large number of people at eleven o’clock in the evening. Many people were trying to get closer to
the stage as well as to the bar. However, there was no rock-concert-like rush. In contrast, people were having a peaceful chat with each other with glasses of beer or gin, waiting for the show. Notably, there were not many teenagers or youngsters. The most common age of the audience was between 30 and 40 years old. The dressing manner was also a bit uncommon of rock concert: everyone was dressed in classical style, some were even dressed up. However, the rock concert atmosphere anyway started floating in the air. The stage covered with a curtain. The light changed colours from indigo to yellow and the guitar solo finally burst. The
5
audience started singing out old and new good songs. Artists themselves managed to give the energy impulse to the audience. At the same time they kept pretty much controlled which created some peaceful atmosphere. Except for enjoyment for ears, it was pleasing for an eye to look at the light effects on the wall and seeing the performers in different light. In the end, the audience could buy a T-shirt, a hat or any Happoradio related item. The visit of the concert gave more outlooks about what are the musical preferences of Finnish people. Who knows, maybe listening to Finnish music will be your way of learning the language.

World Cup Stage of the Biathlon 2014 in Kontiolahti (Joensuu)
Text:Victoria Zhorina, Photos:Lubov Kalimulina&Yury Ershov This year Kontiolahti held the big and international sport event as World Cup Stage of the Biathlon. All athletes from all over the world came to participate and competed for the medals. This year was a special one because next year there will be held the IBU World Championships Biathlon on 4 to 15 March 2015 and it is going to be a major event that everyone should experience live on the spot. Eight extremely exciting days of competition, as well as the side events, will create a unique tournament atmosphere in Kontiolahti and Joensuu. Kontiolahti Biathlon Stadium is located in the southern part of a former military garrison area. The ownership of the area will now move to the municipality of Kontiolahti, which offers new possibilities regarding the development of both the biathlon stadium and the whole area. The development of the area has already started. An inquest is taking place, in which the functionality and profitability of the planned tourism centre (including a hotel, spa, holiday residences and other services) is evaluated. The functional part of area planning is set to start soon.
Talking about this year, the event had been planned bad: no TV screens on the tracks, fan zones were dirty, entertainment program was good but in the wrong time of the day and furthermore is a bad weather: strong wind didn’t give any opportunity to stand outside too long. But there is no doubt that organization office will notice these problems and resolve them. However, the best Finnish biathlete Kaisa Mäkäräinen delighted the home crowd: she won 3 races in a row first time in her career even! She won two consecutive races for the first time in Östersund in the season 2010-2011.The pleasant addition was the third place in the first competition day of another Finnish biathlete Mari Laukkanen. It was unusual but very happy achievement. Interesteing coincidence happened in the male competitions as well. Johannes Thingnes Boe from Norway became 3 time winner of E.ON IBU World Cup Biathlon in Kontiolahti. The goal of Johannes before was to reach the top ten in overall World Cup standings, but now his position got so much better and he is already in TOP5 Best Biathletes in the world. About Finnish male athletes, this
6
stage was unsuccessful for them – the leading members because of the problems with health showed bad results at the first day and for the following two races even refused participating. Talking with Jarkko Kauppinen, he confessed that Finnish biathlon needs more financial investments and fan’s support. People expect good results from the team but at the same time don’t really follow the news and results. Lack of the interest from Finnish people also has an impact on motivation. However, sportsmen hope that after next year, biathlon will be getting more popular in Finland. On the last day of competition, with Finnish biathlete Ahti Toivanen, we organized an after party for all athletes and teams’ members. It was a big event for everyone, because it is almost the end of the season and this party was the first for them after the hard preparation for Olympic Games. We invited a DJ, every biathlete got free drinks and of course it was dancing time from 22.00 till the end. This weekend the final stage is going in Oslo and afterwards sportsmen will have one month of rest. Everyone is waiting for the next year and we hope that our team will show a great result.

Wifi for your camera?
WI NOT? Text & Photo: Hugh Clack
These days, camera manufacturers have cottoned on to the importance people place on being able to transfer their images to a mobile device or even directly to the internet without the need for any cables. Well this is now possible for many new cameras coming onto the market. Some manufacturers such as Canon and Nikon have actually offered Wi-Fi adapters for some time, but at quite an extra expense and mainly aimed at the more pro-level cameras. Nowadays you can also buy Wi-Fi SD cards, but there are also some devices that include some added benefits such as actually being able to use your mobile device – phone or tablet – to control the camera, thereby turning the mobile device into a large, portable, wireless viewfinder, with all of the camera controls at the touch of the screen. These kinds of devices also allow for you to upload images directly to the internet for sharing on social media directly from your camera if there is Wi-Fi internet access available. Being such an active photographer, and always on the lookout for new gadgets, I recently had the chance to test out a few such wireless units. So if you don’t have one of the latest Wi-Fi enabled cameras, but would like the ability to wirelessly transfer images from your camera directly to your iPad for example, this is for you. The three devices I tested were: Eye-Fi 8 GB SDHC memory card by SanDisk (€60)*;Weye-Feye remote control device by XSories (€250)*; and CamRanger
Wireless DSLR controller (€300)*. The Weye-Feye and CamRanger units allow for control of your DSLR as well as image transfer but the EyeFi memory card only has the possibility for image transfer from the camera, although it does allow for direct upload to the internet as well. The Eye-Fi card has a fairly simple, although slightly time consuming, setup procedure involving placing the card into your mac/pc card reader, installing some software, making some configurations, and then syncing your mobile device to your camera. The Eye-Fi card is great for transferring images to your mobile device or even mac/pc without having to remove the card from the camera or hook up any cables. When shooting with the camera, images are transferred when your other device is turned on and connected to the mobile ‘hotspot’ created by the Eye-Fi card. In testing with both an old Canon compact camera and a Canon 5D MKIII, images transferred easily to my iPad as long as the distance from the camera was not too great. Distances mentioned by the manufacturer are up to 27m outdoors and 13m indoors, but this also depends on what is around you and if there are any other wireless signals getting in the way. I found that when shooting and pausing between shots, the connection between the card and the iPad continuously had to be reset as the connection was dropped. However, when using simply to transfer and view images at the
8
end of a shooting session, things went more smoothly, and fairly quickly. The Eye-Fi only allows the transfer of JPG images and video files, sadly no RAW support, but is very cost effective compared to other devices. The Weye-Feye remote unit is a very different device altogether. It allows for the camera to be controlled from a mobile device or laptop and have the images transferred at the same time, and the range of this unit is quoted as being up to 80m! After downloading the free app to my iPad, it was a simple matter of connecting my camera with the USB cable (I know wireless means no cables but the device is connected directly to the camera nothing else, think of it as an adapter), switching the unit on, and then using the iPad to look for the wireless hotspot generated by the Weye-Feye unit. The set-up was extremely simple, and I was using the unit to shoot remotely through my iPad within a very short time. Images were loaded onto my iPad as I was shooting, with only a slight delay. However, I did notice that the same issue arose as with the Eye-Fi card, that of sometimes experiencing a dropped connection. However, for constant shooting and reviewing this is a great device – it is rugged and can take a few knocks, and the orange and black colour scheme gives it a serious look. This leads me on to the final device in my test, CamRanger. Just the name conjures up something of a ‘hero’ image and the device doesn’t disappoint. The allwhite colour of the unit, and even the
GADGETS white packaging and white charging cable, make you immediately think that this is an ‘Apple’ unit (it’s not). However, it is sleek and smooth, and certainly screams quality and finesse. Looks aside, set-up again was quick and simple with a free app available to download from the iTunes Store. With the CamRanger, I found the connection to be extremely stable (no dropped connections in all of my testing sessions under the same conditions as the other units), transfers were fast, and the remote software was easy to use with the camera functions simple to alter during shooting. The unit has a quoted operating range of 50m, which is more than adequate for most shooting circumstances. I personal-
ly found the remote software more capable and intuitive to use than the Weye-Feye software, but then I guess it is the same difference as those who prefer the camera interface of Canon over Nikon, so not something I would hold against the Wye-Feye. In conclusion, if you want a simple way to transfer images without wires, a Wi-Fi enabled card will do it for you. However, for serious shooters that want tethered control without wires the other two units are your answer – although my personal favourite would be the CamRanger, it really is the more professional unit of the two. Now where did I put the Insider credit card… [you wish, Ed.]

PHOTO&CAMERA FAIR 2014 Text&Photos:Hugh Clack
The annual photo and camera (Kuva & Kamera) was held at the Helsinki Fair Centre 7-9th March 2014. There were all kinds of representatives of the industry present with stands dedicated to camera manufacturers, the printing of images, and specialised equipment to mention just a few. The fair was also a chance to bestow awards on industry professionals for outstanding images such as in journalism and also the Fotofinlandia competition.
able couple of hundred Euros for the basic models and in the thousands for the more professional versions, there really was something for everyone’s budget. The company behind the rugged action camera, GoPro, were taking advantage of the trend as their camera range is a favourite among these users, and therefore they were offering camera and copter packages at their stand. Another large presence at the fair was given to the printing of images, especially in large format prints. The quality of digital printing has come a long way in recent years and manufacturers were keen to show what their machines were capable of. Another aspect of the printing industry is the rise in the companies offering DIY photo-book services. Firms have realised that the days of printing postcard-sized images and sticking them into an album are growing short. Many people now prefer to have their images printed directly into a book where they can also add text and create their own designs. The photobook offerings at the fair showed that many of the companies are producing very high quality and professional results that you would be proud to display on your coffee table at home.
The main aim of such a fair is supposedly to attract professionals and show the latest offerings and trends in the photographic industry. However, it was noticeable that many of the manufacturers that were present had teamed up with Finnish retailers to set-up stands that also offered the chance to purchase the manufacturers offerings at reduced fair rates alongside what the retailers were also offering. This seemed to be very much the idea of this year’s fair, with more and more ‘retail outlets’ representing the manufacturers. One supposes that this is one way for exhibitors to reclaim the high costs of attending such a fair. The biggest trend at this year’s fair seemed to be aerial photography. There were many stands representing different combinations of aerial drones - mostly quad copters – and cameras. Some were all-inone devices with on-board cameras, and others that were made for attaching your own compact camera or even full-blown DSLRs.With prices ranging from a reason-
All in all, the fair seemed to be quite successful, was larger than previous years, and attended by a high number of visitors. If you are interested in photography and get the chance to attend next year’s event, I can thoroughly recommend it.

Based on a true story… yet again. Hollywood seems to run out of ideas to make into movies or maybe the lives’ of some people are just too darn fascinating to not make them into a motion picture. In this particular case we learn about the life and motivations of P.L. Travers, the author of the Mary Poppins books and how her life’s work was made into a Disney movie in 1960.
